Quick Review of the STM Laptop Jacket

1

STM have released a number of jackets for laptops and iPads and we take a quick look at one.

We don’t usually review items like laptop bags here at UWHS, mainly because they are quite personal things, and what one person likes, the next person hates!

Anyway, since writing my book Netbooks in Easy Steps, and included sections on protecting your netbook, I have received a number of emails asking about bags for laptops, and more recently for the iPad. Now most of the time I just carry my laptop or netbook around in a bigger bag, or rucksack, but recently I have noticed scratches on the case caused by other items in the bag, so it was time to get something to protect it in the bag.

I got hold of a 13” laptop jacket from STM as I needed something to carry a laptop around and it provides great protection for it.  It is very light weight and easy to carry, either on its own, or in a bigger bag and even comes with a carry strap as well, although for the most part I just use mine in a bag.

All in all, well worth the money to protect my kit!.

Here is how STM describe the bags:

HOSS2

You can check out the HOSS website here, but it is currently only in Italian.

Here is the full press release in English (we had the Italian press release early this afternoon, but my Italian is non existent), so thank you to Gian for the translation:

Sciolze- Italy, September 13, 2010:21Style presents its new product lineHOSS ™, Home Office Storage Server, a new generation of products dedicated to storage and specific for home, small offices and professionals. Available from October 2010, the HOSS Mini Server allow to store and share any kind of digital content (documents, photos, videos, etc.) easily and safely, at a cost among the lowest in the market. The HOSS Mini Server, configurable on-demand, based on the needs of each user, can be purchased at http://www.hoss.it.

Hoss is the response to a growing issue, both at home or at office: to manage safely the a lot of digital contents which are produced every day,” explains Gian Luca Farina Perseu, 21Style CEO. “HOSS Mini Server, we can store a whole collection of digital photos and videos, office documents, CAD drawings, etc., being sure that these files are always monitored and duplicated on two drives of our server. In this way our customers are not obliged to copy their precious data on pen drives, external hard drives or other media. So they can forget to do it and also they are advantaged in finding them when needed.

HOSS Mini Servers fill the space normally reserved to 3 books (19x26x24 cm), so you can locate them anywhere in your home or office. Furthermore, the compact size and modern style make them real furnishings.

HOSS product line is based on Microsoft Windows Server ™ Home. About the main features:

  • Safe Data: photos, videos, documents are always safe thanks to the automatic duplication functions (redundancy) of data on two drives without using of RAID.There are some featurs for backup the server data on external drives. HOSS is the only server on the market sold with a minimum of two drives for maximum reliability and certainty of data security.
  • Extension of flexible support capabilities: you can easily extend the disk space on an HOSS Mini Server by inserting a new hard disk in the system even of size, vendor and type different fron those already present. This capability simplifies configuration and does not generate confusion in unexperienced users.
  • File sharing: the HOSS Mini Server shared folders, act as central repository for documents, videos and photos. Every home or office PC or external users can access these folders to add, copy or modify files with the assigned privileges (reading, writing, editing, etc.).
  • Automatic backup and easy restoration of PC: you can schedule automatic backup of PCs in the home or office (up to 10) every night, with the possibility of opening and navigating through daily backup, recovering a single file, folders, or an entire PC.Then you can reinstall all files, drivers and user data, thanks to image-based backup feature.
  • Media Server: thanks to the internal streaming engine, HOSS Mini Server may stream multimedia content to DLNA compatible devices (Sony PS3, Microsoft Xbox360, TV and many other compatible media players). HOSS H4100 model can convert audio and video in real-time, for maximum compatibility with today and tomorrow media players.
  • Low power consumption: based on Intel Atom dual core or the more powerful Intel Core i3 or AMD Athlon, HOSS starts from 28W consumption. With self-suspend and self-restart function, in standby mode it consumes about 2-3W.

Farina Perseu says: “HOSS rides the wave of Mini and Micro Server before any other competitor. HOSS is the result of over a year of design and prototyping, to simplify the difficulties using NAS based on proprietary OSs and complex RAID configurations. We are proud to be first and only that offer a Mini/Micro Server product line which can be completely configured and purchased online.

The mini server HOSS comes in three different models:

  • HOSS H4100i and H4100a: with Intel i3 or AMD Athlon X2 and up to 4 drives 3.5”.The best solution for home and office, with power for decoding, in real time, FullHD movies and streaming them through DLNA protocol. But also great to handle business services and act as hosts for virtual machines.
  • HOSS P4100: Intel Atom dual core and up to 4 drives 3.5”. The perfect solution for home or office, mainly for those who need only storage functions.
  • HOSS P6100: Intel Atom dual core and 2 drives 3.5” and 4 drivers 2.5” HotSwap. For those who need maximum security in data redundancy, thanks to removable hard disks and the ability to bring backups home”

It is certainly good to see more Windows Home Servers appearing on the market. More news when we get it.

My Movies for the iPad

Brian Binnerup has today announced My Movies for the iPad – and I for one can’t wait!

My Movies iPad

Here is what Brian has to say:

My Movies for iPad – Sneak Peak

Introduction

The release of My Movies for iPhone Pro and the latest update to My Movies for iPhone Light have left users of the iPad behind as the iPad currently only runs OS 3.2, where we are now using functionalities on iPhone that requires iOS4.

There have been lots of questions on what plans we had with the iPad. The answer to the most important one is that yes, we are planning a release for iPad, named My Movies for iPad. This page will try to answer some of the questions for this application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: When will it be available?

Answer: We are planning a release in October this year.

Question: What will it cost?

Answer: The price of the application will be $6.99 (€5.99, £4.99).

Question: Can I share the collection between my iPhone and iPad?

Answer: The iPad application is as the iPhone applications connected to our online servers, where the collection is tied to your user account, which means that you have the same collection on all devices, including the Collection Management software.

Question: The iPad does not have a camera, how can I quickly add titles?

Answer: You can synchronize your collection with our Collection Management software, you can add titles from your iPhone and synchronize the iPad, or you can add titles by manually inputting barcodes or search for titles. You can even use the batch barcode scanner in My Movies for iPhone Pro to add titles and then sync your iPad against the same collection.

Question: Will there be a free Light version?

Answer: There will not, no. The My Movies for iPad application will be available in only in a Pro version.

Question: What feature set will it have?

Answer: The feature set will be identical to the one on My Movies for iPhone Pro, except for the barcode scanning functions which requires a camera. We are though considering to exclude the “Releases” and “Trailers” section from the initial release to be able to bring you the application faster, but if we do, it will be added in an update soon after the initial release.

Question: Can I play the movie titles I have on my Media Center or Home Server on the iPad?

Answer: You can not, no. The software is a collection browsing software.

Question: Can I select to play a title on my Media Center on the iPad?

Answer: This functionality is planned for both the iPhone and the iPad applications. If it is not included with the initial release, it will be soon after.

Question: Can I use My Movies for iPad as a remote control for my Media Center?

Answer: Not in the initial release, no. It is planned to add basic remote control functionality to the iPhone and iPad releases later on for users who have My Movies for Windows Media Center installed, which means the same functionality you have on a Windows Media Center remote control will be available on the mobile devices within the local network. It is not planned to extend this further to browsing of music or similar.

So if you are a fan on My Movies on Windows Media Center and you have an iPad, then you will definitely want to check this out later in the year.

More news when we get it and keep an eye on his website.

diagram_twonkymediamanager

Here is what Twonky says about this beta release:

TwonkyManager 2.0.3 Beta 1 – Release Notes
This is our first Beta release of TwonkyManager 2.0.3. Please report any issues you find to tmm-beta@pv.com. You can download it here: http://www.twonky.com/upfiles/betas/Two … rSetup.exe
Changes
– Includes TwonkyServer 6.0.2, which has numerous bug fixes. (See below)
– Fixed a problem where some YouTube videos couldn’t be played on the TwonkyManager player.
– Improved performance when pushing video from YouTube to Samsung TVs or other TwonkyManager players on the network. Not all YouTube videos play on Samsung TVs, but it works much better than before.
– TwonkyManager now remembers which server it was attached to after shutdown and relaunch – even when a server is not running on the local PC.
– Now M4A files can be pushed to the WD TV Live box
– Now photo thumbnails appear on the WD TV Live box when pulling a folder of photos
– Fixed a problem that caused photo thumbnails to no longer appear on Samsung TVs when pulling a folder of photos
– The clear queue setting is now checked by default. This means every time you drag and drop a media item on a renderer’s icon it will play. If you uncheck this, the first media item will start playing and then other media dragged onto the currently playing device will be added to it’s queue.
– Now automatically assigns the correct icon when a “WD TV Live” is present on the network.
– Fixed a problem where one TwonkyManager could not control the volume of another TwonkyManager running on the network.
– Fixed a problem that caused the Twonkymediawatchdog.exe to crash or fail to restart after a crash when TwonkyServer was installed as a non-system service
– Reindexed the Shoutcast feeds to eliminate stations which are no longer available. This doesn’t guarantee station availability, but improves the chances of getting stations that play some of the time.
– Fixed a problem that caused the first item in all Handpicked video categories to appear as a folder icon.
– Fixed a problem that prevented personal photos from appearing in the Picasa Web media feed when the MIME-type was not lower case.
– Fixed a problem where changing the name of the local TwonkyManager player didn’t appear to other TwonkyManager users on the network.
– Add support for an expanded deviceinfo.xml file. More about this later.
– Added 40 new video feeds to the Handpicked Video list (not available in the Beta build. Will be in the final release)
– Fixed a problem where renaming a server with aggregation enabled sometimes caused problems
– Fixed a problem with the Compilation Directory setting only working the first time it was set.
– Dashes are now automatically added when you type in a license key manually. However, it’s still a good idea to paste the key in to prevent mistyping a number.
– Fixed a typo in the German language Server Settings tab (not available in the Beta build. Will be in the final release)
TwonkyServer 6.0.2 improvements
– File scanning of large libraries is now much faster than before. Over 20x faster than some previous releases.
– YouTube username and tags are now persisted
– Fixed some issues with thumbnails on Samsung TVs
– Handpicked video stations are now saved
– Add additional MP4 transcoding options to allow better options for on-the-fly video transcoding
– Fixed one problem when scanning large content libraries
– Fixed display of BMP, GIF and TIFF on PlayStation3
Known Issues
– The first time you launch TwonkyManager, it has to scan all of your media and import all of your playlists. This can take several minutes. During this process, TwonkyManager may appear a little sluggish and you may not see all of your media until the scan is complete.
– If you want to make playlists containing media from an external server that has Content Aggregation enabled, you’ll need to turn on mirroring.
– The Handpicked Radio feed is currently missing this Beta. It will be put back in the final release.
– We are seeing some performance issues with TwonkyServer with media libraries that have over 70,000 items. We are working on a solution for this.
– Rick

So why not download it and give it a go – just remember to give feedback to Twonky.

You can download it from here.

Windows Home Server V1 and Pinpoint

Microsoft have announced that their Pinpoint applications guide will have a new category for Windows Home Server V1 so if you are a developer of V1 add-ins you will want to sign up.

MS Pinpoint

Here is what Microsoft says:

To our valued Windows Home Server V1 add-in developers:

Thank you for your continued support for Windows Home Server, we appreciate all you’ve done and want to make you aware of a new opportunity to list your existing Windows Home Server (WHS) V1 add-in directly with Microsoft.

Beginning on September 16th, the “Pinpoint” applications guide will have a new category for WHS V1. We are moving away from our static page on Microsoft.com to content delivered via the Pinpoint database. This has several key advantages for you:

1) The Pinpoint solutions guide is self-service; you can create and change entries yourself.

2) Over time, the database content will be surfaced on our team’s website as well as other Microsoft web properties.

3) We are also planning to create similar Pinpoint database entries for the upcoming Vail and Aurora releases for you to list your updated add-ins as well.

4) We encourage you to list any other software you’ve developed for our other products in the Windows Server Product Family.

Our WHS V1 listing in the Pinpoint applications guide has a planned go live date of September 16, 2010. You will be able to create entries on beginning on that date. The location for Windows Home Server will be found within the “Windows Server Product Family” category. The URL to sign up is: http://pinpoint.microsoft.com/en-US/GetListed

In addition, please keep us updated on your progress moving your add-in to WHS V2, or “Vail” via email to: hsbsisvx@microsoft.com .

Finally, in case you still need to sign up for the Vail and Aurora public betas, the URLs for their Microsoft Connect sites are listed below:

Thank you,

The Home and Small Business Server Product Development and Marketing team

Boxee Box Now Available to Pre-order

1

Boxee have today announced that the long awaited Boxee Box by D-Link is available for pre-order from Amazon.com. Also there is news that they will be launching it in a number of other countries as well.

DSC00541

Here is the original post we did last year:

https://moviesgamesandtech.com/2009/12/08/d-link-and-boxee-join-forces-to-release-the-boxee-box/

And here is our report from CES back in January:

https://moviesgamesandtech.com/2010/01/18/more-on-the-d-link-boxee-box-at-ces/

Here is what Boxee said today:

We have a bunch of Boxee Box news today!

Pre-order now!

D-Link has signed up Amazon (US only) as exclusive pre-order partners for the Boxee Box. People who pre-order through Amazon in the US will receive their Boxee Box before it goes on sale anywhere else.

We think the Boxee Box is ideal for people who want to:

  • Play what you normally watch on your computer  (whether it is on the Internet or your home network) on their TV
  • Tailor the Internet experience to a huge flat screen
  • Do it in full HD, 1080p with 5.1 surround whenever possible
  • Share the stuff you watch with your friends and see what they are watching
  • Use a simple remote rather than a keyboard and mouse

If that is what you are looking to do on your TV then you will love the Boxee Box. It’s $199 and it’s available for pre-order now

International launch:

We have some good news for people who live in _______ (see list below)! D-Link has decided to go for an International launch rather than just release in the US.

Come this November the Boxee Box will be available in the following countries: the US, Canada, Australia and in Europe – Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.

As soon as we have news regarding other countries we will let you know.

Intel Inside:

The Boxee Box has moved to a completely new platform, and is now based on the Intel Atom Processor (the Intel CE4100 system-on-a-chip codenamed “Sodaville”).  This switch means that Boxee will be part of the Smart TV program that Intel is pushing and that will be heavily promoted this fall.

At CES we demoed a Boxee Box running on Nvidia’s Tegra 2 platform. We decided to make the switch to Intel earlier this year (which was a part of what delayed us from our earlier ‘Q2 launch date) to provide better support for high-profile h264, HD playback. There is plenty for us to do with Nvidia on the mobile front and future generations of Tegra are being designed to support a wide variety of video formats, so we are excited to be continuing our relationship in other ways.

The Boxee Box with Intel Inside supports full HD. 1080p, High Profile 4.1. And while the spec calls for 62.5Mbit/s, we have actually tested it in excess of 90Mbit/s (sorry, that’s the highest bitrate sample we could get our hands on). No sweat.

We’re at the Intel Developer Forum today showing off the new Boxee Box by D-Link so if you’re in the area, stop by and see us.

So there you have it – the Boxee Box is available for pre-order now in the US and is coming soon to a number of other places. I still cant wait to get my hands on it!

UWHS HomeServerSync Giveaway Two Results

Earlier in the week we launched the second of a number of giveways for our readers to win a TWO year subscription to the HomeServerSync for Windows Home Server add-in from Tranquil PC. We have two subscription to giveaway in this round, and here are the winners plus an extra licence.

LOGO500

Over the course of the next few weeks, we will be giving away a total of 10 two year subscriptions to HomeServerSync, each worth a whopping £278 each, which means we are giving away £2780 just for you, our UWHS readers, thanks to our friends at Tranquil PC.

If you are not sure what HomeServerSync is, you should check out our review – part one and part two.

HomeServerSync has ten top features, and here are the next two:

3.  Offsite Bulk Download

So you have 10s, 100s or even 1000?s GB of data safely backed up, and some disaster strikes your Home Server (perhaps theft).  You can use the web service, or a new Home Server to get your files – but if you want all of the files and can’t wait for them all to come down the internet pipe, then you can request a Bulk Download.  Selected folders or your whole backup (still encrypted) is put onto a USB HDD and is sent back to you.

4.  Synchronise your Home Server and PCs

This innovative service provides a much needed facility to make your PCs truly mobile.  Simply install the HomeServerSync desktop application onto your PC and after a few security steps, including entry of your Pre-Shared Key (PSK), you are ready to go.

The system works very simply – just select which folders on your PC should sync to which folders on your Home Server.  Whether you are locally or remotely connected makes no difference, except for transfer speeds.

Home Server folder security is managed by the Home Server console as it is already.
So you can control which users can read or write to specific folders, or none at all.

The HomeServerSync manager provides numerous controls to protect your files
– Sync direction (to Server only, from Server only or both directions)
– Versioning control
– File Deletion control
– Real time or scheduled sync

Of course more than one user can update a Server Shared Folder. If used properly the HomeServerSync system means that multiple users can sync desktop PC folders with each other – with the data being stored on the Home Server too.  This is ideal for remote family members or mobile workers.

So we asked you to give us some topic suggestions for the Windows Home Server Code Name Vail book I am currently writing, and we had a lot of very good ideas! I’m not going to tell MS Press about all of them otherwise they will want them all included in the book, and in the current writing timescales!

So, this giveaways three lucky winners, yes three as we had so many great suggestion are:

Ron D

Kory Klimoski

Malte Göller

Well done guys, I will be in touch momentarily to tell you how to get your 2 years subscriptions.

To those that didn’t win, don’t worry, we still have another FIVE 2 year subscriptions to give away over the next few weeks, and we will even include all those who entered this giveaway automatically for one of the other giveaways.

Stay tuned to UWHS for your chance to win.

Not gonna say much on this one. The new name makes it easy to change my prior build to “HDHomeRun Prime”. Good showing SD! Now, when can I get one?

SiliconDust USA, Inc. and Hauppauge Computer Works, Inc. announce alliance for PC based CableCARD™ conditional access digital TV tuners

Hauppauge to introduce an affordable USB attached, premium cable TV tuner for PCs and notebooks through its U.S. retail sales channel

Livermore, CA & Hauppauge, NY – Sept. 10, 2010 – SiliconDust USA, Inc., based in Livermore, CA, today announced an alliance with Hauppauge Computer Works, Inc. to introduce a USB-connected Digital TV Tuner product for use with CableCARD™ conditional access. This product leverages SiliconDust’s design and technology to offer a new addition to Hauppauge’s line of TV tuner products.

This introduction adds native support for premium cable TV to the Hauppauge line of WinTV® tuners. The new TV tuner is USB connected and will work with notebook and netbook computers, in addition to standard desktop PCs.

Concurrently SiliconDust will be introducing HDHomeRun® PRIME™ an Ethernet attached TV tuner product with CableCARD conditional access. HDHomeRun PRIME enables premium cable TV to be accessed across the network from any computer in the home.

The Hauppauge USB and SiliconDust Ethernet attached products introduce affordable solutions in the cable TV tuner market for PCs. Both devices support M-Card™ conditional access and conform to the OpenCable™, OCUR and DRI specifications. Both devices support Switched Digital Video (SDV) in conjunction with a cable-provider-supplied tuning adapter / resolver. The products are designed for use with PCs running Microsoft® Windows® 7 and Windows Media Center.

The Hauppauge USB and SiliconDust HDHomeRun PRIME products will support high-definition and other digital cable TV, including premium cable channels, direct to the computer.

SiliconDust’s HDHomeRun PRIME product builds on the success of their original HDHomeRun® Network Attached ATSC / QAM Dual Tuner which enables customers to stream digital broadcast video across the home network, without being tethered to one computer in one location in the home.

“SiliconDust is enthusiastic about this alliance with Hauppauge, a leading name in the computer tuner market for many years.” said Theodore Head, President and Chief Executive Officer of SiliconDust USA, Inc. “This allows retail options for both consumers and retailers alike, creating greater awareness of the market and expanding the number of choices available to fit differing needs.”

“SiliconDust’s experience with digital cable access systems combined with Hauppauge’s strong computer TV tuner sales will produce a successful launch of this innovative product.” said Ken Plotkin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hauppauge Computer Works, Inc. said, “Moving forward, we believe affordable CableCARD conditional access TV products will increase the use of Windows Media Center as a full functional digital video recorder for the home.”

This rocks. Seriously.

Using Windows Home Server and HomeServerSync Giveaway Number Two Still Time To Enter

We have teamed up with our friends at Tranquil PC to give away some two year subscriptions to their HomeServerSync add-in for Windows Home Server. This is the second of a number of giveaways and you still have until tomorrow to enter.

LOGO500

The first giveaway was a huge success and so it is time for number two.

Over the course of the next few weeks, we will be giving away a total of 10 two year subscriptions to HomeServerSync, each worth a whopping £278 each, which means we are giving away £2780 just for you, our UWHS readers.

If you are not sure what HomeServerSync is, you should check out our review – part one and part two.

HomeServerSync has ten top features, and here are the next two:

3.  Offsite Bulk Download

So you have 10s, 100s or even 1000’s GB of data safely backed up, and some disaster strikes your Home Server (perhaps theft).

Ok, you are probably asking yourselves, what do I have to do to win one of these fantastic prizes?

For giveaway number two, we are giving away another TWO licences (one per person), and all you have to do is send us an email giving us a suggestion for the site, whether it is an article, a change to the look of the site, the logo, anything – the choice again is yours.

So send your email to giveaways @ usingwhs.com (remembering to remove the spaces).

Giveaway number two will end on Sunday 12th September 2010 when we will reveal the next two winners, who will be drawn at random by my cats (those of you who know me will get that little in-joke!) and posted on the site sometime on Sunday. The competition is open to anyone, anywhere, and you can enter as many times as you like, as long as your entry is different each time!

Good luck and keep watching UWHS for more giveaways and surprises.

And a very big thank you to Tranquil PC for the licences!

And for those who entered giveaway number one but didn’t win, I will be randomly entering you in the next few giveaways so you may just win!
