Updating the Aleratec 1:1 HDD Cruiser with Updated Secure Erasure Functionality : Video Edition

Back in May 2010, we did a hands-on review of the Aleratec 1:1 HDD Cruiser which enabled you to duplicate a hard drive or securely erase one without the need for a computer. There is an updated firmware available that delivers additional secure erasure functionality.

What is the Aleratec 1:1 HDD Cruiser?

According to Aleratec:

The Aleratec 1:1 HDD Cruiser duplicates hard disk drives without a computer: an essential tool for installing new or upgrading multiple computer systems. It can also decommission computer systems by reliably wiping all the data from up to 2 hard drives at a time with Secure Erase, a powerful and efficient NIST 800-88 accepted form of sanitization that is up to 90% faster than traditional overwrite methods. As a backup, the unit continues to offer a choice of three comprehensive overwrite algorithms: a one-pass wipe, a three-pass wipe with verify, or a powerful seven-pass wipe as recommended by the Department of Defense 5220.22-M specification. Proper hard disk drive sanitization eliminates the risk of sensitive data falling into the wrong hands and is an essential part of compliance for FACTA, GLB, HIPAA, Sarbanes-Oxley and other federal and state regulations.
The 1:1 HDD Cruiser’s drive bays are equipped with quick and easy loading doors. Simply open the drive bay door to load or unload a drive. Slide the drive in the drive bay and close the drive bay door and high integrity electrical and data connections are made automatically. Each drive bay has Non Scratch SATA connectors designed for greater than 50,000 swap cycles to prevent any damage to your hard disk drives. The unit is compatible with 3.5” internal SATA I/II hard disk drives and can accommodate 2.5” internal SATA I/II hard disk drives with optional adapters (P/N 350106), sold separately.

As an added bonus, the 1:1 HDD Cruiser has a USB 2.0 port so any hard drives loaded in the machine can be accessed by a PC.

My HDD Cruiser was still running the A.26H firmware so it was time to upgrade to the A.28H firmware in order to take advantage of the updated Secure Erasure functionality.

Preparing the Firmware Update

In order to update the firmware, you need to use a hard drive and the updated firmware. You need to create an 8MB FAT partition on the drive.

01-02-2011 14-24-4501-02-2011 14-25-0701-02-2011 14-25-1601-02-2011 14-25-2401-02-2011 14-26-28

Once you have done that, just copy the firmware file to the drive and then remove the drive from your computer.

01-02-2011 14-26-55

Insert the HDD into the source bay.

Press and hold the ESC key for 3 seconds until you see Adv.Setup.

If the screen just reads Adv.Setup, then press ENT, otherwise skip to the next step.

Use the arrow keys to scroll through the Adv.Setup menu to the Update Firmware option.

Press the ENT key, then press a second time to confirm the update.

Once the update is complete, restart the duplicator. (Note: Do not power down the duplicator during the update process.)

To verify the firmware has been updated, do the following:

Scroll to the Setup option and press ENT.

Scroll to the System Info option and press ENT.

Verify the updated firmware version.

Power down the duplicator and remove the source HDD.

And that is it – so would you like to see that in action?

The Video Walkthrough of Updating the Firmware

Here is a video walkthrough of the firmware updating process to show you just how simple it is.

Updating the Firmware on the Aleratec 1:1 HDD Cruiser

The whole process only takes a few moments.

Performing a Secure Erasure

Ok, so now the firmware is updated, why not perform a secure erasure? I figured I would just use the hard drive I had used for the firmware update as it was already in the drive bay.

The drive is a 200GB drive, in case you were wondering.

The video isn’t very exciting, but I wanted to show that a 200GB drive can be securely erased in a little over an hour.

We will work actively to maintain sales territories and profitable business for our partners.

The way to reach our goals

In the competitive market of today, it’s not enough to just provide excellent products. Regular and well planned marketing activities in close cooperation with the channel and the available media, are keypoints to succeed. We are well experienced in marketing brands in the IT business, and we will use this to create efficient marketing tools – to gain a bigger market share and good earning possibilities for our channel.

Dropbox: A Great Way to Share Files

2

Are you looking for an easy yet effective way to synch files between computers and to provide access to them online?  Dropbox may be the answer!

What is Dropbox

Here is how Dropbox explains their software:

Dropbox is software that syncs your files online and across your computers

Put your files into your Dropbox folder on one computer, and they’ll automatically appear on any of your other computers that also have Dropbox installed (Windows, Mac, and Linux too!). You can even download Dropbox apps for your smartphone or mobile device (iPhone, iPad, Android, and Blackberry). Everything in your Dropbox is available from the Dropbox website, too.

When you install Dropbox on your PC, it creates a folder on your hard drive.  If you want content synched to other devices, copy it into that folder.  Dropbox copies your content to secured servers and then propagates the file to any other device running Dropbox.

Sharing Files

Dropbox gives you two options: sharing with anyone, and sharing only with those to whom you grant access.  In order to share publically, log onto the Dropbox website and sign into your account.  Click on Files and choose Public, then click on Upload.  Once your file is on the server, right click on it, select Copy Public Link, then Copy to Clipboard.  Email that out and you are all set!  Anyone with that link can get at your file.  If you prefer to use Twitter to send the link, you have the option to use a shortened link.  Easy as pie!

In order to securely share, first create a folder for shared content.  From your Dropbox account dashboard online, select Files and then Share a Folder.  Select I’d like to create and share a folder, name it and click Next.  On the next screen, enter in the email addresses for those that you want to share the folder’s content with.  There is an option to let you personalize the message, always a good idea!  Dropbox generates an invite email to your addressees, and once they install Dropbox and action the email, the contents of your shared folder synchs to the Dropbox servers and also to the devices that your sharing partners are using.  As you make changes, the revised files are synchronized between the sharing devices and the Dropbox servers.  Very handy for collaborating!

Supported Devices

Dropbox works on Windows, Mac, and Linux computers.  It also works on iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad, Blackberries, and Android devices like my Droid 2!  Talk about convenient access to synched data!

Pricing

Basic accounts, which allow for 2GB of data, are free.  You can earn more free space by watching some training videos and inviting more people to join the program…I currently have 2.5GB available for free.  If you need to synch more data, a 50GB plan for $9.99/month or $99/year is available, and you can also get a 100gb plan for $19.99/month or $199/year.

Dropbox does a great job of enabling easy file synch and sharing.  Give it a try!

Windows Home Server 2011 Feature : Server and Folder Recovery

Now that the Windows Home Server 2011 Release Candidate is available, lets take a look at the new Server and Folder recovery feature. There’s even a video at the end showing it working.

WHS 2011 Logo

In a previous article, we looked at the new Server and Folder backup functionality provided in Windows Home Server 2011, so what happens if you need to recover something?

Using Server and Folder Recovery

Ok, so you have backed up your server and folders but you need to recover something. Go to the Computers and Backup tab and click on Restore files or folders for the server from the SERVER tasks list. This starts the recovery wizard so just click Next.

Windows 7-2011-02-02-18-22-51

You need to specify the backup location (note that “At a different location” doesn’t mean offsite). Then click Next.

Windows 7-2011-02-02-18-22-58

Select both the backup disk to restore from and the server to restore to.

Windows 7-2011-02-02-18-23-10

Then choose if you want to start the restore from the latest backup or from a backup that you select yourself. Most of the time I would guess you will select the most recent backup.

Windows 7-2011-02-02-18-23-21

If you do want to choose the backup yourself you just need to click on date of the backup (the available dates will be in bold) and the time from the drop down list.

Windows 7-2011-02-02-18-23-33

Windows Home Server 2011 Feature : Server and Folder Backup

Now that the Windows Home Server 2011 Release Candidate is available, lets take a look at the new Server and Folder backup feature. There’s even a video at the end showing it working.

WHS 2011 Logo

One of the most obvious missing features from Windows Home Server V1 was the ability to backup your WHS System drive and your backup database. There was the great add-in, BDBB that enabled you to backup your backup database but that still left the System drive at risk. And frankly that all should have been “out of the box” functionality!

With Windows Home Server 2011, both missing features are there, and they are very simple to you.

Now that Drive Extender has been removed, Microsoft recommend that you backup your WHS at regular intervals in case of drive failure, corruption, or whatever. In fact, the default setting for backing up your server is twice a day, but that can be changed to suit your needs, and we shall cover that in a moment.

Using Server and Folder Backup

Server and Folder backups require the use of an external hard drive. After all, the whole point of this exercise is to have a backup and if you kept it with the WHS and there was a fire or flood for example, the backup would also be lost. So using an external drive makes it easier to store it offsite.

Make sure you have connected your external backup drive and click on the Hard Drive tab within Server Folders and Hard Drives. Click on the Add the hard drive to Server Backup task from the BACKUP Tasks list.

Windows 7-2011-02-02-18-11-37

This starts the wizard – so just click Next.

Windows 7-2011-02-02-18-11-44

You then need to select the backup drive, in my case I only have one drive connected, but if your drive isn’t shown click the Refresh list button and check the connections as well. Once you have selected your drive, click Next.

Windows 7-2011-02-02-18-11-51

You are then warned that the drive will be formatted and any data on the drive will be lost (this only happens the first time you add a backup drive, so don’t worry). Click Yes to continue (once you have copied off any data you want to keep that may have been on the drive).

Windows 7-2011-02-02-18-11-59

You are asked to label the drive – so put something useful in here, such as Server Backups and click Next.

Windows 7-2011-02-02-18-12-04

Windows Home Server 2011 Feature : Move Folder Wizard

Now that the Windows Home Server 2011 Release Candidate is available, lets take a look at the new Move Folder Wizard feature. There’s even a video at the end showing it working.

WHS 2011 Logo

Here is how Microsoft describe the Move Folder Wizard functionality:

[box style=”rounded” border=”full”]A new Move a Folder wizard enables you to move server folders from one hard drive to another to support scenarios in which the free space on the hard drive becomes too small for storage.[/box]

So this is there to help you move a folder from one drive, which may be getting full, to another drive, that isn’t as full. Whilst the wizard does all this for you once you select the folder to move and where to move it, it would have been a lot better to have the functionality automatically detect a drive was getting full and move a folder to a free drive without you having to do something yourself. So hopefully in the future this might change or someone might write an add-in to perform this as at the moment you need to be involved otherwise your drive might run out of space!

Using the Move Drive Wizard

So in order to use the Move Drive functionality, you need to have an additional drive in or attached to your Windows Home Server. Microsoft don’t recommend using external drives as they can easily become disconnected, but you can use them and I am certain that people will!

Anyway, make sure you have at least one additional drive attached (somewhere). In the example below I have connected an external drive that is appearing as F.

Windows 7-2011-02-02-16-26-17

Click on the Server Folders tab, select the Folder you want to move from the list and click the Move the Folder link on the Tasks list to start the wizard. It tells you backup your server first and ensure than none of the files in the folder you want to move are in use, and also not to add anymore files to the folder whilst the move is taking place otherwise they won’t appear in the new location.

Windows 7-2011-02-02-16-28-01

You then have to choose which drive you want to move the folder to (I am surprised to see if offer you the chance to move the folder to the C drive – this is not a good move and I really don’t recommend it). So in my case, let’s choose the F drive and then click the Move Folder button.

Windows 7-2011-02-02-16-28-10

Now if you have chosen an external hard drive the wizard will now warn you against moving the folder there, but in some cases you may have no choice but to use an external drive, so if you are, just be aware of the warning and click Next.

Windows 7-2011-02-02-16-28-19

The wizard will now do it’s thing – depending on the size of the folder you are moving, this could take a while, so be patient!

Windows 7-2011-02-02-16-28-30

When the move has completed, the wizard will advise you to open the Server Backup configuration to ensure that the new location of the folder is including in the backup. You can do that or you can just click Close and check later.

Windows 7-2011-02-02-17-24-00

And that’s it. It’s pretty simple to use, as I mentioned earlier, it is just a shame that you have to select a folder yourself, although I am sure that some people will prefer this as it means they have more control over the process.

Here is a video I put together showing the WHS 2011 Move Folder Wizard in action:

Windows Home Server 2011 Release Candidate Now Available To Download

Today Microsoft finally announced the Windows Home Server Code Name Vail is to be called Windows Home Server 2011, and they have also made the Release Candidate available to download.

WHS 2011 Logo

Yes, so after months of speculation about what the final name was going to be, Microsoft have finally told everyone it is called Windows Home Server 2011. To be honest, there is no big surprise here as the other products in the “Colorado” range are all called Windows “something something” 2011 (replace something something with Small Business Server). Frankly the surprise is why Microsoft felt they had to wait a few months after announcing the final name of the other products before announcing WHS 2011.

Earlier this week Microsoft “accidently” tweeted that the RC for Vail had been signed off, then removed it, so everyone knew that it was ready and wanted to know when they could get it – well that day is FINALLY here.

So, lets get into specifics now….

This is the release candidate, so it’s pretty much feature complete – so if you are looking for a feature that you were hoping Microsoft might add at the last minute (such as Media Center) or add back (such as Drive Extender) then unfortunately you are going to be disappointed. At this point, Microsoft tend to only fix “serious” bugs prior to shipping.

Below are the changes to the release candidate from the previous public beta:

With the removal of Drive Extender storage technology, the following changes have been introduced in the server folders and server hard drives areas of server storage.

Server Folders

The following changes have been introduced to the server folders feature area:

· Server folders are now created on regular NTFS drives (volumes) as opposed to Drive Extender volumes.

· Server folders can be created on any server hard drives. Therefore, there are no limitations to the number of folders that can be created.

· Server folders can be added to existing locations on a hard drive. When adding a new server folder, you can choose to either create a new location, or choose an existing location on the hard drive for the server folder.

· Using external USB drives for storing server folders is discouraged because the server folders may become unavailable if the external drive is disconnected.

· Server folders can either be deleted (which will delete the shared folder and the data on the hard drive), or just unshared (which will preserve the data on the hard drive).

· A new Move a Folder wizard enables you to move server folders from one hard drive to another to support scenarios in which the free space on the hard drive becomes too small for storage.

· Server folders cannot be created on hard drives that are not formatted with an NTFS file system.

Server Hard Drives

The following changes have been introduced to the server hard drives feature area:

· The Hard Drives tab on the Dashboard now lists NTFS drives (volumes) instead of the hard disks (spindles) that were listed in earlier releases of the products.

· Previous Versions for Shadow Copies is now enabled at the hard-drive level as opposed to the server-folder level in earlier releases of the products.

· The server monitors for the presence of unformatted internal hard disks and provides the Format a Hard Disk wizard to help format them. It is recommended that you use external hard disks for Server Backup only.

Want To Try It Yourself?

So there you have it. I know that a lot of people are not going to be happy that Microsoft haven’t done more to replace Drive Extender, or add additional functionality.

There is some news about possible Drive Extender replacements in Microsoft’s blog post, however it is too soon to tell what they are and whether they will be accepted by the community, so watch this space!

There is no official word yet when Windows Home Server 2011 will be finalised and RTM’d but I would expect it to be fairly soon as Microsoft previously stated H1 2011!

We will be posting a series of articles on the new features of Windows Home Server 2011, so if there is anything you want covered in greater detail, just let us know!

So why not give Windows Home Server 2011 a try, it’s available now on Microsoft Connect to download.

Download Windows Home Server 2011 from Microsoft Connect

Here is what Microsoft have posted on their blog today about the release:

Today we are pleased to announce the availability of the Release Candidate for Microsoft Windows Home Server 2011 (formerly Windows Home Server Code Name “Vail”). Affordable and easy-to-use, Microsoft Windows Home Server 2011 (WHS) is the ideal solution to help families keep their important digital files and PC’s automatically backed up, organized, and accessible.

The Release Candidate (RC) signifies our last mile efforts for releasing this product to our customers, and prepares our network of software and hardware partners for its release.

This WHS RC is the first public release to include changes in the storage features, so let’s look at some of the changes you can expect. All existing technologies such as server and client backup, health monitoring, remote web access, streaming media, and simplified dashboard management are still included.

A new Move Folder Wizard makes it easy for you to move data from one drive to another. As Hard Drives are added to the Home Server, your health alerts will notify you that a new Hard Drive is available. From here, you can automatically format and configure the new drive for additional storage.

Once configured, you can easily use the Move Folder Wizard to move your data to the new drive as needed.

To see this in action, please watch our Windows Home Server Move Folder Wizard Learning Bite.

Data protection also includes daily Server and PC backup, Previous Versions via Shadow copy which lets you return prior versions of existing files (without needing to restore from backup), and a protection feature for pre-defined folders (such as Recorded TV, Videos, Photos) in case these are accidently deleted.

Thank you for helping us test this product, and please provide any feedback through WHS Connect, or our official Windows Home Server Support forums.

We talk about Microsoft’s attitude to consumers products and whether the failure of some of Microsoft’s consumer products are going to cause problems in the future or whether they are right to focus on  the revenue. We talk about Windows Home Server Vail and a potential release candidate, Blackgold  DVB-T2 tuner issues, my experiences with making a Windows Media Center Setup box install with Windows Embedded, Android Windows Media Center apps, Intel Sandybridge problems and hybrid disk drives.

Android Market now available through a web browser

3

This is a quick note more than anything to say that Google now let you access the Android Market through any web browser by going to Android Market.

Below are a couple of screen shots from the market. One of the best features is being able to pick and app and then remote install it to your device.

Is this going to end up as an AppBrain killer?

My only gripe with the market is it shows apps installed even if you’ve since uninstalled them.

And as you can see, tango video is not installed on my phone currently.

But apart from that I think that the web Android Market is a step in the right direction for Google and they might even get more sales now because of it.
