Windows Home Server Backup Database-Backup (BDBB) 1.0.2.2 Add-In Released

Alex Kuretz has been a busy boy this week! Not only has he released a new version of MSS Fan Control he has also released a new version of the must have add-in Backup Database Backup for Windows Home Server.

Windows Home Server doesn’t provide an easy way for you to backup your backup database so this add-in is very important!

Version 1.0.2.2 is primarily a maintenance release with only bug fixes and minor feature changes. Here’s what you can find in the new version.

Redesigned method of drive detection for better accuracy
Really display TrueCrypt encrypted drives (I swear this works now!)
Disable Duplication Options for server with single Storage Hard Drive
Disallow backup to non-NTFS formatted drives (needed for 4GB files)
Properly handle network shares and usernames with spaces
Do syntax checking of network path format (\\server\share)
Store Readme in Software\Add-Ins share so user can access it
Improved error messages, including start and stop times in the Event Viewer Application logs

I just received a HP Home Server a few weeks ago. By looking at the BDBB wiki, it seems that I do not need to use a WHS Server Backup drive for anything. If I have all the network shares set with file duplication, and set the BDBB to copy the backup files to one of the network shares, then all my bases are covered. Yet the wiki says that it is not recommended to save the databases to the Server Storage Pool (which I assume is network shares). What point am I missing?

  Well, thats not entirely true. You could still have a server problem that killed all your drives – say a fire or something, or the box could be stolen. If you backup to an external drive and store it offsite then you really are protected.

I have recently set up WHS and now have all my home PCs backing up regularly. All good. Also have centralized quite a bit of photos and itunes on the server as well as a bunch of software. I'm not as cocerned with the pc backups as I am the media. There is no back up for the media because it is centralized on the server. At least the PCs themselves are the primary storage location for the PC data. So the server copy isn't the last resort. Can your BDBB be configured to backup the media as well as the PC backup?

I checked the Enable Duplication of WHS Backups.

I have an issue now where suddenly the 'system' portion of server storage is taking up all the rest of my storage. Left me 1GB and now duplication is failing. All drives are full and I don't know how to fix. I already remove the check mark. Apply and ran a computer backup clean up. No change.

  My only advice would be to either delete something or to add an additional drive.
  
  You could also temporarily move data from your WHS to a computer on your network while you sort the issue and then move them back when its all fixed.

Thanks for this great app but I am stymied by 2 issues – scheduling it to run each night? and some sort of notification that the backups from the desktops were succcessful or failed and maybe a notification that bdbb was successful / failed.

any hints / advice? I've posted this on a bunch of forums and didn't get much of any helpful replies – I debated using WHS or shadow protect to back up 3 desktops. THe price was a wash, but I'm thinking I should have gone with Shadow Protect because it seems to be more 'ready to go'?
