Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 – Make Videos Like A Professional

Have you ever wanted to record your desktop screen? Interested in creating your own Windows Media Files? Want to make Silverlight video? Expression Encoder 4 from Microsoft is a free tool that will help you create video like a professional. This is long article with many pictures but I promise you it is worth the read no matter what your skill level.

Microsoft Expression Encoder 4

Andrew Edney told me about this new trial version of Microsoft Encoder 4 this weekend and I had a chance to play around with this great and powerful application. If you want to create your own video or publish your existing video in Silverlight then this application is for you!

A few key points to know before starting the download:

  • System Requirements are here
  • This is a “trial” version
  • 10 minutes video length for the free version
  • .NET Framework 4.0 required install before Encoder install
  • This free version of Expression Encoder 4 does not include support for live IIS Smooth Streaming and H.264 encoding. To use these features, upgrade to Expression Encoder Pro.

Microsoft Expression Overview

“We offer multiple versions of Expression Encoder, a free download with limited functionality and a professional version. You can download Expression Encoder at no cost here. Expression Encoder does not have support for H.264, does not support live Smooth Streaming, and has a ten-minute limit on screen capture. “

This is the overview directly from the Microsoft website:

Expression Encoder Pro is a streamlined video production tool that enables you to focus your time and energy on enhancing, encoding and delivering your on-demand or live video content at higher quality with less effort. Expression Encoder Pro was the first encoder to support Smooth Streaming, a technology that dynamically adjusts playback rates and quality, and today is the most affordable IIS Live Smooth Streaming solution on the market, delivering hardware performance for a software price.

We offer multiple versions of Expression Encoder, a free download with limited functionality and a professional version. You can download Expression Encoder at no cost here. Expression Encoder does not have support for H.264, does not support live Smooth Streaming, and has a ten-minute limit on screen capture.

Expression Encoder Pro offers more advanced functionality and support for richer playback experiences. With this version, you can publish H.264 or VC-1 content, broadcast live events with live Smooth Streaming, and capture screencasts of any length. Please see the table below for a full comparison of features.

Windows Media Encoder has been retired as of 2010, and we encourage users to transition to Expression Encoder.

You can see a comparison below with the old Windows Media Encoder. Since it is being retired we should start using the new application now.

Microsoft Expression Encoder 4

Once you have installed .NET Framework 4.0 you are ready for the download and installation.

Microsoft Expression Encoder 4

Using Microsoft Expression Encoder 4

Recording from your desktop is easy. Just start the Screen Capture application.

Microsoft Expression Encoder 4

Before you start recording you should set up your options.

Microsoft Expression Encoder 4

I prefer to show the mouse pointer during my recordings.

Microsoft Expression Encoder 4

I am also using a headset at work so I adjust the settings accordingly. The application will pick up my voice over the headset and the sounds coming from the PC. Sweet.

UWHS Needs Your Help

0

How would you like to visit events such as CES? How would you like to write for UWHS? Well now’s your chance – UWHS needs your help!

UWHS_LightBackground_800pixel_72dpi_RGB

When UWHS first started all those years ago, the site was dedicated to just Windows Home Server.

Well over the last year or so we have expanded to cover all manner of subjects, including Media Center, gadgets, things in the digital home, and even Apple products.

During 2011 the site will be expanding even more, with lots of new features (but more on that another time), and as such it is more than just Tim and myself are able to do.

So, that is where you guys come in!

How would you like to write with us? We are looking for all sorts of writers and anyone interested in tech. You can write news articles, opinion pieces, reviews of hardware and software, and so on, the possibilities are endless. It doesn’t just have to be on Windows Home Server – you can write about any subject you have an interest in. It could be Apple, Microsoft, Android, mobile devices, hardware, software, audio, video, and so on…..

You could even get to come along to events such as CES (and we have quite a few things planned around this as well).

At the moment we can’t pay you (although this may change in the future depending on what happens), but you would get access to shows and events, get to keep the odd gadget or two, get software and build up a reputation as a writer. Plus, you never know, you might even get awarded a Microsoft MVP award (this is what happened to Tim). And you would also get other free stuff too – did you see the amount of stuff I came back with from CES!

So, if you are interested, or you want to know more, drop us a line at andrew @ usingwhs.com (remembering to remove the spaces) and tell us what you are interested in and what you want to do, and how often you can do it.

Ideally we are looking for people who can write often, maybe a couple of times a week (again, the articles don’t have to be long, especially if they are news items), but anything you want to write would be great.

So, want to join the team?

How To Install XBMC Media Center on the Apple iPhone 4 or iPad

Yesterday we announced the release of XBMC for the Apple iPhone 4, iPad and AppleTV 2. Today we show you how to install XMBC to your Apple iPhone 4 or iPad.

Back in December we published our hands-on review of XBMC 10.0, and we loved it.

And now for those of us that have Apple devices, such as the iPhone, iPad or the new AppleTV, we can get XBMC as well.

One thing you need to remember is that XBMC is NOT available it the App Store which means the only way to install it only your Apple devices is to jailbreak the required device.

This process isn’t for the fainthearted, and can jeopardise your warranty, so please only do this if you are sure. UWHS cannot take responsibility if you try XBMC and you brick your device!

There are a number of different ways to jailbreak your device, we are not going to cover them here in this article – just do a search on Google!

The following screenshots were taken on an iPhone 4, this is the same process if you want to install XBMC to your Apple iPad.

When you jailbreak your device, you get a new application called Cydia. This is where we must add the source in order to download the app to the device.

Review of the Icy Dock MB982IP-1S Hard Drive Converter

Got some spare 2.5” SATA, SAS or SSD’s sitting around and want to use them in your desktop PC? You will need a hard drive convertor, so step forward another product from Icy Dock, this time the MB982IP-1S Hard Drive Converter.

IMG_3550

Here is how Icy Dock describe converter:

Icy Dock has changed the game yet again with the new MB982IP-1S 2.5” to 3.5” SATA/SAS SSD & HDD Converter. The MB982 is predicated off the incredibly popular MB882SP-1S-1B device, taking its general concept and improving it tenfold. This product is designed using the dimensions, connection locations, and mounting hole positions of a standard 3.5” drive, so that it can be used in any internal hard drive bay, as well as with backplane and hot swap modules.

The new converter utilizes a full metal design, creating a better environment for cooling, as well as giving it a rock solid construction, ideal for industrial, enterprise, and military applications. Improving upon the original, the MB982 can now handle both SAS and SATA drives, including the Western Digital VelociRaptor 10K RPM drives. To allow for 12.5mm and 15mm drive heights, we have included our SmartFit Technology, which secures the drive in its place whether it is a thin 9.5mm or thick 15mm.

The MB982 also includes most of the features that you already expect from an Icy Dock product: an effortless installation process without any tools or screws, plenty of ventilation slots to keep any drive used running cool and efficient, and a unique and stylish design. The top, front and rear allow air to flow through, and a special vent on the bottom gives the user visual confirmation that the drive has made a secure connection.

* Converts your 2.5” SATA/SAS HDD or SSD to a 3.5” SATA/SAS hard drive, for 3.5” SATA/SAS
drive bay usage.
* Full Metal and Heavy Duty with Easy Access to Drives.
* Airflow Vents For Heat Dissipation With Anti-vibration Design.
* Universal Mounting Holes For Most Common PC Cases.
* Compatible With Most 3.5” HDD Backplanes and Hot Swap Devices.
* Compatible With Mac Pro.
* Screw-less Design For Quick & Easy Installation.
* Perfect For System Integrators and IT Professionals.
* Compatible with 15mm height drives.

What’s In The Box?

IMG_3547IMG_3548IMG_3549

A Closer Look

The enclosure is very light, and very sturdy. The connectors on the back include the power and SATA connectors, an SAS connector if you want to use SAS drives and a button you press to open the lid of the enclosure (so no unscrewing required here, making it very easy to use). There are also a number of vents situated around and under the enclosure.

IMG_3551IMG_3552IMG_3553

Adding A Drive

As I said I above, to open the enclosure is just a case of pressing the button on the back – this springs open the lid.

IMG_3554

You then just pop the drive in and close the lid – the process of closing the lid actually moves the drive into place with the connectors. And removing a drive is just a case of opening the lid and then pulling on the small plastic tab to lift the drive out of the bay.

IMG_3555IMG_3556

Here is a short video showing just how easy it actually is.

Final Thoughts

So once again Icy Dock delivers exactly what it says on the tin!

There are plenty of enclosures and converters around at the moment, but this one is very good quality, extremely easy to use and looks good (which is an odd thing to say considering it will be INSIDE your computer)! The button to open the lid instead of screws is a welcome addition and makes it even easier and quicker to swap drives.

If you have spare drives or drives you want to use internally on your PC, then look no further than the MB982IP-1S.

Cost wise, it retails for under $50, but as usual, look around as a few moments of searching came up with places selling it for less than $25!

And check out the UWHS Store for this, and other great Icy Dock bargains.

You can learn more from the Icy Dock website.

Here is another video about the enclosure as well.

BYOB Episode 29 Out Now

The guys over at the BYOB podcast, including our very own Tim Daleo, have just released episode 29 – and this one includes more on Sandy Bridge.

BYOB300

Here is what they say about this weeks show:

This week Mike Shares his thoughts on his new Intel Sandy Bridge Build. Tim gives a primer on Eyefinity multi-monitor technology. The crew then tries to breakdown the intricacies of a multi-panel setup and what the average builder needs to think about when looking into multiple screens for increasing immersion of their gaming experience. This will be part one of a series of “Eyefinity” features where we will touch on the GPU, monitors and mounts, as well as integration, budget, tips and tricks.

As usual you can listen to the show here.

XBMC Now Available On Apple iPhone, iPad and AppleTV

Today saw the release of XBMC for the Apple iPhone, iPad and AppleTV. I for one an quite excited!

Back in December we published our hands-on review of XBMC 10.0, and we loved it.

And now for those of us that have Apple devices, such as the iPhone, iPad or the new AppleTV, we can get XBMC as well.

AppleTV 2

This thing may fit in your pocket, but don’t underestimate its power. Unfortunately, it is seriously lacking in capability due to its limited feature-set revolving around rentals and iTunes. Where’s the fun in that?

  • Full XBMC install, this is not a remote or thin client streamer.
  • No longer is your AppleTV2 chained to iTunes.
  • Who wants transcoded video anyway?
  • Share files on your network your way.
  • Full hardware decode for 720p/1080p movies.
  • Everything else you know and love about XBMC.

Apple iPad and iPhone4

What good is a tablet that makes you play by its rules? We at XBMC want our media our way.

  • You guessed it, this is full-blown XBMC. Not a remote.
  • Launch XBMC like any other app.
  • Drag and drop media from your computer, or share it on your home-network
  • Also fully hardware accelerated for most formats.
  • Works on iPhone4, though it’s currently frustrating to use.
  • Challenge: Who will be the first to create a gesture-driven skin?

It is important to note though that you will have to jailbreak your Apple device in order to get this to work, so if you are not comfortable doing it then this unfortunately isn’t going to be able to you.

You can learn more from the XBMC website, and expect a more hands-on post soon.

The Home Server Show 120 Backups Dissected

Dave and the guys over at the Home Server Show have released episode 120, and this one is all about backups!

home_server_show_small

Here is what Dave has to say about this weeks show:

News is going to be slow until the next beta release of Vail but we do have a couple of items for you.  On an exciting note the HSS Forums has opened up to Developers who want to control testing of their Add-Ins.  John is back and the ustream chat was lively.  AJ joins to talk about his backup article and we go over a lot of different options for Windows Home Server backups, retention, restoring, cloud backups, etc.

And as usual you can listen to the show here.

Synology Release Beta of DiskStation Manager 3.1

Today Synology released the beta of their DiskStation Manager 3.1 product, and you can download it today.

DSM 3.1 beta

DSM 3.1-1553 beta for all models (x07, x08, x09, x10. x11 series) has just been released on our website, and it includes many exciting new features to help improve business efficiency with the new Storage Manager, secure your environment with the smart Surveillance Station, enrich your life with many new multimedia applications, the last but not least, the new and improved iPhone/iPad apps are coming soon on Apple App Store. Mail Station 2 beta application has also been released to allow users to fetch multiple email accounts onto their DiskStation, a centralized location for easy management, as well as a perfect email backup system.

Here is the full press release:

Advanced NAS Server OS brings versatile features and is available for free download

Milton Keynes, United Kingdom—January 20, 2011—Synology® Inc. today announced the beginning of DiskStation Manager 3.1 (DSM 3.1) beta program. This new NAS server OS brings a collection of new features that boost:

Management efficiency with multiple volumes on a single RAID, sharing of print/fax/scan on multifunction printers, and enhanced Synology File Browser

Data availability with shared folder synchronization and dual disks redundancy

Mobile devices enrichment with AirPrint® support and native apps for iPad®

Multimedia enjoyment with advanced Download, Audio, and Photo Station

Surveillance solution with smart search and video analysis in Surveillance Station

“We recognize the ever increasing volume of digital assets is challenging enterprises. IT managers are struggling to feed the expanding capacity and manage enormous storage pools,” said Rosiel Lee, product manager of Synology Inc. “The new Storage Manager precludes the challenges with the flexibility of creating multiple volumes on a single RAID. IT managers can now expand volume size dynamically and set a shared folder’s quota by leveraging this unique technology.”

DSM 3.1 evaluates the efficiency of various operations. Synology DiskStation is the very first to support the sharing of print, fax and scan on a multifunction printer. Multiple administrators can now log on the same Synology DiskStation. In addition, File Browser supports preview of photos, videos, PDF, and Office documents, along with various searching criteria, making searches more precise and quickly. Getting the results has become timelier by performing database index to file names.

Enterprises call for data availability and reliability. The DSM 3.1 provides a workaround by allowing users to schedule synchronization of specific shared folders from one Synology DiskStation to another, providing an immediate recovery solution and allowing documents to be shared seamlessly. In addition, the Synology Hybrid RAID technology now supports two disks fault tolerance.

Furthermore, users can choose multiple destinations in network backup for stacked layers of protection while the Windows ACL support allows data to be restored along with its complex access permission settings.

Synology is gearing up to meet the ever increasing demand for mobile device support. The industry’s first AirPrint support allows users wirelessly print documents from iPhone and iPad to any AirPrint-enabled printer connected to DiskStation. Additionally, the iPad-native DS photo+ and DS audio applications are now available. Their tailor-made UIs bring intuitive hands-on experience. By shaking iPad gently, the playing song will immediately jump to the next. Furthermore, the new DS file application allows the users of iPhone download and upload documents from and to Synology NAS server.

The DSM 3.1 extends users’ multimedia experience by offering several overhauled applications. The Download Station automates every process, from searching downloadable files on the Internet to aggregating the latest available torrent through the RSS feeds. The Audio Station 3 features an equalizer to facilitate hearing sensation, a mini player to contribute to multitasking, personal playlists and editable ID3 Tags. The Personalized Photo Station allows every account user to host his or her own photo album and blog. Users can easily share the link of a photo album on facebook, twitter, and PlurkTM.

Surveillance Station 5 now runs on Internet Explorer®, Firefox®, and Chrome®, and allows users to detect any motions, missing and foreign objects, camera occlusion and focus lost, and adjust image quality for detailed viewing. The Mail Station 2 supports multiple email domain fetching and multiple SMTP servers to offer centralized management of all emails and protect users’ privacy. Additionally, selected Synology DiskStations are VMware® vSphere™and Citrix® XenServer™certified, and compatible with Microsoft Hyper-V™, providing a seamless storage solution for virtualization servers.

The Digital Lifestyle Show 289 CES 2011 Part 2

Ian over at the Digital Lifestyle.com has just released The Digital Lifestyle Show 289 which is part 2 of his CES 2011 coverage. We will be back to normal next week, so expect lots from Ian, Garry and myself.

DLS Show

Here is what Ian has to say about this weeks show:

Welcome to the second and final batch of CES interviews.  As mentioned last week Windows Embedded team had a private room showing a great range of Media Center systems powered by Windows Embedded, including set top boxes, TVs and entertainment systems and I have an interview with Mark Pendegrast from the Embedded team talking about Media Center. Mark explains what the embedded team are doing with Windows Media Center and what kind of systems we expect to see. They are doing some great work with Media Center and Embedded and Mark talks about embedded set top boxes, TVs and entertainment devices all powered by Windows Media Center

I also have some great other interviews, Ford talk about Ford Sync and applink and how you can get apps running in the car with iPhone or Android. Charlie Mertz from Evolve Media talks about their embedded Windows Media Center systems. Dolby’s Kevin Brennan talks about their PC software and how they are working with OEMS to enhance the sound coming from laptops. Then we have Michael Martis from the BYOB podcast, Garry and Andrew recorded at a bloggers party and an interview Garry conducted with Morgan eBook readers and tablets.

As usual you can listen to the show here.

CES 2011 Fallout New Vegas as seen through my Pip Boy

From the Mohave Outpost I could see Nipton Road, Ivanpah Dry Lake, the Bison Steve Hotel, the NCRCF and Nevada Highway Patrol. If I could only avoid the Powder Gangers on the way to CES 2011…

CES 2011 in Pictures

Once I got there I checked into the El Rey Motel and got my equipment. I needed consumables, paper notes and caps. Boy, did I need caps. “Pip” Boy that is. Seriously, forget tablets. Give me a friggin Pip Boy.

It was then time to head out. I was going to use the monorail despite what the NCR said!

As with any level 35 Blogger (yes it goes to 35, I got the Dead Money add-on), my first priority that first evening was fuel cells…

Technocel

The people at Technocel were cool enough to give me a charge for my HTC Fortress.

This compact charger has a built-in battery that can give you up to 4 1/2 hours of talk time. It has a USB port and will hold a charge for up to 1 year. At $50 is a little costly but if you need portable power then it is a great choice!

CES 2011 in Pictures

Lenovo VaultTec

My second priority was to secure beverages by talking with a Vault Technician.

CES 2011 in Pictures

Michael Martis beat me to it. BYOB my friend, BYOB.

CES 2011 in Pictures

Gigabyte Ammunition

The next step was to secure some clips and some 5mm at the Gigabyte event.

Yes, that is a real board.

CES 2011 The SWAG Post

With all the photos of CES being posted, I thought it might be fun to post photos of some of the SWAG we amassed at CES! And this is only the stuff we actually brought home!

Pens and Pen Drives

Everywhere you go at CES, either on the show floor or at press-only events, there are pens and pen drives. Here is just a selection of some of the things available.

IMG_3610

iPhone Cases, iPad Cases and Screen Protectors

This year the rage seemed to be iPhone and iPad cases, along with screen protectors, wipes and other assorted things. Some were really quite good (thanks again Sonos!).

IMG_3614IMG_3616

IMG_3615IMG_3625

Useful and Strange

Then there was the very useful things, such as the HD video camera from Toshiba, the portable power strip from Monster, the Hello Kitty pen drive (yeah, I try to find the cool Hello Kitty stuff) and a set of waterproof bags in case you want to dunk your phone in a fish tank!

IMG_3611

IMG_3612

IMG_3613

IMG_3617

There were also phone battery packs (very useful when spending 12-14 hours at CES).

IMG_3618

I even won a Seagate 500 GB GoFlex Drive by finding a the Seagate guy who was wondering around the show floor and showing him a tweet. Now I have to admit it was actual luck, I read the tweet and happened to turn to my right and there he was – and so the drive was mine!

CES 2011 in Pictures

CES 2011 was a great event and was full of great products, great press events and great memories. Take a few minutes to look at some of the pictures from CES 2011.

Once I got there I met Andrew and checked into the hotel. After a quick lunch it was time to go to the Venetian and register. The monorail is the way to go.CES 2011 - Monorail

CES 2011 More Booth Tours

Last week I posted a tour of the Microsoft booth from CES 2011. Here are some more tours around some of the booths at CES 2011.

CES 2011 – The Venue

The venue for CES 2011 was Las Vegas (as I am sure everyone probably realises by now), but the actual event was spread over multiple halls at the Las Vegas Convention Center, the Las Vegas Hilton, The Venetian and many other meeting rooms and suites throughout Las Vegas. All of which made it “interesting” to get from place to place in time for any meetings!

IMG_3533IMG_3534IMG_3535IMG_3536

The Samsung Booth

Samsung once again had a huge booth covering everything from 3D television, laptops, phones, washing machines and internet enabled refrigerators!

IMG_3380IMG_3381IMG_3382

They had some live demos on how fast their SSD’s were compared to other drives.

IMG_3384IMG_3385IMG_3386IMG_3387

They also had one of the Windows 7 tablets on display – I wasn’t allowed to touch it or film it but I was allowed to take pictures. One thing I did notice was how similar the look on the screen was to that of an Apple iPad (take a look at the 2nd picture below to see what I mean!)

IMG_3389IMG_3391IMG_3392IMG_3393IMG_3394IMG_3395IMG_3396
