More Information On What Are Tranquil PC Doing with Windows Home Server 2011

Earlier this month we told you exclusively what Tranquil PC were planning on doing with Windows Home Server 2011. Now we have some more information for you.

Tranquil

This is what they told us today:

Microsoft will shortly launch Windows Home Server 2011 licences, we expect this to be early May 2011.

Tranquil PC already has the following two devices that will be available, running Windows Home Server 2011:

· T7x1           A miniature single drive Home Server including 2GB RAM and a 2TB Hard disk

· SQAx5       A five drive system with one expansion (further five hard disks) – complete with Disk Manager Add In coupon*
(fitted with 2GB RAM and a 2TB primary Hard Disk)

The T7x1 will be available for £339.00 + VAT, and the SQAx5 will be available for £469.00

* The robust Disk Management Add In, supplied in conjunction with DataCore, will be available in its beta version, and by the end of June the fully released version will be supplied.  A coupon will be provided with each SQAx5 for a fully licenced copy of the DataCore Add In.

Both items will be available to pre-order from Tranquil from 28th April 2011.

So that is very interesting that Tranquil will be working with DataCore. I already said a few weeks ago that DataCore’s add-in for Windows Home Server 2011 was the one I was most interested in testing and using, and now that Tranquil are going to be incorporating it as well can only be yet another tick in the box for DataCore.

Expect more information soon.

Remote Notification Add-In Updated to Version 1.5.0.7

Alex Kuretz has released an updated version of his venerable Remote Notification add-in, taking the release to version 1.5.0.7.

RemoteNotification_128

Here’s how Alex describes his add-in application:

Home

Remote Notification is the Add-In for Windows Home Server that keeps you up to date on the status of your Home Server no matter where you are.

Home Users and Small Business Owners

Your Windows Home Server contains all your important files, and you want to know when an issue comes up. Remote Notification lets you know immediately whenever your Home Server has a new health alert by your favorite method of communication such as email, SMS (text messages), Twitter status updates, or RSS feed.

You also have a high level of control over what messages you receive, with the ability get only errors or both errors and warnings, configure Exclude Filters that prevent messages being sent when they contain specific text, and make sure you aren’t awakened at night with Notification Schedules.

Remote Notification can forward all health events generated by your Home Server, including those issued by other Add-Ins such as Home Server SMART or Remote Alert.

Even with so many features, Remote Notification is very easy to configure. SMTP Presets take the work out of configuring your email provider for sending messages, and there is full documentation available including tutorials to help you quickly set up all the features. And it’s all backed up by support from Windows Home Server experts that have been supporting the community for years.

See the features and requirements for a full list of everything you can do with Remote Notification.

IT Support Professionals and Windows Home Server Resellers

Remote Notification gives you the power to proactively monitor your customer’s Home Server, often allowing you to resolve an issue before your customer calls you or is even aware of the problem. Email and SMS messages let you know instantly whenever there is a new health event on the customer’s server. The Daily Reports serve as a daily “heartbeat” to notify that the server is running properly and also provides many useful statistics such as free space on the OS drive, free space in the storage pool, Windows Update status, client backup status, installed Add-In versions, and much more. Or set up the RSS feed and monitor the notifications from the home servers of all your customers via your RSS reader.

See the features and requirements for a full list of everything you can do with Remote Notification.

Future Products

Remote Notification currently runs on Windows Home Server with Power Pack 3 or later. We will be investigating opportunities for the next-generation products of Windows Home Server 2011, Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials, and Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials as those platforms become available.

The current version, 1.5.0.7, has the following updates:

* Bug: Client Health Errors in Daily Reports now correctly display as Red instead of Yellow
* Feature: Client Backup in Daily Reports now displays “Never Backed Up” instead of Jan 1 1601
* Feature: Daily Reports now display Available and Total physical memory and virtual memory
* Feature: Daily Reports now display additional Windows Update statistics: Last installed, Last checked, and Reboot required
* Feature: Changes to the Remote Notification service to speed up start time

If you’re running an earlier version, head on over to Alex’ site and upgrade.

Two Minute Review of the Radiopaq Flex Earphones

In another of our two minute reviews, we take a look at the Radiopaq Flex Earphones, designed for use with the Apple iPhone and iPod.

UWHS Review - Radiopaq Flex Earphones

Who Are Radiopaq?

Radiopaq are a privately owned UK company. The goal is to develop a high quality range of portable audio, superior acoustic devices and state of the art multimedia products.

A UK based Design and Development team are tasked with bringing the latest innovations and the Intelligent Portable Audio Range, of which the dots earphones are an outstanding example is the first in a range of products that will be launched in the UK this year.

The mantra of the company is to bring out the highest quality products, with top of the range features and benefits, whilst offering exceptional value for money.

Radiopaq Flex Earphones

Here is how Radiopaq describe the Flex Earphones:

Unlike traditional sports earphones which are often rigid and harsh to wear, the Radiopaq Flex headphones offer a unique over-the-ear design made from a combination of rubber silicon and industrial plastic to offer the perfect balance between stability and comfort across all ear sizes and shapes. The super lightweight and semi-flexible ear hook is designed to help prevent the ear piece from being pulled from the ear and keeps the wires towards the back of the head to avoid them getting in the way during serious training sessions. The Flex earphones come bundled with a selection of three sizes of silicone ear-cushions to provide a customised earpiece that firmly fits even the knobbliest ear-canal. This choice of ear cushions make the Flex not only more comfortable to wear than other traditional sized and more bulky or rigid options, but ensures a sealed fit inside the ear delivering excellent sound isolation as it effectively cuts out more of the ambient background noise – reducing the maximum volume needed to clearly hear audio, and so allows safer audio levels for ears.

The Flex incorporates a convenient touch-button remote control on the cable, featuring volume controls, play, pause and track selections for easier control on ground, ramps or in air. Automatic call cut-in makes answering phone calls with your iPhone effortlessly hands-free using the built-in mic on the remote control –and will restore back to the music once the call has been terminated – so no more fumbling for your phone in the middle of high powered action. Radiopaq’s remarkable Flex headsets produce a sound quality to rival far more expensive models, performing to the highest acoustic standards producing clear high quality, Hi-Fi audio even whilst the user is in motion. Flex deliver performance across all frequencies from high to low; for bass without rumble and crystal clear vocals.

Using the Earphones

The first thing you need to do is ensure that the correct size earbuds are being used. So just try the earphones on and test the different earbuds.

UWHS Review - Radiopaq Flex Earphones

Then when you are happy just connect them up to whatever device you want to use with them and away you go!

Final Thoughts

I found the earphones to be very light, so much so you almost don’t feel them at all. I found them very comfortable to wear, especially for a prolonged period of time, like a train journey.

I really liked that they included different size earbuds – this is something that is often overlooked with they style of earphones.

The sound quality was really good as well, and the inclusion of both the Apple remote and mic was a very clever idea.

All in all, if you want a good set of this style of earphones, you should take a close look at these. And the price is very reasonable as well!

Pricing & Availability is £24.99 inc VAT and available now from HMV, Game, and online from amazon.co.uk, LA Muscle and radiopaqproducts.com.

Boot Devices, Windows Home Server and Restores – A Supplement to BYOB Podcast #39

In the latest episode of BYOB we talk about bootable devices, the boot sequence and give you a brief overview of the Windows Home Server Restore process. Read on to find out how bootable devices are the key to starting your computers operating system and check out the podcast to find out how Windows Home Server makes the Restore process easy.

Boot Devices – A Supplement to BYOB #39

Boot Devices – A Supplement to BYOB Podcast #39

http://homeservershow.com/byob-episode-39.html

When you press the PC power button, your computer will go through the BIOS start up. The BIOS runs POST (power on self-test) and then looks for a storage device that that is bootable. Once it finds a device that is bootable it loads the boot sector. The MBR code then looks at the partition table for an active bootable partition. Once it finds an active partition, the MBR code loads the boot sector code which loads the operating system kernel. The kernel is the central component of the OS and is a bridge between the software and the hardware processing.

Without the device being bootable you are a “no go” for Windows!

Boot Devices – A Supplement to BYOB #39

For us Windows 7 users, once the boot sector code loads, it loads the Windows Boot Manager (BOOTMGR). The BOOTMGR is what looks for the active partition and uses Boot Configuration Data (BCD) to load Windows.

Boot Devices – A Supplement to BYOB #39

The BCD is just a database that contains menu entries. These entries load Windows, resume Windows and the like. The BCD is used by Windows Boot Manager and is the new version of the boot.ini that is used by NT Loader. NTLDR is used by XP machines and by your Windows Home Server v1. You cannot see these files by default and should not make changes to them.

The graphic below shows the hidden files in Windows Home Server v1.

Boot Devices – A Supplement to BYOB #39

So back to Windows Boot Manager…with Windows Vista and later, winload.exe loads the Windows kernel and the device drivers. The same goes for the latest Windows operating systems. Do not mess with the hidden system files.

Final Thoughts

Putting the iPhone 4 into the case was very simple, and I felt that the case held the iPhone well.

It certainly felt protecting, and is very hard wearing.

The case is slightly bigger than just a normal case, but that is because of the extra protection. If like me you are used to a smaller case, the Reflex case takes a little getting used to.

The only issue I came across was trying to recharge my iPhone in a dock with the Reflex case still fitted. Half of the time the charging was fine, and the other half I needed to “wiggle” the iPhone to get the charging the start. Again, this is because of the extra bulk of the case.

The cost of the Reflex case is $44.95 and comes in multiple colours.

If you want some added protection for your iPhone, then you should seriously consider taking a long look at the Reflex Series Case.
