If you are old enough to remember the UK TV Classic Knightmare it has been resurrected to celebrate YouTube Geek Week!.  Filmed in the original Norwich studios with original cast and crew, and produced by show creator Tim Child, Treguard and Lord Fear once again fight for control of the dungeon…

Marvel Heroes Patch 1.11 includes:

User Interface

New options exist on the chat window to control chat filters.

Floating combat text has been added to test center. Expect a few iterations as we iterate on these to ensure they look good and work right. Green is healing, red is damage and yellow are critical hits.

Additional minor functionality has been added to the Supergroup interface (some sorting technology, display of officer and supergroup name appearing on tab). Additional functionality will be added in future patches.

Additional chat functionality has been added along with “social”, “lfg” and “endgame” channels with UI to control them. More chat upgrades will appear in the future.

Keybinding can now be reverted to default settings.

You can now map mouse buttons 3-6 to various game functions.

The daily terminals will now tell you if you can earn a cosmic shard by completing them. (This still needs testing before going to live server).

Performance Upgrades

Many areas of the game have performance improvements. Some are very significant and noticeable and some are minor. More details will be added in a future set of notes.

Gameplay Changes

Damage-over-time powers can now critical hit.

New Pets

A new silver Ultron pet has been added to the store. Avengers Assemble!

A new crafter summon item has been added to the store. This is a permanent summon item that allows you to summon a crafter every hour.

Items

Eternity Splinters now drop at an extremely high rate for test center. Live drop rate will be lower, but this should help test the vendor much faster.

Adam Warlock appears beside Gambit in each hub, selling Heroes and Retcon potions for Eternity Splinters. Many more items will be added to Adam Warlock over time. Look for a forum thread asking for suggestions from you on what should be added.

Adam Warlock also sells a random hero box that could contain any hero, with a slight rarity curve based on which tier of hero it is (i.e. 600 Splinter Heroes appear slightly less, 200 Splinter heroes appear slightly more). We aren’t sure if we are going to put this into the game and we would like your feedback on it.

Many crafting elements are stackable up to 10.

We are experimenting with some gear number changes to increase the impact of gear at higher levels. This will require tuning. Basically higher-level gear will be more impactful to your damage and defense.

Darkhold Scroll gives bonus damage to ‘taunted’ enemies.

Experience orbs from bosses last longer so they won’t disappear during cutscenes.

Mandarin Medal tooltips clarified. Several other tooltips rewritten or clarified. We will keep iterating on this when players report confusion about exactly what an item does.

Medal sell price is now higher, as intended.

The Bovine Sector recipe can be sold for 5,000 credits, so players have something to do with it when they find a second one.

To ensure you don’t accidentally donate a recipe, there is a confirmation pop-up.

Six costumes have very minor name changes to conform with Marvel lore.

The ‘Mystery Eggs’ have hatched into gift boxes. They will hatch into a Starter Hero you don’t own, or a Fortune Card if you have unlocked all of the heroes. Note, whatever your egg produces on the Test Server may not be the same for the Live game – it’s a random choice.

Unstable molecules go into crafting S.T.A.S.H. tabs now. Testing will be required to confirm this on edge-cases.

Costume Cores

All costume cores now have either 25% item rarity boost or 20% special item find, in addition to other bonuses.

We realize most players prefer one of those bonuses, so we added those to every core in addition to other bonuses so players could personalize their heroes better.

All cores will have 0-2 additional bonuses in addition to item rarity boost or special item find. New bonuses have been added to cores, which you will discover.

Existing cores are unchanged.

Missions

Many small and medium sized changes to missions in various chapters. Too many to list, but should continue to make the new player experience smoother and more fun.

New Zone Content

A few new mob types have been added in the world. In addition Poison Cloud and Missile Shield may be present on enemies. With the latter, missile users will need to enter within approximately half screen range in order to damage the enemy.

The following zone content has been added by the world team. Most of these were slated for launch but didn’t make it in.

  • CH1: “Symbiote Infestation” side mission in Crumbling Brownstones
  • CH3: “Demonic Incursion” event in the Bamboo Forest
  • CH7: “Dinosaur Graveyard” Treasure room in the Dinosaur Jungle (new extra large TR format)
  • CH7: “Sacred Valley” Treasure room in the Dinosaur Jungle (new extra large TR format)

PVP

New PvP modes are in progress, but not in this test release. The new “Fire and Ice” themed PVP map is under heavy internal testing and development and will be released in August. It will be available on test center in a few weeks. Other modes are in various stages of development.

Limbo Completely Revamped – New Zone Added

Enter Manhattan to keep the city safe. More detailed notes on this new mode are forthcoming.

Highlights:

  • Patrol Manhattan to fight crime, save civilians and keep the city safe.
  • Available for all levels of players.
  • New super villain groups attack the city periodically and must be shut down.
  • No time limit, no “threat” meter. Everything is challenging, but manageable with the right gear and tactics.

Heroes

Hero upgrades happen every day; MANY upgrades will appear on test server in the next week but will not be captured in these patch notes.

Wolverine

Wolverine has been improved. Damage on powers is increased instead of relying on the power damage synergy system; damage synergies have been wiped out and replaced with higher base values across the board. We’ll be monitoring this shift closely to see if it has the desired effect of making Wolverine more interesting to build without really shifting his overall power level.

Even with the new Critical Hit proc direction, the AoE Basic Power Hack ‘n’ Slash wasn’t really hitting an appealing niche, so we’re remaking it as a Basic Power that generates bonus Fury on hit/crit.

We’re narrowing the attack speed gap between Quick Slash and Wolverine’s other Basic powers by speeding Bloody Slash and Hack ‘n’ Slash up (Quick Slash will remain the fastest option).

Adamantium Skeleton now unlocks at level 20, features higher Physical and Energy resistance, and increases Tenacity against all negative status effects instead of just forced movement.

The missile defense component on Feral Senses didn’t really accomplish the goal of pairing minimap radar with something that impacts Wolverine builds, so we’re replacing that aspect of the power with a scaling Crit Chance bonus and making it unlock at level 8.

Wolverine’s bleed effects should now tick every half second instead of every second for smoother damage delivery.

Adrenaline Rush is now a toggled effect that reserves a portion of your Spirit and can be left on indefinitely, buffs have been retuned to scale more smoothly across ranks to fit the new behavior.

Regeneration Boost is getting a slight decrease in cost and increase to the amount healed.

Cage The Beast should no longer be usable when Spirit is already full.

Hulk

Hulk’s hit points increased by 20%.

Like all heroes, Hulk is training in the danger room and will emerge better, faster and stronger in the near future.

Character Sheet and Damage Rating

A few new stats have been added to the character sheet. We are looking to iterate on this and ensure that it is easy to understand.

Players were sometimes confused when the equipped an item with +10 damage and didn’t get +10 damage on every power. This is because every power has a damage rating multiplier, this multiplies the damage rating stat which now shows up on the character sheet.

We are going to add Damage Rating Multiplier to each powers tooltip at some point in the future.

Autofire powers, particularly, get less Damage per shot because they have a low Damage Rating Multiplier while Hulk’s Punch gets full value from Damage Rating.

This does not change any powers or items, it is simply a presentation change.

Review of the Samsung SSD 840 EVO

Last year we reviewed the Samsung SSD 840 PRO SSD and it was our favourite SSD. Now less than a year later Samsung have released the 840 EVO series and we have been testing the 1TB model.

Samsung has announced the entry-level SSD ‘840 EVO’ line-up with significantly higher sequential write performance. Utilizing the industry’s most compact 10nm-class 128Gb high-performance NAND, Samsung proprietary controller and Turbo Write drive, the Samsung SSD 840 EVO boasts superior performance. The Samsung SSD 840 EVO also has flexible product supply capacity, making it the most competitive device on the market today.

Compared with the 250GB 840 Series SSD, the highest selling capacity of the 840 lineup, the new 250GB 840 EVO now delivers 520MB/s sequential write speed – making it more than 2 times faster than last generation. In the case of 120GB model, the 840 EVO achieves 410MB/s sequential write speed, which is approximately 3 times as fast as that of the 120GB 840 Series SSD.

For the 1TB 840 EVO SSD, the sequential read/write performance has reached 540MB/s and 520MB/s. Furthermore, both the random read and write performance have achieved the highest level, reaching 98,000 IOPS (Input Output Operations Per Second) and 90,000 IOPS, respectively.

The Samsung SSD 840 EVO introduces two important features for data security: hardware-based AES 256bit Full Disk Encryption (FDE) and PSID. Hardware-based AES Encryption helps safeguard data against attack by encrypting all information on the disk at the hardware level, which means there is no detrimental effect on performance.

When you forget your SSD security password, PSID protects your data on the drive by executing a cryptographic erase which returns the drive to its factory status, preventing any unauthorized access to your data.

SSDs

Solid State Drives, or SSDs, are innovative data storage devices that deliver high performance, reliability, and quality by using NAND Flash memory instead of the magnetic disks used in traditional Hard Disk Drives (HDDs). SSDs provide very fast PC booting and application loading speeds and perform exceptionally well in multi-tasking environments – all while consuming less power, emitting very little heat, producing no noise, and offering outstanding stability compared to conventional HDDs.

The MagPi, a free online magazine dedicated to the Raspberry Pi, whose first issue was released a few days ago, is a perfect example of that. It’s been put together entirely by volunteers, guided by Ash Stone, Jason “Jaseman” Davies, Meltwater and other names you may recognise from the forums and comments on this site. I was broadly aware they were up to something, but I was amazed at the scope of what they sent me to look at earlier in the week, and I’ve been really, really impressed by the first issue. There are Debian and Puppy guides, articles on computing history, ideas for robotics projects, tutorials in Scratch and Python (with code you can type in yourself, just like in the good old days), features about the Raspberry Pi itself, and other goodies to dig into. I really can’t recommend it enough, and if you haven’t been lucky enough to get to the head of the queue, you don’t need a Raspberry Pi to find it useful (you might actually find the magazine good preparation before yours arrives).

Review of Civilization V: Brave New World from 2K games

Brave New World is the latest expansion pack for Civilization 5 – although describing Brave New World as an expansion pack really doesn’t do it justice. A massive roster of changes can be seen in Brave New World and each one actually feels not only well implemented but actually kind of crucial. So well integrated are these new features that they are in fact difficult to tell apart from the main features of the original game. Those who have God’s and Kings will be familiar with a few of these features, mainly religion, but in Brave New World even these are enhanced enormously so that they make more of a difference to the world, and ultimately, victory.

One of the most important features new to Brave New World is trade routes. You can now build units that are capable of trading both with other players in the game as well City States. You can also trade internally within your own cities providing much needed resources to a city that lacks food or production. Or you can use internal trade routes to spread religion within your own borders. Generally speaking trade routes can be quite lucrative. There is no need for any real micromanagement either, once a trade route has ceased the unit requires your attention before turn end and you can select one of the available routes from a list and off it goes. It will continue to generate the resources of the route until it has finished at which point you can pick the same route again or choose another. It’s a very useful feature and it’s nice just to have it ticking away in the background.

On top of trade routes and a more advanced religion mechanic Ideologies and World Congress now shape the world your Civ lives in. There are 3 ideologies you can choose from; Freedom, Autocracy and Order. In my last game I played as England and chose Freedom. Sadly for me every other nation on the map had decided to go for Order and soon my people felt left out and became unhappy with Freedom. Luckily you can alter your ideology and conform to the pressures of diplomatically superior nations. I did so and received huge bonuses to happiness, chose a different set of Ideology bonuses, and carried on. It’s great to see that Ideologies have been added and in fact change the game quite noticeably. The bonuses you receive are good and I love the fact that the globally accepted standard ideology makes an impact on everyone. Although with a strong enough nation you could fight it and establish your chosen ideology as the prominent one.

The World Congress will meet occasionally to vote on different, potentially world changing, decisions. Stuff like the banning of a certain product which may weaken a certain nation dramatically but make little to no difference to another. Depending on the amount of delegates you have you will be able to vote by differing amounts. When I played as England I had very few, at 6, where Persia had above 12 at all times. Most decisions where based on what they said. When they banned trade with me and there was nothing I could do about it it was uniquely both frustrating and impressive.

You can also now use your spies to infiltrate other nations and bargain for votes under the table. This is particularly useful when you have plenty of spies but absolutely nothing for them to do. Rather than them just sitting at home using up all your resources and making people miserable you can send them out into the wild and get yourself some more sway with the World Council.

But that’s not all. Brave New World also adds a much improved cultural victory system by allowing you access to many more ways to improve a civ’s culture. Not least of which is tourism. Depending on how many great works you own, such as famous paintings and pieces of music, and how many cultural buildings you have you will get increased culture from tourism. It really is a viable way to achieve victory now, especially with the added wonders.

With much more interactive and effective world politics thanks to the World Congress system, more buildings and much better victory conditions, Civ 5 now gives you way more choice. Even (very) late game you can attempt a last minute switch to a different type of victory. After planning a conquest victory and not quite getting things on track I realised I was actually pretty close to launching my mission to space so started researching and manufacturing like the sun wouldn’t rise tomorrow. Sadly a different nation beat me to victory with diplomacy but I very well might have won the space race if left to it. And this was as late as 2020!

A vastly improved late game, with more activities early and mid game too, make for a much more fleshed out experience – avoiding the inevitable lulls almost entirely. So well integrated are the new features of Brave New World that you can hardly tell it’s there. But it really is. Each feature adds something to the game. They all seem subtle and remain independent of one other, but when you rack up all the changes Brave New World makes, it’s almost a whole new game. Brave New World simultaneously draws no attention to itself yet completely alters the feel of Civ V. It does exactly what an expansion should do. It benefits and adds to the original without unbalancing, intruding on or becoming too distant from the vanilla game.

Review of Call of Duty Black Ops 2: Vengeance DLC From Activision

 

Well, once again it’s time to slip into my well worn try-hard pants and tackle the latest offering from Activision and Treyarch. Named Vengeance; as per usual, it incorporates four multiplayer maps and an all new zombie experience. With an upgraded version of the Ray Gun, cunningly named the Ray Gun Mark II and an old fan favourite map reimagined from the original Black Ops, this could well be yet another success.

4320Cove - Vacation Paradise

Cove, an abandoned island smack bang in the middle of the Indian Ocean is the setting for our first multiplayer outing. A relatively circular map, centred around a crashed airplane, of which should be a campers paradise, yet instead the smashed cockpit frames our would be target finding banes making them easy prey. Without too many head-glitch spots, gameplay is fairly fast paced, domination leading the charge for frantic spawn flips, with each team vying for map control. Search and Destroy works surprisingly well considering it’s easily one of the larger maps on the game; yet with many side routes into the opposite spawn, getting the drop on your enemies happens much more regularly. Plus, don’t forget to look out to sea for a cheeky glimpse of a familiar sight…

Detour is a multi-tiered, predominantly decimated suspension bridge. Complete with wrecked cars, exploitable flanks and height advantages to be wary of. Reminiscent of maps of yore, Detour feels very gunfight orientated as opposed to Hijack or Aftermath. Gunfights are not necessarily won or lost due to twitch reactions, cover is plentiful and feels more natural. Even after taking a couple of hits, it’s very possible to come out of cover swinging and proceed to win the engagement. Due to it’s end to end, almost narrow nature, slipping into a comatose state of inattentional blindness can be fatal. Many adjoining paths can lead to the unwary falling prey to a spawn trap because of this.

4321Detour - Congestion Ahead

Rush, the already famed paintball map seems to be the fan favourite in terms of map selection votes so far. Incorporating many play styles into one setting has proven effective, there is an upper walkway perfect for rushing with shotguns or securing a line of sight with an assault rifle. On the opposite side nestles the paintball arena, full of bags even FMJ rounds from an LMG cannot pierce through, leading to tense cover to cover sprints. A lurking campers’ haven, many players get ganked from a suppressed SMG around here. Unlike most conventional maps, the middle sees the least action despite it’s relative openness, instead most people favour the to and fro of controlling the indestructible bean bag room. A distinctively colourful warzone, Rush feels akin to Grind, the skate park map from the Revolution DLC, the paintball scenario let’s the palette flow with spatters of red and green gracing the battlefield.

Uplink, another adaptation of one of Black Ops most loved maps, Summit. Artistically, Uplink has clearly received some loving. Not only does it now actually resemble a high-tech facility, it also comes across a little foreboding and steeped in mystery. The dark atmosphere transforms it completely and makes it easily the most visually arresting map on the game. For anyone who’s had the pleasure, Uplink is almost identical to Summit, all the tricks and tips you remember are still here. The annoying crane you can make a leap of faith to, still presents it’s threats from spinning lunatics with snipers, rushing the opposing teams spawn at the start still ends in tears for me and clambering to the upper catwalks on the ‘B flag’ to lurk menacingly still catches people off guard.

4324Rush - Shooting Hot

Buried is the latest zombie experience on offer, probably one of the more difficult maps to get to grips with; not necessarily the largest either. Several new toys to play with can make your Western adventure go a little easier however. New weapons include the upgraded Ray Gun, an old school revolver and even a way to fly…sort of. Tagging along on your quest to the highest possible rounds is your new alcoholic and candy loving hick. Feed him some booze or sweets to smash walls, grab zombies, fetch the mystery box etc. experimentation is very much encouraged. Pretty much starting off with the LSAT gives you an idea of how hairy some of the situations can get on Buried however, narrow streets can/will be your downfall! As per we all expected, the major Easter egg is a nightmare to complete even with a cooperative zombie felling team, yet the rewards are worth it! Perhaps not quite as exciting in terms of design choices for me as Mob of the Dead on the Uprising DLC but still unique enough to lose your life for a few weeks!

A stellar performance on the multiplayer maps front this time around, there genuinely isn’t a map here that I wouldn’t vote for in the rotation; I’m eager to get back to playing some of the more intensive game types once most people have them. Buried will be another great addition to the train fans too. The only issue being, is that they spoiled us with the first DLC and the Peacekeeper; without another cheeky weapon to play with asides the slew of artillery available on zombies, it can at times feel a little disappointing. Vengeance honourably feels as though the developers have listened to what people want out of the new maps: variety, colour and less camping spots; they’ve listened and best of all, acted upon it.

When the daughter of ex-special ops agent, Rick Quinn, is kidnapped, he becomes a one-man army that goes on a mission from the docks of Miami to the rivers of South America.

The secret technology Quinn has been working on to stop the drug cartels’ latest trafficking technique of using narco submarines has put him in the cross-hairs of a long lost friend.  When Quinn discovers that his ex-partner, Jay Delgado, is running the subs and the cartel that took his daughter, this fire-powered vendetta gets personal.

Quinn also has a love for heavy machinery, and will be piloting helicopters and aircraft, battling through enemy lines consisting of massive tanks, armed helicopters and fast planes. Add different play modes from 2D side-scrolling to top down vertical sequences, all presented in blazing visuals, Narco Terror offers game play diversification never seen before.

Up to two players can lay a path of destruction in Narco Terror in both local and online co-op, with seamless drop in and drop out at any time.

David Goldfarb — Game Director of PAYDAY 2 — as he takes us into the Safehouse, the aspiring criminal’s sanctuary, where you will be able to hone the skills that will keep a good heist from going bad.     The Safehouse also acts as players bragging rights — you can spend cash on upgrading it, making it into your own crime nest.   Players can see how much cash they have earned in their own personal vault and try out the customised weapons they own in their private shooting gallery

Game Lock In for Watch Dogs and AC4 Today at Game

This week Ubisoft has been hosting a series of “Lock-ins” at GAME stores around the UK featuring hands-off demos of the E3 builds for both Watch_Dogs & Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag.

These events have been taking place after the stores close and are a fantastic opportunity for the public to see the games live in action before release. Namco Bandai Games today initiated pre-flight checks for the first free-to-play game in the legendary Ace Combat series, ACE COMBAT INFINITY. Coming exclusively as a free download for PlayStation3 via PlayStation Network, ACE COMBAT INFINITY combines features that are important to the fans from previous Ace Combat titles with a brand new story campaign and team co-op multiplayer. The game is scheduled for take-off later in 2013.
