Tranquil PC Announce Windows Home Server Power Pack 3 Support

With the impending release of Windows Home Server Power Pack 3 (that would be tomorrow for those of you who haven’t been following), Tranquil PC, makers of such Windows Home Servers as the SQA-5H have announced that all Windows Home Servers shipped from next week will be shipped with Power Pack 3 installed as standard, and that all existing customers will be able to get a new server backup image that contains Power Pack 3 from next week as well.

Tranquil had this to say:

Tranquil PC are now completing new builds with Microsoft’s Home Server Power Pack 3 included:

Power Pack 3 improves the Windows Home Server experience with Windows 7 and Windows Media Center by providing new features like: backup and restore of computers running Windows 7, Windows 7 Libraries integration, enhancements for Windows Media Center, and better support for net book computers.
Power Pack 3 will enable the most optimal experience for Windows 7 users on a Windows Home Server network.

Units shipped from early next week will have PP3 pre-installed.

Also, Tranquil will release new downloadable ‘server backup’ images for existing clients, so that if existing servers need to be re-imaged, they can be with the latest PP3 pre-installed.

“This immediate integration of PP3 into our UK factory built Home Servers continues to demonstrate our commitment to the popular Tranquil Home Server range”

InvisiTasking® technology is a truly transparent, background processing technology that allows your PC to be defragmented in real-time, so your high traffic-traffic volumes don’t experience the detrimental effects of fragmentation between scheduled defrags.
  • Windows Home Server Console Integration. Only Diskeeper 2010 HomeServer includes full integration with the primary WHS management console. From any PC or laptop in your home you can adjust a setting, or view the History graphs — everything you need is available for easy access.
  • Extend the productive life of your Home Server. Extend the effective life of your Home Server by as much as 3 years.
  • Increase your Windows home server reliability. Hang-times, freeze-ups and other fragmentation-based crashes on your Home Server affect every other PC and laptop in your home. Fragment-free drives will ensure your gigabyte-sized movies stream to your video screen without a hitch.
  • Speed up your anti-virus scans. Experience faster back ups and avoid system crashes resulting from fragmentation-related problems.
  • Protect your system from crashing. Boosts the reliability of your Home Server by automatically preventing crash-inducing fragmentation of critical system files. Leave hang-times, freeze-ups and other fragmentation-related crashes in the dust.
  • Defrag even with less than 1% free space. Defragment even in the most extreme hard drive environments — with less than 1% free space or with files split into millions of fragments.

Features include:

  • NEW! IntelliWrite fragmentation prevention technology
  • Terabyte Volume Engine (TVE)
  • Breakthrough Technology! InvisiTasking
  • Real-time defragmentation
  • Uncompromising file and free space defragmentation
  • “Defragmentation Intelligence” enhancements
  • Automatic online directory consolidation
  • Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) Compatibility mode
  • Boot-Time Mode
  • Home Network support

For those of you who are interested, here is the press release:

Diskeeper Corporation today launched Diskeeper® 2010 Performance Software—the only product available today that actually prevents fragmentation before it happens. Utilizing a new revolutionary technology called IntelliWrite™, Diskeeper 2010 intelligently writes files to the disk to prevent up to 85 percent of fragmentation from occurring. Coupled with Diskeeper software’s superior defragmentation technology, Diskeeper 2010 delivers a complete performance solution for every Windows system at every site, and goes far beyond what defragmentation alone can achieve.

The negative effects of file fragmentation have been battled since the invention of the modern computer in an effort to negate its crippling effects on performance and its life-shortening toll on hardware. Originally defragmentation could only be performed manually, and was followed soon by scheduled solutions. Scheduled defrag remained the only solution until fairly recently, when fully automatic defrag came along, giving IT back considerable hours while keeping system performance and reliability consistently maximized. Now fragmentation can be prevented before it occurs.

Diskeeper 2010 takes enterprise network performance far beyond what defrag-only can achieve. Prevention coupled with the advanced features in Diskeeper 2010 makes previously unapproachable levels of system efficiency a reality. Significant savings are achieved reducing energy consumption and cooling—even more than is done with conventional defragmentation.

Diskeeper 2010 with IntelliWrite prevents the majority of fragmentation before it even happens and for any fragmentation that does occur, Diskeeper 2010 utilizes the most powerful defragmentation engines created to rapidly handle any remaining fragmentation with zero impact on system resources. Diskeeper 2010 also optimizes file placement for fast access utilizing its I-FAAST® technology. Diskeeper 2010 is the only complete solution for eliminating the harmful and costly effects of fragmentation.

“I am very impressed with Diskeeper 2010, particularly the IntelliWrite feature. I do a lot of speech recognition, and noticed a big difference, as IntelliWrite addresses fragmentation proactively. This is a major advantage for disk-intensive applications. The performance for achieving proactive fixes vs. reactive was very fast – I noticed a significant shift within one day.” said Joseph L. Marion, Principal at Healthcare Integration Strategies, LLC.

“There are several interesting and useful improvements in Diskeeper 2010, the most important of which is speed,” said David Yohn, Ph.D., Director, Marchi Thermal Systems in Redwood City, California. “Not only does the IntelliWrite technology speed up disk defragmentation since it prevents fragments from occurring, and not only does the software simply perform its functions much faster than did earlier versions, the benefits of improved disk optimization means the systems run faster all the time. Every function seems faster, especially those that use large disk files like PhotoShop or AutoCAD. I was afraid that the IntelliWrite feature might become a system resource hog and slow performance, but the opposite is indeed the fact.”

Key Elements
The benefits of Diskeeper 2010 include dramatically improved system performance from faster file reads and writes. By curtailing the excessive I/Os associated with fragmentation, wear and tear on the drive is greatly reduced, resulting in extended hardware life. Behind the scenes, free space is consolidated, further reducing the chances of future fragmentation, and the location of the most commonly used files is optimized for faster access. All of this occurs with zero impact on system resources.

Diskeeper 2010 contributes to an enterprise’s “green” initiatives by reducing energy consumption and by lowering overall cost of enterprise operation while enhancing speed and reliability providing an even faster return on investment (ROI). An additional benefit is that data/file replication traffic and storage requirements times caused by technologies which monitor block level data access, such as snapshots, are also significantly reduced.

Diskeeper 2010 with IntelliWrite offers enterprises the powerful, yet easily managed, tools to put fragmentation issues behind them—completely and forever. Diskeeper 2010 is the only way to prevent fragmentation before it happens.

Installing a Tuning Adapter in Windows Media Center on a Friday night

I am now in my second week with my new CableCARD ATI Digital Cable Tuner and I will explain how the unit is working with Windows Media Center 7. In addition, I will show you the new Cisco STA1520 Tuning Adapter that my cable company installed today.

Windows Media Center

Background – Revisited

Now that Windows 7 has the Digital Cable Advisor, anyone who passes the test can get a CableCARD and Digital Cable Tuner for their PC and start watching and recording HD cable TV. You need a cable provider that supports CableCARD but most of us have that anyway. This is not as complicated at all. It is actually easy and I promise looking back 4 months from now that you will see we were heading in the right direction!

Two weeks ago I walked through the installation process of an ATI Digital Cable Tuner (DCT) in Windows Media Center 7. My cable company (Charter) installed the CableCARD and I have been up and running ever since. Previous articles can be found at:

https://moviesgamesandtech.com/2009/11/09/installing-a-cablecard-digital-cable-tuner-with-the-new-digital-cable-advisor-on-a-friday-night/

https://moviesgamesandtech.com/2009/11/15/reviewing-cablecard-recorded-tv-in-windows-media-center-on-a-friday-night/

Equipment Needed

  • Windows Media Center 7 PC
  • Cisco STA1520 Tuning Adapter and active CableCARD
  • DCT on a qualified WMC7 system
  • Two Beers (Optional as always)
  • Windows Home Server with Power Pack 3 (Optional for the TC Archive function)

Lets set this cow on fire!

CableCARD Setup

This short video shows the entire process of how a CableCARD is set up in WMC. I edited out 20 seconds of the program download screen. Adding that edit back in the whole process is complete in less that three minutes!

Switched Digital Video – Revisited

Although I get all of the basic cable channels on the DCT, and all of the local HD channels, there are still some channels I am missing. On the ATI DCT I did not get upper tier channels like Discovery HD, TBSHD and Universal HD. Charter recently changed to switched digital video (SDV) and I need an additional component called a “tuning adapter” to get these switched channels.

Cisco STA1520 Tuning Adapter

My Charter tech arrived at 2:00 pm today with a brand new Cisco STA 1520 Tuning Adapter. It took all of about five minutes to install the Cisco and activate it. It connects to the coax, a power supply and a USB connection to the PC. Totally easy.

Cisco Tuning Adapter

Once he plugged it in I started the PC and the Cisco STA1520 was immediately recognized.

Device Manager

After an initial activation call to his supervisor the power light turned steady green I was ready to verify the Tuning Adapter status.

I entered the IP address of the DCT and I clicked on Tuning Resolver. I have no idea what all this crap means but it says “Tuner Resolver operational” so I am happy.

DCT Device Web Page

Live SDV TV

Well it seems to be working…

Mars Attacks on a Friday night

Conclusion

This wraps up the CableCARD series of articles. I hope I have generated some interest for CableCARD tuners and hope that Ceton, ATI and Hauppauge deliver new DCTs to us in the coming months!

The whole process has been a learning experience and I am very excited about the new options for CableCARD. I feel that the results have been better than I expected and the actual process of installation and set up is quite easy. Let me recap the basic installation steps of the last three articles:

  1. 1. Run and pass the Digital Cable Advisor in WMC 7
  2. 2. Buy a DCT that supports CableCARD
  3. 3. Have your cable company to install a CableCARD and Tuning Adapter
  4. 4. Let Media Center and Windows 7 recognize the equipment
  5. 5. Run the TV signal setup while the Cable tech is there
  6. 6. Watch and record HD TV!

See you next Friday night,

Timothy Daleo

Windows Home Server Power Pack 3 Out November 24th

Microsoft today officially announced the release date for Windows Home Server Power Pack 3. We have talked a lot over the last 6 months about PP3, so it’s to finally see it ready for release.

Here is the full press release from the Windows Home Server Team:

The Windows Home Server Team is pleased to announce that Power Pack 3 will be available in all shipping languages (Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish) on November 24th, 2009. Power Pack 3 will be made available to existing users via Windows Update. Users need to have Windows Home Server with Power Pack 2 already installed on their home server. Power Pack 3 will automatically install as part of Windows Update if Automatic Updates is enabled on the home server.

As we’ve communicated in a past post, Power Pack 3 improves the Windows Home Server experience with Windows 7 and Windows Media Center by providing new features like: backup and restore of computers running Windows 7, Windows 7 Libraries integration, enhancements for Windows Media Center, and better support for netbook computers. Power Pack 3 will enable the most optimal experience for Windows 7 users on a Windows Home Server network.

“If you’ve recently upgraded to Windows 7, Windows Home Server Power Pack 3 is an essential download providing enhanced integration between the two platforms and a number of cool new features. Combine library support with enhanced features for Windows Media Center, and we’re really starting to see Microsoft bring together the Windows Home Server and Windows 7 client experience so that your media can be stored on your home server and enjoyed seamlessly on TV, PC and Mobile devices with little effort from the user. The bad old days of copy, paste, convert and transcode may well be behind us,” says Microsoft Most Valued Professional (MVP) Terry Walsh of We Got Served.

Microsoft MVP Alex Kuretz of MediaSmartServer.net says “Windows Home Server Power Pack 3 makes storing and accessing your media easier by bringing all the content contained on your Home Server smoothly into your Windows 7 libraries. TV Archive is also a very nice feature that has allowed me to record TV shows and move them to my Home Server to be watched at a later time.”

Here are some details on what’s new:

Windows 7 Libraries integration

When you install the Windows Home Server Connector and log on a computer running Windows 7, you can access the Windows Home Server shared folders from the Windows 7 libraries.

Windows 7 Action Center backup warning suppression

After you install the Windows Home Server Connector to enable the home server backup for your computer running Windows 7, you can suppress the Action Center warning reminding you that Windows Backup has not been set up.

Windows 7 power settings

You can configure your computer running Windows 7 to wake up at a scheduled backup time and then go back to sleep after the backup finishes.

· Console support for Windows 7

Windows 7 is properly displayed as the operating system shown in the Computers & Backup tab.

Windows Search

Windows Search 4 is included to improve query search times, indexing times, and reliability. Extended Remote Discovery increases the efficiency of searching across all your libraries running Windows Search 4. Files encrypted with EFS are now supported.

TV archive

Windows Home Server can automatically archive recorded TV by moving your recordings from a Windows Media Center computer to your home server in the format of your choice. This enables playback in the correct format for your home computers and/or portable devices.

Console view

You can view information about your home server’s storage space, hard drives, backup status, and more from Windows Media Center.

Complete details are available in the Power Pack 3 Release Documentation.

We want to thank our community for all of their testing and feedback over these past months with the Power Pack 3 Beta. You validated that Power Pack 3 was ready for release. We like to think that we are building this product together – as a passionate community.

Tech Tip on a Tuesday Morning – SyncToy 2.1

Having a Windows Home Server is a great way to store your videos, pictures and files so how do you manage the files between your PCs and the server? How do you synchronize files between multiple drives? Microsoft provided an answer. SyncToy 2.1

SyncToy

Tech Tip

We all have a lot of data that we store and manage. I have 6 PCs at home, each with different functions, and it was difficult to manage the data files on each PC. Of course WHS kept them backed up but I was always dragging files to the server and then deleting old folders and trying to remember which folder had which version of each file. What a pain.

The solution? SyncToy by Microsoft. SyncToy has been around for a while but has not received any real attention. It is a real simple way to synchronize folders.

Download Link and Installation

Download and installation is easy. The link for SyncToy 2.1 is:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=C26EFA36-98E0-4EE9-A7C5-98D0592D8C52&displaylang=en

SyncToy

Using SyncToy

SyncToy is a very simple tool. Double click on the icon. Create a link to a pair of folders:

SyncToy

Choose the type of Sync you want to perform:

SyncToy

Name the Sync:

SyncToy

Run the Sync:

SyncToy

ALL DONE!

Mental note: Microsoft has a disclaimer on this tool.

This tool is not part of Windows:

Note: We’ve taken great care to ensure that this tool operates as it should, but it is not part of Windows and is not supported by Microsoft Technical Support. For this reason, Microsoft Technical Support is unable to answer questions about SyncToy. To speak to other users and contribute feedback about your experiences with SyncToy, please use the SyncToy forum at http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/synctoy/threads.

Results

I am very impressed with this tool. It is quick, easy and a breeze to run. I use the SyncToy at home to make sure my iTunes folder on the WHS always has the latest music files I have bought and downloaded.

I use the tool to sync all of my work files to one of our central servers so my people can always get the latest versions of my database files.I click on All Folder Pairs and run as I am walking out the door and the server is updated while I drive home.

SyncToy

I added WHS folders as drive paths to make it easy to Sync.

SyncToy on WHS Folder

See you next Tuesday,

Tim

Made for Media Center – The App Store for Windows Media Center

4

My friend, and fellow MVP Ian Dixon, he of the The Digital Lifestyle, has just launched a new site called Made for Media Center.

made for media center

This new site is an app store for Windows Media Center and looks set to be the place to go to get your Media Center apps.

Ian says this about the site:

Here is a collection of the best apps for Windows Media Center in one location, once you have downloaded an application Made for Media Center will keep track of the latest updates.
You can filter by category or use the full text search. Best of all you can search and install apps from Windows Media Center via the Made for Media Center addin

The site is currently in beta, so go take a look and give Ian your feedback.

Click here to go to the site.

Great job Ian, I don’t know where you find the time 🙂
