Review: The Dark Pictures – Man of Medan

The PlayStation exclusive ‘Until Dawn’ was a title that took me completely by surprise. Horror games fail to have an impact on me, jump scares do not work on me and often I can find them rather tedious as you have to put up with forced elements trying to make you feel scared or terrified which always fail to work on me. Until Dawn however was a wonderfully written and executed mystery thriller which used player choice to completely direct the narrative with the very fate of the characters in the hands of the player. When I head that the team were working on a follow up, it certainly had my attention but the worry was whether or not they could recapture the magic of their first success.

Sadly that worry turned out to be a case a rather hit and miss experience with Man of Medan which is built upon the building blocks of Until Dawn and whilst it does manage to refine and even add some interesting new elements to the gameplay, it also sadly forgets a few part of the winning formula that made Until Dawn an unmissable title.

The story opens up with a little back story as meet two US soldiers at the end of WW2 out on a final night of shore leave, drinking a little too much before returning to their ship. This section is pretty much a very quick tutorial into how the quick time events and dialogue exchanges work so if you are unfamiliar with the core mechanics this will bring you up to speed and for those who did play Until Dawn it serves as a nice refresher. But it also encounters to perhaps the biggest character in the game and something that will return later in the story to really liven things up.

Once this prologue is completed, we then get to see the new characters and well, the first big issue with Man of Medan kicks in. One of the strongest elements to Until Dawn was in the large group of characters players were given to get to know with a stellar cast of voice actors who brought their personalities to life which was crucial because their performance helped forge the connection players had to them whether you felt sympathy or liked and disliked them. This connection is vital because it directly impacts the very choices a player will make to either keep them alive or to put them in harms way or in my own personal case, if a mistake is made that costs you a character that you actually liked. Where Man of Medan immediately drops the ball is in its own cast of characters a very small group of just five characters.

We first meet the brothers Alex and Brad as they are the first to arrive for their groups diving expedition and the clumsy use of generic stereotypes for the characters becomes abundantly clear as Alex is the athletic jock big brother character whist Brad is your very typical clean cut nerdy character who is clearly very smart but not very socially aware. Next up we meet Alex’s girlfriend Julia and her brother Conrad who both make it so very clear that they have wealthy parents. The big issue I have is that none of these characters are immediately likeable other than Brad but the lazy way in which he is presented was so off putting for me. To really illustrate just how jarring the voice acting is, even Sean Ashmore who voices Conrad, hams it up so much every chance he gets that even when Fliss the boat captain is introduced to complete the group, Ashmore delivers the most wooden performance when a forced scene of flirting between Conrad and Fliss is perhaps the most awkward scene of all.

That is where Man of Medan falls down the most, the dialogue and character interactions in the first hour or so are no where near the quality of Until Dawn. Even when I tried to shape the dialogue to make the characters seem less annoying, a cutscene would then play that either totally ignored the one of the dialogue choices I made or just went in a completely different direction. There is a moment once the dive has begun, where three shadowy figures approach the boat whilst divers are in the water in a moment that is the turning point for the group and as Fliss is trying to not give the game away that they have people in the water, Conrad starts throwing money into the sea trying antagonise them for some strange reason considering the danger it represented to himself and Fliss not to mention the people diving who would have no idea what was happening back on the boat and none of the dialogue choices I had made before this moment event suggested that this would even happen. It can be so distracting to have a situation suddenly happen which ignores anything you thought you had set up with your choices.

The story telling can also at times feel more focused on the cutscenes and trying to deliver a cinematic narrative which works best once the story jumps to the strange ghost ship you see in the trailers linking back to the prologue. I won’t go into too much detail here as this is really where Man of Medan does come to life but just as the voice acting and script bring this game down, it also suffers from very janky gameplay with slow movements which just makes moving around the environments heavy slow and though you can hold LB to “speed up” your walking, it never feels like it makes a difference. Navigating around the areas can feel laboured as you wait for the next event to trigger. QTE moments still have an impact and your first run through the game will feel more like a practice run for the next times you play through in order to not only be ready for when the vital QTE moments happen but also to see if you can change outcomes in order to see other possibilities. Like Until Dawn the Butterfly system returns now in premonitions to give players a hint at a possibly future should shouldn’t options be taken or not taken.

So far, the above does not paint a very inspiring picture for the game and honestly, I found it lacking in almost every regard where Until Dawn manage so effortlessly to accomplish but it does have one party trick that does make it stand out, online co-cop. The game is really designed to be played by two people and whilst it can be played solo that is only the second play option. When played in online co-op, both players play through the same story but there are moments where each player will control a different scene which the other will not see such as in the first half of the game when the three pirates appear with one player controller what happens above whilst the other controls what is happening with the divers as both scenes play at the same time.

When the main action of the story kicks in, the same system can really lift the story telling to a new level as two players and their actions, choices or mistakes can really change the same story for both players. Exploring the game with this system is something that comes close to saving the Man from Medan, which has an OK story despite its own self destructing nature to undo the mystery it wants players to solve themselves, this co-op system is really the highlight and something that will be a big factor in the next Dark Pictures titles.

But Man of Medan falls very flat in all its failings and faults which is a real disappointment for the team behind Until Dawn which came out four years ago. The new co-op system is a great addition and the formula of story telling combined with player choice that made the first game such a successful as simply buried under a less than riveting story and characters as forgettable as their voice actors.

This is the first in a series of standalone stories but more attention to detail and delivering the same experience that the Until Dawn had is essential for this new series of games to recover from this opening taste test. This is already at a fairly cheap price but honestly, this is one for the sales with so many titles releasing this time of year, Man of Medan is definitely one for the player to choose “pick up in the sales” instead of rushing out to buy it, I would recommend returning to Until Dawn if you are able to instead.

Constructor Plus is Available Now for PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch

System 3 today launched Constructor Plus for Xbox One, and announced the game is available now for PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. Today’s Xbox One launch follows the game’s release earlier this year on PC, where Constructor Plus has already received 90 percent positive reviews from the Steam community.

First launched in 1997, Constructor is a cult classic from the golden age of PC gaming that has been loved by players for more than 20 years with releases on formats including MS-DOS, Sony’s original PlayStation, PlayStation Portable and even Nintendo Switch. Two decades later, Constructor Plus is the first-ever sequel to Constructor, bringing the classic isometric gameplay to modern platforms with new content, new features and new ways to play.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8-GCzYJAW4

Constructor Plus puts players in charge of building a city-spanning property empire in a game where simulation and management meets real-time strategy. Arson, thievery, mischief and all-out mayhem are the tools for taking on rival building companies and dominating the property market.

Players can employ a dodgy handyman to flood a rival building, a hippy collective to turn a respectable neighbourhood into a party capital, or shady gangsters to take out the opposition’s foremen before building can even begin. Things get weirder when ghosts spook people from their homes, zombies rise from their graves and killer clowns stalk the streets.

Players can rise from small-time slumlord to interplanetary property tycoon, moving from small towns to space stations on Mars, Uranus and the Moon with unique off-world buildings and habitats. Constructor Plus features new campaigns, new story missions, 65 scenarios, 17 worlds, and over 140 buildings including all-new retail units, casinos, modernist mansions, towering skyscrapers and lunar bases.

“2019 has been a brilliant year for revivals of nineties’ classics, and the perfect time for us to launch a true sequel to Constructor,” said Mark Cale, founder and CEO of System 3. “It’s great to see new players discovering that classic era for gaming, and great to see returning players rediscovering games they loved. That’s why we’ve made Constructor Plus available just about everywhere games can be played. Whether you’re an old player or new, you’ll find lots to love and lots to discover.”

Constructor Plus is available for PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. Today’s Xbox One launch features five additional scenarios, exclusively for the platform.

My Thoughts…

Quite a mixed back with this edition of Inside Xbox, some great new looks at upcoming titles but very little in the way of actual surprises. Pacing definitely suffered towards the and with very little revealed about XO19 we did not already know.

But it was great to see some of the devs talking about their upcoming titles with The Outer Worlds looking like everything I liked about Fallout but taken to a whole new and revamped level. Project X Cloud preview will have people racing to sign up no doubt. Afterparty is certainly on my radar now after seeing more of the gameplay and it is great to see so many great titles coming to the Xbox Game Pass for both console and PC and I am intrigued by the ID@Xbox Game Pass reveal.

Overall though I felt this LIVE edition of Inside Xbox had real pacing issues and sadly fell back into its previous attempts to blend news alongside a QVC advertising special with the attempts to sell GEARS 5 branded Rockstar energy drinks and DLC for ACE Combat 7 which came out of nowhere. It sadly lacked the punch of previous ‘Inside Xbox’ shows and the almost after thought of talking about XO19 at the end felt very lazy to me.

But now the eyes of Xbox fans and players will certainly now be focused on XO19 in November, which is certainly where my attention is now on!

Death Stranding Limited Edition PS4 Pro Console Reveal

After Party Trailer

MLB The Show 19 with Last of Us Remastered coming to PS Plus this October

The Last of US Part 2 Story Trailer with February 21st 2020 Release date

My Thoughts….

Short and to the point with this month’s State of Play, some good reveals with Arise capturing my attention immediately and whatever the hell Wattam is , first looks at CoD Modern Warfare story and an awesome surprise to see Medival Demo available right now from PSN Store. PSVR had some love with LA Noire VR available right now as well and a surprise to see Sid Meiers Civilisation VI debuting on PS4 in a few months.

Was not too impressed with the special Death Stranding Limited Edition PlayStation 4 Pro console, but then I now own the GEARS 5 Xbox One X LE Console so…tough bar to reach. Big finish though was always going to be Last of Us Part 2 and a first look at the story makes me very excited for this game when it releases in February 21st 2020 as confirmed tonight.

On the same night as a full Inside Xbox show, this State of Play was short and to the point, lots to keep PlayStation fans happy but also leaving them guessing at what else might be revealed before 2019 comes to a close….such as a PlayStation 5 reveal perhaps.

Supergirl: The Complete Fourth Season available on DVD and Blu-ray today

Kara Zor-El is back with the DVD and Blu-ray release of Supergirl: The Complete Fourth Season which is available today! To make sure you are ready to re-watch the fourth season, we’ve created a super quick summary of where we were left at the end of the climactic finale of season three.

To begin, Reign has unleashed her evil plan to turn Earth into a new Krypton, causing devastating seismic earthquakes that threaten the lives of everyone on the planet. In an effort to stop the terrible effects of Krypto-formring, everyone steps in to lay titanic superhero smackdown. The Department of Extranormal Operations, The Legion and more jump in to help stop the destructive event.

We then say an emotional goodbye to Myr’nn, who after sharing his memories with his son J’onn, merges with the Earth’s life force in a sacrifice to stop the Kryptonian witches’ scheme.

Querl Dox, or Brainy as he is better known, tracks down Mon-El and Winn, revealing that despite what they previously though, one of his distant relatives didn’t actually die in the blight. This unnamed foe (who could that be?) has begun wiping out all other A.I.s and Brainy’s safety is no longer assured. He begs Mon-El to help him fight this new nemesis and for Winn to take over his own position despite being a lesser intellect. Brainy explains that Winn has a part to play in history farr beyond anyone’s expectations.

But, it turns out the rest of witches didn’t do a very good job at finishing off Thomas Coville, and he alerts the team to their location. The team sets out to finish the job, with Kara aiming to break her anti-killing philosophy by delivering a lethal dose of deadly Kryptonite to Reign.

Despite her powers and planning, Kara is very nearly beaten by Reign, but is saved by Samantha Arias, previous host to Reign. Regin is defeated, not by the poison, instead by falling into her own cauldron. In the process, she takes a last stab at vengeance, killing Samantha, Mon-El and Alura with laser blasts.

Kara blames herself for the deaths of her friends, and thinks that her plan to kill Regin is what caused this very eventuality. To fix this, she orders the team to find her a time disruption, so she can travel back and fix what went wrong.

Using Mon-El’s flight ring to stave off the effects of the vacuum, Kara flies into the disruption, returning to the past fight with Reign and stopping Sam from landing the fatal blow. Instructing Mon-El to throw her the Harun-El, she travels to the Dark Valley and forces Reign to drink from the weakening well, trapping her in the dimension.

After this tidal wave of action and triumph, Kara explains to Mon-El that living the rest of her days on Argo isn’t what she wants, and that Earth is herr true home. Mon-El, despite his reservations, leaves to join the Legion, giving her his flight ring as a parting gift. Winn joins Mon-El to replace Brainy, Samantha returns to her life with Ruby and Lena passes on the power to create more Harrun-El in a collection of resolutions to the series’ many deep character arcs.

But, not all is well. It is revealed that just as Kara was travelling to the Dark Valley, a Kara duplicate has arrived on the Siberian Border, leaving us with a ton of questions for Season Four to answer.
