How To Fix Twonky Issues in the HP MediaSmart 3.0 Patch 2 Software

This morning I posted about installing the new HP MediaSmart 3.0 Patch 2 software update. No sooner had I posted that than my old buddy Diehard contacted me to tell me about some problems with the update.

Diehard has been working closely with Alex Kuretz over at the MediaSmartServer.net site and this is what Alex has posted:

Since performing the initial install I’ve spent some more time with my EX495 running the update and have encountered a couple of issues.

The first was a problem where I experienced the high CPU utilization caused by Twonky. I eventually narrowed this down to a single video file in my library and have worked around the problem, however this is very frustrating since I did not experience this issue prior to installing Patch 2, and the updated 5.1.1 version of Twonky was specifically supposed to contain the resolution for this issue.

The second problem had to do with the Remote Media Streaming feature. I experienced very poor performance while using the Music streaming feature, with the system exhibiting the following symptoms.

  • Songs would take tens of seconds or longer to begin playing
  • When a song completed, playback would not continue to the next track in the album
  • Terrible, low resolution sound quality for some songs

Alex details the steps you can take to fix the issue – so well done Alex and thank you Diehard!

To read the full post and to see the steps, click here: http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2010/03/04/how-to-fix-twonky-issues-in-3-0-patch-2/

I’m off to fix mine now before I start hitting the issue!

Installing the HP MediaSmart / DataVault 3.0 Patch 2 on a Windows Home Server

A few days ago we reported that HP had released an update patch on their website for owners of the HP MediaSmart and DataVault Windows Home Servers.

That patch is now available to download and install from the Windows Home Server console.

According to the little information that comes with this update, it includes the following:

“this update will reduce CPU load when the media streamer is scanning for media and includes several improvements for the Mac backup feature”

So, you need to be running the 3.0 software before you can run this update patch. To learn more about the 3.0 software update and how to order it, click here.

To install it, go into your Windows Home Server Console, and click Settings, and find the HP update area.

As you can see below, I was running the Patch 1 update.

06-03-2010 07-50-23

I clicked on Check for updates

06-03-2010 07-50-32

The update was found.

06-03-2010 07-51-31

At the same time I received a notification that there were software updates available.

06-03-2010 07-51-42

The update continued to download.

06-03-2010 07-52-49

It’s now ready to install.

06-03-2010 07-59-27

06-03-2010 07-59-37

And it successfully installed.

06-03-2010 07-59-46

As you can see, I now have the new update installed.

06-03-2010 08-00-58

And that was it – I didn’t even need to do a reboot of the server (although I did just to be safe). The whole process only took a few minutes, the update itself is around 33 MB and I’m now fully up to date.

Windows Home Server YouTube Channel Launched

As you know, we here at UWHS are big fans of including videos with our posts – Tim has done lots and lots of videos to help you guys and to show you what he is doing, and I have even done a few myself, and we have been doing them since early last year.

We upload our videos to YouTube as its easier to get them out there and for people to find without necessarily having to come to the site first. People can then subscribe and be informed of a new video each and every time we upload something.

Well now Microsoft have launched a Windows Home Server YouTube Channel.

YouTube Page

This is what Nicole from Microsoft has to say:

Now, with the new creation of our Windows Home Server videos, we have made our very own Windows Home Server channel on YouTube. On the channel, you will find variety of different videos including:

  • Team interviews – learn about Windows Home Server’s team members and how they use the product in their day-to-day lives.
  • Windows Home Server overviews – if you are still learning about Windows Home Server, watch an overview on how it can beneficial in your home or even a small business.
  • Informational how-to screen casts – each how-to video will show you how to use various features of Windows Home Server.

So, welcome guys to the wonderful world of YouTube videos, it’s nice to have you here!

So why not go and subscribe to the Microsoft Windows Home Server channel, and while you are at it, why not subscribe to ours – I know that Tim has a few things going up again shortly 🙂

ASUS Introduces the O!Play HD2 USB 3.0 Media Player

0

A couple of months ago, ASUS introduced the O!Play media device and this week at CEBIT they announced the O!Play HD2, which will be the worlds first networked media player with USB 3.0 support.

asus-oplay-HD2

Details on the O!Play HD2 are pretty sketchy, but it will have USB 3.0 support, it is HDMI 1.3 compliant, various inputs and outputs and much more. It looks very small and so would easily fit into any existing home theatre set up.

I am a huge fan of media streamers and media players, and I can’t wait to get my hands on this to see just what it can do and just how fast it can go!

For more information, take a look at some pictures taken by Engadget at CEBIT, along with some additional information and videos, by clicking here: http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/04/asus-o-play-hd2-spotted-specd-explained/

Intel Expands Intel Atom Processor-Based Platform to Home and Small Office Storage Devices

Yesterday at CEBIT, Intel launched it’s first Atom processor-based platform that is optimised for networked home and small office storage devices. This includes Windows Home Server and Linux devices, to name but two possible uses.

This could be very interesting for lower cost devices, giving up to 50 percent power reduction and an increased performance.

Here is the full press release:

CEBIT, HANNOVER, Germany, March 4, 2010 – Intel Corporation today launched its first Intel® Atom™ processor-based platform optimized for networked home and small office/home office (SOHO) storage devices.

The energy-efficient platform consists of the Intel® Atom™ processor D410 single-core or D510 dual-core and the Intel® 82801IR I/O Controller and delivers the processing performance and input/output (I/O) connectivity required to meet the throughput demands of leading storage vendors such as LaCie*, LG Electronics*, QNAP*, Synology* and Thecus*.

Home server and SOHO network-attached storage (NAS) devices based on the new Intel Atom processor- based platform act as centralized hubs that organize, manage, protect and share documents, photos, videos and music throughout the home and small office. This makes it possible to keep digital content safe and available anytime, anywhere. “NAS systems have traditionally been found in businesses to manage, store and access data,” said Seth Bobroff, general manager, Intel Data Center Group, Storage. “Today, households and small offices have an ever-increasing number of computers, laptops, netbooks and mobile phones that create and consume digital content. This advancement in mobility coupled with the explosive growth of data and media are creating the need for centralized, easy-to-use network storage solutions for the home and small office.”

With an up to 50 percent power reduction and improved performance1 compared to Intel’s previous generation of Intel Atom processors, the new Intel Atom processors paired with the Intel 82801IR I/O Controller enable vendors to deliver cost-effective, feature-rich and reliable systems that scale to support the demands of the evolving home and small office storage market.

“The introduction of Intel’s Atom processor is a critical advancement that will dramatically change the scale of storage solutions across LaCie’s target markets,” said Erwan Girard, professional business unit manager, LaCie. “We are excited to work with Intel and leverage this game-changing technology to offer a new level of powerful and robust features to our customers.”

Powered by the Intel Atom processor D510, LG’s N4B2 NAS device performs fast “reads” and “writes” of large data files and allows up to 20 users to simultaneously stream high-definition-level (30Mbps) data within a local network. “As multimedia libraries grow, so does the need for secure, redundant storage,” said Dong-Keun Lee, vice president, DS Division, LG Electronics. “Network-attached storage has become more than just a fancy disk drive. It is now a secure, redundant vault for your irreplaceable photos, songs and documents. With the innovative, fast data processing features of N4B2, we are emerging as a leader in this segment.”

The new platform features six PCI Express* lanes, 12 USB 2.0 ports, a port multiplier function and eSATA ports that give OEMs the ability to add peripheral devices and expand storage capacity outside of the box. It also features hot plug capabilities for easy capacity upgrades and an integrated gigabit Ethernet MAC controller for improved data transfers to and from the home server or small office NAS device. The storage platform also offers the flexibility to support Microsoft Windows Home Server* and open source Linux operating systems. Additional information is available at intel.com/go/storage.

Intel Atom Processors in Embedded
In addition to the introduction of the storage platform, Intel also announced two single-core Intel Atom processors, the N450 and D410, and the first dual-core Intel Atom processor, the D510, for embedded devices. With 7-year lifecycle support to meet the performance-per-watt requirements of embedded devices, the Intel Atom processor-based embedded platform is ideal for small, energy-efficient designs for print imaging, digital security surveillance and industrial market segments.

The three processors are paired with an I/O controller designed for the embedded market – the Intel® 82801HM I/O Controller – for a 2-chip solution that provides rich I/O capabilities and adds flexibility via high-bandwidth interfaces, including PCI Express*, PCI*, SATA and USB 2.0 connectivity.

Update for HP MediaSmart Server / Data Vault 3.0

HP appears to have released an update for the HP MediaSmart servers, including the DataVault. This update is for anyone running the 3.0 software only.

This is also a download only update at the moment, although this may change so keep pressing your update button.

    HP Update 03010

HP hasn’t released any information on what the update contains, but given all the press recently about the TwonkyMedia fix, it is likely to contain that (in fact it does, see below).

Alex over MediaSmartServer.net posted this last night:

Nigel “Cougar” Wilks and I have spent some time digging into the installer package, and discovered that the only changes included are the 5.1.1 version of the Twonky Media Streamer that is already included in the 3.0 software update for the previous generation servers, and new client software for Mac users. There are no changes to the HP code that runs on the server, and several known bugs with 3.0 patch 1 remain unresolved, such as broken help links, the broken image on the Remote Access Home Page, and various other issues we’ve documented in the forums.

Here’s the official wording from the DataVault download page.

This update will reduce CPU load when the media streamer is scanning for media and includes several improvements for the Mac backup feature.

The update is not yet coming down through the HP Software Update built in to the MediaSmart Server or Data Vault even when a manual update check is performed, however it is possible to manually install the package via the Software Update tab of the Home Server Console.

Note: I’ll recommend that most users wait for the automatic update to come down from HP. For those of you tinkerers that are interested in trying the new patch, here’s how to get it installed on your server.

To download the update, click here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=dv-80555-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=uk&lang=en&os=1005&product=3548165

Thanks to MediaSmartServer.net for the additional info.

I will be installing this later today and will report back on any changes and also when HP include it automatically.
