SATA III Hard Drive Upgrade for Project Lil Fusion

SATA III drives are close to the same price as SATA II drives so if you have a motherboard that supports SATA III now might be the time to upgrade hard drives! Check out this short article on upgrading to the next SATA spec!

WD Caviar Blue

I recently did a build for my test bench called Project Lil’ Fusion – Code name Zacate Light and used a standard SATA II drive for the build.

SATA III Hard Drive Upgrade for Project Lil Fusion

With drive prices falling so quickly I thought it was a good time to step up to a SATA III drive for the Lil Fusion box. The Zacate motherboard by MSI has four SATA III connections and I wanted to take advantage of the speed. Newegg had a sale so I decided to go for a SATA III WD drive.

The drive was only $5 more than the SATA II version.SATA III Hard Drive Upgrade for Project Lil Fusion

Before I replaced the drive I wanted to get numbers on the existing DeskStar SATA II drive. The numbers were in the mid 60s and as expected. In addition, I timed the boot and it was 60 seconds from pressing the button to the Windows desktop.

It was then time to disconnect the power and all of the cables and then remove the motherboard.SATA III Hard Drive Upgrade for Project Lil Fusion

More Using Windows Home Server Changes – The Forums

1

Continuing with our changes to UWHS, the next thing for us to do is update the forums. Jim and myself have been working on these and they should ready in the next few days.

UWHS_DarkBackground_800pixel_72dpi_RGB

Our forums have been around for a while now, and to be honest, they are not that friendly. They work, but they just don’t work well enough.

Also, we get a lot of emails and questions posted as comments rather than people using the forums so we figured it was about time to sort it.

The new forums will have a lot more areas and categories, will be a lot easier to search and use, and we will also be running special giveaways and prizes within the forums, for example prizes for the top contributors, so when they go live, why not join in and help make the UWHS community bigger and better than ever before?

This was our old forum:

We think you will love the new forums – so watch this space, not long now…..

Logitech Harmony 1100 Advanced Universal Remote Unboxing

The Logitech Harmony 1100 Advanced Universal Remote is a unit intended to replace all of the remotes on your home entertainment system.  I had six remotes (that’s 12 AA batteries) for the equipment on the home entertainment center.  While I was OK with the complexity, no one else in the house was.  From six to one!  Nice!  Now the babysitters can turn the TV on!

Here’s what Logitech says about the Harmony 1100:

One-touch activity controls

Say good-bye to cheat sheets. Everyone in the family can select what they want to do—such as “Watch TV”—and your Harmony remote does the rest.Learn more about one-touch activity-based controls.

My Channel Logos Version 2 Coming

My Channel Logos for 7MC is updated to version 2.  New features, and a conversion of the application to a paid model…read on for details.

MyChannelLogos

Andrew first introduced me to My Channel Logos here back in November 2010.  It is an application that allows you to dress up your Windows Media Center in Windows 7 with cool logos for the channels.  It’s a very nice application, and at $3 USD, it’s a bargain.

The developer notified me that Version 2 is now available via email this morning, and I  wanted to let you know about the new features and the conversion to a paid model.

Here’s what’s new in Version 2’s feature set:

What new features are in Version 2?

  • Alter the logo cell to your own liking- Have you ever lamented the loss of callsigns? Whined over the wasted width in the logo cell? Oppose the order of the logo cell? Now, if you want both the logo and the callsign there, you can do it. If you don’t care what the channel number is, you can delete it. If you’d rather the logo appear to the left of the channel number, go ahead. If you think the logos should be centered in your guide instead of right justified, you can center it. With our simple new user interface, you can select which components you want to see in the logo cell, which order they appear in, whether the logo is centered, and how wide the logo cell is. And in an instant, we make all the changes needed to make your guide perfect for you.
  • Increase the number of rows in the guide and mini-guide- Now with just the click of a slider, you can add up to eleven rows to your guide, and 4 rows to your mini-guide. These changes have been carefully adjusted to keep the professional look in Media Center, including a well aligned “View Categories” bar, layout adjustments to fit all the important information, and an extension of the blue fade for those adjusting the mini-guide. These tweaks were originally championed by the Australian Media Center community.
  • Actually automatically update logos- You may have noticed that although the option was in earlier versions of MCL, it never really worked. Sorry about that. But now, MCL will automatically download new logos if available, and then autopopulate, without having to open MCL. So if a new channel comes to your guide, the logo will be downloaded and added without lifting a finger.
  • Help make MCL Better- Now you can create a spreadsheet to send to the MCL team so that we can work on better matching with autopopulate. Not only will this alert us to new channels, but it will give better matches for existing channels, as they can have different callsigns depending on the region and cable provider.
  • Brand new overall user interface- Gone is the utilitarian look of MCL from the past. Without losing the user-friendliness of the previous version, MCL now has a better graphical interface, with new buttons and tabs to better let you leverage all the functions.
  • Brand new Logo user interface that gives you a better idea of what your logo will look like in the guide. It presents the information in a prettier, more informative way.
  • New separate list of callsigns: We’ve also transitioned from the tree-view to separate lists, so that manually adding logos doesn’t collapse the list every time.
  • New Download Screen- Tells you exactly how many logos you will be downloading, as well as a progress bar.
  • Far fewer flakey servers- Our logos and system checks are on much more stable servers now, so hopefully this will mean less problems for everyone.

What’s the same in Version 2?

  • Fast Autopopulate– the same algorithm from V2 will add your logos in seconds.
  • Drag and drop logo assignment- To manually add logos quicker.
  • Exemptions- Choose which logos stay the same during automatic updates or Autopopulate clicks.
  • Logos, Logos everywhere- Access our database of over 1800 unique logos, designed especially for Media Center. We’ve got logos from USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Sweden, Australia, and New Zealand.

Family Diary for Windows Home Server Released

Malcolm Ball from MBALL Business Solutions Ltd. recently contacted us to tell us that his Family Diary application  for WHS V1 has been released.

FamilyDiary

First, a bit about Malcom’s business MBALL Business Services Ltd.:

Services

MBALL Business Solutions was set up in 2001 to provide staff to organisations for the management of their projects. We have many years experience in Project Management, PRINCE2, Business Analysis and building successfull client relationships.

We have managed projects for public, healthcare and private sector organisations and are confident that we can provide a quality service at a reasonable price. Check out the Previous Projects page to see details of past clients and projects.

Software Development

We have over 20 years experience in software development, database analysis, design and development and Windows application development using Microsoft technologies.

About Us

In the Beginning:

In 2001 I made the decision to set up my own company to offer project management services. I obtained my first contract with Sefton Council in Liverpool soon after. I worked on a number of interesting projects at Sefton Council not least a project to install Alley gates to alleyways around the council area. This was an interesting project working with outside agencies for the installation of the gates and maintenance of keys.

The Growing Years:

Since that very first contract I have managed to continue gaining work throughout the years and getting valuable experience in IT technologies as well as Project Management methods.

Where we’re going:

In the last year I have diversified from just doing project management to developing software for both business and pleasure. The latest product suit is Family Diary which provides a database of appointments and contacts for family and friends.

At present there is only one working member of the team which is me. If products take off in the future I may be in a position to employ other people.

Team:

Malcolm Ball

The Chief cook and bottle washer, I manage the company and do the work. I left school in 1970 and joined the Army (Royal Corps of Signals). I served in Northern Ireland, Hong Kong, Germany and Blandford and York in the UK.

I left the Army after serving over 22 years in 1993. On leaving the army, I secured a position as development manager for a small software company based in Cardiff, Wales where I built up a team of 5 people to develop a software application to manage project costs.

I left Cardiff in 1996 to join an up coming company called PWA Personnel Systems Ltd. PWA was one of the leading HR providers in the UK and was eventually taken over by Great Plains and later Microsoft.

I left Microsoft in 2001 to set up my own company and offer project management to public and private sector companies.
