Windows Home Server Security Tips: Force change of the initial password for a newly created Windows Home Server Account

About Windows Home Server Security Tips

As great a product Windows Home Server (and its successors) is it does suffer from one category that probably should have been given a little more attention to and that is security. Now before I get the riot act of “It was designed for the ease use of your average Home User” from the Windows Home Server Community I want to acknowledge that yes I understand that but I still think more should have been done to lock the operating system down more from “unwanted” cyber snooping. Luckily for us Windows Home Server and it’s successors are actually modified versions of Microsoft premium line of Server operating systems Windows Server 2003 SP2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 which means that it can been be configured to do so. So, in the next several months I will be publishing different articles of how to better manage the security of your Windows Home Server along with its newer editions Windows Home Server 2011 and Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials. Since Windows Home Server is also used for Small businesses as well as the Home Office, Business owners may want to incorporate some of these security methods to better protect their data as well.

Introduction

In the 1st of our Windows Home Server Security Tips I’m going to go over is how to force change newly created accounts initial passwords upon logging into your home server for the first time. This method is nothing new which most of you System Administrators (Windows or otherwise) that are reading this article can attest to and have been using this method for decades. There are two main reasons you would want to do this, One the intended user can choose a password that they can hopefully remember it and two you as the family or small business administrator don’t have to send a permanent password to where it could be possibly be intercepted by an unknown third party.

What version of Windows Home Server does this pertain to?

This pertains to Windows Home Server (Now commonly known as Version1); while the steps are similar for Windows Home Server 2011 and Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials there are some steps that are different and it is recommend that this article is to be used only for Version 1 of Windows Home Server.

Disclaimer and Recommendations

While the methods and steps have been tested in a non-production environment to work as written within this article I take no responsibility and the user shall bare full responsibility if there are any repercussions from using the information of this article. It is also further advised to backup your server first before proceeding with any of the steps within this article.

Procedure

1. While the first part of this can be done from the Home Server Console on your client PC it is recommended that you either Remote Desktop or Directly Console into your Home Server for the entire process.

clip_image004

2. Click on the “Home Server Console” Icon on your home server desktop and wait for it to open

clip_image006

3. Proceed to create a new user account as shown in this following How To article provided by MysticGeek from HowtoGeek.com. You can safely ignore the rest of the how to geek article since we need only to create a user account. REMEMBER to give the account you are creating an easy initial logon password (Example: Password1234), the whole reason for this drill is for the end user to change the initial password. Upon completion close the Home Server Console.

4. Now “Right Click” On the “My Computer” icon and click on “Manage”.

5. Within the “Computer Management” snap-in go to “System Tools” and then click on “Local Users and Groups”

Activision launching world’s first over-18 live ad to launch Prototype 2

0

Activision today announced that PROTOTYPE 2, the sequel to Radical Entertainment’s original best-selling game of 2009, will be launched in the UK with the world’s first ever over-18 live outdoor advertisement.

Prototype_2

In London at 9:00 p.m. (BST) on Sunday 22nd April, the live ad will feature actors playing the parts of PROTOTYPE 2’s new protagonist Sgt. James Heller and his nemesis Alex Mercer, as well as Blackwatch military and the disease-ridden Infected.

Recreating action from the game, including a gruesome and bloody confrontation between the Heller and Mercer, the content has been recommended as only suitable for those over the age of 18 due its explicit nature, with an agreement to perform it post-watershed in order to avoid a younger audience.

“Due to the nature of PROTOTYPE 2’s content, the game has been rated by the BBFC and PEGI as certificate 18.  This live action advertisement reflects the game in its hard-hitting, fantasy nature and whilst we’re excited to bring this new game to our legions of fans, it would be inappropriate for under 18s to view it” commented David Tyler, Activision’s Minneapolis Business Unit EU General Manager.

The five minute long experience will be streamed live on the PROTOTYPE 2’s official Facebook page at www.facebook.com/prototype for those of age unable to experience the action live, offering fans around the world a chance to watch the production unfold.

As the PROTOTYPE 2 live ad reaches its crescendo, fans will have the opportunity to vote for one of two endings via the PROTOTYPE 2 Facebook page from 20th April.  The ending that receives the most votes will feature as part of the grand finale of the advertisement.

PROTOTYPE 2 will be available for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation3 computer entertainment system on 24th April 2012, and for Windows PC on 24th July 2012.

Expect our review soon.

Medal of Honor Warfighter Preview

0

Earlier this week we got a preview of the new Medal of Honor Warfighter game, and it looks very cool!

MOHW_ Online Screen 3Written by active U.S. Tier 1 Operators while deployed overseas and inspired by real world threats, Medal of Honor Warfighter delivers an aggressive, gritty, and authentic experience that puts gamers in the boots of today’s most precise and disciplined warrior. Medal of Honor Warfighter is an up close and personal look at today’s battlefield and the fight against the ongoing global terror threat.

Following on the heels of 2010’s Medal of Honor that took the game series out of World War II and introduced players to today’s most elite U.S. warriors, Medal of Honor Warfighter takes players out of Afghanistan to continue to experience gameplay missions with a dotted line to real world incursions. This is Tier 1 on a global scale, featuring real world hotspots and international Tier 1 Operators in Multiplayer.

Medal of Honor Warfighter tells the story of U.S. Tier 1 Operator, “Preacher” as he returns home from overseas only to find his family torn apart from years of deployment. Trying to pick up the pieces to salvage what remains of his marriage, Preacher is reminded of what he’s fighting for – family. But when an extremely deadly explosive (PETN) penetrates civilian borders and his two worlds collide, Preacher and his fellow teammates are sent in to solve the problem. They take the fight to the enemy and do whatever it takes to protect their loved ones from harm.

KEY FEATURES

Dotted Line to Real World Events – From rescuing hostages in Abu Sayyaf’s Basilan, Phillipines stronghold to assaulting Al-Shabaab’s “Pirate Town” on the Somali Coast, gamers step into the boots of Tier 1 Operators as they hunt down the global threat of PETN. Medal of Honor Warfighter is the only game that gives players a view into these real world events and lets them experience the action as it might have unfolded.

The Power of Frostbite 2 – Leveraging the power of the ground-breaking Frostbite 2 engine, Medal of Honor Warfighter delivers incredible video and audio fidelity to enhance the intensity of the battle and deliver this year’s most authentic war experience.

War is Personal for the Entire Family –Medal of Honor Warfighter goes beyond the battlefield and reveals the heartbreaking side of war, told through the eyes of military families. With a story written by Operators from this community, Medal of Honor Warfighter unveils intimate insights into the sacrifices of the warriors on the ground – and their families.

National Pride Online with Global Tier 1 – Internationally, allied military forces also possess their own elite units with similar capabilities. With Medal of Honor Warfighter gamers can represent their nation’s Tier 1 Operators on the global battlefield. For the first time, the Medal of Honor brand introduces multi-national Tier 1 blue-vs-blue team play where the world’s best of the best warriors go head-to-head in combat. The game features 12 different Tier 1 units from a variety of nations including the British SAS, Australian SASR, German KSK and Polish GROM.

One Studio, One Vision – Developed by Danger Close Games in Los Angeles, California, Medal of Honor Warfighter sees the return of key development leads who helped reboot the multi-platinum hit in 2010. The core team is bolstered by industry veterans who hail from DICE, Treyarch and more. Together, this team is united behind a single vision for the game – authenticity, respect and honor for today’s warfighters, with real emotion, real threats and a game designed to highlight the extraordinary nature of the material.

The game will be available 23rd October 2012 – watch this space!

I really enjoyed watching the demo – I didn’t get to play it unfortunately, that task was taken care of by a former Tier 1 Operator who now works for EA, and he did a great job!

The gameplay looks really good, with a number of new features – personally I can’t wait to get my hands on it! The sheer amount of things happening on the screen, explosions, bullets whizzing past your head, water spray, and so on make the game look amazing. And there are some very cool weapons as well!

Here are some more screenshots to keep you going and a short video:
