CES2013: Parrot Showcases Zik Noise Cancelling Headphones

Parrot was showing off their Phillipe Starck-designed Zik noise cancelling headphones at CES2013.  Read on for details.

Parrot was showing off their Phillipe Starck-designed Zik noise cancelling headphones at CES2013.  These are premium, well-built noise cancelling headphones; when I tried a pair out on the CES show floor, the noise all around me was eliminated and I could focus on the music.  In addition, these automatically pause your music when the headphones detect that you have taken them off of your head, have a touch pad area for controlling volume and song selection, fold flat for easy travel and can be used as a bluetooth headset for your telephone.  Here is the press release from July announcing the Zik:

Parrot unveils its first wireless audio and telephony headphones: Parrot Zik.

Designed by Philippe Starck, the Zik headphones host the most state-of-the-art technologies: highly performing active noise control, “spatialized” musical image, touch panel that enables sensual movements, head detection sensor, bone conduction sensor, five microphones and a powerful digital signal processor… With the Zik, Parrot is reinventing audio headphones for a never-before-seen sensorial experience…

Music: a “humanized” musical image…

  • A natural musical image

Because music listening should be harmonious and profound, Parrot took great pains with the sound depiction of the Zik.

The headphone is thus equipped with powerful DSP algorithms (Digital Signal Processing) that build a natural melodic image. This is the ‘Parrot Concert Hall’ algorithm: the music is ‘placed’ in front of you, like in a concert, and does not arrive from right and left. The sensation of a thumping room is over! The acoustics of a concert hall is recreated for harmonious and much more natural listening.

A free application for iOS or Android allows defining the parameters of the ‘Parrot Concert Hall’ effects.

  • Active Noise Cancelling (Parrot patented)

Insistent, muffled or direct… In a plane, in a train or in the street… The noise is everywhere.

To cut oneself off from it, Parrot engineers developed an extremely performing active noise cancelling technology -patented- which eliminates up to 25db for an uncompromising listening comfort, even in extreme conditions.

Hands-free telephony: Conversation, without compromise…

Parrot Zik enables the user to take or answer phone calls hands-free. It offers both user and the person on the other end of the line, conversations with exceptional sound quality, even in a very noisy environment!

The Parrot Zik is thus equipped with two technologies, which jointly cancel the surrounding noise in order to keep only the voice.

  • Bone Conduction Sensor

This sensor, located in the cushion of the left earpiece, detects and analyzes jaw bone vibrations to extract the speech. The headphones can then measure the speech before it is distorted by surrounding noise.

  • Active Noise Reduction (Parrot patented)

In real time, two microphones record the sound and determine its direction. The digital signal processor of the Zik can then determine the origin of the noise and eliminate it.

The innovation of the ergonomic…

Designed as the extension of Smartphone, the Parrot Zik is putting the usage at the heart of technological innovations.

  • Capacitive panel

The access to the basic functions of the Zik is super intuitive thanks to a tactile panel, like those of Smartphones, and located on the entire surface of the right headset. Move one finger vertically to enable volume control. Move it horizontally to launch the next or previous music track. During a phone call, no need to look for your Smartphone. Tap on the right headset to take the call, touch the panel for two seconds to reject it… Quite simply…

  • Head detection

One gesture is enough to pause the music: turn the Zik around the neck… Replace the Zik on the head and the music plays again.

Organic lines…

While drawing the organic lines of the Parrot Zik, Philippe Starck illustrated the “biology-inspired” technologies that Parrot engineers developed.

The Parrot Zik is a ‘fused looking’ object. A sensitive object, full of sensors. The Zik is revealing your emotions. The Zik merges with the body, like a technological extension of you to listen to music.

“Despite its simple and humble design, Zik is certainly today one of our most successful products in terms of intuitive ergonomics,” says Philippe Starck. “The headphones are perfectly balanced and almost seem fused looking like a mere extension of the human body and all its needs. Sound and consequently music are just a search of one’s own world. The more the sound is close to you, the more you’ll like the music and feel comfortable. An object like this is a universe.”

The materials were carefully selected… The surface of the headsets, matte black with a soft touch, expresses the sensuality of the skin. Two steel-like ‘commas’ underline the skeleton of the headphones. Adjustable, the headband plays the contrast between metals’ alloy and “leather-like” band.

Pioneer announced that they are joining the HDBaseT Alliance, which promotes the use of Cat 5e/6 ethernet cabling to carry audio and video in home theater wiring applications.  Future Pioneer home theater receivers are expected to implement the technology.  Here is the press release:

PIONEER JOINS HDBaseT ALLIANCE TO BROADEN CONNECTIVITY OPTIONS IN HOME THEATER PRODUCTS

LAS VEGAS – CES (January 8, 2013)Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. (Booth #1101) and the HDBaseT Alliance (LVCC, South Hall 2, MP25168) today announced that Pioneer has joined the Alliance, which will allow Pioneer to incorporate HDBaseT® technology into its home consumer audio and video products. HDBaseT technology enables the delivery of uncompressed high definition video, audio, Internet, controls and power over a single cat5e/6 cable.

“HDBaseT represents the next significant step in the evolution of the home theater system. Integrating the technology into our products will make setup and control of even the most complex home theater systems faster and easier,” said Chris Walker, director of AV product planning and marketing for the Home Electronics Division of Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. “Pioneer always strives to offer outstanding connectivity, state of the art engineering, and exceptional audio and video reproduction across all of its products. Incorporating HDBaseT is another way to ensure that our customers make the most of their home theater experience.”

“HDBaseT has been embraced by professional AV installers worldwide, which is creating demand from consumers for broader availability,” said Micha Risling, marketing chair for the HDBaseT Alliance. “Having Pioneer join the HDBaseT Alliance will help us meet that growing demand in 2013.”

One Cable for All Connections

The HDBaseT technology is a high-definition multimedia content delivery standard ideal for home entertainment systems and business applications. In a home theater, HDBaseT can connect all entertainment devices in a setting through its 5Play™ feature set, converging uncompressed full HD digital video, audio, 100BaseT Ethernet, up to 100W of power and various control signals through a single 100m/328ft  CAT5e/6 cable with RJ45 connectors.

Consumers can see the features and benefits of HDBaseT-integrated home theater systems in-person at Magnolia Design Centers inside Best Buy stores.

Pioneer Joins the HDBaseT Alliance

In order to integrate HDBaseT technology into its products, Pioneer has joined the HDBaseT Alliance, a cross-industry alliance that promotes and provides a technical standard for HDBaseT technology for the distribution of uncompressed HD multimedia content. Founded by LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Valens Semiconductor, the HDBaseT Alliance and its member companies work together to create a global standard for advanced digital media distribution.

This technology is seen in professional home theater installations, and Pioneer’s adoption of the standard is expected to allow for further growth in the installed base.  One cable to carry all of your home theater audio, video, internet connectivity and PoE requirements would certainly be a boon to installers.

CASIO TO LAUNCH NEW DIGITAL SIGNAGE BUSINESS

Helping Retailers Attract New Customers and Increase Business

LAS VEGAS, NV (JANUARY 8, 2013) — Casio America, Inc. and its parent company, Casio Computer Co., Ltd., today announced plans to revolutionize storefront advertising by launching a new digital signage business at the end of this month. Driving this exciting new business is Casio Signage, a newly developed, powerful tool for helping retailers gain an edge over the competition by attracting new and repeat customers.

Storefront advertising needs to catch the attention of customers and be interesting and relevant enough to entice them to enter. The Casio Signage business takes a revolutionary new approach, leveraging optimum advertising tools and cloud services to attract new customers and increase repeat business.

“Casio is excited to venture into this new business opportunity,” said Shigenori Itoh, Chairman and CEO of Casio America, Inc. “Casio Signage offers a unique way to make audiences feel welcome and deliver content in a more personal manner than simple words or images. This technology is only limited by the number of applications that designers can imagine using it.”

Casio Signage is a cutting-edge storefront advertising tool with the ability to captivate passers-by with a realistic-looking character that talks to them. Using a custom designed screen shaped like a character, content is created to match the characteristics needed to bring people into a store. The character’s appearance and voice can be easily changed to keep customers from losing interest and increase store traffic. Casio Signage is compact and requires no installation work, making it easy to place nearly anywhere. It also offers multilingual support or multifunctional options creating a fully customizable system with content that is most relevant for the customer base.

Together with innovative cloud services such as the distribution of digital coupons, stores with Casio Signage will enjoy an edge over the competition.

Main Features of Casio Signage

  • Realistic images help captivate passers-by and attract new customers
The screen itself is shaped like a character or person, and speaks to visitors to get their attention and invite them in.
  • Content is easily updated to increase store traffic
Retailers simply provide Casio with a still image and text. Casio then animates the image and adds the voice. No video production is required for stores. This process makes it easy to edit the animation for future use.
  • Compact size that can fit almost anywhere
It features a small 18” x 21.10” footprint. No installation work is required.
  • Multilingual support
Available languages include English, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, and more. Customers can select the language they want to hear.
  • Cloud services are available for unique retail promotions
Casio can provide cloud services such as digital coupons for customers with smartphones.
  • Long-lasting light source
The originally developed Laser-LED Hybrid Light Source by Casio delivers approximately 20,000 hours of life.

Here are some product pictures for several of the potential uses:

The unit weighs about 41 pounds, and the copy that the unit recites is user-modifiable.  Casio is organizing a new business unit to take this to market, and the new digital signage will be available this month.

DDJ-WeGO_RED_angle_300dpi 5in

One of the more interesting things that I saw at CES2013 was the DDJ-WeGO DJ controller, introduced by Pioneer in September and providing a good entry-level DJ controller product.  Intended as an entry-level product, the DDJ-WeGO is aimed at those who would like to try basic DJ’ing without the cost of the professional systems.  With an MSRP of $399, and available in red, black, purple, green and white, this is an interesting product.  Here is the press release from August:

PIONEER BRINGS THE ART OF DJING TO EVERYONE

WITH AFFORDABLE DJ CONTROLLER

DDJ-WeGO Ideal for Consumers to Create Personalized Mixes

LONG BEACH, Calif. (August 30, 2012) – Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. Professional Sound and Visual Division today unveiled its most affordable controller to date, the DDJ-WeGO, an ultra-compact system that enables consumers and music enthusiasts alike to mix their own music creatively. For easy setup, the DDJ-WeGO is bundled with the Virtual DJ™ Limited Edition DJ software and has the ability to perform music stored on a Windows PC or Mac.

The DDJ-WeGO is available in five body colors, white, black, red, green and violet, to match a user’s individual taste. The unit also features multi-color LED backlighting for the Jog wheel, and the user interface of the included software can be color customized.

“We wanted to develop a product that anyone can simply pick up and start their quest of becoming the next big DJ,” said David Arevalo, senior marketing manager, Professional Sound and Visual Division for Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. “Even if you have no experience in DJing, the DDJ-WeGO is designed to make it easy for you to mix songs together.”

Mixing Made Easy

Through various visual and audio cues, the DDJ-WeGO DJ controller makes it easy for beginners to learn how to mix with built-in effects and features:

Jog FX – Allows users to combine multiple effects and control them simultaneously using the Jog wheel.

Pulse Control – Provides users with visual prompts with a variety of colored lights on the Jog platters:

    1. Mix Pulse – The mix pulse mode shows the difference in pitch of songs currently playing through the light of the Jog wheel. As the pitch of songs begin to match, the intensity of the light increases, allowing the user to visually check that the beats are in sync. In conjunction with the music, the pulse of lights helps to improve beat matching skills.
    2. Launch Pulse – Triggers a red light on the Jog wheel to signify that music has been loaded successfully.
    3. FX Pulse – The effect being applied to the currently playing song will not only be heard, but will also be represented visually via the light movements on the Jog wheel.

DJ Software – The DDJ-WeGO is bundled with the “Virtual DJ Limited Edition” software by Atomix Productions (Windows or Mac) that offers a broad range of functions for mixing songs, including making loops and creating samples, as well as the ability to mix up to four channels for unlimited user creativity and mixes. The DDJ-WeGO has the ability to support other DJ software including Algoriddim “djay.”1

USB Power – The DDJ-WeGO utilizes power from USB connections found on most computers, eliminating the need for an external power supply.

Other features

  1. Built-in audio ports for high quality sound input and output.
  2. Built-in sound card for expanded music storage and portability.
  3. Compact size and weighs less than four pounds for easy transportation.

Konnet sent us a silver cradle to test with the Galaxy S3.  Does it meet the test?  Let’s find out.

Design

The all-metal stand looks great, and compliments your Galaxy S3 well.  The stand is stamped from aluminum and sits well on the table.  However, to avoid marring the surface of your desk, it requires two clear plastic feet that attach to the stand, and these came off every time that I transported the cradle in my briefcase.  These will get lost eventually; I’d prefer something permanently attached to the stand.

Function

I noted no real impact on audio sound using this stand.  As it charges only via USB, it charges more slowly than the standard charger/stand combination sold by Samsung, but that is a function of it being a USB-only charger.  The Galaxy S3 fits on the charger, but there is plenty of side-to-side motion that can happen; the phone does not feel overly secure on the stand.  In addition, the charger itself came out of the stand multiple times.  While it snapped right back in, I am not sure how durable this solution would be; the charger should not come out of the base at all.

Overall Value

This charger MSRP is about $30.  The Samsung stand, which includes a line-out connector for playing audio back to a stereo and magnets for triggering the in-charger dashboard, is priced at about the same price on Amazon.Com, is built better and transports more effectively.  The removable feet seemed like an afterthought, and something permanently attached is more attractive if the device will be transported.  Durability is questionable; snapping the charger connector back into the stand will likely take its toll in the long run.

If you have your heart set on an all-metal stand, this product fits the bill and is reasonably priced.  I give this product a 3/5 rating and the Bronze Award.

Is This The Next Xbox Spec Sheet?

Microsoft’s next Xbox system specs have allegedly been leaked by website vgleaks.com.

According to the leak, the next Xbox features an AMD-made eight-core CPU running at 1.6GHz and built on x64 architecture. This is coupled with 8GB DDR3 RAM and 32MB of faster embedded SRAM.

The 32MB of ESRAM is significant for its transfer speed, a reported 102 GB per  second. Working in parallel with the DDR3 RAM, the leak claims a peak memory  bandwidth for the GPU of 170 GB per second.

If confirmed, it also marks  a change from the current Xbox 360’s 10MB of eDRAM, which is built into the  system’s GPU. According to the leak, the 32MB of ESRAM will interface with the  GPU but will actually be a separate part, potentially allowing other aspects of  the system to access its memory if needed.

The GPU is said to be a custom  D3D 11.1 processor at 800MHz. It allegedly has 12 shader cores, offering peak  performance of 1.2 trillion floating-point operations per second.

For the  system’s other hardware, it will have a built-in non-removable hard drive and a  6x Blu-ray drive to take 50GB discs. In terms of ports, it will have HDMI out,  USB 3.0, Kinect port, gigabit ethernet, wi-fi and a sata 2.0 port for an  external hard drive. Interestingly, an HDMI in port is also listed, suggesting  possible DVR functionality.

All of the leaked specs are consistent with what developers were saying at CES  when claiming that the PlayStation  4, codenamed Orbis, will be 50 percent more powerful than the next  Xbox.

Recently it was also rumoured that the new Xbox, with the  codename Durango, will feature Skype  at the core of the system, replacing Xbox Live’s voice and video chat  services.

Both consoles are expected to be announced  in March for a late 2013 release.

Sony and Microsoft are yet to  officially confirm any specific details of their future consoles.
