TOMB RAIDER Scaling the Ziggurat video

TR_thumb1_thumb_thumb_thumb_thumb_th

To create the latest video for Tomb Raider, the development team at Crystal Dynamics gathered to discuss their favourite climbing sequences: after much debate, one of the areas from late in the game beat the rest.

This video showcases Lara Croft scaling the Ziggurat, an ancient temple built upon an icy mountainside, which she must traverse in the latter stages of the game in order to reach her final destination. Lara must draw upon all of the climbing skills she’s learned throughout the game in order to conquer this challenge. A foreword from Noah Hughes, Creative Director at Crystal Dynamics, explains why they chose this sequence.

And here is the video:

Wuala, the cloud storage service owned by Wuala, rolled out an app update yesterday on all supported platforms, bringing video streaming to the new LaCie NAS units.  It also fixes bugs, which resolved an intermittent Wuala connection bug with the 5big NAS Pro that I have for a review unit.  Here is the Android change log:

What’s New

What’s in this version:

New features in version 2.6: – Pictures: Zoom in on a picture. – Streaming: Stream your videos or songs directly from the cloud, your LaCie 2big NAS or LaCie 5big NAS PRO. Other changes: – Many bug fixes New Permissions: – “prevent phone from sleeping” and “view network connections”: required for streaming music in the background.

Screenshot_2013-04-04-10-35-26

I have confirmed that this change applied to Android and Windows 7, and the video streaming worked just fine on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 running Android.  I’m also working on an updated review of Wuala, so stay tuned for that; in the meantime, go ahead and download this update if you are running Wuala.

VLC for Windows 8 and Windows RT one step closer

Metro4

VLC for Windows 8 and Windows 8 RT is one step closer to reality.

Metro1

Here is the update from their Kickstarter page:

Technical update
If you followed closely, our main work, in addition to the UI, was to fight and replace the forbidden symbols not allowed on Windows App Store mode.

We’ve been quite efficient at that, working closely with Mingw-w64 project and GCC developers.

The biggest result is that we have now cut down 90% of our symbols, that are forbidden on Metro Mode.

We mostly did this by:

  • replacing our forbidden calls with newer authorized equivalent calls,
  • modifying gcc and Mingw-w64,
  • writing new code in a special library of ours,
  • writing dummy functions,
  • disabling VLC code that would not work on the Metro platform,
  • moving VLC to MSVCRT 11.0, moving all the VLC codebase to UNICODE and WideChars to fit the new requirements.

We did also a lot of minor things to help the integration of libVLC and VLC in this modern platform.

What are we working on now:

We are now mainly working on 2 things:

  • make VLC work with MSVCRT 11.0 without crashing
  • write headers and C/C++ code to access the new fashion of COM APIs in which WinRT is written in.

What we are gonna work just after:

  • ARM, ARM, ARM.
  • WP8

Download Issue 11 of The MagPi Digital Magazine for lovers of the Raspberry Pi

If you have, or are interested in the Raspberry Pi, then you might want to download the new issue of The MagPi digital magazine.

11

This is how the Raspberry Pi guys describe the magazine:

The MagPi, a free online magazine dedicated to the Raspberry Pi, whose first issue was released a few days ago, is a perfect example of that. It’s been put together entirely by volunteers, guided by Ash Stone, Jason “Jaseman” Davies, Meltwater and other names you may recognise from the forums and comments on this site. I was broadly aware they were up to something, but I was amazed at the scope of what they sent me to look at earlier in the week, and I’ve been really, really impressed by the first issue. There are Debian and Puppy guides, articles on computing history, ideas for robotics projects, tutorials in Scratch and Python (with code you can type in yourself, just like in the good old days), features about the Raspberry Pi itself, and other goodies to dig into. I really can’t recommend it enough, and if you haven’t been lucky enough to get to the head of the queue, you don’t need a Raspberry Pi to find it useful (you might actually find the magazine good preparation before yours arrives).

It is a really interesting read – so go download it today, and let us know what you think!

Synology has released a beta for their Surveillance Station software solution, aimed at centralizing remote camera management and licensing processes in enterprise surveillance implementations.  They are also offering a free licensed to the best two beta testers.  Here is the press release:

Synology Releases the Beta for Surveillance Station

Efficient Centralisation, Flexible Deployment and High Interoperability

Milton Keynes, United Kingdom – 2nd April 2013 – Synology UK Ltd today announced the beta availability of Surveillance Station which brings efficiency and flexibility with the Central Management System (CMS) and the support of ONVIF Profile S and Mobotix MxPEG.

“Synology CMS aim at facilitating enterprise-level projects and diminishing administrator’s workload, which demonstrates our dedication to provide users with flexible and high performance digital surveillance solutions,” said Vic Hsu, CEO of Synology Inc.

Synology CMS has been designed for large-scale and high level enterprise surveillance projects. It centralises the management of widely spread recording servers and IP cameras, including setting their user or group credentials and permissions, watching live feeds and playback recordings as well as conducting intelligence video analysis of multiple IP cameras, all on a CMS host.

In addition, Synology CMS filters camera list and recordings by different criteria, offering a quick and unified search experience. It also provides the options of centralising notifications and logs of various recording servers at the CMS host. Besides, IP cameras can be migrated among different recording servers and all camera licenses are centralised on the CMS host, further boosting management efficiency.

Surveillance Station CMS brings surveillance to a new level of integration.

Achieving ONVIF Profile S certification, Surveillance Station interoperates seamlessly with extensive range of IP cameras following this standard, greatly simplifying users’ decision making and management of security and surveillance products.
Also in order to increase compatibility, Surveillance Station now supports Mobotix MxPEG codec that consumes less computing power and storage space, while captures movement in high quality.

The newly released Apps are summarized as follows:

SABnzbdplus: SABnzbd is a cross-platform binary newsreader. It makes downloading from Usenet as simple and streamlined as possible by automating the entire process. All you have to do is add an .nzb file and SABnzbd takes over from there, where it will be automatically downloaded, verified, repaired, extracted and filed away with zero human interaction.

Sick Beard: Sick Beard is a personal video recorder for newsgroup users. It watches for new episodes of your favorite shows and when they are posted it downloads them, sorts and renames them, and optionally generates metadata for them.

CouchPotato: CouchPotato is an automatic NZB and torrent downloader. You can create a “want to watch” list and CouchPotato will search through multiple NZBs & Torrents sites, looking for the best possible match. Once a match is found it will send it to SABnzbd or download the file to a specified directory.

Headphones: Headphones is a SABnzbd add-on that automates your music downloading. It allows you to import all your favorite artists from iTunes, and keep an eye out for any new albums they might be releasing.

Subsonic: Subsonic is a free, web-based media streamer, providing ubiquitous access to the music on your ASUSTOR NAS. You can use it to listen to your own music, share music with friends and even stream to multiple player simultaneously.

First three commentators for the official ASHES CRICKET 2013 announced

0

505 Games recently announced the first three commentators to feature in the official ASHES CRICKET 2013 video game this summer. Lead commentator for Channel 5 in the UK and Australia’s Channel 9, Mark Nicholas, will be joined by ex-England head coach and Sky Sports pundit, David Lloyd and ex-Australian international and Channel 9 commentator Michael Slater.

ashes

Mark Nicholas acts as the lead commentator of the three. Although being an Englishman by birth, and playing for Hampshire for over 17 years, he has since made his name as a television presenter. Nicholas is the anchor of Channel 5 cricket coverage in the UK and also anchor of Channel 9 coverage during the Australian summer cricket season.

David Lloyd, affectionately known as Bumble, brings a wealth of experience and good humour to the game that cricket fans have come to expect from his dulcet tones. Famous for his array of catchphrases, such as “This pitch is as flat as a dodo” and “England have nothing to lose here, apart from this Test match”, Bumble was England coach during the 1997 Ashes series before becoming a Sky Sports commentator in 1999.

Finally, ex-Australian international, Michael Slater completes the commentating line up. Known as ‘Slats’ in the commentary box, he has been commentating on Channel 9 for seven years. Slater played in four Ashes series, scoring 1669 runs including a remarkable seven hundreds. He played 74 Tests for Australia between1993 – 2001.

“Whether listening on the radio or watching on TV, commentary is a key part to the overall experience,” commented Ralph Pitt-Stanley, General Manager for UK & Export at 505 Games. “It was therefore important we faithfully replicated this in ASHES CRICKET 2013 and with Bumble, Nicholas and Slater we have three of the finest and most loved commentators in the game today.”

Further details on ASHES CRICKET 2013 will be revealed exclusively over the coming months via the official website community forums at www.ashescricket2013.com,
