Review: Sniper Elite V2 Remastered

I am a huge fan of the Sniper Elite series; I mean it is bat crap crazy with the kill camera and x-ray kill shots but under the surface lies a very deep and competent shooter that has evolved greatly over the years. The full evolution came in the form of 2017’s Sniper Elite 4 which brought in a much larger world with far more player freedom in how you could complete the mission objectives and a story mode that was fun and rewarding. So, it was with some surprise to learn that Rebellion were going back in time to remaster Sniper Elite V2, albeit a fan favourite, it is still taking players back to how the series was in 2012. It was time to step back into the shoes of Lieutenant Karl Fairburne.

Sniper Elite 2 is set in the final days of World War 2, our hero Lieutenant Karl Fairburne is an American OSS officer and highly skilled sniper who is inserted into Berlin in 1945 with the mission to prevent the Soviets from capturing the Nazi Scientists responsible for designing the V2 rockets, something the US themselves would rather learn from the scientists. The story makes good use of actual historical WW2 operations and even mentions Operation Paperclip which is such a clever way of inserting this story-line into real events without having to alter them to make it work.

What I loved about the Sniper Elite series is that I always considered it the HITMAN of WW2, two game series I held in high esteem back then and still do with the modern games having evolved so much. Fairburne is ultra-deadly, trained to complete the mission no matter the cost and with no help if necessary. He is a very believable character in this world which helps with the immersion which is something this remaster manages to enhance by improving all the visuals for levels and the world. This game does look amazing thanks to the work done to bring the visuals more up to date but it also falls into the trap that many remasters fall into, making it look prettier but not reworking the gameplay.

The sniping physics are some of the best you can find with this series, and even in this early entry to it, the depth in setting up a good kill shot is very satisfying. When all the different systems come together and you can pull off an exceptional sneaky mission by utilising stealth or setting clever traps in order to protect your position it is simply rewarding on a whole new level but you can also just go full arcade run and take out all the enemies around you instead. How you play will determine the score you can get, with more thought out kills scoring more than just ploughing the road with a Thompson machine gun. It was one of the first games that I remember actually using bullet drop as an element to every sniper shot and it certainly elevates trying to get that final kill shot on the target of that mission. Not to mention what it takes to reach and create that opportunity, often having to avoid patrols or strategically taking out guards who could get in the way.

Where this remaster does fall down is where as I said, so many recent ones also fail on, is that the issues the game originally had still remain, despite this version clearly being based on one with all the patches over its life. This is one of the frustrating things about remasters where giving it a shiny new coat of paint and repackaging is seen as good enough. The controls can be clunky at times and there is still an issue with crouching to be stealthier can lead to getting stuck on scenery, which not only happens to you as the player but also to AI characters which is admittedly rather amusing to see whilst zooming through the sniper rifle. The AI can also be very hit and miss to how smart they are where at times they can spot you with the slightest margin of view and other times you could stand there playing charades and they will not notice you at all. The AI can also break its own rules such as when you fire a shot, naturally it can be heard by enemies in close range which will make them actively search for you but if one of their snipers sees you and starting pinging off shots at your location, some enemies wont even consider it something worthy of their interest to look into.

So visually, this game looks really good compared to the original but the issues and linear gameplay make it feel incredibly dated and whilst playing all it made me want to do was reinstall Sniper Elite 4 and play that instead, which I did. This has released with all the DLC included and the new photo mode is a nice new modern feature but unless you are a die-hard fan of the original Sniper Elite V2, I can only say you should check out the more recent game which can be found cheaper than this remaster and is actually currently included in the Xbox Games Pass and is just far more entertaining to play through in just about every way.

Sniper Elite V2 Remastered is another example where the original would have benefited from a full remake rather than just giving it a pretty makeover as it still has playing issues which detract from the playing experience even if they have improved how  the overall game now looks. V2 is still very playable but if you have played Sniper Elite 4 then this will feel incredibly out of date from a gameplay point of view whilst this remaster is slightly redeemed by the co-op mode and the always fun X-ray kill cam views when you pull off a fantastic sniper shot, it still struggles to look anything but dated.

Possibly one to pick up when it lands in the bargain bucket or sales window but sadly Sniper Elite V2 Remaster needed more fine tuning than just a fancy new coat of paint.

Review: A Plague Tale Innocence

I am always a fan of developer teams building up to a release date of their game by posting developer videos that show how the game is coming along as well as sneak peaks at what to expect. Those videos showed just how passionate Asobo Studio are about their debut game and you can see how it translates into the game with some amazing emotive storytelling and world building I have seen so far in 2019 in ‘A Plague Tale: Innocence’. Which is certainly not what I was expecting when first firing the game up and seeing a main menu screen covered in thousands of rats!

Seeing those thousands of rats on the main menu really sets the tone of A Plague Tale: Innocence with the story set in Medieval France as a country at war with England but also at the very beginning of the Black Death epidemic as well. This is a country in crisis and turmoil which is why the opening chapter is so striking. The story opens with Amicia, daughter of a French Lord, accompanying him through the grounds of their estate on a lovely and peaceful day with the sun shining and countryside looking beautiful. The player learns that Amicia is unhappy that she spends so little time with her father due to his obligations to manage his lands as well as being very distant to her mother who is looking after her younger brother Hugo is has a mysterious illness. With very little effort and in a very short amount of time, the player is able to really connect with Amicia as someone who feels quite alone despite being the daughter of a Lord.

Her father then sends her to give a message to her mother that he wants to speak with her, and take Amicia back to her family home where she is welcomed by all the servants who themselves are all hard at work doing their daily tasks. Everything is rather peaceful and lovely and seemingly away from the troubles in the country. I loved how the pace of this opening, which also serves as the tutorial to the game, manages to immerse me right away in the life of Amicia which is vital as her entire world is about to collapse. The Inquisition arrives, charged with finding those who may be afflicted with Plague and to essentially stop the spread by any means necessary but their mission here is different, they are looking for someone, Amicia’s Mother and brother Hugo. As Amicia runs to her brother’s room, we see the soldiers of the inquisition interrogating the same staff that only minutes before were just going about their daily routines and yet now they are being beaten, questioned and then killed by these strange soldiers.

Soon it becomes a race for Amicia to take Hugo and escape the home, in doing so Amicia witnesses the death of her Father, fighting to protect his family and killed by the head of the Inquisition Force Lord, a brutal and uncompromising force of nature who will accomplish his orders by any means necessary. The opening chapters not only establish Amicia as the hero but at the same time makes sure that the player and the audience is fully aware that this guy represents the evil villain of the story. The story telling is just so powerful and beautifully paced in this opening that by the time Amicia and Hugo have managed to escape, as a player you have genuine fear for them going into the world alone, and hunted and not knowing why.

The story itself is broken down into chapters which really deliver the story for the player in just the right pace for storytelling as it enables for true moments along the way for Amicia and Hugo. The chapters never feel too long or too short, delivering the right amount of impact for each level of this dark terrible world. It also allows for some clever rest points as cutscenes take over to tell the story with some beautiful animation and visuals that are sublime at helping to tell the story just as much as the dialogue between characters. As beautiful as it can be it also does not shy away from recreating what a city that has succumb to plague would look like in medieval time and it is very bleak to see. Rotting bodies all covered in flies with homes in villages marked with a giant white X to serve as a warning to others that the Black Death has taken them is just so visually striking on screen after you first spend time with Amicia at her home in the bright and peaceful lands she calls her family home. It is often brave to use such horrific and dark real historical events in a video game to tell a story but here it is so vital to the how this story needs to be told.

Then you have the rats, the thousands of red eyed rats that swarm like a water can flood an area. They are creepy and sinister and they just continue to get under your skin the more they appear on screen with incredible audio effects that especially through a good headset just honestly got to me and added so much atmosphere. I also love how the voice cast absolutely nailed their performances when it came to these critters as there was real tension and fear in their dialogue exchanges when having to deal or avoid the rats, making them a real danger to the characters in the gameplay moments of the game.

That gameplay really comes in the form of stealth with some optional and at other times nonoptional combat. The Stealth is a clever one as for most of the game, Amicia is tied to Hugo so is constantly having to look after him in every situation they encounter. This is accomplished by the need to always hold the hand of Hugo when moving and particularly when having to avoid enemy encounters. This shapes how you handle the stealth sections as you always have the feeling that you as the player are protecting Hugo more then you are protecting Amicia. You are able to command Hugo to wait, and later when other characters join to work with Amicia, but with Hugo if you go too far away from him, he acts like any scared little five year old boy and he will panic and start to call for Amicia which can raise the alarm which means keeping him close is usually the only way to complete a section.

The game also has combat in the form of Amicia’s skill with a sling shot, which can be used to take out enemies. This can feel clumsy at times but thankfully there is a crafting and upgrade system to improve her skills such as making the slingshot stronger so it takes less time to aim at the target and improving the time it takes to throw another shot. I really liked how Alchemy plays a role in that as you progress through the story, Amicia learns or is taught how to craft new ammo types to use such as shots that can start or light fires which is handy when dealing with the rats but also ammo that can put fires out, which can be used strategically later in the game. Upgrades and is capable through collecting materials which are conveniently lying about all over the place and via a workshop table, upgrades can be made to Amicia’s equipment such as improving her slingshot but also the ammo pouch and material pouch. I really enjoyed this aspect to the game and it certainly did help in preparing for the later chapters.

Where this game does fall down for me is just how unforgiving of mistakes it can be, something what in the final chapters of the story can lead to frustration more than enjoyment, with one sequence in particular just yanking me right out of the experience in a bizarre and unwelcome way but will come to that a bit further on. Being seen will often lead to being caught and killed and whilst the game does have a very good checkpoint system as though it knows when a certain section could prove tricky, I did find that there were moments that just seemed unfair such as guards being alerted and staying alerted even though I had successfully broken line of sight and hid. This caused me to actually restart at checkpoints quite a few times just to reset a sequence in order to have a fair crack at it.

The moment that frustrated me the most came in the form of the final boss battle, and did so for many reasons. This game is full of powerful story telling and allowing the player to make it through the game without being too annoying with puzzles that are very straight forward and using a trial and error approach so the player can lean from mistakes. But this boss battle completely broke the immersion for me as it simply broke all the rules of the world, I had spent hours learning to use and follow. The slightest mistake and I was forced to restart the whole fight and even when the battle just became more stupid then challenging, all I could see was that someone along the way suddenly felt that the game needed a big fight despite the combat aspect really being kept to very minimum moments along the way, some of which are completely optional and stealth can be used instead of taking guards out. This battle annoyed the hell out of me and instantly reminded me of the final Joker battle in Arkham Asylum where Rocksteady admitted they just ran out of time to do something really big to finish on and for this game, this battle just felt forced instead of something to battle, defeat and then celebrate to close the game and almost soured my enjoyment of this game.

This is a game that only surprised me on every level and bar one silly boss fight that tainted the experience a little, this is a game and a story that will stick with you long after the credits end. It has so many themes such as family devotion, friendship, sacrifice and how they can be beacons of light in a dark world. With the setting and backdrop of the Black Death, you see how horrible it must have been to have no hope at all of either surviving the plague itself or the fear it created in people who would go to any extreme in order to eradicate it. Amicia is such a wonderful character who has so much pressure and responsibility forced upon her and really grows into a strong and capable woman because of what is at first expected from her as Hugo’s big sister to ultimately wanting to protect her family no matter what.

I came to genuinely care about Hugo and had the instinct to make sure he was nearby even when the game did not call for me to do so, that is how well the game pulled me into the story and I hope it will do for others playing this. A Plague Tale: Innocence has instantly become a highlight and GOTY contender for 2019, the visuals, musical score, voice acting and cast all come together so beautifully that even with that outright stupidly designed final boss encounter that sullied it a little for me, this is a story I really hope gets the recognition it deserves. It has some faults but otherwise this is a story and gaming experience that deserves to be played.

I now really do not like rats!

Vodafone gets ready for 5G to go live 3rd July in the UK and more

Vodafone will switch on its 5G network for both consumers and business customers in seven cities across the UK on 3 July 2019.

While Vodafone’s 5G brings exciting possibilities for businesses in the UK, across the pond, if you’re looking to legally establish your venture in the Empire State, you might need some guidance. For a detailed, step-by-step process on setting up an llc in new york, check out this comprehensive guide. These resources ensure your business is ready for all technological advancements, wherever you are.

In a worldwide first, Vodafone will also offer 5G roaming in the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain over the summer.

Atif Liaquat, retail store manager at Vodafone’s UK headquarters, takes delivery of the first 5G smartphone. He is holding the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G smartphone, which will initially be available exclusively from Vodafone online and in store from 23 May 2019

The UK is leading the way in adopting 5G, with Vodafone the first operator to name an official switch-on date. Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool and London will be among the first cities in the world to receive 5G – the new super-fast, highly responsive mobile technology. Birkenhead, Blackpool, Bournemouth, Guildford, Newbury, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Reading, Southampton, Stoke-on-Trent, Warrington and Wolverhampton will follow later this year.

Vodafone will price 5G the same as 4G for both consumers and business customers. A choice of 5G smartphones will be available to buy online or in Vodafone stores over the summer. The first smartphone goes on sale next week. Vodafone will also offer a 5G router for use in the home and office to give customers without a fixed line connection high-speed broadband access. It is also ideal for those customers replacing their home or business broadband; needing a second connection; or who require instant Internet access at an outdoor event.

Vodafone UK CEO Nick Jeffery said: “We started our 5G journey more than three years ago. We led the way in setting 5G standards to ensure phones and networks work well together. We upgraded our masts to be able to take 5G without disruption. And we were the first UK company to test 5G over our all-fibre core fixed and mobile network.

“This is important. It means we can today announce the largest launch of 5G in the UK and be the first to announce 5G roaming. It means that UK businesses can lead the world in adopting 5G to boost productivity and attract investment. It means consumers can get the fastest mobile speeds ever, and it means that our public sector will be able to adopt new services to improve healthcare, social services and housing.”

Vodafone is also creating digital innovation and incubator centres across the UK. It will soon open a technology centre at MediaCity, Salford, Greater Manchester, and today is unveiling plans for a major new 5G facility at the Ricoh Arena – home of Wasps rugby and netball clubs.
Under the new sponsorship and technology deal with Wasps, Vodafone will equip the rugby stadium and netball centre with the latest 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) technology. This will give fans the best-connected sporting seats in the country. The venues will be open to businesses and start-ups.
Vodafone was the first to demonstrate a 5G holographic call last year. We have also brought 5G to key commuter locations. Offering speeds over 5G up to ten times faster than 4G, we’ve shown commuters at busy airports and railway stations that they can download TV box sets or movies in a matter of seconds before they embark on their journey.
5G will also ensure faster data speeds for customers in congested areas, such as busy shopping centres, sporting events or music concerts. Vodafone is already the best network in London and now, with the extra capacity offered by 5G, consumers and businesses in the capital can expect even greater reliability in busy areas.
Through our sponsorship of ESL, the world’s largest esports company, we will also bring 5G to gamers so they can get 4K resolution on their consoles and respond to their opponents’ moves instantly.
Customers can choose from several new, 5G compatible devices ahead of our network switch-on. These include:
• the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G smartphone, which will initially be available exclusively from Vodafone online and in-store from 23 May 2019;
• the Samsung S10 5G and Huawei Mate 20 X (5G), which will be available for pre-order later this month; and
• the Huawei Mate X (5G) and an exclusive 5G home router, called the 5G Gigacube, which will launch this summer.
The new price plans will be unveiled next week to coincide with the availability of the first handset. Handsets can initially be used over 4G and will be able to use 5G when the network is switched on and all manufacturer software updates are completed.

Review: Huawei P30 Lite, Lite in name but is it Lite in nature?

When the Huawei P30 Lite, introduced in April 2019 and the successor to the P20 Lite, is the little brother of the Huawei P30 and the P30 Pro.

The P30 Lite has a 6.15-inch FullView screen with the Huawei Dewdrop Notch, an inconspicuous notch in which the front camera. With an aspect ratio of 19.3:9 the FullView screen offers a broader perspective, wrapped in a sleek shape.

With 4 GB of RAM and an octa-core Kirin 710 processor run most apps. The smartphone has 128 GB storage and is equipped with a sturdy 3340 mAh battery and Quick Charge. Thanks to AI is the P30 lite also extra careful with his energy, allowing the phone nice long life.

18w supercharger, USC type C cable and headphone and a sim tool

The Huawei P30 lite has a slim 3D-curved design and is available in three iconic colours inspired by nature: Peacock Blue, Pearl White and Midnight Black (£329.99) available from Huawei and Carphone Warehouse and Amazon UK

Cameras
On the back is the Huawei P30 lite equipped with a high-definition 48-megapixel (f/1.8) wide angle lens, an 8MP ultra wide-angle lens (f/2.4) and a 2MP bokeh lens. This allows the P30 lite detailed photos, 120-degree wide angle pictures and portraits with beautiful bokeh effects. The P30 lite also has the handheld Super Night mode, that AI-image stabilization. This is in low light photography improved by combining multiple frames and long exposures, so photos beautiful colours and brightness. Because the main camera has a 48-megapixel resolution can zoom in two times without loss of quality. At the front, you’ll find a 24-Megapixel selfie camera.

Android 9 (or Android 9 Pie) offers a number of improvements over the previous versions. Your apps can still run next to each other. Two apps on smartphones and tablets you can run next to each other in split screen mode. Google has once again paid great attention to the notifications in Android Pie. Whatsapp for example now has the ability to view images and stickers to show in the notifications of the messages. Also, you can now all your active discussions in the notification screen and you get the possibilities for quick responses. Useful is the new app actions.

Cons

  • You get better results from the 12MP option than the 48MP
  • Oversaturates reds and greens at times
  • Can oversharpen shots at times
  • Zoom isn’t the best

The P30 Lite has a 3,340mAh battery inside its glass body, which is a little small, truth be told. But the Kirin 710 chipset is a power efficient beast, and we never really had issues when it comes to battery longevity during our time with the P30 Lite.

Huawei’s P30 Lite slots neatly into the mid-range category with its £329 price point. While it’s not as fast as some of its rivals in the same category, the smartphone’s triple cameras are good enough for people looking to dabble in mobile photography.

We like the inclusion of the 3.5mm jack, as well as the USB Type-C port and roomy 128GB storage, things that usually aren’t present in the offerings of other brands in the same price segment.

New fashion collection is co-created using the AI from the HUAWEI P30 series

Huawei has today launched “Fashion Flair”, a new smartphone based approach to fashion design that combines the power of smartphone Artificial Intelligence (AI) with creative human flair to generate unique fashion designs of any style.

To support the launch of “Fashion Flair”, Huawei partnered with Anna Yang, Creative Director and founder of fashion label ANNAKIKI, to undertake and complete the world’s first 20 piece fashion collection. The collection was unveiled at the iconic Superstudio+ in Milan on 9th May 2019.

“At Huawei we aspire to combine technology with human expertise, allowing us to go beyond what is humanly possible, but keep the authenticity that the human eye can bring.” states Isabella Lazzini, Marketing & Retail Director Huawei CBG Italia. “Artistic expression is built on the inspiration that creators take from the trends they see around them and experiences that they have built up over many years. With Fashion Flair, we’ve used AI to give fashion designers an alternative starting point for developing their outfits, all built on real trends and experiences. “Fashion Flair” designs produced by our AI are designed to be the building blocks for the next creative breakthrough in fashion.”

To create the “Fashion Flair” collection, Huawei developed an original “Fashion Flair” app which was trained by inputting tens of thousands of iconic fashion images from the last 100 years into the platform, along with a specific set of ANNAKIKI collection images.

By applying a number of filters in the app by the designer, the AI in the HUAWEI P30 and HUAWEI P30 PRO created a proposal for an initial outfit, which was then developed into a finished garment by Anna Yang. The app, once all images have been processed, has the ability to create infinite outfit proposals presenting designers with endless creative possibilities.

The work of Anna Yang, renowned for the creative flair of her garments, has been showcased at London, Paris and Milan Fashion Weeks, and been worn by celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Noah Cyrus and Sfera & Basta.
“For this project, I experimented with something that I had never done before, taking inspiration from a smartphone’s AI as the starting point of my designs.” states Anna Yang, Creative Director of ANNAKIKI. “The powerful AI in the HUAWEI P30 Pro became an ever-present source of inspiration and has made it possible for me to design clothes in a different way. Co-creation with technology has been extremely stimulating and I am certain that, in the future, technology will play a distinctive role in the fashion world, opening up completely new scenarios that today we can only imagine”.

To celebrate the first “Fashion Flair” collection, Anna Yang chose to use the colour range of the HUAWEI P30 Series products, in combination with the outputs of the AI app. The four most significant garments in the collection reflects the shimmering colours of the latest Huawei products: Amber Sunrise, Breathing Crystal, Aurora and Black.

The final outfits in the ANNAKIKI for Huawei collection are the expression of a strong personality, characterised by energetic vitality, femininity, self-confidence and determination.
“Humanly Possible is about using Artificial Intelligence alongside human talent to take creativity beyond expectations. Over the past year, we have demonstrated the benefits that this approach can bring to a wide variety of industries, often with AI being used as a tool for creatives to lean on for inspiration,” states Walter Ji, President, Western Europe, Consumer Business Group, Huawei. “Fashion Flair is the next step in our Humanly Possible journey and is one of the many ways that Huawei is bringing meaningful technology to every person around the world.”
“Fashion Flair” is an experimental project that demonstrates how technology can influence the creative process. The project represents a new chapter of Huawei’s “Humanly Possible”, a thrilling narration in which the desires, dreams and needs of human beings are the focal point, and technology acts as an enabling element.

The online partner or this project is LUISAVIAROMA.COM, one of the leading luxury fashion destinations. The entire collection can be bought exclusively online at LuisaViaRoma online store from Thursday, May 9th.

First infomation on the story of the Honor 20 Series launching this month

New information on the new HONOR series that’s set to reveal the world’s first Dynamic Holographic design in the upcoming flagship HONOR 20 Series. With the flagship series symbolizes another milestone in the evolution of HONOR, as the first smartphone series that is comprised of HONOR 20, HONOR 20 PRO, and HONOR 20 Lite.

HONOR 20 Series will be unveiled at the global launch event in London on 21st May for the newest member of HONOR’s renowned N-Series, lauded for its superior design and photography capability. The launch will invite users to “Capture Wonder” with its professional-grade camera and the wondrous visual effect of the Dynamic Holographic design – a masterpiece crafted through the seamless merge of artistic consideration and cutting-edge Triple 3D Mesh technology.

The Wonder of Cutting-Edge Dynamic Holographic Design
As worldwide brands focus on pushing the limits of smartphone functionality, HONOR is on a quest to combine functionality and pure aesthetics. The HONOR 20 redesigns the user experience by becoming the first smartphone in HONOR’s history to introduce a multi-dimensional, Dynamic Holographic glassback.

The Dynamic Holographic glassback was made in a two-staged process made possible by HONOR’s industry-first Triple 3D Mesh technology. The depth layer is created using a precise technique. It is embedded with millions of miniature prisms that resemble pieces of diamonds.
Upon completion of this intricate process, the designers combine it with two other surfaces: the first layer is the glass layer, while the second layer is coated in the hue of upcoming HONOR 20 colours to be revealed at the launch event on May 21. The outcome is a depth-inducing optical effect that makes the HONOR 20 Series stand out from its predecessors.

The Wonder of HONOR’s “Always Better” Design Ethos
“Our design ethos ‘Always Better’ can be found in everything we create. HONOR’s latest Triple 3D Mesh technology is a piece of state-of-the-art craftsmanship. Unveiled for HONOR 20 Series, this industry-first involves a highly precise and complex assembly process. For every 100 back covers, only 20 meet our stringent standards. Despite the tremendous challenge this presents, HONOR is still committed to creating a glassback using this technique. We are driven to offer the very best to our customers,” said George Zhao, President of HONOR.
HONOR is known for leading the revolution of glassback design with pioneering technology, starting with the HONOR 8 2.5D glassback and the HONOR 9 in an immersive 3D curved design. The HONOR 10 then introduced the Aurora design – an iridescent colour gradient that dazzled the world. With the HONOR 20 Series, HONOR is ready to push their engineering effort to the limit of light play and innovative design-thinking to create its world-first Dynamic Holographic design, along with HONOR’s signature design approach to colours.

The Wonder of User-Centric Design and Features

HONOR’s “Always Better” design philosophy drives the brand to go beyond the textural and colour design of the Dynamic Holographic glassback.

HONOR 20 Series boasts a 6.26″ all-view display with a 91.6% screen-to-body ratio. Paired with a 4.5mm in-screen camera, the all-view display allows an even more enthralling visual experience without compromising on aesthetics.

Unlike its predecessors, the edges have been smoothed for a sleek design. This involves the careful positioning of the fingerprint sensor on the right side of its aluminium frame to complement the natural placement of fingers when one picks up a phone.

The anti-fingerprint surface ensures that the phone looks good all the time. Not only does the curved screen provide a better hand grip, but it also leverages all three dimensions of the phone: length, width, and height to improve the overall viewing experience.

The asymmetrical “L-shaped” positioning of the camera lenses improves the technological prowess of the HONOR 20 because it allows for a bigger battery size while maintaining the aesthetic of the Dynamic Holographic glassback.

The HONOR 20 Series will capture wonders at the launch event and reveal many more camera capabilities and colour designs on Tuesday 21st May in London.

Welcome to the Huawei P Smart Z 2019 with a popup camera

Hauwei today announced the launch of the HUAWEI P Smart Z 2019, a new bezel-less phone featuring a pop-up camera and Full HD display.

The HUAWEI P Smart Z 2019 was designed with students and young professionals in mind, delivering a combination of advanced technology and revolutionary design, in a great value package. Equipped with the efficient Kirin 710F chipset and intelligent EMUI 9 operating system, the HUAWEI P Smart Z 2019 brings features that range from the exhilarating to the functional, including AI-supported photography, a long battery life, high-end graphics, and a noteworthy design.

An Eye-Opening 6.59-inch FullView Display

Whilst many smartphones on the market today claim to feature a “bezel-less display”, they actually incorporate perforated or notched screens, undermining the principle of a seamless surface. The HUAWEI P Smart Z 2019 has taken a bold leap forward with design innovation, introducing a screen entirely free of holes, notches, or sliders, for an authentic full screen effect.

By relocating the front camera, earpiece, and ambient light sensor, the HUAWEI P Smart Z 2019 achieves a sleek 19.5:9 screen aspect ratio, which accounts for a staggering 91% of the smartphone’s body (AA/TP, Huawei lab data), making it perfect for streaming videos or gaming.

With a 2340 x 1080 Full HD display and a jam-packed pixel density of 391 PPI, the HUAWEI P Smart Z 2019 screen appears to work like a magnifying glass, conveying detail on a minute scale. The wide colour gamut of 85% results in a rich and vibrant visual experience, providing the magnified display with bold textures and vivid features.

What’s more, the HUAWEI P Smart Z 2019 is equipped with an advanced eye comfort mode, filtering out harmful blue light to prevent eye strain and fatigue. This function has passed rigorous tests for photo-biological safety and is certified by TÜV Rheinland.

Innovative Pop-Up Camera Lens

The higher screen-to-body ratio on the HUAWEIP Smart Z 2019 comes courtesy of an innovative 16MP pop-up camera. During normal use, the camera is hidden within the phone body. When the front camera is activated, for instance when taking selfies, it automatically emerges and hovers over the screen. This futuristic design elegantly solves the issue of front camera placement, resulting in the expansion of the screen’s range of view in the process.

The pop-up lens is propelled by a motor and lifting device that were developed from scratch. It takes only a second for the camera to emerge or retract, making it extremely functional and easy to use.

Huawei has implemented strict and thorough reliability testing, to ensure that the front lens will continue to function smoothly, even after years of heavy use. The pop-up lens can withstand the strain of 100,000 repetitions without being damaged, and the front side can bear the direct force of a 12kg object. The smartphone is also endowed with an intelligent drop protection function, which automatically detects when it is in free fall and retracts the lens to the maximum extent possible to mitigate the effect of the drop.

AI-Enhanced Photography

The HUAWEI P Smart Z 2019 AI-enhanced front camera can automatically identify eight common photography scenes, including blue skies, greenery, indoor settings and snowy landscapes. The 1.0µm pixels and F/2.2 aperture flawlessly adjust the lighting and background in portrait shots, for a natural looking effect.

The front camera also features enhanced AI backlight imagery technology, an AI natural facial beautification algorithm, and 3D portrait lighting effects, which can be calibrated according to the setting and user characteristics, providing the subtlety of professional studio lighting.

The HUAWEI P Smart Z 2019 is equipped with a 16MP + 2MP double rear camera system. The 16MP main camera utilises a 6P (six-lens plastic array) design, so users can capture crystal-clear images with outstanding levels of detail and powerful light intake, for improved resolution and contrasts. The F/1.8 aperture on the 16MP camera takes in 50 percent more light than the F/2.2 aperture more commonly seen, with low noise and fast focusing.

What’s more, the 8MP sensor can take 120° wide-angle shots, transforming vast landscapes or cluttered skylines into breathtaking images. The 2MP sensor coordinates with the primary camera to generate a lifelike depth of field in the photo, enabling SLR-quality images, whilst tools such as Night Mode and 480 FPS super slow-motion videos, bring a range of professional photography features to this affordable device.

Powerful, Efficient and Dependable

The HUAWEI P Smart Z 2019 is equipped with the 12nm process Kirin 710F chipset, with eight-core architecture, for high performance and maximum power efficiency. Compared with the previous-generation chipset, single-thread CPU performance is 75% higher, multi-thread performance is 68% higher and GPU energy efficiency is doubled. As a result, the smartphone’s overall performance is 30 percent higher, while energy consumption is actually 30 percent lower.

The 4,000 mAh large-capacity battery, often found in flagship devices, works seamlessly with the Kirin 710F chipset to provide optimal power efficiency, worthy of a smartphone with diverse, and power-intensive features. Plus, the EMUI 9 operating system features cutting-edge F2FS 2.0 and EROFS technologies which increase available space, to keep the device running for an extended period of time without the slightest lag.

Availability

The HUAWEI P Smart Z 2019 will be available to buy in the UK from June in Green and Black from retailers including Amazon and Argos. The P Smart Z will be available exclusively at Argos in Emerald Green and Midnight Black for £249.

Huawei Opens Applications for Android Q Beta Testers for Mate 20 Pro

During Google I/O 2019, Huawei Consumer Business Group (BG) announced a global Android Q Developer Recruitment drive for beta testers, running now through June 30. Developers are invited to try out the latest Android test build on HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro and contribute to optimising and improving device compatibility of Android Q.

Interested developers may submit their applications on Huawei’s Friendly User Test (FUT) app with a HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro device. Once registered, developers may download the beta software via Huawei OTA, and are encouraged to submit feedback to Huawei throughout the test period.

Announced May 7 at Google I/O 2019, Android Q is the tenth major version of the popular smartphone platform. Designed with stronger protection for user privacy, the latest Android version introduces new security mechanisms and offers more granular controls over how data is shared between the operating system and apps.

Android Q imposes new restrictions on file access to prevent cross-app data collection. In addition, apps now require special permission to gainaccess to non-resettable device identifiers. Android Q-based devices also transmit randomised MAC addresses by default. Most apps that are not in focus also lose access to users’ clipboards on Android Q, eliminating another avenue for potential leakage of sensitive data.

The update adds features that accommodate user demands for new entertainment experiences and novel use cases enabled by new device form factors such as foldables. It also natively supports a 5G framework in anticipation of the upcoming 5G-enabled smart devices slated to arrive later this year.

During the presentation, the HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro was listed as one of the initial devices to support the Android Q Beta. Following the beta testing period, the full HUAWEI Mate 20 Series will also be among the first to receive the new Android version once it is released.

In recent years, Huawei has been working closely with Google to improve the Android platform, sharing its experience in security and performance optimisation from developing EMUI with Google for the benefit of all players in the industry. The feedback Huawei receives from developers participating in the Android Q beta test will also be relayed to Google to accelerate the development of the software.

Review: Snooker 19

Snooker is one of those sports that is loved by dedicated fans but overlooked in favour of the more pub friendly Pool table by most people. In fact, over the years, whenever I have had to explain the difference between Call of Duty and Battlefield series, I always say that Battlefield is the Snooker to CoD’s Pool. It is a sport I used to play with my dad and into my early 20s and I still have my official John Parrot Snooker Cue in a case somewhere…gathering dust! But over the years I have really enjoyed playing the video game version of Snooker which for me began back in my Amiga days with the exceptional Jimmy White’s Whirlwind Snooker and it became my benchmark for snooker simulator games from that moment. Now it is also hard to believe that it has been almost ten years since an officially licensed Snooker game was released, especially on console but now we have Snooker 19. Only question is can it hit a 147 or accidentally pots the white instead?

I was fortunate enough to discover this game during my time at EGX Rezzed back in early April in the ID@Xbox area, it was tucked away in the corner amongst some of the best indie games coming out this year, and it was interesting to see who was gravitating around its demo stand, mostly dads really. I patiently waited my turn and right away I was taken back by how visually stunning this game looks from the ball physics and animation to just the recreation of tournament quality table and players, it really could be easily mistaken for a televised match at times. The presentation and attention to detail really is quite remarkable and I certainly tip my hat to Ripstone and Lab42.

Snooker 19 has a good deal of modes for players to enjoy from the standard Exhibition matches and online Multiplayer that you would expect, but what did come as a nice surprise and something real die-hard fans of the sport will appreciate, is that it actually has two types of Career Mode. The first is the 2019/20 season where you can select anyone of the 128 already Pro players which is pretty much making this the FIFA of Snooker games already with that size of a roster. The second is a really nice touch in my opinion, and that is the option to instead, pick one of the many rising stars of the Snooker professional world and attempt to take them to the big leagues.

The only real downside to both Career Modes is that there is currently no option to create your own snooker player, which would have been so much fun to create your own and guide them through the rising star mode and then into the pro player mode. To be fair to this lack of option in the game, the roster of players you can play as is pretty huge, but it still is a shame not to have a create a player option.

When I played the short demo at EGX Rezzed, the one concern I had was the gameplay via controller. Snooker 19 does a solid job of making what would normally be extremely straight forward with a mouse and keyboard system, into something very user friendly for controller although it will take some time to get used to. There is a real effort to make playing Snooker 19 feel as much like actual televised Snooker as possible, which means the top down view of a TV broadcast is the default view as you work to set up the initial shot. It is only when you move into the second stage taking the shot, does the game move your view to behind the ball, something Snooker games of yester year would do from the off. It features a good few aim assist options for players of all skill types so lining up a shot and knowing there the cue ball is likely to go is a great help as is the ability to add spin to a shot and how much power to use. It does take some time to adjust too, which is where a practice mode would really come in handy but sadly this is not included in the game.

Where the game falls down a little for me comes in the form of the opponent player’s AI, which the developers have been pretty vocal about putting across that each player in the game is a true representation of their real-life counterparts in terms of their playing style and skill. This can translate in the game as a very sudden god like performance by your opponent, even on easy difficulty which can have you the player just sitting and watching as the AI player knocks out amazing high break scores or pulling off insanely accurate ‘snookers’. For me this was rather humiliating as I would often watch a frame play out as if I was actually just a bystander watching the match on telly. This led to some very non fun, painfully slow and embarrassing matches which would sadly, cause me to have to quit the match in order to try again and hope the gaming gods took some mercy on me. This did not happen all the time and was very much dependant on which player I was facing but even after many years of suffering the overpowered nonsense of super star FIFA rated teams online, it just felt more personal experiencing it in a nice game of Snooker.

Snooker 19 is very much a simulation of the sport with very little arcade feel to it, this really makes this a great game for the devoted Snooker fan and less of a must play for any casual fans out there. It recreates the television experience as much as a video game can but the animation and look of some of the roster of professional players can be less than realistic, sometimes to comedic results. The game would have benefited from a dedicated practice room and it would have been more immersive if you could create your own snooker player to challenge the real players on the impressively large roster.

But I admire what it tries to do and having the official licensed tournaments and players gives it real authenticity, helped by the fact there is no other Snooker game to rival it, this will deliver the Snooker gaming experience you would want if you are a dedicated fan of the sport.

Review: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy

Capcom’s Ace Attorney franchise might not be as popular as other Capcom franchises, but it’s been around since 2001 when the first game saw a Japan only release on the Game Boy Advance. The original trilogy has been released on the Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Wii and mobile devices in the West. Now Capcom has decided to release it yet again on the current generation of consoles and PC as the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy.
