Review: REPLIKATOR

REPLIKATOR is a procedurally generated sci-fi title that’ll make you pull your hair out. Thanks to its cruel creatures and lashings of traps, you will die repeatedly. Furthermore, this testing experience will make you yelp as you throw caution to the wind and try to bum-rush each stage. Consequently, if you lose patience and your head, you are guaranteed to fail. However, every death gives you the opportunity to come back stronger. As such, though you may fail, there is always a silver lining.

Developed by R-Games and Meridian4 and published by Ratalaika Games, this is a top-down sci-fi shooter. What’s more, it has rogue-like elements. Therefore, it is undeniably tough, and death is horribly unfair. Yet, the excruciatingly cruel gameplay generates a sense of reward whenever there is a fleeting moment of success.

REPLIKATOR demands that you grab your ammo and keep shooting.
Grab the energy and keep shooting.

REPLIKATOR tells a worryingly convincing tale.

I’d hardly call modern living a futuristic haven. However, there are daily reports of the negative impact that AI is having on our lives. Whether it is taking over our jobs, or we experience a “Skynet” overlord, it is pretty terrifying. Unfortunately, REPLIKATOR delivers a worryingly convincing version of events.

You control a hero who must outrun and destroy an all-seeing and all-powerful AI. This soulless invention is hell-bent on destroying humanity. Yet, for all its negatives, there are some minor positives. The futuristic technology allows you to be reborn anytime you die. Moreover, it can generate new weapons, perks, and implants to help you on your way. However, there is the obvious side effect of death to worry about, but why let that stop you from having a good time?

Procedurally generated gameplay.

I adore a procedurally generated world. The continual mystery is a wonderful element that keeps me coming back for more. If you then combine this with the rogue-like genre, you have a tough but intriguing recipe that will be tantalising for fans of the genre. Alongside this, the more you play, the easier things become.

Every time you die, or you defeat a main boss, you return to the central space station. Here, you may spend your resources to improve the ship and your hero. Moreover, you may swap between 4 characters to find the perfect match for your play style. On top of this, you can select perks, unlock new gear, and arm yourself with special items. As such, the more time you invest, the better your hero becomes.

A green and slimy blob wants to kill you.
That looks like it’ll kick your ass.

Exploring an unknown world.

The procedurally generated map is an excellent mechanic. No matter how many times I played the game, I never knew what to expect. Furthermore, the large roster of monsters and aliens will keep you on your toes. Alongside this, there are spikes to avoid, barrels to destroy, and acid-filled aliens to evade. As such, this isn’t a mindless shooter. Instead, you must plan which weapon to use and how you wish to stay alive.

Each level is set on a space station. The labyrinthine world is easy to navigate thanks to the excellent map. However, a fog of war shrouds each stage into a mysterious experience. As you open each door, you’ll encounter plenty of risky moments. Yet, by using the right weapons and perks, you’ll annihilate everything in front of you.

The aim of each stage is simple. Clear the rooms, gather as much ammo, health, and cubes as you can carry, and find the terminal key. With this in hand, you may exit the stage and move on to the next endeavour. Yet, this is easier said than done as large monsters stand between you and victory.

REPLIKATOR is a pixelated masterpiece.

I love retro games! Accordingly, a pixelated masterpiece will always float my boat. Thanks to the basic but attractive graphics, this simple affair is great to look at. Additionally, each of your foes has a unique finish, and the gameplay is wonderfully smooth. On top of this, the UI is easy to navigate, and the animation is rudimentary but perfectly serviceable.

A fast-paced and dramatic game needs a strong soundtrack. Thankfully, REPLIKATOR is unbelievably hard-hitting. The synth soundtrack is complemented by futuristic sound effects. Furthermore, every weapon has a unique noise and the explosions are off the chart. Subsequently, this loud game keeps you on your toes at all times.

Don't forget to upgrade your character.
Make sure to upgrade your character.

Excellent controls.

If you struggle with top-down shooters, you may be worried about playing this. Well, worry not as the developers are kind people. They have incorporated some excellent accessibility options to make this easier to play. Moreover, a brilliant tutorial and 3 difficulty settings help to level the playing field. On top of this, once you nail the fundamentals, you’ll slay every creature and alien you encounter.

Thanks to the rogue-like elements, REPLIKATOR is addictive and tough to put down. Alongside this, there are loads of blueprints to find, masses of creatures to destroy, and a range of big bosses to take down. Additionally, you can select from 4 characters with individual strengths and weaknesses. As such, there is plenty to see and do and loads of reasons to return.

REPLIKATOR is an excellent indie title.

Ratalaika Games publishes some of the quickest and easiest games you’ll ever see. However, REPLIKATOR isn’t one of them. This tough title will push you to your limits. Moreover, the procedurally generated mechanics, hidden rooms, and mountains of collectables will keep you coming back for more. My only complaint is that the tough nature of the action can be disheartening, even if death is a blessing in disguise. Despite my complaints, I still loved it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you stop the AI from destroying humanity? Grab a weapon, pick up each power up, and slay everything that moves.

Backgammon Basics: An Introduction to the Game

0

The game of Backgammon has been a beloved pastime for thousands of years, captivating players with its unique blend of strategy, chance, and competitive play. The game’s simplicity and depth have endured across generations, making it as appealing today as it was in ancient times. If you’ve ever wondered how to play Backgammon, this guide will introduce you to the basic rules and strategies, as well as the resources you’ll need to start playing.

Equipment

Before you can play Backgammon, you’ll need a Backgammon set or, for a more convenient alternative, play the game online. If you choose to purchase a set, it will include a board divided into four quadrants, each with six triangular points or pips, totaling 24 points. The board also features a central divider called the bar. Each player begins with fifteen checkers in their color, two dice, a dice cup, and a doubling cube, used to increase the stakes of the game.

The Game Board

img

Understanding the game board is fundamental to learning Backgammon. The points are numbered starting from 24 in your opponent’s home board and ending at 1 in your own home board. Players move their checkers in opposite directions, following a horseshoe path around the board. The ultimate goal of the game is to move all your checkers to your home board, then remove them entirely in a process called bearing off.

Rolling and Moving

Each turn begins with a roll of the dice, which determines how many points a player can move their checkers. The checkers always move forward toward the player’s home board. Players can choose to move one checker twice or two checkers separately, depending on the dice roll. An essential rule to remember is that a checker can only land on an open point—a point not occupied by two or more opposing checkers.

Hitting and Entering

If a checker lands on a point occupied by a single opposing checker (a blot), it’s hit and moved to the bar. The player whose checker was hit must re-enter that checker onto their opponent’s home board before they can move any other pieces.

Bearing Off

Once all players’ checkers are in their home board, they can start bearing off or removing their checkers from the board. This is done by rolling a number that corresponds to a point where a checker resides. However, if no checkers can bear off according to the rolled number, the player must make a legal move using a checker on a higher-numbered point.

Doubling

A unique aspect of Backgammon is the doubling cube. A player can propose to double the stakes at any point in the game before their roll. The opponent can either accept and continue playing with doubled stakes or resign and lose the match. Ownership of the doubling cube switches with each accepted proposal, allowing for multiple redoubles and increasing stakes.

Winning the Game

Winning in Backgammon can occur in several ways. If a player has removed all their checkers and their opponent has removed at least one, the player wins the current stake. If the opponent hasn’t removed any checkers, they lose a gammon, and the stakes are doubled. If the opponent still has one or more checkers on the bar or in the opponent’s home board, they lose Backgammon and triple the current stakes.

Exploring More Board Games

img

If you enjoy Backgammon and wish to explore similar games, there’s a wealth of strategic board games available. Traditional board games like Chess, Go, or Checkers also involve strategic play and head-to-head competition. Exploring these alternatives can add variety to your gaming experience and broaden your strategic understanding.

Overall, Backgammon is a timeless game of strategy and chance, rich in history and still vibrant today. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a newcomer, the game offers endless fascination. Understanding the basic rules is just the beginning; with each game, you’ll uncover new layers of strategy and complexity. So gather your equipment and prepare for a journey into the world of Backgammon—a game that has enthralled players for millennia and continues to do so today. Happy gaming!

Review – Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengance of the Slayer

Yeah, that’s the full title. I don’t know what ‘Terminal Aftermath’ means either. For brevity’s sake, we’ll just call it Slayers X. It began back in the distant year of 1998, scribbled down in a high schooler’s notebook, and has now been released onto the information super highway. That means Slayers X has technically been in development for twenty four years. Ten years longer than Duke Nukem Forever. Big Z Studios Inc. should get on the phone to Guinness. Or not, as the developer, ‘Zane’, is a fictional character from the game Hypnospace Outlaw. Ah well.

Fake or not, this lengthy development period makes Slayers X feel like something of a time capsule. It encapsulates the more ridiculous parts of the late nineties and early 2000s. Paired with that is a respect for shooters of the time and Slayers X slots into the ‘Boomer Shooter‘ genre nicely. Though, given the year it supposedly started development, I guess it would be more of a ‘Millennial Shooter’.

Slayers X - Shooting Enemies At An Amusement Park

Smells Like Slayer Spirit

Slayers X opens with a scene straight out of a music video. Our hero, Zane, trains with his master while Zane’s girlfriend talks into a phone with a voice that indicates she’s dead inside. The cutscene is deliberately apeing that 90s art style, where 3D was fashionable but the tech wasn’t there to support it. So everyone looks like pixelated plasticine. It’s great. Then Zane’s apartment gets blown up, along with his mother. Which is less great. It does explain the aforementioned ‘vengance’ though.

Zane’s wrath is directed at the ‘Psykos’, a needle-loving group of purple jerks. Killing them is super entertaining. We begin with dual pistols, a personal favourite of mine, but steadily move through the usual suspects, ending with the rocket launcher. With the possible exception of the pistols, the weapons all sound and feel great. What’s more, enemies react appropriately to being hit. Pair it with a soundtrack that ramps up when enemies appear and you’ve got an exciting time. Slayers X knows how to get the blood pumping.

It also has some clever spins on the usual weapon line-up. The shotgun, for example, was a favourite of mine. Rather than firing boring old shells, it fires out broken glass. Leaving aside how painful it would be to reload, this is a genius idea. Glass is gathered by breaking windows, so as long as you’re near a building, you still have ammo. That saved my bacon a few times. The other big trick up Slayers X‘s sleeve is ‘Hack Blood’, which is a magical green force than you can fire out of the impractically designed S-Blade. Oh yeah, we’re a hacker as well because of course we are.

Slayers X - An Example Of A Cutscene

Slaying In The Name

In case you forgot, this game began as scribblings in a fictional sixteen year-old’s notebook. That brings us neatly on to the humour. I’d say that Slayers X is funny, but there are a number of asterisks attached to that. The funniest parts for me were the abrupt sentences (for example, Zane’s mum is pronounced dead in a sudden news report) and the childish taunts from Zane himself. It feels like a teenager on voice chat. The second half of the game descends into a stream of poop jokes, though. Fitting for the teenage vibe, but if your tastes aren’t scatalogical, then it does tend to grate a wee bit. Still, when it got away from that, it did give me a good few chuckles.

The poop spills over into the combat too. A major enemy type is a big poop that spits corn. Edmund McMillen would be proud. The enemy variety is actually pretty good. Basic purple guys with guns give way to giggling clown heads and werewolf clones of your late girlfriend. There’s even a big floating lad that looks like a Cacodemon decided to accessorise. It’s nice, but the variety does highlight how dull the scenery looks in comparison. The occasional grass areas are a standout but most of the time it’s gunmetal grey or depressing brown. It’s a curse of the chosen artstyle, I think.

Same with everything looking very boxy. I can’t mark it down too much as that’s what the genre demands but it’s a shame the boat wasn’t pushed out a bit more. In fact, a few old issues were trapped in this time capsule. There are occasional platforming sections, for example, which feel clunky and frustrating. The final boss is a particular thorn in the side for this. What’s more, the AI is pretty thick. You have to be right next to them for them to agro, even if you’ve just shot a handful of glass into their mate’s face. Given the high range of the pistols, it made fights very easy to clear without anyone noticing me.

Slayers X - Firing The Hack Blood Laser Beam

Black Hole Slayer

It’s worth re-iterating that nothing about Slayers X is meant to be taken seriously. It’s a spin-off starring a character that could be the crystallised essence of the early 2000s. Take the spelling, for example. Discounting the typo of ‘Vengeance’ in the title, a good number of signs were misspelled throughout. It honestly added to the whole ‘sixteen-year-old high school fever dream’ feel. Hell, the final boss is a giant flying face that you fight with a big green laser beam while it talks about having sex with your mum. We’re clearly not on planet sensible here. It’s a world dreamt up by a teenager in the late nineties, after all, who has little to no idea how the world works.

All Slayers X really needed to nail was the moment-to-moment gameplay and it succeeded. The guns are fun to use, the enemies are fun to shoot and it has a big green laser beam that you can pull out when you’re in a bind. That meant it could sit there and revel in its own childish cheese. Slayers X sat down in ’98 and refused to grow up, leading to a chaotic explosion of broken glass and laser beams. As time capsules go, this one isn’t half bad. Better than a Furby and a copy of Definitely Maybe, anyway.

Review: JLab Go Charge Wireless Mouse

Using a touch screen to scroll and select items is all well and good. However, it isn’t as accurate as a mouse and dirty fingers make a mess of your display. Consequently, a good quality mouse will always be appealing. This is where the JLab Go Charge Wireless Mouse comes into play.

This sleek and attractive-looking device is the perfect travelling companion. If you have to commute or work away from home, you don’t want to take cumbersome gear with you. Accordingly, a small but perfectly formed mouse has to be top of your list. Additionally, a great keyboard like the JLab Go Wireless Keyboard is also a fine idea.

This excellent device is lightweight and hard-wearing. Moreover, it has silent buttons and an accurate central wheel, and it can be adjusted for right or left-handed users. As such, it is a user-friendly purchase that will improve your mobile setup.

What’s in the box of the JLab Go Charge Wireless Mouse?

  • The small packaging is attractive and strong. Furthermore, it highlights key selling points and is fully recyclable.
  • The JLab Go Charge Wireless Mouse is protected by blue tissue paper. This small touch enhances the professional finish while preventing unnecessary scratches. The refined design is pleasant to look at and the buttons are comfortably placed.
  • The USB-C charging cable is small but suitable for the task at hand.
  • The user guide highlights the fundamentals.

Technical aspects.

Whenever I use a wireless mouse, I worry about connectivity issues. Thankfully, the JLab Go Charge Wireless Mouse performed admirably. You may choose between a USB-C wireless dongle or 2 Bluetooth 5.0 connections. Subsequently, you can connect up to 3 devices for a seamless transition between each one.

Another concern is the DPI performance of your device. Depending on the task, you may require a smooth and steady input. Alternatively, you may wish for a lightning-fast cursor speed for gaming. Whatever you decide, the JLab Go Charge Wireless Mouse will keep up. Thanks to the adjustable settings, you can change the DPI sensitivity from 800 to 1600. As a result, there is an option to keep every person happy.

Build quality.

I’m a fan of mechanical devices. As such, the monotonous “click, click, click” sound doesn’t bother me. However, others may find the repetitive noise tiresome. Thankfully, the JLab Go Charge Wireless Mouse tackles this problem. With silent click buttons and a smooth gliding motion, this is as quiet as a hunting owl.

Alongside this, there are 6 buttons to choose from and a well-considered connectivity switch. As such, it is simple to flit between Bluetooth 5.0 and the wireless 2.4 GHz connections. Furthermore, the 10m wireless range is suitable for the average working setup.

This light mouse is ergonomically designed and is comfortable to use. Moreover, the ability to use it with either hand is a bonus. To maintain the sleek finish, JLab has hidden the USB dongle in the underside of the mouse. This was an excellent choice as it maintains the professional look, whilst keeping the dongle safe.

Is the JLab Go Charge Wireless Mouse worth it?

There are some excellent wireless gaming mice available. ROCCAT is my go-to option, but they are larger, heavier, and more expensive. As such, if you wish to have a useful and affordable device that is a Jack of all trades, then look no further. The JLab Go Charge Wireless Mouse feels nice and looks professional. What’s more, the silent clicks and excellent DPI sensitivity tick many boxes. As such, I liked this device and I recommend that you buy it here!

Review: AMVR Leather Face Cushion (PICO 4)

The AMVR Leather Face Cushion for PICO 4 (N4FC1) is the best answer to a problem faced by many PICO 4 owners. How to make the headset more comfortable to wear.

Installation

The most important factor for any accessory is that it’s simple to use, won’t cause damage, and is quick to install. If you can get it right, you’ll have a great product on your hands. The facemask from AMVR takes advantage of one of my favourite features of the PICO 4 – magnets! Installation is honestly as simple as pulling the stock face cover off and letting this one drop into place, snapping securely with the guide pegs and magnets. It’s beautifully simple.

Design and Comfort

There aren’t too many ways you can design a face cover for a VR headset; you’re bound by the constraints of the device and the practical aspects required. The AMVR Leather Face Cushion features a padded PU leather cushion that fits around the eyes and nose with a pre-installed silicone nose cover to prevent light from leaking in and spoiling the VR immersion. The frame is plastic, and the thing feels robust. During gameplay sessions, I never felt like it was flimsy or going to break on me. With only a discrete logo, it looks good when installed. I can also confirm it’s compatible with glasses, but if you want a little extra space, it will also work with the extender provided with the headset. The cushioned pad is attached via Velcro, so you can do this if you need to remove it for cleaning.

Comfort-wise, the face cushion is exceptional. It’s a noticeable difference between the firmer stock face cover and will easily sustain you for lengthy periods of wear. If you’re someone that doesn’t get on with the stock cover, this is the one I recommend. Over time the cushion can get a bit warm, but it wasn’t bad enough for me to stop gameplay. The face cover also features ventilation, which is a great addition.

What’s in the Box

In the box, you get:

  • 1x AMVR Leather Face Cushion
  • 1x Cleaning cloth
  • 1x Instruction Leaflet

Overall Thoughts

Overall, the AMVR Leather Face Cushion for PICO 4 is a great alternative if the stock face cover is too firm. With easy installation, supreme levels of comfort, fantastic build quality, and easy cleaning – it’s an easy recommendation for any PICO 4 user.

Xbox Potentially Teases Fable for June 11th Showcase.

0

Fable was once a pillar for Xbox alongside Halo and Gears, but has since been on a 12 year hiatus. In 2020 Xbox confirmed Fable was being rebooted by Forza Horizon developer Playground Games. Since then they have been radio silent and fans have been clamoring for an update. After a suspicious twitter post, it seems Xbox are potentially teasing Fable for the June 11th showcase.

The twitter post in question was posted at 5pm eastern standard time today. It features an Xbox controller covered in glitter, with a glitter trail leading to an image of the the Xbox showcase promotional image. It features rather fable-esque music as well.

https://twitter.com/xbox/status/1663651704133373953?s=46&t=w_NyYEVEmDZ3_iFkeZYfGQ

At first, you may think it’s far reaching to assume this post is teasing Fable, but after closer inspection, the dots start to connect themselves.

Firstly, the cameraman is following a glitter trail, which for Fable fans, you’ll know is how the player is led to objectives in the games!

https://twitter.com/the_crapgamer/status/1663698532832800768?s=46&t=w_NyYEVEmDZ3_iFkeZYfGQ

The music also sounds strikingly similar to the Bowerstone theme from Fable 1!

https://twitter.com/the_crapgamer/status/1663711740440330241?s=46&t=w_NyYEVEmDZ3_iFkeZYfGQ

As always take any rumor with a grain of salt. Fable being shown in some capacity would back up reports I heard a few weeks ago that Xbox was wanting to showcase it at either their summer showcase or at the game awards.

Fable is such an underrated franchise. Not to mention, Playground Games are simply one of the best studios in our industry. I cannot wait to see their take on Fable. Fingers crossed we see it June 11th at the Xbox Showcase!!

Review: JLab Go Wireless Keyboard

Being able to work on the move is essential for many people. Moreover, finding a convenient way to do this is easier said than done. So, do you take a laptop and have to carry it around all day? Or do you work on your phone and forget the keyboard and mouse? Both options are feasible, but they have their shortcomings as well. This is where the JLab Go Wireless Keyboard comes to the fore!

This compact TKL device is perfect for people who want to work whilst commuting. Alternatively, it is a handy option if you wish to work outside and soak up some sunshine. With a stylish and robust shell, comfortable keystroke distance and excellent connectivity options, this ticks many boxes. Additionally, it costs £19.99 and therefore, it’s an affordable option for many.

What’s in the box of the JLab Go Wireless Keyboard?

  • The slender box is sturdy and pleasant to the eye. Furthermore, the blue finish is complemented by key selling points and images. Additionally, it is fully recyclable, and that’s a plus point.
  • The JLab Go Wireless Keyboard is protected by blue tissue paper. This was unusual but pleasant, as it enhanced the professional finish. The slender and compact design is nice to look at and the USB dongle is hidden in the battery compartment.
  • 2xAAA batteries are needed as it has no in-built battery. Consequently, you’ll need to keep spare batteries at hand.
  • The user guide breaks down the fundamentals.

Technical aspects.

Portable keyboards can be phenomenal and awful! The smaller size can impact the size of the keys, the keystroke travel distance, and comfort. Thankfully, though, the JLab Go Wireless Keyboard was pleasant to use. The tactile keys are responsive and sizeable, and the layout is similar to the Apex 9 Mini. As such, using the keyboard for extended periods was a comfortable experience. Additionally, there is no way to adjust the height. Now, this may concern you, but the lie-flat position feels natural and was easy to use.

A major concern when using a wireless option is connectivity. Fortunately, the JLab Go Wireless Keyboard uses both 5.0 Bluetooth and a 2.4 GHz wireless dongle. Whichever you use, you are guaranteed a seamless experience. By flicking a switch, the keyboard will move between 3 different modes. Accordingly, you can connect up to 3 devices with ease. On top of this, you suffer with no latency issues, and I never experienced a drop in my connection.

Build quality.

Portable devices have to be robust and hard-wearing. Luckily, the JLab Go Wireless Keyboard is built to last. Moreover, it looks stylish as well. With a combination of matte and glossy black accents, it is refined but pleasant to the eye. Additionally, the multi-function keys are well-labelled and the control button is easy to locate.

Alongside this, there is a media knob to control any connected media device. Though this wasn’t entirely necessary, it was nice to have. JLab has done well to hide the USB dongle within the keyboard’s battery compartment. This ensures that the dongle won’t get lost while maintaining the device’s clean image.

Is the JLab Go Wireless Keyboard worth it?

Though I shouldn’t judge goods by their price point, I was worried that this would be woeful. Moreover, I feared the low price would equal low quality. Fortunately, I was completely wrong. Instead, the JLab Go Wireless Keyboard surprised me! Every aspect of the design was great and using it for extended periods was pleasant. What’s more, it looks great, and it is small enough to fit into your bag.

If you then consider its versatility, you’ll be impressed further still. Thanks to the Bluetooth and wireless connection, you can use this device on your PC or laptop, tablet and mobile phone. As such, it is the perfect option if you want to travel light. My only complaint, however, is the AAA battery situation. This isn’t great for the environment and you could run out of juice if you don’t carry spares. Yet, this is a minor complaint. Accordingly, this is an excellent investment and I recommend that you buy it here!

Review: The Rumble Fish 2

0

Fighting games live and die by the community that they build. If there is a strong online presence and an active community than there is a strong chance that the game will continue to be played years after the initial release. For new players, jumping into an online match and playing with others is where a majority of the fun comes from and when that isn’t avaliliable, the game runs the risk of being put down for good, no matter how solid the gameplay is. Unfortunately, that is a risk the genre runs and The Rumble Fish 2 has fallen victim to this. The time I spent playing the multitude of modes was fun but there was no pay off.

The story here follows several characters as they progress through an torunament held by an illigal fight club. With a multitude of characters to play through, Arcade mode alone is worth running through. I spent a lot of my time practicing the systems here since the CPU was capable of putting up a decent fight. This was also how I found my favorite character to play with, a simple fighter named Aran. After running through his story in arcade mode, I figured it was time to move on to the next best thing. Survival mode.

With a plethora of modes to play through, it is important to know that The Rumble Fish 2 has a pretty decent roster to enjoy for newcomers to the series. I had no prior experience with this game so seeing 3 character slots for DLC characters wasn’t too bad. Upon doing a little research though, it seems those DLC characters were previously available in the first title so it is a little disappointing to see them locked behind the paywall. This may not matter to new players but is something returning players might want to take note of, especially if it was one of their favorites.

Each character has their own unique moves and systems so there is something for everyone. A character can trigger an effect that allows them a set amount of time with their special ability. Some are able to heal themselves during this time frame while others take advantage of the extra damage boost. Aran, my main character, had an after shadow that followed up my moves with the previous move. This meant I was dealing out twice the damage if I could get my attacks to connect.

The visuals found here are reminiscent of old school 2-D fighters. I reviewed this on the Nintendo Switch OLED and found that the sprite work looked wonderful on the colorful screen. There is an option to switch on a scan line setting that gives the feeling of playing on an older monitor and this drove home that old school feeling. The animations are smooth and each characters limbs seemed to move on their own, which was a little jarring at first but grew on me over time. This allowed each movement to feel fluid and connect without making the models look stiff or out of place when attacking. As fights continue to progress, you are able to perform part breaks which will inflight cosmetic damage to characters. Some characters will lose articles of clothing while others will see their faces begin to swell from the constant beating they receive. This was a fun little mechanic to notice during each fight and I often found myself proud of the matches that ended with me in perfect condition while my opponents were left bruised and beaten.

Each stage is wonderfully designed and does a good job of being colorful without being too distracting. Fighting games have to have a fine balance so that players don’t loose focus on the fight or have their attention pulled away but all the stages found here fit perfectly within the games world while also being easy on the players. Stage music is also pretty catchy but there were no tracks that really stood out. The overall presentation here is alright and dosen’t pull away from the action too much.

With Arcade mode and Survival mode knocked out, I was feeling extremely confident in my skills so the next step was to take those skills online and find out where I stood amongst the other players. This is where my experience began to fall apart. Over the course of a week, I tried multiple times to find matches online and would wait upwards to 3 minutes just for an error to occur. I am unsure if this is a problem with North American servers or if there is a lack of a player base here but this really ruined the game for me. All the time I spent practicing with my characters amounted to nothing since there was no way for me to test my skills against other players. While there is a local versus mode, it was hard to convince friends to try out a new game when we had already established our routine games. This just shows the importance of the online presence and community. While I could probably find Discord groups to join and organize matches, That same amount of work could be put into me booting up a game that has a thriving community and would put me in matches right away.

Another issue that I found during my time might be a minor one over all but was one that I found bothersome enough to point out. Each character has their own personality and quirks that they bring to the table, which is expected in a game with a decent sized roster. It is important for players to be able to find a character they like and making characters different from one another helps create this space for players to find a fitting match. The Rumble Fish 2 has a great cast ranging from a fighting nurse to a kid carrying a paint brush. One character is a kid-swordsman who wears an eyepatch and has an interesting mechanic where she is able to switch stances during the fight. The issue I have was found when I finished my match against her with Aran. Being a typical womanizer, he makes a ton of comments in regards to not wanting to fight a woman or how he has no issue fighting men but struggles when it comes to fighting women.

After his fight with the child though, he says “can’t wait to see how you look in ten years. Hope you can leave the violence behind” which is extremely inappropriate to say to a kid. Since none of their ages are given in any of the information found in game, it is hard to gauge how old each character is but the character this is told to looks like a child so this is upsetting. Aran also seems to grope some of the women at the end of the match, rushing over to the them and crouching down after making suggestive hand gestures. While I enjoyed his play style, it was hard to like the character due to these moments.

Overall, I would love to say that The Rumble Fish 2 is worth picking up but with an online community that appears to be non existent and some character issues, it is hard to recommend., For those looking for a fun survival and arcade experience, there is a lot to be found here. If you have a group that is looking for some fun local matches, there is enough variety between the characters to make for some fun matchups. For those looking to play this online though? It is important to know that finding a match might be harder than any fight you are able to find.

2023 Might Be One of The Greatest Years in Gaming History.

0

We haven’t even made it to June and the first half of the year has been jam packed with major game releases. With many major releases still scheduled to come out, plus unannounced games yet to be confirmed, 2023 might be one of the greatest years in gaming history.

2023 Starts With a Bang

Some years start slow, others start fast. 2023 was the latter, as we kicked off the year with game after game, many of them receiving critical acclaim.

Firstly, we had Dead Space remake. Finally, after a ten year absence, EA’s survival horror franchise was brought back from the dead, and it was good… really good.

We then Spring-boarded into the most surprising game of the year, Hi-Fi Rush, developed by Tango Gameworks. Everything about this game was surprising, considering most thought Tango’s next game would most likely be Evil Within 3 (or something horror-like). But no, Hi-Fi Rush is a rhythm based action game with a colorful art style and wonderful cast of characters. To add to the surprise, it was shadow dropped! The full game launched the same day as Xbox’s developer direct, and it launched virtually bug free.

Then, Capcom’s remake of the legendary Resident Evil 4 was released shortly after, and to no surprise it was fantastic. Capcom themselves are on an amazing streak of releasing amazing games and this one was no different.

One of the major contributors to 2023 being one of the greatest years in gaming history is without a doubt The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This will be most gamers game of the year. It’s an innovative, sensational experience that deserves all the praise it’s getting.

Those four are only a small taste as many other games released in the first half such as Hogwarts Legacy, Wild Hearts, Forspoken, Wo Long, Atomic Heart, Dead Island 2, Star Wars Jedi Survivor, and many others!

Diablo 4 & Street Fighter 6

June already looks stacked with releases as three major blockbusters are launching in the month. We’ve already kicked the month off strong as two of those blockbuster games reviews went live today, and they are looking like GOTY contenders.

Firstly, Street Fighter 6, which launches June 2nd, 2023. The reviews came in today and it’s sitting at a whopping 92 metacritic for PlayStation 5!

Secondly, Diablo 4 also had reviews go live today, and it’s also sitting at an incredible 92 metacritic for Xbox Series X!

Lastly, the last major release for June is Final Fantasy 16, the long awaited new entry in the legendary franchise. Reviews aren’t out yet, but from the early previews we’ve seen, it’s looking like it’s gonna be one to remember. (Below is a link to the easy Allies preview for Final Fantasy 16. This is one of many early previews for the game but it’s one of my favorites).

Major Games Still Releasing in 2023

With such a jam packed first half, you’d think the second half would be lighter in comparison, but we still have many major games scheduled for release. Let’s look at some of the major releases still coming later this year.

First, is the brand new RPG from gaming legend Todd Howard and Bethesda Game Studios. If you’re a fan of Fallout or Elder Scrolls, this is one to keep your eye on. Starfield is scheduled to launch September 6th, 2023 for Xbox and PC.

Second, Spider-Man 2 from Insomniac games. Anything Spider-Man is always going to be massive, and after the incredible first game, the sequel should be nothing short of spectacular.

Third, Mortal Kombat 1. The latest addition to the legendary franchise is a series reboot bringing the series back to a more grounded feel.

Finally, Alan Wake 2. It’s been thirteen years since the first game, and fans have been clamoring for a new game since. Alan Wake 2 is a pure survival horror game, and the gameplay shown at the recent PlayStation showcase looks mind-blowing.

Again, these are only a few of the titles scheduled for release. Armored Core 6 is the newest game from legendary developer FromSoftware, releasing August 25th, 2023. Pikmin 4, Assassins Creed Mirage, and many more are still scheduled for release this year.

Not to mention, we are on the cusp of many summer showcases such as the Xbox show (June 11th), Summer Game Fest (June 8th), and Ubisoft Forward (June 12th). Many more games will be announced and given release dates at this show, potentially adding to an already amazing year.

Closing

When the PS5 and Xbox Series X launched back in 2020, many complained about the lack of major games releasing for the new hardware. There wasn’t many games showcasing the power of the hardware, not to mention many games weren’t releasing to critical acclaim.

2023 is showcasing the creativity and talent of the industry as a whole. Not only are lots of games releasing, the games themselves are just good.

If you have been waiting for games to come and validate your purchase of expensive new hardware, then 2023 is your year. There’s games for everyone, and many of them are releasing to outstanding quality. 2023 is without a doubt one of the greatest years in gaming history.

Gaming is so back.

Review: Afterimage

Afterimage could easily be confused for a Metroidvania title. Hell, even I was convinced for the first few hours. However, what becomes apparent is that this unusual title focuses on a non-linear storyline that enables you to explore freely and define your own paths. Moreover, this generates a rewarding experience as you construct the plot and enjoy the ending that you’ve worked towards.

This unique adventure title has plenty of special endings and a massive world to explore. Moreover, like the best RPGs, you can create a player that complements your playstyle. Furthermore, there is a vast range of equipment, magic, and “Afterimage” abilities to refine your experience further still. This was an excellent decision, as you can play this multiple times and no experience will be the same.

Developed by Aurogon Shanghai and published by Modus Game, this is a non-linear adventure title. What’s more, it has masses of RPG mechanics and a monstrously big world to explore. On top of this, there are oodles of creatures to defeat, 30 or so bosses to destroy, and 60+ NPCs to interact with. As such, there are plenty of tasks to enjoy, loads of creatures to slay, and an incredible skill tree to unlock.

The world is littered with chests and collectables.
Don’t miss out on the collectables or the special chests.

Afterimage tells a haunting tale.

You awaken in a dank cave with no memory of what has happened. Your mentor has been taken and you must rescue her, no matter the risk. However, this decision has devastating consequences. Renee’s decisions set into motion an unstoppable chain of events. Accordingly, how she behaves and who she helps will determine mankind’s fate.

This is a lot to take on for even the greatest of heroines. However, with the help of her mouthy but adorable sidekick, Renee will complete her goal. By exploring a vast number of unique environments, she will unlock new skills, find talent points, and avoid traps, obstacles, and other life-ending encounters. However, the massive bosses and never-ending creatures cannot be avoided. Therefore, you must study their quirks, focus on their weaknesses, and defeat every one of them.

A slow burner.

Renee is a capable fighter. However, she is limited in what she can do. Consequently, the action starts off slowly as you grind your way through wave after wave of grunts, creatures, and cruel bosses. However, as the action progresses, you’ll find new weapons and extra abilities. Moreover, you’ll discover new equipment and have the chance to upgrade your gear. These ideas aren’t new and the developers are stepping over some well-trodden ground. Yet, I liked how everything was drip-fed and the action wasn’t monotonous as a consequence.

Once you get to grips with your build and the gear you wish to use, you can focus on fine-tuning your abilities. The more bosses you defeat, and the better you are at finding collectables, the more “Afterimage” abilities you can unlock. These special powers are essential if you wish to explore every location. Without them, you will not be able to crawl through gaps or leap large chasms. Moreover, they are essential whenever you are tackling some of the harder bosses.

You fall through the air with ease.
Where will you land?

Big boss battles and plenty of quests.

Exploring each area was exciting and interesting. With plenty of NPCs to interact with and an array of side quests to undertake, you won’t get bored. Whether you are looking for ingredients, trying to find artefacts, or helping someone to complete their adventure, it never becomes tiresome. However, your progress can be hindered by the brutally tough boss battles.

Whenever you stumble across a gargantuan beast, your heart sinks. These sinister creatures will stop at nothing to kill you. Sadly, this pretty much always happens and you’ll end up respawning at the nearest checkpoint. On top of that, you’ll lose your XP unless you can get to your grave before you die again. Think of Dark Souls and you kinda get what I mean. Alongside this, if you use a checkpoint to reheal yourself, you respawn every creature. Subsequently, it can be tough to navigate the windy labyrinthine world, as the creatures are always there.

However, back to the bosses! These cruel menaces follow a set routine of attacks. Accordingly, you must study their form and attack their weaknesses. Yet, this isn’t always enough, and this is where your special abilities and character build come into question. By selecting the right gear, and making the most of every ability, you will bamboozle your opponent and win each encounter.

Afterimage looks amazing.

Afterimage is one of the most attractive indie titles I’ve played. The stunning blend of colours and interesting backdrops are a treat to the eyes. Moreover, the incredible character models and smooth animation make it a joy to play. On top of this, the vast world is breathtaking and the mixture of obvious and hidden paths works incredibly well.

This is complemented by the whimsy audio. The magical music comprises 40 original songs that set a rich and atmospheric scene. The soundtrack is incredibly relaxing whilst adding drama and depth at the right times. This is supported perfectly by the fantasy sound effects and the fantastic acting.

Aesthetically, Afterimage is the perfect example of what an indie game should be! Its buttery smooth performance is only bettered by the incredibly captivating music. As such, this has to be one of the best-looking and sounding indie games of 2023.

The hero is tackling a giant warrior fungus.
He isn’t a fun….guy

Brilliant controls.

The combat can be as fast or as slow as you wish. You can equip dual blades to slice your foes to bits, or bludgeon them with a massive “Greatsword”. Alternatively, you can master your magic as you cast fireballs and other mind-blowing spells. However you approach each situation, you are guaranteed a smooth experience. The brilliant controls are responsive, well laid out, and easy to understand. Furthermore, any new skills are clearly explained, and this prevents you from getting confused or frustrated.

Afterimage oozes replay value and longevity. Thanks to the massive world and the multiple endings, you can return to play this many times. Moreover, there are countless character builds and a vast arsenal of weapons to select from. What’s more, you can upgrade your gear to create a powerful and almost unstoppable warrior.

Afterimage is incredibly good.

Indie games get plenty of stick for not breaking the mould. Sadly, the market is saturated with poor titles and this prevents the hidden gems from being discovered. However, Afterimage stands out from its peers as it tells a wonderful story and looks and sounds incredible. Alongside this, the combat is slick and the quests are enjoyable. My only complaint is that the large world can be overwhelming. Furthermore, it can be tough to remember what ability you need to access each unexplored area. However, these issues are minor in the grand scheme of things. Accordingly, I loved this spectacular game and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you regain your memories? Explore each vast location, learn new skills, and save your mentor.

Review: Demon Skin

Hack ‘n Slash games aren’t my cup of tea. I don’t enjoy the mindless combat and the endless waves of monsters and foes. However, Demon Skin is different. This dark and cruel title is brutally tough, and it has some excellent combat mechanics. Moreover, its sinister story is captivating, and the setting is uncomfortably morbid.

Developed by Ludus Future and published by ESDigital Games, this is a hack ‘n Slash title. What’s more, it has some old-school adventure elements and a vast arsenal of weapons at your disposal. On top of this, the monsters are unbelievably tough, and the game pushes you to your limits.

Demon Skin tells a cruel tale.

Being a hero isn’t an easy task. Yet, you don’t expect your life to be turned upside down when you try to save the world. Sadly, this is exactly what happens in Demon Skin! The protagonist, a member of the Order of Wanderers, witnesses a sinister ritual. Trying to prevent it from ending, he throws himself into a flow of energy. This split-second decision has serious ramifications as he is turned into a demon. Not happy with his new form, he must undertake an adventure like no other. En route, he will slay monsters, find new powers, and hopefully restore his former glory.

The story is absurd, but it works well with the fantasy theme. Moreover, the gruff characters and evil overlords add a grandiose element to this odd title. As you push further into the gameplay, you explore some excellent environments. Each of these locations has vast dangers that must be avoided and death is disappointingly all but assured. However, if you die, you will thankfully respawn at a nearby checkpoint. Fortunately, the developers have kindly integrated a vast number of checkpoints to mitigate the guarantee of failure.

A moonlit village must be explored.
The world is oddly beautiful.

Linear gameplay but excellent combat.

I have to be in the mood for a linear tale. Sadly, I find the funnelled mindset too restrictive, and this usually frustrates me. Yet, Demon Skin does a great job of keeping you focused, as the combat is never-ending. Furthermore, the excellent and slick fighting mechanics are fascinating and will test the best gamers of this genre.

The hero has a choice of 3 stances to overcome his opponents. Depending on which one you select, they’ll have an impact on your foes. For example, a low blow to a skeleton will knock it off balance. You can use these small bits of intel to your advantage, and kick every creature’s ass. Alongside this, you’ll have to dodge and weave to avoid unwanted attention. Luckily, each creature follows a set pattern whenever they are attacking. Consequently, all you must do is study their form, learn their patterns, and use this knowledge to your advantage.

This approach works wonderfully well with each of the massive bosses that you must annihilate. These awful entities kick your ass repeatedly. However, once you understand what must be done, you’ll make light work of their advances.

Enjoy the basic platforming elements.
Make sure to leap those chasms.

Weapons and a simple skill tree.

The combat element was incredible. Blocking your foes by selecting the right stance is tricky, but achievable. Yet, what makes this element even better is the arsenal of weapons at your disposal. Each blade, axe, or bludgeoning device has unique characteristics. Subsequently, you must study the combo guide to get the best out of each weapon. alongside this, they have special attributes that add to your attack and defence. As such, you must pick the right weapon for each combat encounter.

What wasn’t so great, however, was the simple skill tree. I expected this to have a deep and rich character development. Unfortunately, I was wrong! Instead, as you level up, you get to select between attack, stamina, and health. This is the extent of the character progression, and it wasn’t enough for a modern game. Accordingly, though the rest of the action is rewarding and interesting, the character progression is undercooked and disappointing.

Demon Skin looks great, but the acting is woeful.

I cannot find fault with the grim visuals. The 2D side-scrolling nature of the action works perfectly with the linear gameplay. Furthermore, the varied stage design keeps you interested and the character models are detailed and unusual. On top of this, the animation is smooth, and this helps the aforementioned combat mechanics.

You must also consider the basic but interesting platforming mechanics. This element ensures that the linear approach didn’t become tedious. Moreover, there are plenty of hidden treasure chests, skill points, and other key items that must be searched for.

I can’t complement the visuals enough. However, the audio wasn’t so great. annoyingly, the acting was wooden at best. What’s more, the spoken dialogue didn’t match the subtitles. Therefore, it was confusing and didn’t work well at all. However, this issue to one side, the music and the sound effects were good. The grim-sounding tunes add a gritty edge to an already dark experience. As such, it sets the scene and was very impressive.

Fire balls rain down on the hero.
Burn baby burn.

Occasionally clumsy controls.

The combat was slick and smooth, but it was held back by the occasionally clumsy controls. Sadly, the dodge and rolling commands are linked to the same input. As such, you’ll make numerous mistakes and get hit or killed unnecessarily. On top of this, the hero has a turning circle of a tanker. Consequently, when you are trying to avoid falling spikes or leaping across crumbling platforms, it is unbelievably tough.

Demon Skin has limited replay value or longevity. Though there are plenty of collectables to find and loads of weapons to try out, the action rarely changes. As such, if you wish to complete this game, you’ll have to endure the same action repeatedly, and that will get somewhat tiresome. Yet, the first playthrough is great and challenging and will keep you busy for hours.

Demon Skin is a slow burner.

It took me a considerable amount of time to get into Demon Skin. I found the action to be frustrating, and I didn’t get the concept. However, once I understood the key elements, I fell for its gritty and grim charms. Moreover, the bosses are great, the weapons are incredible, and the combat is incredibly slick. Accordingly, I loved it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you regain your old form? Kill every foe, master each weapon, and make the Order of Wanderers proud.

What Is Minesweeper?

0

Minesweeper is a classic computer game that has stood the test of time and continues to engage people of all ages. The main idea behind the game is to clear a grid of hidden mines without detonating one. Players use logic and probability to figure out where the mines are located, based on the numbered clues provided on the grid. In this article, we’ll take a deeper look at strategies for mastering the game, and its continued popularity in the digital age. Keep reading to learn more about this iconic game.

Strategies for Mastering Minesweeper

img

Although when you play Minesweeper it relies partly on luck, several strategies can greatly increase your chances of success. First, players should focus on opening as many squares as possible by clicking on corners or edges of the grid. This minimizes the risk of accidentally clicking on a mine while providing valuable clues about the surrounding squares. As you progress through the game, these clues will help create a clearer picture of where mines are likely to be located, allowing you to make more informed decisions about where to click next.

An essential skill in Minesweeper is the ability to recognize patterns. Certain combinations of numbers on the grid provide definitive information about the location of nearby mines. By familiarizing yourself with these patterns, you can rapidly deduce which squares are safe to click and which should be flagged as potential mine locations. To speed up your gameplay, you can use the left and right mouse buttons simultaneously to clear safe squares, a technique known as chording.

Developing a winning strategy also involves understanding probability and making calculated risks when necessary. When faced with an ambiguous situation, try to weigh the likelihood of a mine being present based on the information given and the overall density of mines on the grid. This can help you make more accurate decisions in situations where an educated guess is required. With practice and persistence, you’ll find your win rate and speed improving over time.

The Timeless Appeal of Minesweeper

Despite its age, the simple and addictive nature of Minesweeper ensures it remains popular even today. The game has stood the test of time due to its satisfying combination of skill, luck, and risk. There is a compelling sense of achievement in methodically clearing a grid, making players eager to try again and improve their performance. The rapid pace of Minesweeper games also encourages replayability, as players can finish a game within minutes and immediately start another. Players might also like classic games such as Sudoku and chess.

Modern Minesweeper

img

Modern technology has allowed for the creation of online leaderboards and speed-running communities, fostering a competitive and social aspect of the game. Minesweeper enthusiasts can now share their strategies, compete against each other, and participate in online tournaments, adding a new dimension to the experience. This sense of camaraderie and challenge has helped keep the game alive and thriving in the digital age.

Moreover, the game’s minimalist design and straightforward ruleset make it a versatile pastime that can be enjoyed casually or in more serious contexts. From web-based versions and mobile apps to in-browser extensions and custom clones, Minesweeper has adapted seamlessly to modern platforms and will continue to appeal to future generations of puzzle enthusiasts.

Minesweeper has successfully maintained its undeniable charm and addictive gameplay throughout the years. Its timeless combination of logic, pattern recognition, and luck has cultivated a dedicated following and continued relevance in the world of gaming. As technologies evolve, Minesweeper adapts to various platforms and player preferences, ensuring this classic game remains a beloved pastime for many years to come.
