If you’re the sort of person who watches a lot of television, then you might wish to express your love of your favourite shows by investing in the appropriate merchandise. Some popular shows have attracted legions of devotees, and lend themselves naturally to merchandise.
What kind of merchandise can you collect?
Merchandise comes in a variety of forms. Some are pretty generic. You might find keyrings, mugs and posters to commemorate just about any television property. Posters, naturally, are created for every show that wants an audience. Others kinds of merchandise are a little bit more specific. You might look for a replica of the magic sword from your favourite swords-and-sorcery show, and hang it above your fireplace.
T-shirts are a popular form of merch. Some of the best and most memorable designs in this space are actually fan-created. They might take elements from multiple properties and combine them in interesting ways.
Which shows are popular with merch?
The shows which generate the most merchandise also tend to be the ones that are popular with a large audience. Friends, the Office, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad: they all have their share of merchandise on offer.
In some cases, the show itself might contain the exact item that’s being sold as merchandise. You might think of replica uniforms from Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica. On the other hand, there are the Hellfire Club t-shirts, which featured in the last season of Netflix’s Stranger Things.
What lends a TV show merch appeal is a little more difficult to quantify than simple viewing figures. After all, for decades, millions of people have been watching Coronation Street – but Coronation Street merchandise remains rather thin on the ground (though it does exist).
To get people to buy merch, a show must therefore be not only watched, but loved. This is something that only a minority of shows manage to achieve.
Why collecting TV show merch is so popular
Many modern TV watchers are looking for something more than a way to spend an hour or so on a Wednesday night. They’re also looking for a sense of identity, and a way to clearly express their enthusiasm in a way that other people might recognise. We see the same phenomenon in the world of sports, where a team’s shirt might be worn by a person who is unlikely to actually participate in the sport in question.
I’ve recently looked at the VOLTME 140W GaN charger, and I was thoroughly impressed. It has an amazing build quality and it can fast-charge multiple devices. However, I was conscious of its price tag. Consequently, when I was offered the VOLTME 100W GaN charger I couldn’t resist. On paper, this excellent device does a similar job to its beefier cousin. Yet, this compact powerhouse is available at a fraction of the cost. At around £70, this device offers a lot of bang for your buck.
Alongside the excellent price point, you experience the same phenomenal build quality and usability. Furthermore, it allows you to charge up to 3 devices simultaneously. However, you must provide your own USB charging cables and a further caveat is mentioned. The user guide highlights that a USB-C 5A E-marker cable must be used if you want the maximum 100W output. Fortunately, though, this isn’t an issue, as these cables are easy to buy. Alternatively, many high-end devices, such as the Samsung S22 series, provide them as standard.
What’s in the box of the VOLTME 100W GaN charger?
The simple packaging is adorned with key selling points. What’s more, the muted tones are juxtaposed with bright accents. Furthermore, the fully recyclable packaging was a huge plus point.
The VOLTME 100W GaN charger is compact but heavy. The black plastic casing has a tactile dimpled effect and is well constructed. To the front, there is an LED to show when it is on and 3 USB points. The lower 2 are designed for USB-C cables and the top one is for USB-A. Consequently, the USB-C ports are higher rated and deliver the optimum charging rate.
A simple user manual. This guide highlights how to use the charger. Moreover, it states the charging power when multiple devices are connected (more on that later).
Technical aspects.
Whenever you consider a multi-charge adapter, you must consider a few points. First, you must know it is safe to use. Second, how long will it take to charge my goods? Finally, is it robust and portable? Bear with me while I break down each of these points for you.
Fast charging often creates a lot of residual heat. Subsequently, this can cause concern and potential fire risks. Fortunately, VOLTME has considered this problem. By incorporating GaN III technology, the VOLTME 100W GaN charger has some incredible safety features. Accordingly, at no point do you fear that your devices will overheat, overcharge, or short circuit. This approach was undeniably reassuring and one that I appreciated.
Alongside this, I was amazed by how quickly this charged my devices. The list of compatible tech is impressive. In short, if it charges via a USB, it more than likely can be used with this charger. However, specifically, it will charge a MacBook Pro in under 2 hours. Remember, though, this figure applies to a premium setup. As such, if you were charging 2 items at once, the performance was understandably reduced.
Finally, let’s consider the build quality. The VOLTME 100W GaN charger is rugged, robust, and small enough to be considered portable. Furthermore, it has a sizeable weight, and each port is sturdy and well-placed. Moreover, the handy LED indicator makes it easy to see when it is powered. On top of this, it is much smaller than the VOLTME 140W GaN charger, and that helps if you have a smaller workspace.
Is the VOLTME 100W GaN charger worth it?
As much as I adored this excellent charger, is it worth your money? Well, absolutely! This amazing bit of tech will transform the way you charge your devices. What’s more, the high-powered ports ensure that you’re juiced up in no time at all. Alongside this, it is compatible with multiple brands and is easy to use. Accordingly, if you need no more than 100W of charging power, then I recommend that you buy it here! (US customers can buy it here!) Alternatively, if you want a bit more oomph, buy the VOLTME 140W GaN chargerhere!
The concept behind the FIFA game began all the way back in 1993, championed by Electronic Arts. It gained its licence from Fédération Internationale de Football Association that year. Since then, its popularity has skyrocketed!
So what made this game an international success and a staple in everyone’s console game collection?
It reflects real-life games
The FIFA console games authentically imitate actual football games. This is something that players love, and it’s one of the main reasons the game has gone from strength to strength.
Players can play the teams they care about, with incredibly accurate depictions of actual players. In the latest version of the game, FIFA 23, you can choose from over 19,000 players from more than 700 teams in more than 30 leagues. And the graphics seem to become more detailed with each new game that EA releases.
As far as English leagues go, you can play as teams from the Premier League and Women’s Super League. Premier League teams such as Liverpool, Chelsea or Manchester United are popular choices within the game.
Players can build their own teams by choosing football players based on their individual performance statistics too, which encourages strategic thinking. As a player, you are allocated a certain number of coins and can use these to purchase players, just as in real life.
You can take your pick of over 100 stadiums, each based on real venues. The incredible level of detail extends beyond the game to the onlooking crowds; they are comprised of individuals with unique faces and body types.
They update the game annually
The creators of the game keep things fresh by introducing new rules and features every time a new version comes out. This prevents the game from getting stale and keeps players feeling excited about gameplay.
For example, in the latest iteration, FIFA 23 introduced a new dribbling technique called “technical dribbling”. This adds new animations, gives seasoned FIFA players a new skill to learn and makes dribbling a lot more realistic.
The FIFA console game itself has always positioned itself as a global game, representing football leagues, teams and players from all around the globe. This makes the game’s market astronomical, and this has helped to secure its success over the past thirty years.
It appeals to all ages
Another strength of the FIFA console games is their appeal to all different age groups.
Though we often associate video games with teens and young adults, the FIFA console games tap into an interest that is shared by fans of all ages: football. This gives it a timeless appeal that makes it marketable to players both young and old. It’s no coincidence that FIFA has risen to prominence as one of the most popular video games. Constant updates and strikingly realistic graphics help ensure the game never goes out of fashion!

Would another retro game make you happy or sad? I know it is a divisive subject, but I love a casual indie title that can be enjoyed between triple-A experiences. As such, the excellent team at 8-Bit Legit and Kunjee Studios has released Roniu’s Tale.
Exclusive to Nintendo Switch and NES cartridge, this old-school game reeks of nostalgia. What’s more, you’ll adore its simplicity, its garish colour palette, and the head-scratching puzzles. With 47 levels of puzzling fun, epic boss battles, and 4 magical skills to master, you’ll have plenty of weapons on hand and loads of stages to overcome.
What does Kunjee Studios say about Roniu’s Tale?
Step into the shoes of a hopeless wizard who tried to run away from his problems and found himself in a bigger mess. Accordingly, you’ll help Roniu to access his magic. Moreover, he’ll find his way through a deadly dungeon while killing a plague of enemies hellbent on keeping him there. Steady now, you’re no longer on stable ground!
Inspired by games like Solomon’s Key and Adventures of Lolo, Roniu’s Tale is a head-scratching top-down puzzler with action elements. Furthermore, each level is designed to have one or more paths but beware: each move Roniu takes will cause the tiles to crumble as he passes. Consequently, you’ll need to watch your step as danger lurks at every corner. What’s more, you’ll need to search for the orbs and keys to escape!
Play the game with the NES Online controllers for a real-retro experience that will zap you back into the heyday of cartridge gaming.

What’s the cost and where can I buy them?
Premium items come at a higher cost. However, I firmly believe that you get what you pay for. As such, I never baulk at the price point of any elite product. Moreover, the SteelSeries Destiny 2: Lightfall collection is so special that I expected the price tag to match.
Kandria is a dark and melancholy title that many liken to the wonderful Celeste. Because of its tough platforming elements and quick-movement puzzles, people have forgotten its unique nature and phenomenal mechanics. However, though I can see similarities between the 2 games, Kandria is a special experience that stands on its own two feet.
Developed and published by Shirakumo Games, this is an exploration platformer. Furthermore, there is a wonderful story, some incredible characters, and an amazing post-apocalyptic world to explore. On top of this, its aesthetics are amazingly grim, and the audio is atmospheric, moody, and brilliantly captivating. In short, it’s a challenging title that won’t disappoint.
Hunt for resources.
Kandria is a tale of trust.
The world has been destroyed and mankind is on the brink. Moreover, gadgets and technology are scarce and factions battle for minor gains. Consequently, when an android is found, the settlers are unnerved. However, a brave engineer knows this robot can save them and trusts her instincts. From here, the colony starts to thrive and though they do not trust their latest member, they happily reap the rewards of its exploits.
You control the android named “Stranger”. This special machine can run at high speeds, dash across gaps, and slay any enemy it finds. Furthermore, its computer systems ensure it can complete any quest it faces while communicating over vast distances. Though this emotionless machine cannot feel, it understands the hatred and fear that surrounds it. However, this doesn’t stop it from wanting to learn or help the surrounding communities.
A vast world that is full of possibilities.
The exploration elements comprise many key Metroidvania tropes. Yet, you may freely explore this vast and dank world. Unlike its peers, Kandria doesn’t halt your progress behind special abilities or unique objects. Instead, you can wander freely and interact with whomever you please. Now, this was a nice twist on a familiar genre. However, the lack of structure was a little unnerving. Thankfully, though, the developers made it easy to track your quests. Consequently, this was a lifesaver, as there are many tasks to undertake.
You’ll spend much of your time helping the scared residents of this dire area. Whether they ask you to find resources, repair equipment, hunt individuals or slay creatures, the jobs are interesting. Alongside this, you may undertake time trials to prove your prowess or trade with merchants to buy and sell rare items. Furthermore, there is a basic upgrade system that allows you to improve your sword. Though this wasn’t the most in-depth concept I’ve ever seen, it was essential during the latter parts of the story.
Take down your foes.
Simple combat and excellent platforming mechanics.
The quests are all well and good. However, the core gameplay revolves around puzzles, combat, and platforming mechanics. “Stranger” is undeniably nimble and uses this to their advantage. By darting from platform to platform, they explore tight spaces and avoid traps. What’s more, there are resources to gather and POI to examine. This fast-paced platforming action was tricky to master. However, once you knew what you were doing, it was great fun.
Sadly, the same can’t be said for each battle. This lacklustre affair is dull and often tedious. With minimal difficulty, you’ll slash and hammer everything in your path. Occasionally, you’ll have to dodge your opponent’s attack or defeat the equivalent of a small boss. Yet, even these encounters are too easy and this was frustrating. Had the developers incorporated a combo system or tougher creatures, then this would have been vastly improved.
Kandria is uncomfortably beautiful.
Where Kandria excels is its incredible aesthetics. The moody and gloomy post-apocalyptic world is fascinating to explore. Furthermore, the muted tones and earthy colour palette add to the misery. Alongside this, I loved how you’d travel to the top of decrepit buildings or explore dank underground worlds. Either way, the variety in backdrops and the juxtaposition between open-and-closed spaces were fascinating. The world was great, but I adored the pixelated graphics more. This simple approach worked perfectly! Moreover, the smooth animation and speedy movement were great to look at.
On top of the amazing visuals, you’ll enjoy a wonderfully atmospheric soundtrack. The haunting songs add to the eerie ambience. Furthermore, the aggressive music enhances otherwise dull combat encounters.
Best to avoid the lava pit.
Verified for Steam Deck.
Kandria can be enjoyed on a PC, laptop, or Steam Deck. Whichever you choose, you’ll like the easy-to-understand controls. However, I found it much easier to play on Steam Deck. Here, the setup is more intuitive, and this helps the platforming elements. Either way, the controls are responsive and the UI is simple to navigate. What’s more, the map can be viewed at the push of a button. Accordingly, this helps overcome many of the Metroidvania mechanics.
With such a large world to explore and multiple factions to interact with, there is plenty to do. As such, this oozes both replay value and longevity. Sadly, though, with no skill tree or in-depth upgrade options, it feels a bit shallow. Had the developers incorporated a basic upgrade system, then the game would have been vastly improved.
Kandria is an excellent indie title.
The indie market is saturated. Consequently, choosing a great game from a poor one is an extremely tough ask. However, I’m happy to say that Kandria is an excellent indie title. Yes, it is fair to compare it to Celeste, but it excels on its own merit. With amazing platforming elements, a nice story, and interesting characters, you’ll fall for its charms. Unfortunately, though, a lack of custom options or upgrade elements will disappoint many gamers. Accordingly, despite these issues, I still recommend that you buy it here! Can an emotionless robot save mankind? Leap, attack, and trade your way to success.
If, like me, you’re a user of standalone VR headsets; then you know that battery is still one of the biggest problems in this space. On average, PICO 4 will last for about 3 hours of gaming while Meta Quest 2 is between 2-3 hours of playtime. So what is a VR player who likes long gaming sessions to do? That’s where the BOBOVR Battery Kits come into play!
Who is BOBOVR?
BOBOVR are a company specialising in improving the comfort and usability of VR headsets and has been doing so since 2014. They’re ready to assist if you need products for commercial or consumer reasons. It’s refreshing to see a company with such a simple mission and offer that to both business users and regular users alike.
Right now, their products are primarily aimed at the Quest 2, with cases and face covers that have built-in ventilation being offered in addition to the battery and strap sets. They are now also moving into accessories for PICO 4 with a strap upgrade that integrates this tried and tested battery system to extend gameplay sessions. Just how good are these BOBOVR Battery Kits?
BOBOVR BD2-P4 Twin Battery Upgrade Combo (PICO 4)
When PICO 4 was released, I was seriously impressed with the quality of the headset from both a build and performance perspective. You can check out my full review here. However, as with all VR standalone headsets, the battery life is an issue. There’s only so much you can do with the space you’ve got without making the headset too cumbersome, unbalanced, or heavy.
The first of the BOBOVR Battery Kits I’m checking out is the BOBOVR BD2-P4 which is specially designed for the PICO 4.
The strap is a little more involved to install, but everything you need is in the very well-packaged box. Again, the unboxing experience was great, and I was impressed with the simplicity of the instructions. To install, you first must remove the face cover (easy with the PICO’s magnets) and unhook the top strap, removing it from the back piece. Next, you need to pry off the back cushion and replace it with the battery plate and head support. After that, you loop the new strap through and hook it back at the front, and you’re done.
PICO 4 is renowned for being exceptionally well balanced, as I was worried that adding this weight at the back would spoil this, and I haven’t run into this issue to a large extent. You will notice the increased weight, but it isn’t uncomfortable in long gameplay sessions. My only gripe about the P4 Strap is that the extra support pad makes the headset feel a little too snug when the PICO 4 is extended out to its full size. This minor gripe, though, is outweighed by the premium feel, the strap comfort, and the bonus of the battery system. The bright orange cable runs cleanly down the strap and connects to the PICO 4’s USB-C port. The little clip is a nice touch to ensure the cable is managed nicely.
Of course, this isn’t just a strap. This a strap with hot-swappable batteries. The pack includes a charger station and two batteries. The charger station is sleek and simple and enables you to charge both batteries at the same time. This means you never need to be without power when using the PICO 4. A single USB-C cable powers the dock, and the batteries attach to it magnetically. The magnets are strong enough to hold them in place even if knocked or turned upside down. You can also plug a USB-C cable directly into each battery individually. Perfect if you have more than two but only one charger station. That is also the wonderful thing about this system; the batteries can be bought separately and are all interchangeable and hot-swappable.
The magnets are also in use on the headset port itself. They’re also strong enough to ensure a secure and satisfying click when they connect. It is effortless and incredibly satisfying to connect and disconnect the batteries.
Each battery provides an additional 2-3 hours of playtime (conveniently, it only takes 3 hours to charge a battery from 0-100% on the dock), so you can basically play standalone VR indefinitely. It’s well-designed and works incredibly well. Overall, this is a great bundle to enhance your PICO 4 experience.
What’s in the box:

Flexible support x1
PU pads set x1
Honeycomb pads set x1
Cable clip x1
Prying tool x1
Top strap with metal ring x1
Twin Charger Station x1

BOBOVR M2 Plus Twin Battery Combo (Quest 2)
My biggest gripe with the Meta Quest 2 has, and always will be, the stock strap. It’s dreadful and feels cheap. Sure, it makes the overall unit lighter, but it also makes the headset very front-heavy.
The BOBOVR M2 Plus provides a far superior comfort level and brilliantly balances the weight distribution.
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the packaging, the simplicity of the unboxing experience and the clarity of the instructions.
Removing the stock strap is thankfully straightforward, and I was thankful that connecting this unit was just as easy. You loop the top strap through the buckle behind the eye cushion and slide the arms into the connector. That’s it. Utilising a dial at the back of the now more study strap, you can adjust the size and tighten and loosen the strap accordingly. I will say that this feels far more premium than the stock strap included with the Quest 2. It also feels more comfortable and far more durable.
The M2 Plus strap provides multiple adjustment points to ensure the user’s comfortable and secure fit while wearing the headset. The increased use of padding also ensures maximum support and comfort while wearing. While wearing the headset with this strap for prolonged gameplay, I didn’t feel fatigued or uncomfortable. Sometimes, it didn’t feel like it sat low enough on my head, but playing with the adjustments mostly solved that issue. I would like to see the top cushions be adjustable to account for uniquely shaped heads like mine! Also, if you didn’t like the PU leather pad, you can detach the Velcro and apply the honeycomb pads instead; although these weren’t nearly as comfortable, it’s nice that they include options.
Of course, this product isn’t just a strap – it also includes two of the BOBOVR B2 Battery Packs and the Twin Charger Station. They operate the same way described above in the BOBOVR BD2-P4 review.
A single USB-C cable runs along the strap very neatly and plugs into the headset’s USB-C port. It’s simple and clean; more importantly, the cable doesn’t get in the way.
With both batteries in use, you can double the playtime of your Quest 2. While using one, charge the other on the charging pad and play indefinitely! It takes about three hours to charge the battery from 0 to 100%.
Overall, I was incredibly impressed with this pack. It feels well-designed, well-made, and works.
What’s in the box:
Head strap x1
PU leather pad x1
Honeycomb pad set x1
USB-C cable x1
Twin Charger Station x1

Final Thoughts on the BOBOVR Battery Kits
BOBOVR products are exceptionally well made, feel premium, and are reasonably priced overall. While I have a few nit-picks, I can’t complain about the utility and comfort offered by the BOBOVR Battery Kits for Quest 2 and PICO 4. If you’re a VR gamer, you need these products to enhance your playtime in the most convenient way possible.

Although this is a spoiler-free review allimages used have been taken from the episode.
It isn’t often when I sit down to watch a movie or television show that I’m left stunned into silence. Literally, I sat staring, just processing everything that took place. Most recently, it happened with Star Trek Picard Episode 1 – The Next Generation. This is my spoiler-free review.
Background
Star Trek Picard was an interesting concept from when it was first announced. The first two seasons had issues, and it’s hard to ignore that many fans were left wanting. I will preface this by saying I enjoyed Seasons 1 and 2 of Picard. My only complaint is around a Season 2 character choice because, dammit, Jim, I wanted a Stargazer spinoff. But I digress.
Season 3 promised a final journey for the Next Generation, and so far, that’s been delivered in spades. From tiny set details showcasing props from TNG all the way through to plot points that hark back to Trek of old, it’s there. What is exceptionally brilliant is that you don’t need to have seen any Next Generation or Picard to enjoy this episode. If you have, you’ll get a lot more from it, but it isn’t necessary. In that way, Picard Season 3 feels like it’s for the old guard to bathe in nostalgia and new fans to jump on and enjoy some very well-written Sci-Fi.
I appreciate this accessibility. Now I can pester friends and family to watch it and geek out to them without them rolling their eyes because I spent twenty minutes talking about the significance of “that prop” on a show they haven’t seen. After all, ‘catching up’ is daunting. Ok, they’ll probably still roll their eyes, but it’s lovely to see.
The opening episode of Season 3 has plenty going on. We see the reunion of Picard and Riker, a glimpse at what some characters have been up to, and an introduction to the new hero ship, the beautifully designed USS Titan A and her … unique … Captain. We also got a subplot with Raffi that knocked me for six and then made me cheer when details were expanded on. I’m sure it will tie up later with the main story. Then, after all of that, it ended on a cliffhanger. It’s everything I wanted and more.
Acting
The acting in Star Trek Picard Season 3: Episode 1 is exceptional. The opening few minutes with the wonderful Gates McFadden gives us a new side of Beverly, one that has only been teased in a few tense moments but leaves us asking many questions about what has been happening in the past twenty years. The performance she gave was fantastic.
We then get treated to the buddy pairing of Jonathan Frakes (Riker) and Sir Patrick Stewart (Picard). It’s like they never stopped playing these characters. The quips, the little looks, the back-and-forth banter between the pair has only gotten stronger since those Next Generation days. It’s like visiting family after a long time away; seeing them together makes you smile.
Michelle Hurd (Raffi) is back, having appeared in both Seasons 1 and 2 of Picard, and I’m so thankful she is. As one of the more nuanced and interesting characters we’ve seen in Star Trek, the initial scenes made my heart sink. This is perhaps the only emotional reaction that needs you to have seen the prior two seasons to appreciate. When more details came to light, I vocally cheered. Michelle plays the role superbly and draws you into the character’s pain.
Jeri Ryan is also back from Seasons 1 and 2 of Picard as the fabulous Seven of Nine. Star Trek Voyager fans will enjoy the performance here as with the subtlest of looks or actions, we get the Seven we know and love. However, she’s evolved, matured, and assimilated as best she can into Starfleet, and it’s interesting to see how that plays out. There’s also a Janeway name drop which is exciting!
While the cast did an outstanding job, the other main character to speak of here is Captain Liam Shaw of the USS Titan A. Played as precisely as the character insists by the incredible Todd Stashwick. Captain Shaw is no-nonsense, by the book, highly intelligent and exact. You’ll hate him. From the opening dining room scene, where we properly meet this character, Todd gives us a mesmerising performance. It’s subtle, but you immediately know this Captain isn’t to be trifled with, and to see him standing firm against Trek greats (both in the scene and the story) makes for uncomfortable viewing in the best way. Captain Shaw feels more profound than a no-nonsense, stubborn captain who doesn’t like the shenanigans of ‘heroes’. There’s more going on beneath the surface, and I can’t wait to see how Todd’s performance develops, revealing new layers of the latest Trek captain. Like Marmite, you’re going to love him or hate him… or perhaps hate to love him or love to hate him! Either way, I wonder if he’ll be the same at the end or if there’s more of an arc here.
Visuals and Music
As you would expect from modern Sci-Fi, the visuals are impeccable. You can see the excellent work that has gone into crafting every moment and detail. From the trinkets and memories in Picard’s chateaux to the ships’ exteriors. From the seedy world, Raffi finds herself on, to the design of the bridge and uniforms. It’s all sublime to soak up. You can definitely feel the synergy with Trek of old. But it all feels updated for today’s standard and the progression in the show’s universe.
I want to take a minute to indulge and feel free to skip this paragraph if you’re not a die-hard Trek fan, in the sublime updated LCARS. You get the best view during the end credits, and it’s a wonder. You can see the design progression from that of the original, and it feels like a believable updated UI instead of a whole new design for the sake of it. The crips lines and sweeping curves scream Star Trek, and I love the implementation of curved screens! Needless to say, I want it in my real life.
Then we get the ships. Oh, the ships. The Neo-Constitution class is the perfect hero ship, harking back to some of Roddenberry’s design ethos about where things should be on a ship; you can see those classic lines inspiring this fantastic design. It’s big and bold; it’s new and old. That perhaps is the best way to describe Star Trek Picard Season 3.
Where the music is concerned, you have the wonderful Picard theme blended perfectly with classic Next Generation scoring. What you end up with is a beautiful score that, like all this episode, feels both new and old. The choice of I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire by The Inks as the opening song to shots of beautiful space scenes was inspired. The song continues through the opening action sequence presenting a dichotomy of the song to the visuals, which only increases the scene’s tension. I don’t want to set the world on fire… Terry Matalas has set this Trek geek’s heart on fire with the perfect season opening.
I have Questions
Star Trek Picard Episode 1 has left me with questions like any great mystery should. Unfortunately, to ask any of them here would result in inevitable spoilers! Though, I am hooked. It feels like I’ve grabbed hold of four strands (not lights), and I’m following each one waiting for the intersection that might blow my mind. While many of my questions are about the main plot, even more, are about the new and old characters. I want more; I want to delve deeper into their backstories, build on the existing canon knowledge… and work out just what Captain Shaw was eating (it was blue…).
Terry Matalas and the team have done something incredible with this season of Star Trek Picard, and I have complete confidence that all my questions (save for the blue food) will be answered by the end of the season.
Star Trek Picard Episode 1 Goes Boldly
Star Trek Picard Episode 1 (and I can only assume the remainder of the series) goes back to what makes Star Trek great. While watching, I was reminded of some of my favourite episodes (and movies) from Trek past and couldn’t help but smile the entire time. But Picard is more than a trip down memory lane. It feels matured; it feels new. The balance is spot on. From orchestral notes to characterisation, you feel the connection to Star Trek’s past, but also, at the same time, you see this fresh take. The evolution of characters we Star Trek fans grew up with.
It’s like drinking a cup of tea (Earl Grey, hot, obviously), it could be completely different from what you expect, but it also feels comforting. In Star Trek Picard, you have Next Generation nostalgia combined with a fresh, new direction in a perfect blend of television. This isn’t just good Star Trek; it’s good Sci-Fi and just downright great tv.
Star Trek Picard Episode 1 is available now on Paramount+ or Amazon Prime, with new episodes airing weekly.
No matter your age, you’ll be familiar with both Disney and Pixar. These fantastic studios have created some of the best movies, shorts, and cartoons the world has seen. Consequently, when Disney Dreamlight Valley was released, I knew it would be well received. Furthermore, this is a rare moment where both adults and children can work together to complete a cosy and safe title.
Developed and published by Gameloft SE, this is a life-sim title. What’s more, there are adventure elements, plenty of puzzles, and loads of heartwarming encounters. Therefore, it is perfect for fans of both Disney and Pixar, as well as gamers who enjoy Harvest Moon or Stardew Valley. On top of this, its gentle learning curve makes it the perfect game for older and younger people.
I probably wouldn’t trust a sea witch.
Disney Dreamlight Valley is captivating.
Disney Dreamlight Valley has the potential to be a sickly sweet game that was clichéd and lacking in depth. Fortunately, though, this wasn’t the case. The balance between each personality and the wonderful blend of feel-good dialogue and fun action keeps it lighthearted and enjoyable. What’s more, the life-sim aspects test your creativity and planning, whereas the adventure elements are rewarding and fantastic.
Your avatar has been sent to the Dreamlight Valley after a curse has affected the residents. “The Forgetting” has scared the locals and many of the familiar faces have lost their memories. However, with the help of Merlin, Goofy, Mickey, WALL-E, and more, you can find each special orb and banish the curse forever. Alongside this, you’ll use 4 magical tools to collect resources, attract new friends, and rebuild Dreamlight Valley.
Different realms.
You can’t go wrong with such a dramatic plot. As such, the story ebbs and flows perfectly. Moreover, the drip-fed inclusion of new characters, items, and quests will keep you busy for hours. Alongside this, you are expected to gather resources, build furniture, fish, farm, cook, and entertain people. Additionally, you’ll give each character special tasks to complete as you hang out and improve the valley.
The day-to-day tasks make up the core concept of the action and thankfully, each job is easy to understand and simple to execute. However, opening up unique realms to explore isn’t so straightforward. You are expected to overcome quests, help out each character and collect “Dreamlight”. This invaluable resource is the main currency alongside “Star Coins”. The coins are traded for building upgrades, farming supplies, and so forth. Alternatively, the Dreamlight will remove the “Night Thorns” and unlock each door or expand the village.

Themed realms.
Each new arena increases the map while offering new resources to gather. But that is not all. No, each realm has a specific theme that relates to its owner. Accordingly, fans of each movie will discover fun and cute Easter eggs from their favourite movie or cartoon.
This phenomenal level of detail was appreciated by myself and my family. Furthermore, I enjoyed how each of the character’s personalities impacted the quests on offer. This eye for detail will be appreciated by hardcore fans. Yet, if you aren’t so keen, you’ll still smile at the interesting arena design, the upbeat audio, and the wonderfully written dialogue.
Disney Dreamlight Valley looks amazing.
I’ve mentioned the unique nature of each realm. However, I haven’t alluded to how great every level looks. The developer has done an incredible job of bringing every biome and character to life. Moreover, the blend of ominous and sinister colours and cheery and airy tones is in keeping with the theme and the story. What was also great was the magical edge to every task and how easy it was to navigate the world. With an easy-to-use map and magic wells for fast travel, you can leap from area to area with ease.
Every audio element was a treat. From the incredible acting to the stunning music, it was phenomenal. With familiar songs and incredible soundbites, every character and their story is perfectly portrayed. Alongside this, the fantasy sound effects added magic, and each tool sounded solid. Accordingly, the developers have done a fantastic job with their presentation.
Get your creative juices flowing.
An amazing game for the family.
If you’re a parent, you’ll know the joy and pain of your youngsters playing computer games. Normally, the buttons are too complicated and frustration sets in. Thankfully, Disney Dreamlight Valley is a perfect game to enjoy as a family. With easy-to-execute commands and a simple UI, you can’t go wrong. Furthermore, each task is well laid out and any relevant resources or goods are clearly highlighted.
Life-sim games are time sinks. Unsurprisingly, Disney Dreamlight Valley is no different. With daily tasks to complete, crops to harvest, houses to upgrade, repair, and furnish, friends to play with, and much more, you’ll have more than enough to do. Subsequently, this excellent game will keep adults and children entertained even if the resource gathering reeked of too much grind.
Disney Dreamlight Valley is my guilty pleasure.
Is it wrong that I adored this game? Nah! As such, it quickly became my guilty pleasure, and I cherished assisting each of the cute and adorable personalities. What’s more, the relaxed gameplay, amazing audio, and magical graphics really set the scene. On top of this, it is great if you have children that love Disney or Pixar. Accordingly, I loved it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you remove the curse and save the day? Complete each mission, make new friends, and rebuild the Dreamlight Valley.
