Fun Food Vlog Ideas and How to Execute Them

0

Food is a central part of living in all cultures. It serves as a source of nourishment and provides bonding opportunities for friends and family on different occasions. For this reason, food vlogs with edifying content are quite popular across social media platforms.

Nevertheless, it can get challenging to continuously create engaging food vlogs for your audience. Especially given the mounting competition in the niche.

Tech solutions like CapCut, a free online video editor, can open up your food vlogging journey to a whole new world of possibilities. In this blog, we share examples of such food vlog possibilities as well as how you can use video editing to execute them. Read on to discover how you can emerge from a creative slump with a bang.

Behind the Scenes Videos

Most food vlogs begin in the kitchen with ingredients laid out before the cooking session begins. This approach is great because most people are keen to learn how to make various meals. Nevertheless, you can flip the script by showcasing behind-the-scenes footage of:

  • Grocery shopping sessions highlighting how to select the right ingredients.
  • Ingredient preparation sessions demonstrating how to clean, slice, peel, dice, or measure various ingredients.
  • Bloopers or errors and how you worked through them. They could add a comical effect or help your audience learn from your mistakes.

Notably, you may not be able to film your grocery shopping errands or ingredient preparation as a continuous video. Even in the rare event that you can, the video would be too long.

On CapCut, you can:

  • Merge Clips

You can merge clips of different behind-the-scenes events by importing them all to the CapCut editor in the order you would like them to flow. You can also use CapCut options like animated transitions to harmonize your merged videos.

  • Trim and crop your footage

You can use the trimming tool to cut off unnecessary footage and the crop tool to ensure the video shot focuses on important details like the ingredients.

  • Create a timelapse effect

The CapCut speed tool allows you to speed up certain parts of your videos and create a timelapse effect. You can apply this to video sections where you are performing long self-explanatory tasks like cleaning or chopping. It can help you achieve brevity without necessarily cutting the video.

  • Add voice narration
  • It is near impossible to narrate, film, and shop or chop at the same time. Fortunately, you can record and add voice narrations after you have edited your video footage on CapCut or upload a script and use the text-to-speech tool to create the narration.

Plating Videos

Food presentation is an essential culinary aspect but it is often overshadowed by cooking. You could switch things up a bit for your audience by demonstrating plating techniques and how to select suitable cutlery or crockery for various dishes.

Consider enhancing this type of video by adding music given as plating is less technical and may not require narration.

  • Import your plating video to the editor
  • Click ‘Audio’ on the menu
  • Select a suitable track from the extensive copyright-free CapCut audio library or import a track from your device
  • Once the track is uploaded to the editor, drag the cursors on the audio timeline to sync the track to the video

It is not unusual for food colors and textures to seem less appealing on camera than they actually are. Applying suitable CapCut filters can help you elevate a plate’s appearance from edible to mouth-watering. You can also use the video background remover to ensure the backdrop of your plate is just right.

Recipe Roundups

Recipe roundups are a creative way to:

  • Recap recipe videos that you previously shot.
  • Make it easy for viewers to find meal ideas in a particular niche. For example, a barbecue recipe round-up could benefit a viewer planning a barbecue.

The CapCut video editor will come in handy here too. It has tools to enable you to:

  • Merge the different recipe videos into one round-up video (as we have outlined above).
  • Add text highlights or subtitles to each video to make it easy for viewers to pick out ingredients or prep instructions. You can find text editing options by clicking the ‘T’ icon on the menu.

Exotic Food Reviews

Source: CapCut.com

There are only so many ways you can cook a steak or make colorful vegetarian dishes before you begin to run out of ideas. Instead of trying to reinvent the culinary wheel, consider exploring other cultures and their culinary delights. It will be years before you can exhaust the variety that runs from gnocchi and balaclava to jollof and tiramisu.

Better still, you do not have to be an expert in all of these dishes. You can invite food vloggers from different countries to work on these videos with you.

Worried about the filming logistics? Don’t be.

You and your guest blogger can, for example, film separately and merge the videos using CapCut.

Alternatively, you could create a side-by-side comparison video where you both attempt to cook the same exotic dish using the same recipe.

  • Import both videos to the CapCut editor
  • Tap on the first video to highlight it
  • Select ‘Edit’ on the menu
  • Click ‘Adjust’
  • Resize and position the video to fit half the screen
  • Repeat this for the second video
  • Tap the checkmark to apply the changes

Another silver lining is that you both can have creative control during the editing process thanks to the CapCut collaborative editing provision. It allows you to both edit the shared project, share feedback, and export it to your preferred platforms.

In Conclusion

It is a marvel just how many ideas you can explore when you have tools like CapCut to help you overcome creative barriers. Now that you have gotten a glimpse into what it can do, let your ideas roam free.

Revolutionising the Betting Industry with Mobile Technology: The Future of Betting Apps

0

Smartphone technology has advanced to the point where we now have small computers in our pockets. They can do most things our computers can do, most of which are enabled by apps. If you need to do something, there is certainly an app for it in the rich ecosystems of the Google Play Store and Apple App store. A segment that has been growing in recent years is the betting app segment. Online sportsbooks and betting companies have created apps that allow players to place bets conveniently, making betting on their apps very popular. Betting apps have revolutionised online betting, but they are also evolving. In this article, we look at how both are happening.

Convenience

Betting apps have made it convenient for players to place their bets as long as they have an internet connection. Anyone with a smartphone can download an app from their favourite betting company, deposit funds and place a bet in five to ten minutes. When choosing an online betting app, it is vital to ensure it is secure, fast and reliable. Players can pick from a list of apps developed by the biggest, most trusted, and most reliable betting companies such as Novibet with stellar reputations for fairness, customer support, and numerous features.

The convenience also extends to the number of features players have access to. Access to real-time odds allows players to track changes to betting odds to know when to place bets. The ability to place live bets is another example of a feature players love and use all the time. Players can place wagers on events and outcomes after an event or game has started, ensuring they do not miss out on placing a bet regardless of a sport’s progression.

Deals and Bonuses

The online betting industry is very competitive, and there are only so many customers that betting companies can onboard. A common solution for beating competition and onboarding as many players as possible is deals and bonuses. Betting companies apply them in numerous ways throughout their apps. A common bonus for new players is a deposit bonus, where players get extra funds in their accounts after completing a deposit.

Another is free bets, where betting companies give players a free bet up to a specific amount. For example, a betting company might give a player £10 to place bets with odds of over 2.0. With enough research, players can leverage these bets to increase their winnings. These bonuses usually come with wagering requirements you need to know about before using them.

Boosted odds have become popular in recent years. A betting company might increase the odds of certain events and outcomes to entice players to place bets on them.

Security

Security is crucial when dealing with personal and banking details like betting companies do all the time. Betting apps now encrypt customer data to transmit it securely and ensure it is safe. Some use tokens instead of payment details like credit card numbers to ensure no one apart from their customers has this data.

These are great steps in the right direction as there have been some issues with customer payments, scams and lost funds in the past.

Better User Experience

We have learned a lot about user experience in the last decade and a half as apps have become more important to users. Betting companies have taken note, and the future of betting apps is one where they have a better user experience and streamlined user flows.

A complex app that makes it difficult for users to find the games, events and bets they are looking for provides an experience that makes players leave and never return. This experience also extends to deposits and withdrawals.

Players want to be able to deposit and withdraw their funds conveniently, using their preferred currencies, and with short turnaround times. After all, no one wants to wait days or weeks for their withdrawals to be approved.

Seamless Online and App Experiences

As with other areas of their online experiences, players now expect seamless omnichannel experiences. They want to be able to place their bets on any compatible device and then follow those bets on portable devices like their smartphones. The future of betting apps involves providing a seamless experience regardless of the devices they use.

Players want to be able to place bets, deposit and withdraw funds, and follow their favourite games on their computers and smartphones for the best experience. The good news is that decoupled and headless app and software development practices have made this much easier. As long as there is data and an API, the player can access a betting platform on any device they wish as betting companies have already built these experiences.

Live Game Streams and Betting

Live bets have become incredibly popular in recent years. They allow players to place bets after seeing some of the game and having an idea of the likely outcome of the game or certain events. For example, players might see that one football team is dominating the other and thus has a higher probability of winning. They can place that bet while the game continues on any device they use to log into their betting accounts.

For some time now, betting companies have been giving an overview of how an event or game is going on their mobile apps. However, some have started incorporating audio and video broadcasts to make the experience more immersive. We expect to see more live game feeds on betting apps as they continue working with teams and broadcasters.

Additional Payment Options

People want choice, especially when depositing funds into their betting accounts. They want to be sure that the app they have downloaded supports their preferred payment method, whatever that may be.

Therefore, betting companies should provide the more popular payment options alongside the ones their customers expect. We are already seeing this with betting apps that integrate region- or country-specific payment options.

Betting apps have become popular due to their convenience, security and user experience. They have changed how players view sports betting, but they are still undergoing numerous changes to provide an even better user and customer experience.

Review: Turtle Beach Stealth Pro headset

The Turtle Beach Stealth Pro headset is a jaw-dropping accessory. Moreover, it firmly puts the company back where they belong. Recently, Turtle Beach has dominated the lower to mid-price point. This is except for the incredible 600 and 700 Stealth 2 MAX headphones. However, this latest creation proves that they are back to their best.

These multi-platform headphones are designed with either Xbox or PlayStation in mind. For the purpose of this review, I was presented with the latter option. Yet, if you game on PC, Nintendo Switch, or you simply enjoy listening to music, this device has your back. These stunningly comfortable over-ear headphones create a game-changing experience. You are taken to the next level thanks to the powerful drivers, ANC, and customisable settings. Alongside this, it has 2 battery packs and several connection options. Consequently, it is versatile and designed for long gaming sessions.

What’s in the box of the Turtle Beach Stealth Pro headset?

  • This obnoxiously large box begs to be opened. Additionally, the heavy and strong packaging keeps its contents safe. Furthermore, it can be recycled, and it’s irresistibly upmarket in appearance.
  • The Turtle Beach Stealth Pro headset is instantly desirable. With lay-flat yokes, plush leatherette earcups, and a range of tactile buttons, it begs to be used.
  • The detachable TruSpeak microphone can be attached with ease.
  • Keep on gaming thanks to the pair of rechargeable battery packs.
  • The futuristic wireless terminal doubles up as a battery charging dock. If you charge a battery for 15 minutes, you can enjoy up to 3 hours of juice. What’s more, you can charge other devices from the additional port.
  • 2 USB-C charging cables are provided, but any standard C-cable can be used instead.
  • Understand the fundamentals with the basic user guide. For further details, a PDF version can be downloaded.
  • Keep your headphones safe with the velvet bag.

Technical aspects.

If you are purchasing a mid or lower-range headset, your expectations are set accordingly. However, premium products must strive to deliver exceptional performance. Thankfully, the Turtle Beach Stealth Pro headset is unbelievably brilliant. Therefore, every element is impressive and the audio technology is the best I’ve experienced.

The beastly 50mm Nanoclear drivers create a rich and powerful soundscape. Subsequently, every game, movie, or song comes to life. Alongside this, the ANC delivers an immersive experience unlike any other! The four internal microphones reduce noise levels by up to 25 dB. Accordingly, you can game without unnecessary distractions. Alternatively, you can accentuate ambient sounds to allow the outside sounds in. As such, from the moment you are set up, you won’t want to wear another set of headphones.

Alongside this, the TruSpeak boom microphone is incredible. Thanks to the noise-cancelling technology, you’ll enjoy crystal-clear communication. This amazing microphone cuts out up to 97% of background noise. Furthermore, there was no crackling or interference, no matter the platform or my connection of choice.

Connectivity.

Whenever you game, you want a lag-free experience. Thankfully, the Turtle Beach Stealth Pro headset offers low-fidelity audio via dual connections. Consequently, you can use the lightning-fast 5.1 Bluetooth option or the 2.4 GHz wireless base. Whichever option you choose, they both deliver pinpoint accurate audio.

Alongside this, the dual connection allows you to listen to music, Discord, or take calls whilst you are gaming. As such, you never miss a beat. Furthermore, this upmarket device allows you to enjoy your gaming session while seamlessly letting you carry on with your day-to-day activities.

Build quality.

As expected, this premium device has phenomenal build quality. With plush leatherette earcups, a durable steel-reinforced headband, and soft touch but tactile buttons, this looks and feels great. Alongside this, the microphone port can be covered when not in use. As such, it retains its sleek finish. Furthermore, the hidden battery compartment is easy to access, and the battery is slender and lightweight.

Talking of weight, the Turtle Beach Stealth Pro headset is noticeably heavy. Though this may disappoint some gamers, they are reassuringly robust. Moreover, weight isn’t a problem during lengthy gaming sessions. Additionally, the earcups are cool and the memory foam padding is spectacle-user friendly. Accordingly, these premium headphones are perfect for casual or hardcore users.

The app.

All the bells and whistles impressed me. However, the app was a thing of beauty! This free-to-download software makes it simple to alter your settings on the fly. Moreover, you can remap the audio wheel, switch on superhuman hearing, and change the EQ settings with ease. Alongside this, it is a cinch to get started and any mistakes can be undone at the touch of a button.

This incredible piece of software is so straightforward that any technophobe can master it. Thanks to the easy-to-navigate UI, and the well-labelled tabs, you cannot go wrong. Furthermore, you can create up to 10 custom builds that can be easily selected. Therefore, you can switch your settings as quickly as you change your genre of game.

Is the Turtle Beach Stealth Pro headset worth it?

Investing your hard-earned cash into a premium device can be daunting. No one likes to feel that they are wasting their cash, and getting quality and great value for money is a must. Luckily, though the Turtle Beach Stealth Pro headset has a hefty price point of £279.99, it is money well spent. This incredible headset is a game-changer. Consequently, if gaming, music, or movies are your passion, you won’t want to miss out.

With an amazing range of tones and a deep and rich bass, it delivers precise sound. Moreover, the excellent ANC and transparency options create both an immersive and an open soundscape. Alongside this, the exquisite build quality will impress you. The comfortable earcups are cool and spectacle friendly. Additionally, the lay-flat yokes and detachable microphone retain a sleek and non-gaming appearance. As such, these headphones are some, if not the best headphones I’ve tested, and they are worth every penny you invest. Therefore, I can easily recommend that you buy them here!

(More information on Turtle Beach can be found here!)

The Turtle Beach Stealth Pro headset has been awarded the Movies Games and Tech gold award.

Halo Fans Deserve Better.

0

Remember Halo? Yea, me too. After a string of bad news, delays, missing features, and radio silence, Halo fans deserve better.

Remember Halo?

Halo was the first gaming franchise I fell in love with. It began while watching my brothers play Halo: Combat Evolved together as they fought the flood. I thought it was some kind of horror game, but instead of hiding my eyes, I couldn’t look away. I was only a kid then, but everything about it spoke to me. The world, the lore, the characters, I was enthralled with every aspect of its design.

I was a shy kid. Didn’t speak much, and I had very little friends. Reflecting on it now, that’s probably why I related so much to the green space man fighting all of these aliens. He, like me, didn’t say much, but his bravery and courage shook me to my core. He inspired me, and most of all, he was my friend.

Just like Superman, Master Chief was my hero. I felt like I was there with him as I played the original trilogy of Halo games. We fought side-by-side as we both explored this alien ring-world together in Halo 1. I had his back as we found ourselves on the covenant holy city called high charity in Halo 2. And we both stood brave together, as we saved the entire galaxy from the halo rings being lit in Halo 3.

Even as I aged, my love for Halo and Master Chief never left me. When Xbox announced Halo 4 during E3 2011, I was left speechless. At that time, Bungie had moved on from the franchise and the trilogy had ended 4 years prior. As far as I knew up to that point, Master Chief was gone.

Yet here came a newcomer to the series, 343 Industries, the studio tasked with handling one of the most beloved IP’s in the gaming world. Everyone was skeptical, including me. Nobody could have predicted the downward spiral that was to come.

Halo’s Rocky Road.

343 Industries have done some good things. I enjoyed the Halo 4 narrative, Halo 5 multiplayer gave me 100s of hours of fun, and Halo Infinite was serviceable. But there in lies the issue, it’s all a big jumble of “just okay.”

I can talk for weeks about how much I love Bungie’s Halo trilogy, how each games nuances are so fantastic and still amazing to this day. This isn’t just nostalgia talk either, as Bungie pushed the boundaries of the first-person-shooter genre. Halo 3 launching with a fully functional campaign, multiplayer, and innovative additions such as forge and theater is something unheard of in comparison to todays gaming landscape.

Halo used to be genre defining, it used to set the standard for what a first-person-shooter should be. Now, Halo can’t even launch with all the features day one.

Theres a significant stain on each of 343’s games, that tarnish each of their legacies. Halo 4 changed the entire art-style and look of everything you grew up loving about Bungie’s trilogy, which confused and angered all the hardcore Halo fans. Not to mention, the horrendous call of duty rip-off multiplayer killed the competitive halo scene.

Halo: the master chief collection. Enough said.

Halo 5 without a doubt has the worst story in the entire series, dare I say one of the worst narratives in video games. For a franchise so known by amazing stories, Halo 5 was a tough pill to swallow. Not to mention the game launched with content missing like forge and big team battle. It was also loaded with micro-transactions.

Halo Infinite… man. We waited 6 years for Halo Infinite. This was the game that was supposed to bring Halo back. The old art-style returned, and there seemed to be a real focus from 343. Everyone in the Halo community felt that 343 really wanted to knock this one out of the park.

It wasn’t all bad, but everything just seemed half-baked. The campaign was good, but it’s clear that so much was cut. With only one biome in the open world, it seemed that infinite still needed two years at the minimum to cook. The multiplayer launched with the least amount of content I’ve ever seen for a shooter. Forge wasn’t at launch, campaign co-op wasn’t at launch, and couch co-op split screen wasn’t in the game even though previous 343 studios head Bonnie Ross said specifically that it would be. (https://www.pcgamer.com/halo-games-will-always-have-split-screen-going-forward-says-343-industries-founder/)

As a massive fan of Halo, I’ve consistently scratched my head during the 343 era, often asking myself “what are they doing over there?”

Halo was once a juggernaut, but now most would laugh at you if you even dared putting Halo and juggernaut in the same sentence. Faith in 343 is at an all time low. If there’s anyone in the Halo community that still believes in 343, you can probably count them on two hands. This is a billion dollar IP owned by one of the largest companies in the world. Why are we even having this conversation?

Microsoft’s Mismanagement of Gaming Royalty.

Game development is incredibly difficult and a string of bad launches and bad press should never just fall on a studio. Publishers should always receive a healthy amount of the blame as well.

If you are the publisher of a billion dollar game, it’s your job to assure the game is in the hands of the best creators possible and that they have any resources that they need. If there’s something they need, you give it to them. Something isn’t working? You fix it.

Nintendo’s management of their core franchises is the gold standard. Mario has been relevant for 40+ years and still we are receiving genre-defining experiences. Mario hasn’t lost an ounce of mindshare, and in moments where it sunk a little, Nintendo did what was necessary to bring it back up.

At Nintendo’s lowest moment after the Wii U, they picked themselves up and prepped for what was next. They needed a strong launch lineup of exclusives to push Nintendo Switch sales, so what did they do? They didn’t go out and purchase big name second party games or publishers, they gave the Zelda and Mario team the resources necessary to create masterpieces. Two of their oldest IP were carrying the switch hardware 30 years after their creation with Breath of the wild and Super Mario Odyssey.

It seemed Microsoft was primed to do the same with Halo Infinite being the big launch title for the Xbox Series X|S. The first Halo game to launch with a new system since Halo: Combat Evolved. It was crucial for 343 to nail this one. Instead, we got a disastrous gameplay reveal and a year delay. Even after the year delay, the game launched with over half its features missing.

The Covid pandemic was still raging on and had an industry wide impact, but Halo infinite was in development long before the pandemic started. As seen below, thanks to reporting from Bloombergs Jason Schreier, Halo Infinite was having development trouble long before Covid.

So, how do we fix it?

Where Halo Goes From Here.

Earlier this year there was big changes at 343. Long time Studio Head Bonnie Ross announced she was leaving the studio for personal reasons and the majority of the campaign team was fired:

There’s now three studio heads at 343, and while I hope they can turn the franchise around, I’m left with no faith in the studio.

The path forward is that hopefully with all the studio changes, Halo can finally get back on track, but I think I speak for all Halo fans when I say we’re out of patience.

I hope things work out, but in my opinion, other studios should get a chance to work on Halo. It’s no easy task for a studio who has been working on Halo since its conception to try something else, but the mismanagement of Halo cannot continue further. If anything, letting 343 stay on as a support studio while another team takes over main development responsibility could work out.

343 have proved they don’t understand Halo, nor that they can launch a complete experience that lives up to players expectations. Some may think this is being harsh, but they have had plenty of chances. Halo is Xbox’s most important IP, and it has to be great.

Closing

Although I have been rather cynical here, I just want to express that I want what is best for Halo. I speak only as a concerned fan of the series. I want Halo to be great, and to be the juggernaut it used to be but recently it’s been anything but.

If these leadership changes at 343 lead to Halo getting back on track, then I’m all for it. I sincerely wish 343 nothing but the best.

That being said, if Xbox sees 343 can’t handle this, that they can’t produce a title to the quality level gamers expect, then a new team needs to take over. Because after all, the franchises health is all that matters.

Halo means everything to me, Master Chief means everything to me. I want them to shine, and be the industry leader like I know they are. After all, Master Chief is my hero. I hope we can get there soon.

Were it so easy…

Quick and Easy Social Media Channel Boosting Tips

There are many posts and articles about social media channel-boosting tips. But they can be long, confusing and boring. But don’t worry. Here are some of the most immediate and effective creator methods you can include in your daily social posting and content creation schedule.

Be Patient and Gradually Grow Your Audience

Your follower count will grow if you create consistently. Over time, you will see major differences. But even every day, you will see more and more users following you, signing up for notifications, and subscribing. However, audiences are attracted to large numbers, so using tricks such as a Twitch viewer bot can help you attain additional followers starting out. The key is patience, and your audience will gradually grow to a resectable size. No one gets a million followers overnight.

Stay Focused and Genuine

It’s vital that you have something of a niche these days. So whether you want to be a video game social media influencer, the most viewed GTA Online player, or create tips and tricks videos for The Sims 4, you need something to focus on. This makes it much easier to find content to create and stay authentic in your chosen niche. You can also boost your numbers and credibility by collaborating with other established and talented creators in your niche.

Social Media Channel Boosting Requires Engagement

Content is key when it comes to your social channels. But you also need to engage with your users. An Instagram audience won’t return to your channel if you don’t use hashtags well, respond to comments or messages, or share engaging content. All of your content must engage in some way. For most social channels, this means providing at least 80% of content that informs, helps your audience, or is entertaining. The other 20% of content is for promotion.

Use a Multimedia Approach

Even the best-written posts won’t engage with an audience if that’s all you do. Social media users want their information in various formats these days. And some may only stick to one. So you must mix it up when it comes to your brand. For instance, posting text-only tweets is fine, with correct hashtag usage. But Facebook users will prefer an accompanying image. And you can boost your audience by starting a YouTube channel with helpful and engaging videos.

Think Immediate And Snappy

Your content needs to grab people while scrolling, so it needs to be immediately engaging. Images and videos are one way to achieve this. With videos in particular, try to frontload them with interesting shots or graphics. Text-only posts can still be engaging, but it’s best to keep them snappy and start with an interesting point that will encourage people to read on. With hyperlinks, a free Bitly account could be worth looking into in order to shorten long links and increase clicks. Make sure that links are accompanied by text that explains what the content is about.

Don’t Shy Away from Cross-Posting

Some creators try not to cross-post because it can look “spammy”. But cross-posting is a genuine method of increasing these numbers. Think about it for a second. Why only post to one social media channel when there are millions you can reach on another? The trick is to learn what to post on each social media platform and edit or tailor your cross-posts for those channels. For example, even the language you use between Facebook and Reddit is different.

Summary

You can try these methods of social media channel boosting; create niche-specific content to gradually grow, try to engage with your audience on many levels, and learn how to cross-post.

Review: REPLIKATOR

REPLIKATOR is a procedurally generated sci-fi title that’ll make you pull your hair out. Thanks to its cruel creatures and lashings of traps, you will die repeatedly. Furthermore, this testing experience will make you yelp as you throw caution to the wind and try to bum-rush each stage. Consequently, if you lose patience and your head, you are guaranteed to fail. However, every death gives you the opportunity to come back stronger. As such, though you may fail, there is always a silver lining.

Developed by R-Games and Meridian4 and published by Ratalaika Games, this is a top-down sci-fi shooter. What’s more, it has rogue-like elements. Therefore, it is undeniably tough, and death is horribly unfair. Yet, the excruciatingly cruel gameplay generates a sense of reward whenever there is a fleeting moment of success.

REPLIKATOR demands that you grab your ammo and keep shooting.
Grab the energy and keep shooting.

REPLIKATOR tells a worryingly convincing tale.

I’d hardly call modern living a futuristic haven. However, there are daily reports of the negative impact that AI is having on our lives. Whether it is taking over our jobs, or we experience a “Skynet” overlord, it is pretty terrifying. Unfortunately, REPLIKATOR delivers a worryingly convincing version of events.

You control a hero who must outrun and destroy an all-seeing and all-powerful AI. This soulless invention is hell-bent on destroying humanity. Yet, for all its negatives, there are some minor positives. The futuristic technology allows you to be reborn anytime you die. Moreover, it can generate new weapons, perks, and implants to help you on your way. However, there is the obvious side effect of death to worry about, but why let that stop you from having a good time?

Procedurally generated gameplay.

I adore a procedurally generated world. The continual mystery is a wonderful element that keeps me coming back for more. If you then combine this with the rogue-like genre, you have a tough but intriguing recipe that will be tantalising for fans of the genre. Alongside this, the more you play, the easier things become.

Every time you die, or you defeat a main boss, you return to the central space station. Here, you may spend your resources to improve the ship and your hero. Moreover, you may swap between 4 characters to find the perfect match for your play style. On top of this, you can select perks, unlock new gear, and arm yourself with special items. As such, the more time you invest, the better your hero becomes.

A green and slimy blob wants to kill you.
That looks like it’ll kick your ass.

Exploring an unknown world.

The procedurally generated map is an excellent mechanic. No matter how many times I played the game, I never knew what to expect. Furthermore, the large roster of monsters and aliens will keep you on your toes. Alongside this, there are spikes to avoid, barrels to destroy, and acid-filled aliens to evade. As such, this isn’t a mindless shooter. Instead, you must plan which weapon to use and how you wish to stay alive.

Each level is set on a space station. The labyrinthine world is easy to navigate thanks to the excellent map. However, a fog of war shrouds each stage into a mysterious experience. As you open each door, you’ll encounter plenty of risky moments. Yet, by using the right weapons and perks, you’ll annihilate everything in front of you.

The aim of each stage is simple. Clear the rooms, gather as much ammo, health, and cubes as you can carry, and find the terminal key. With this in hand, you may exit the stage and move on to the next endeavour. Yet, this is easier said than done as large monsters stand between you and victory.

REPLIKATOR is a pixelated masterpiece.

I love retro games! Accordingly, a pixelated masterpiece will always float my boat. Thanks to the basic but attractive graphics, this simple affair is great to look at. Additionally, each of your foes has a unique finish, and the gameplay is wonderfully smooth. On top of this, the UI is easy to navigate, and the animation is rudimentary but perfectly serviceable.

A fast-paced and dramatic game needs a strong soundtrack. Thankfully, REPLIKATOR is unbelievably hard-hitting. The synth soundtrack is complemented by futuristic sound effects. Furthermore, every weapon has a unique noise and the explosions are off the chart. Subsequently, this loud game keeps you on your toes at all times.

Don't forget to upgrade your character.
Make sure to upgrade your character.

Excellent controls.

If you struggle with top-down shooters, you may be worried about playing this. Well, worry not as the developers are kind people. They have incorporated some excellent accessibility options to make this easier to play. Moreover, a brilliant tutorial and 3 difficulty settings help to level the playing field. On top of this, once you nail the fundamentals, you’ll slay every creature and alien you encounter.

Thanks to the rogue-like elements, REPLIKATOR is addictive and tough to put down. Alongside this, there are loads of blueprints to find, masses of creatures to destroy, and a range of big bosses to take down. Additionally, you can select from 4 characters with individual strengths and weaknesses. As such, there is plenty to see and do and loads of reasons to return.

REPLIKATOR is an excellent indie title.

Ratalaika Games publishes some of the quickest and easiest games you’ll ever see. However, REPLIKATOR isn’t one of them. This tough title will push you to your limits. Moreover, the procedurally generated mechanics, hidden rooms, and mountains of collectables will keep you coming back for more. My only complaint is that the tough nature of the action can be disheartening, even if death is a blessing in disguise. Despite my complaints, I still loved it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you stop the AI from destroying humanity? Grab a weapon, pick up each power up, and slay everything that moves.

Backgammon Basics: An Introduction to the Game

0

The game of Backgammon has been a beloved pastime for thousands of years, captivating players with its unique blend of strategy, chance, and competitive play. The game’s simplicity and depth have endured across generations, making it as appealing today as it was in ancient times. If you’ve ever wondered how to play Backgammon, this guide will introduce you to the basic rules and strategies, as well as the resources you’ll need to start playing.

Equipment

Before you can play Backgammon, you’ll need a Backgammon set or, for a more convenient alternative, play the game online. If you choose to purchase a set, it will include a board divided into four quadrants, each with six triangular points or pips, totaling 24 points. The board also features a central divider called the bar. Each player begins with fifteen checkers in their color, two dice, a dice cup, and a doubling cube, used to increase the stakes of the game.

The Game Board

img

Understanding the game board is fundamental to learning Backgammon. The points are numbered starting from 24 in your opponent’s home board and ending at 1 in your own home board. Players move their checkers in opposite directions, following a horseshoe path around the board. The ultimate goal of the game is to move all your checkers to your home board, then remove them entirely in a process called bearing off.

Rolling and Moving

Each turn begins with a roll of the dice, which determines how many points a player can move their checkers. The checkers always move forward toward the player’s home board. Players can choose to move one checker twice or two checkers separately, depending on the dice roll. An essential rule to remember is that a checker can only land on an open point—a point not occupied by two or more opposing checkers.

Hitting and Entering

If a checker lands on a point occupied by a single opposing checker (a blot), it’s hit and moved to the bar. The player whose checker was hit must re-enter that checker onto their opponent’s home board before they can move any other pieces.

Bearing Off

Once all players’ checkers are in their home board, they can start bearing off or removing their checkers from the board. This is done by rolling a number that corresponds to a point where a checker resides. However, if no checkers can bear off according to the rolled number, the player must make a legal move using a checker on a higher-numbered point.

Doubling

A unique aspect of Backgammon is the doubling cube. A player can propose to double the stakes at any point in the game before their roll. The opponent can either accept and continue playing with doubled stakes or resign and lose the match. Ownership of the doubling cube switches with each accepted proposal, allowing for multiple redoubles and increasing stakes.

Winning the Game

Winning in Backgammon can occur in several ways. If a player has removed all their checkers and their opponent has removed at least one, the player wins the current stake. If the opponent hasn’t removed any checkers, they lose a gammon, and the stakes are doubled. If the opponent still has one or more checkers on the bar or in the opponent’s home board, they lose Backgammon and triple the current stakes.

Exploring More Board Games

img

If you enjoy Backgammon and wish to explore similar games, there’s a wealth of strategic board games available. Traditional board games like Chess, Go, or Checkers also involve strategic play and head-to-head competition. Exploring these alternatives can add variety to your gaming experience and broaden your strategic understanding.

Overall, Backgammon is a timeless game of strategy and chance, rich in history and still vibrant today. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a newcomer, the game offers endless fascination. Understanding the basic rules is just the beginning; with each game, you’ll uncover new layers of strategy and complexity. So gather your equipment and prepare for a journey into the world of Backgammon—a game that has enthralled players for millennia and continues to do so today. Happy gaming!

Review – Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengance of the Slayer

Yeah, that’s the full title. I don’t know what ‘Terminal Aftermath’ means either. For brevity’s sake, we’ll just call it Slayers X. It began back in the distant year of 1998, scribbled down in a high schooler’s notebook, and has now been released onto the information super highway. That means Slayers X has technically been in development for twenty four years. Ten years longer than Duke Nukem Forever. Big Z Studios Inc. should get on the phone to Guinness. Or not, as the developer, ‘Zane’, is a fictional character from the game Hypnospace Outlaw. Ah well.

Fake or not, this lengthy development period makes Slayers X feel like something of a time capsule. It encapsulates the more ridiculous parts of the late nineties and early 2000s. Paired with that is a respect for shooters of the time and Slayers X slots into the ‘Boomer Shooter‘ genre nicely. Though, given the year it supposedly started development, I guess it would be more of a ‘Millennial Shooter’.

Slayers X - Shooting Enemies At An Amusement Park

Smells Like Slayer Spirit

Slayers X opens with a scene straight out of a music video. Our hero, Zane, trains with his master while Zane’s girlfriend talks into a phone with a voice that indicates she’s dead inside. The cutscene is deliberately apeing that 90s art style, where 3D was fashionable but the tech wasn’t there to support it. So everyone looks like pixelated plasticine. It’s great. Then Zane’s apartment gets blown up, along with his mother. Which is less great. It does explain the aforementioned ‘vengance’ though.

Zane’s wrath is directed at the ‘Psykos’, a needle-loving group of purple jerks. Killing them is super entertaining. We begin with dual pistols, a personal favourite of mine, but steadily move through the usual suspects, ending with the rocket launcher. With the possible exception of the pistols, the weapons all sound and feel great. What’s more, enemies react appropriately to being hit. Pair it with a soundtrack that ramps up when enemies appear and you’ve got an exciting time. Slayers X knows how to get the blood pumping.

It also has some clever spins on the usual weapon line-up. The shotgun, for example, was a favourite of mine. Rather than firing boring old shells, it fires out broken glass. Leaving aside how painful it would be to reload, this is a genius idea. Glass is gathered by breaking windows, so as long as you’re near a building, you still have ammo. That saved my bacon a few times. The other big trick up Slayers X‘s sleeve is ‘Hack Blood’, which is a magical green force than you can fire out of the impractically designed S-Blade. Oh yeah, we’re a hacker as well because of course we are.

Slayers X - An Example Of A Cutscene

Slaying In The Name

In case you forgot, this game began as scribblings in a fictional sixteen year-old’s notebook. That brings us neatly on to the humour. I’d say that Slayers X is funny, but there are a number of asterisks attached to that. The funniest parts for me were the abrupt sentences (for example, Zane’s mum is pronounced dead in a sudden news report) and the childish taunts from Zane himself. It feels like a teenager on voice chat. The second half of the game descends into a stream of poop jokes, though. Fitting for the teenage vibe, but if your tastes aren’t scatalogical, then it does tend to grate a wee bit. Still, when it got away from that, it did give me a good few chuckles.

The poop spills over into the combat too. A major enemy type is a big poop that spits corn. Edmund McMillen would be proud. The enemy variety is actually pretty good. Basic purple guys with guns give way to giggling clown heads and werewolf clones of your late girlfriend. There’s even a big floating lad that looks like a Cacodemon decided to accessorise. It’s nice, but the variety does highlight how dull the scenery looks in comparison. The occasional grass areas are a standout but most of the time it’s gunmetal grey or depressing brown. It’s a curse of the chosen artstyle, I think.

Same with everything looking very boxy. I can’t mark it down too much as that’s what the genre demands but it’s a shame the boat wasn’t pushed out a bit more. In fact, a few old issues were trapped in this time capsule. There are occasional platforming sections, for example, which feel clunky and frustrating. The final boss is a particular thorn in the side for this. What’s more, the AI is pretty thick. You have to be right next to them for them to agro, even if you’ve just shot a handful of glass into their mate’s face. Given the high range of the pistols, it made fights very easy to clear without anyone noticing me.

Slayers X - Firing The Hack Blood Laser Beam

Black Hole Slayer

It’s worth re-iterating that nothing about Slayers X is meant to be taken seriously. It’s a spin-off starring a character that could be the crystallised essence of the early 2000s. Take the spelling, for example. Discounting the typo of ‘Vengeance’ in the title, a good number of signs were misspelled throughout. It honestly added to the whole ‘sixteen-year-old high school fever dream’ feel. Hell, the final boss is a giant flying face that you fight with a big green laser beam while it talks about having sex with your mum. We’re clearly not on planet sensible here. It’s a world dreamt up by a teenager in the late nineties, after all, who has little to no idea how the world works.

All Slayers X really needed to nail was the moment-to-moment gameplay and it succeeded. The guns are fun to use, the enemies are fun to shoot and it has a big green laser beam that you can pull out when you’re in a bind. That meant it could sit there and revel in its own childish cheese. Slayers X sat down in ’98 and refused to grow up, leading to a chaotic explosion of broken glass and laser beams. As time capsules go, this one isn’t half bad. Better than a Furby and a copy of Definitely Maybe, anyway.

Review: JLab Go Charge Wireless Mouse

Using a touch screen to scroll and select items is all well and good. However, it isn’t as accurate as a mouse and dirty fingers make a mess of your display. Consequently, a good quality mouse will always be appealing. This is where the JLab Go Charge Wireless Mouse comes into play.

This sleek and attractive-looking device is the perfect travelling companion. If you have to commute or work away from home, you don’t want to take cumbersome gear with you. Accordingly, a small but perfectly formed mouse has to be top of your list. Additionally, a great keyboard like the JLab Go Wireless Keyboard is also a fine idea.

This excellent device is lightweight and hard-wearing. Moreover, it has silent buttons and an accurate central wheel, and it can be adjusted for right or left-handed users. As such, it is a user-friendly purchase that will improve your mobile setup.

What’s in the box of the JLab Go Charge Wireless Mouse?

  • The small packaging is attractive and strong. Furthermore, it highlights key selling points and is fully recyclable.
  • The JLab Go Charge Wireless Mouse is protected by blue tissue paper. This small touch enhances the professional finish while preventing unnecessary scratches. The refined design is pleasant to look at and the buttons are comfortably placed.
  • The USB-C charging cable is small but suitable for the task at hand.
  • The user guide highlights the fundamentals.

Technical aspects.

Whenever I use a wireless mouse, I worry about connectivity issues. Thankfully, the JLab Go Charge Wireless Mouse performed admirably. You may choose between a USB-C wireless dongle or 2 Bluetooth 5.0 connections. Subsequently, you can connect up to 3 devices for a seamless transition between each one.

Another concern is the DPI performance of your device. Depending on the task, you may require a smooth and steady input. Alternatively, you may wish for a lightning-fast cursor speed for gaming. Whatever you decide, the JLab Go Charge Wireless Mouse will keep up. Thanks to the adjustable settings, you can change the DPI sensitivity from 800 to 1600. As a result, there is an option to keep every person happy.

Build quality.

I’m a fan of mechanical devices. As such, the monotonous “click, click, click” sound doesn’t bother me. However, others may find the repetitive noise tiresome. Thankfully, the JLab Go Charge Wireless Mouse tackles this problem. With silent click buttons and a smooth gliding motion, this is as quiet as a hunting owl.

Alongside this, there are 6 buttons to choose from and a well-considered connectivity switch. As such, it is simple to flit between Bluetooth 5.0 and the wireless 2.4 GHz connections. Furthermore, the 10m wireless range is suitable for the average working setup.

This light mouse is ergonomically designed and is comfortable to use. Moreover, the ability to use it with either hand is a bonus. To maintain the sleek finish, JLab has hidden the USB dongle in the underside of the mouse. This was an excellent choice as it maintains the professional look, whilst keeping the dongle safe.

Is the JLab Go Charge Wireless Mouse worth it?

There are some excellent wireless gaming mice available. ROCCAT is my go-to option, but they are larger, heavier, and more expensive. As such, if you wish to have a useful and affordable device that is a Jack of all trades, then look no further. The JLab Go Charge Wireless Mouse feels nice and looks professional. What’s more, the silent clicks and excellent DPI sensitivity tick many boxes. As such, I liked this device and I recommend that you buy it here!

Review: AMVR Leather Face Cushion (PICO 4)

The AMVR Leather Face Cushion for PICO 4 (N4FC1) is the best answer to a problem faced by many PICO 4 owners. How to make the headset more comfortable to wear.

Installation

The most important factor for any accessory is that it’s simple to use, won’t cause damage, and is quick to install. If you can get it right, you’ll have a great product on your hands. The facemask from AMVR takes advantage of one of my favourite features of the PICO 4 – magnets! Installation is honestly as simple as pulling the stock face cover off and letting this one drop into place, snapping securely with the guide pegs and magnets. It’s beautifully simple.

Design and Comfort

There aren’t too many ways you can design a face cover for a VR headset; you’re bound by the constraints of the device and the practical aspects required. The AMVR Leather Face Cushion features a padded PU leather cushion that fits around the eyes and nose with a pre-installed silicone nose cover to prevent light from leaking in and spoiling the VR immersion. The frame is plastic, and the thing feels robust. During gameplay sessions, I never felt like it was flimsy or going to break on me. With only a discrete logo, it looks good when installed. I can also confirm it’s compatible with glasses, but if you want a little extra space, it will also work with the extender provided with the headset. The cushioned pad is attached via Velcro, so you can do this if you need to remove it for cleaning.

Comfort-wise, the face cushion is exceptional. It’s a noticeable difference between the firmer stock face cover and will easily sustain you for lengthy periods of wear. If you’re someone that doesn’t get on with the stock cover, this is the one I recommend. Over time the cushion can get a bit warm, but it wasn’t bad enough for me to stop gameplay. The face cover also features ventilation, which is a great addition.

What’s in the Box

In the box, you get:

  • 1x AMVR Leather Face Cushion
  • 1x Cleaning cloth
  • 1x Instruction Leaflet

Overall Thoughts

Overall, the AMVR Leather Face Cushion for PICO 4 is a great alternative if the stock face cover is too firm. With easy installation, supreme levels of comfort, fantastic build quality, and easy cleaning – it’s an easy recommendation for any PICO 4 user.

Xbox Potentially Teases Fable for June 11th Showcase.

0

Fable was once a pillar for Xbox alongside Halo and Gears, but has since been on a 12 year hiatus. In 2020 Xbox confirmed Fable was being rebooted by Forza Horizon developer Playground Games. Since then they have been radio silent and fans have been clamoring for an update. After a suspicious twitter post, it seems Xbox are potentially teasing Fable for the June 11th showcase.

The twitter post in question was posted at 5pm eastern standard time today. It features an Xbox controller covered in glitter, with a glitter trail leading to an image of the the Xbox showcase promotional image. It features rather fable-esque music as well.

https://twitter.com/xbox/status/1663651704133373953?s=46&t=w_NyYEVEmDZ3_iFkeZYfGQ

At first, you may think it’s far reaching to assume this post is teasing Fable, but after closer inspection, the dots start to connect themselves.

Firstly, the cameraman is following a glitter trail, which for Fable fans, you’ll know is how the player is led to objectives in the games!

https://twitter.com/the_crapgamer/status/1663698532832800768?s=46&t=w_NyYEVEmDZ3_iFkeZYfGQ

The music also sounds strikingly similar to the Bowerstone theme from Fable 1!

https://twitter.com/the_crapgamer/status/1663711740440330241?s=46&t=w_NyYEVEmDZ3_iFkeZYfGQ

As always take any rumor with a grain of salt. Fable being shown in some capacity would back up reports I heard a few weeks ago that Xbox was wanting to showcase it at either their summer showcase or at the game awards.

Fable is such an underrated franchise. Not to mention, Playground Games are simply one of the best studios in our industry. I cannot wait to see their take on Fable. Fingers crossed we see it June 11th at the Xbox Showcase!!

Review: JLab Go Wireless Keyboard

Being able to work on the move is essential for many people. Moreover, finding a convenient way to do this is easier said than done. So, do you take a laptop and have to carry it around all day? Or do you work on your phone and forget the keyboard and mouse? Both options are feasible, but they have their shortcomings as well. This is where the JLab Go Wireless Keyboard comes to the fore!

This compact TKL device is perfect for people who want to work whilst commuting. Alternatively, it is a handy option if you wish to work outside and soak up some sunshine. With a stylish and robust shell, comfortable keystroke distance and excellent connectivity options, this ticks many boxes. Additionally, it costs £19.99 and therefore, it’s an affordable option for many.

What’s in the box of the JLab Go Wireless Keyboard?

  • The slender box is sturdy and pleasant to the eye. Furthermore, the blue finish is complemented by key selling points and images. Additionally, it is fully recyclable, and that’s a plus point.
  • The JLab Go Wireless Keyboard is protected by blue tissue paper. This was unusual but pleasant, as it enhanced the professional finish. The slender and compact design is nice to look at and the USB dongle is hidden in the battery compartment.
  • 2xAAA batteries are needed as it has no in-built battery. Consequently, you’ll need to keep spare batteries at hand.
  • The user guide breaks down the fundamentals.

Technical aspects.

Portable keyboards can be phenomenal and awful! The smaller size can impact the size of the keys, the keystroke travel distance, and comfort. Thankfully, though, the JLab Go Wireless Keyboard was pleasant to use. The tactile keys are responsive and sizeable, and the layout is similar to the Apex 9 Mini. As such, using the keyboard for extended periods was a comfortable experience. Additionally, there is no way to adjust the height. Now, this may concern you, but the lie-flat position feels natural and was easy to use.

A major concern when using a wireless option is connectivity. Fortunately, the JLab Go Wireless Keyboard uses both 5.0 Bluetooth and a 2.4 GHz wireless dongle. Whichever you use, you are guaranteed a seamless experience. By flicking a switch, the keyboard will move between 3 different modes. Accordingly, you can connect up to 3 devices with ease. On top of this, you suffer with no latency issues, and I never experienced a drop in my connection.

Build quality.

Portable devices have to be robust and hard-wearing. Luckily, the JLab Go Wireless Keyboard is built to last. Moreover, it looks stylish as well. With a combination of matte and glossy black accents, it is refined but pleasant to the eye. Additionally, the multi-function keys are well-labelled and the control button is easy to locate.

Alongside this, there is a media knob to control any connected media device. Though this wasn’t entirely necessary, it was nice to have. JLab has done well to hide the USB dongle within the keyboard’s battery compartment. This ensures that the dongle won’t get lost while maintaining the device’s clean image.

Is the JLab Go Wireless Keyboard worth it?

Though I shouldn’t judge goods by their price point, I was worried that this would be woeful. Moreover, I feared the low price would equal low quality. Fortunately, I was completely wrong. Instead, the JLab Go Wireless Keyboard surprised me! Every aspect of the design was great and using it for extended periods was pleasant. What’s more, it looks great, and it is small enough to fit into your bag.

If you then consider its versatility, you’ll be impressed further still. Thanks to the Bluetooth and wireless connection, you can use this device on your PC or laptop, tablet and mobile phone. As such, it is the perfect option if you want to travel light. My only complaint, however, is the AAA battery situation. This isn’t great for the environment and you could run out of juice if you don’t carry spares. Yet, this is a minor complaint. Accordingly, this is an excellent investment and I recommend that you buy it here!
