My Little Universe is a fun-filled adventure title that focuses on exploration and resource gathering. Additionally, this semi-linear affair is cute, easy to understand, and rather addictive. As such, this brilliantly casual game is a bit of a mindless time-sink.

This sandbox exploration experience was developed by Estoty and published by SayGames. What’s more, it can be enjoyed alone or cooperatively with 3 others. As such, you can kill monsters, fell trees, and have a laugh with your mates as you lose track of time.

My Little Universe is filled with portals to switch between worlds. — Use the portal to switch worlds.

My Little Universe asks you to rebuild your surroundings.

My Little Universe lacks a deep and fulfilling story. Instead, much of the gameplay is shrouded in mystery. The hero or heroes have been abandoned on a barren moon. Their ship has no fuel, and they have limited tools to their name. Furthermore, the pathway is hidden unless resources are gathered. Accordingly, you must work together or alone to collect as many logs, stones, crystals, and so forth.

When you have collected enough resources, you may unlock new paths. However, what hides beyond them is often a mystery. Consequently, by rebuilding your surroundings, you’ll piece together each cryptic part of the puzzle. Moreover, you may even find a way to get yourself home.

Simple mechanics.

Though My Little Universe relies heavily on grinding mechanics, I never found it to be tiresome. Instead, I enjoyed the balanced gameplay and the variety of resources. Furthermore, the limited but interesting character progression helps to keep things fresh.

As you kill monsters or collect items, your hero earns XP. This allows you to level up your character while choosing from 3 unique abilities. As such, you can focus on combat, resource gathering, health, speed, and much more. Whatever you decide, you are limited to 10 levels. Subsequently, you’re somewhat restricted in your choices and this keeps things perfectly balanced.

Keep away from the lava. — Is it getting hot in here?

Death and dungeons and improved tools.

Though much of the action follows a familiar pattern, there is some variety along the way. The developer incorporated some interesting dungeons and ghastly bosses to overcome. Each of these hideous entities needed to be defeated if you wished to progress. Accordingly, you needed to be prepared or death was all but assured.

Dying was annoying, but this isn’t a Souls-Like experience. Instead, death simply resets your character’s progress and you must start again. This was annoying and frustrating, but also oddly enjoyable. As such, to prevent this from happening, you can improve your tools. By collecting resources and gathering gold, you can upgrade your axe, pickaxe, and sword. As you improve your equipment, your foes will fall at your feet. Accordingly, this was the best way to overcome your enemies without dying en route.

My Little Universe is simple but vivid to look at.

My Little Universe has an understated art style that is cute to look at. Additionally, its vivid colour palette enhances the sci-fi nature of the story. On top of this, the isometric viewpoint and simple animation ensure that this is pleasant to the eye. You must then consider the varied level design that helps to keep things interesting. Though the action rarely changes course, you never tire of what you see.

The audio adds a sense of fun thanks to the lighthearted folksy tunes. Alongside this, the simple but effective sound effects are dramatic and loud. Consequently, they are slightly unrealistic and a little obnoxious, but I loved them nonetheless.

The hero goes head to head with a gingerbread man. — Are you a friendly gingerbread man?

Brilliant controls.

If you have a Steam Deck, you’ll want a copy of My Little Universe! This works perfectly on SD as well as on PC or laptop. Thanks to the excellent button mapping and responsive controls, every task is achievable. Alongside this, the straightforward UI helps to organise your life. As such, this reduces confusion while keeping you on track.

This addictive title will keep you busy for hours. Though it is extremely simple, there is plenty of depth to discover. Whether you are tackling monsters, upgrading your gear, or harvesting resources, you are kept busy for hours.

My Little Universe is a gem of an indie title.

Finding a hidden gem isn’t as easy as it seems. The indie marketplace is saturated, and every developer wants your attention. However, My Little Universe quickly proves to be a gem of an indie title. Accordingly, I loved it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you uncover the mystery of your surroundings? Harvest resources, kill monsters, and restore each strange world.

Mystic Gate is a cruel and fast-paced title that will test the best players around. However, it is this testing nature that makes it a tough game to put down. Whether you are new to the genre or you are a veteran of rogue-lite games, this will chew you up and spit you out. As such, it takes a fair amount of resolve to get through each of the challenging chapters.

This top-down twin-stick adventure was developed by ZOO Corporation and Eastasiasoft Limited and published by the latter. What’s more, it has delightful rogue-lite mechanics and an array of cruel bosses to overcome. Furthermore, there are plenty of perks, weapons, and abilities to keep things fresh. Subsequently, no playthrough is the same, and this keeps you coming back for more.

Mystic Gate tells a teasing tale.

Would you risk your life for one life-changing wish? Well, this is exactly what happens in Mystic Gate! The gods have placed a strange portal within the human realm. Accordingly, every brave adventurer flocks to it to prove their worth. Rumour has it that if you can defeat every monster, you will be granted a life-changing wish. However, failure is all but assured. Furthermore, all of your progress will be wiped out. As such, you have to be brave or foolish to undertake this adventure.

One wanderer wishes to prove their worth as they tackle the challenge with their robotic sidekick. Additionally, with the help of the locals, this loner can earn gems and gold as they improve their skills and abilities. Yet, they’ll still need a lot of luck if they are to defeat every monster and gargantuan boss.

The hero must tackle a gigantic robot — Avoid the projectiles and destroy that robot.

Bullet hell madness.

Bullet hell mechanics usually drive me insane. However, Mystic Gate blends this idea into its intelligent-level design to create a manageable and fun experience. Furthermore, the ability to dash through projectiles and change your arsenal of weapons was fascinating. On top of this, I loved the additional abilities and skills that change the way you approach every playthrough.

The action revolves around the hero and their journey through a deadly world. Each level comprises many rooms and mountains of foes. As such, you have your work cut out for you if you wish to get to the boss. As you explore each arena, you must kill every monster before you can proceed. These creatures drop keys, gold, and health potions. The gold can be invested in new weapons or abilities at the dungeon shop. On the other hand, the keys will open the gate to the boss’s lair. If you successfully slay the beast, you will move on to the next level and relive the hell again.

The fast-paced nature of the game is enhanced by the aggressive and repetitive soundtrack. On top of this, the OTT sound effects were rough but exciting. I adored the loud bangs and the uncomfortable crashes. What’s more, the upbeat music drives you forward even when you know that death is guaranteed.

Though I was often beaten by the ridiculous pace and the harsh monsters, I adored the control setup. The easy-to-understand inputs were impressive and simple to master. My favourite element of Mystic Gate was the couch co-op mode. This cruel game is made a little easier when you team up with a friend or loved one. However, it is still challenging, so don’t think of this as a get-out-of-jail-free card. Alongside the cooperative action, you’ll return to try out each new ability and the large arsenal of weapons. Consequently, this oozes replay value and longevity.

Instead, it delves into a fantasy realm of madness, giants, and otherworldly magic. Consequently, it takes you on a wicked journey of entertainment, fighting, and colourful characters.

This action rogue-like was developed by Gambir Game Studios and published by PQube. This monstrously cruel genre has some big-name titles. Subsequently, can this whacky game compete with the likes of Hades? Alternatively, will it be flatter than Theresa May’s woeful dancing? Let’s cut to the chase and see what I thought.

The game focuses on a room-by-room adventure that is divided into several realms. Each area has its monsters, demi-bosses, and gargantuan giants. Accordingly, you must familiarise yourself with their strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, there is a merchant, the sorceress Morgana, the Pied Piper, and other hidden gems to discover.

The merchant allows you to spend your soul points on temporary improvements and health potions. Whereas Morgana gives you a helping hand whilst cursing you at the same time. Finally, the Pied Piper challenges you to a brutal arena battle that rewards you with gold. Therefore, there are plenty of ways to change each run and earn valuable gold.

Though your faithful knights are dead, Merlin has managed to capture their spirits within some statues. The action opens with 2 knights to choose from. However, as the game progresses, you’ll unlock more options to change the way you play.

Each statue allows you to choose a unique weapon and power. You can mix and match any of the available knight’s skills to create a new build for each playthrough. Alongside this, there are statues within each realm that empower you with buffs for your weapon and your special ability. Consequently, the random nature of this element ensures that no visit to the Astral Dimension is ever the same.

Though the action will infuriate you, you’ll love the colourful graphics. What’s more, the interesting stage design and the random nature of each playthrough never become tiresome. On top of this, the bullet-hell nature of the projectiles and the oppressive stance of every giant ensure that you stay focused throughout.

Alongside this, you must consider the exceptional audio. I loved the whimsy soundtrack and the cacophony of sounds. Whether you are thwarting your foes, smashing boxes, or grunting as you roll, it all sounds glorious.

This awesome program delivers a coloured image of your upcoming climb. What’s more, it highlights the grade, distance, time remaining, and so forth. Subsequently, you can ride each ascent with confidence and the correct gearing.

Safety and sensors.

Safety is every cyclist’s primary concern! I should know, I was recently involved in an RTC. Sadly, I wasn’t using a rear radar system to warn me about my impending doom. However, if you invest in this excellent accessory, you can use the ANT+ connectivity to enhance your awareness. Thanks to the amazing on-screen LED indicators, you will know if a vehicle is present or if the channel is clear enough to proceed.

Safety is a priority. Yet, what is the point of a computer if it doesn’t track every metric? Thankfully, you can connect an array of compatible sensors, including the Wahoo-branded ones to this device. Additionally, if you have Di2 gearing, you can observe your gear position without taking your eyes off the road. This was amazing, as your confidence and productivity increased on every ride.

Build quality.

The ELEMNT BOLT has moved away from the touchscreen trend. Accordingly, it is fantastic to use no matter the weather. Alongside this, the incredible tactile buttons are sturdy and simple to use. Moreover, if you wish to connect new sensors or check your data, it is straightforward. Thanks to the incredible UI, navigating the menu system was a cinch. As such, this is great even if you are a technophobe.

Another fine feature was the mounting system. This incredible twist approach was strong, secure and robust. Consequently, no matter the mount, you’ll experience no vibration or unwanted movement. What’s more, I was never concerned that the computer would fall off. Subsequently, whether you ride on the roads or trails, you are assured that your device will be secure.

Is the ELEMNT BOLT worth it?

The ELEMNT BOLT is an amazing cycling computer. Yes, it isn’t as powerful as the ROAM, but it isn’t as expensive either. Furthermore, this device is lighter and more streamlined. Essentially, it is affordable and perfect if you undertake short journeys or you want to track your commute to work. Either way, if you invest, you won’t be disappointed. Accordingly, I love this device and I recommend that you buy it here!

Review: Rogue Cards

Well, this is awkward. I spent most of my last review praising a game that swapped cards for dice. I even said something about how I preferred dice. Now I turn around and see Rogue Cards standing there, deck in hand, with an expression of pure hurt on its face. I’d like to say I didn’t mean it, but I honestly did. So going back to the cards was tough. I resolved to put that aside though, and take Rogue Cards on its own merits.

Unfortunately, this hasn’t done Rogue Cards many favours. See, the genre that Rogue Cards is swinging for – the turn-based roguelike genre – is becoming very saturated. I’ve reviewed a handful in recent times. For Rogue Cards to really stand out it needed a Unique Selling Point. I’m not convinced that it really has one. It seems content to fold its arms and stay in the middle of the pack and, as a result, I fear it will soon be forgotten.

Granny, The Card Shark

Let’s give Rogue Cards a breather before we start raking up the muck. It opens with our choice of character – who are all farmers, by the way. This is a world where potato farmers have the gumption and resilience to fight off dragons. Our particular farmer is not content with endlessly watering his or her crops, however, and declares they’re destined for greatness. Then they find their Gran’s old Magic: The Gathering cards and set off to right the world’s wrongs.

These cards are where Rogue Cards makes its first attempt to seperate itself from the pack. If you read the fine print on the cards, you’ll find that spent cards stay in the graveyard at the end of a battle. You’ve gotta pay some cash or beat a boss to get them back. This has a lot of potential, as it encourages being conservative with your cards. You can either chain together a bunch of cards for some quick-fire damage or hold off for that one card that does a ton of damage. Running out of cards is a game over too, so you need to balance your remaining deck against your health.

The issues start to creep in when looking at the cards, though. The actual turn-by-turn action of Rogue Cards is fairly mundane. The vast majority of cards in my current deck just deal flat damage and have names like ‘Slash’ or ‘Bash’. There’s quite a lack of interesting things to do. Damage is split into melee, magic and pure (which is unblockable) and you can do damage over time. You just use whatever damage the enemy is weak to. That’s kind of it. All the different cards start to blend together after a while and there are very few that feel exciting to use.

These Monsters Are Stacked

Putting my positivity hat back on for a moment, I do like the ‘stack’ system. Rather than having a single HP bar, monsters have their health split across stacks. When you defeat one stack, it moves on to the next one, which has its own suite of attacks. This is used to great effect in the Banshee boss, where one stack has a one-hit-kill attack. That means you’ve got to be patient and build up a hand that can blow straight through the stack in one turn. It’s a nice touch and if it wasn’t for all the negative stuff I’m about to say, it would net it a decent score.

Okay, positive hat off. Rogue Cards‘ most glaring flaw is in the presentation. It just feels bland. Card art has the potential to be amazing – just look at Magic: The Gathering. Rogue Cards‘ art is mostly just flat drawings of different weapons or flavours of lightning. The card effects are just simple effects as well. Even the big, rare cards don’t do anything interesting, visually. Enemies suffer from a similar problem. They are presented as small, circular drawings that don’t change. The designs are rather uninspired for the most part too. The background art is very pretty, though.

I bring this up because there’s a big problem that all roguelikes have to overcome: repetition. Rogue Cards crashes headlong into this problem and bounces right off. For one thing, every run follows the same pattern. You start at the village, fight a few battles against orcs then you fight an Elephant, then an Ogre and move onto the next region. Every single time. Same bosses, same enemies, same methods for beating them. This, combined with the simplistic art and combat, made every run begin to feel very samey.

A Harsh Critique

I feel like this is one of the worst things you can say about a piece of entertainment but I feel I have to say it: I found Rogue Cards to be quite boring. Usually with these roguelikes, I reach a point where I’m genuinely excited to press on because everything is clicking for me. I never got that with Rogue Cards. Everything felt so humdrum that I was checking my watch; waiting for the run to be over. I feel mean saying it, but it’s true. The writing, too, doesn’t do much. There’s an occasional funny line, but half of it feels like someone copied a section of fantasy madlibs. That’s when it wasn’t written in broken English.

And it’s a damn shame, because there are kernels of good ideas in here. The enemy stack system and the constant balancing of the graveyard are ideas that deserve to be set into a better game than this. Around these ideas, we’re left with humdrum cards, bland art and repetitive runs. Despite the name, Rogue Cards doesn’t feel that rogue. Instead, it’s following in the footsteps of many games before it and ends up feeling largely forgettable.
