Overall Conclusion: Remote Access and Wuala
Setting up Wuala and Rermote Access was fairly easy, but I had to go ahead and manually reserve DHCP addresses on the router for the network interface cards on the NAS to solve flaky Wuala connection issues. Wuala is rock-solid and fast for getting remote access to files on the NAS, and worked very well in Windows 7, iOS 5 and iOS 6, and Android 4.1 on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. However, I still see some flaky connection performance in Wuala on my Samsung Galaxy S3, so I am hoping that future app updates improve the connection experience on that device.
The remote access page and Wuala both run in Java, meaning that they are not going to work well in a Windows RT environment.
Note that Wuala in this build lacks remote backup functionality, meaning that you can not currently set up a backup or synch operation from the 5big NAS Pro to Wuala. This is a hole in the integrated cloud solution that LaCie is selling here, and LaCie confirmed to me that a future release of Wuala will add those features. I look forward to testing that out.
Overall, LaCie has delivered a functional remote access experience, and Wuala is a fast and effective tool for gaining remote access to your files while outside of the network. Adding remote cloud backup and synch to the feature set, while improving the UPnP performance, will improve the value that LaCie delivers with the 5big NAS Pro.
Stay tuned for future posts, where we’ll look at ISCSI support, RAID management, link aggregation and failover support and overall performance of the 5big NAS Pro, as well as an overall product rating.
FULL DISCLOSURE NOTICE:
Keep in mind that LaCie provided the 5big NAS Pro that I am reviewing free of charge. This had no impact on any of my evaluation of the product, but I wanted you to know.
