Final Thoughts

As with the other keyboards from Microsoft, the first thing you notice about the keyboard is its shape. It’s split in the middle and it has a cushioned palm rest attached. This isn’t the first ergonomic keyboard Microsoft has produced and they have been very popular – I even had one for a while. They do take a little getting used to but once you are used it them it does feel more comfortable using it, especially for extended periods of time.

For users moving over to Windows 8, the fact this keyboard has Windows 8 hotkeys will certainly make the transition easier, and faster! I found myself using the hotkeys more than I thought I would and I really liked that Microsoft included a switch so that I didn’t need to hold down another key to activate those hotkeys and I could easy switch them off if I need the function keys instead.

Connecting it to my PC was simple – I just plugged in the 2.4 GHz wireless transceiver into a spare USB port and Windows did the rest.

The mouse was very comfortable to use and I found myself constantly using the Windows button on the side of it to swap back and forth between screens. This does actually take a little getting used to as there is also a back button under it, so practice makes perfect with this mouse.

At first I found the size and the shape of the mouse to be a little odd – but after I while I became used to that as well and I actually found that prolonged use of the mouse was quite comfortable.

I really liked the number pad, and for those users who do a lot of number entry and use spread sheets this will be of real benefit. The only slight negative was that the number pad doesn’t have any sort of wrist support so prolonged used may cause some slight discomfort.

Another great feature of buying the Sculpt Ergonomic Desktop as a set, rather than buying the three items separately (other than the price), is that they all use a single USB wireless dongle, which will save you two USB ports on your computer. It may not sound like a big deal, but it is!

As usual with hardware that uses batteries, make sure you either have a spare set (or two) ready just in case, and in fact consider swapping the batteries for a set of rechargeable ones, it will save you money in the long run!

Overall I liked the keyboard and the mouse, once I got used to using them, it felt natural and comfortable to use and the Windows 8 hotkeys save me a lot of time and effort. In fact, when I went back to a normal keyboard and mouse I found myself missing them.

The Desktop range consists of the Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard, the Sculpt Ergonomic Mouse and a number pad, with the whole package retailing for £99.99 and available from now.

COD-PHANTOM-PackagePhoto-2500x2294-D

And here is a video showing the unboxing:

Final Thoughts

The first thing I noticed when opening the box was the quality of the packaging and just how well packaged it was – this may not seem like a big deal to some, but it shows that Turtle Beach are making the effort, even when most people are likely to just dispose of the packaging once the headset is set up!

The headset and the transmitter are all branded Call of Duty: Ghosts which is what makes this a limited edition set.

Connecting the headset and the transmitter to whichever console or device you want to use it in was very simple and only took a few moments. There is a quick start guide that shows you all the steps depending on your console, which saves a lot of time, however there was a slight mistake on the PS3 instructions on one of the steps, but it doesn’t take long to figure out what to do, and its on the PS3 setup menu rather than on the hardware, so I soon sorted it.

All the cables you could possibly need are included in the box, so just set everything up as you want and get ready to play.

When I first took the headset out of the box I wanted to jump straight in and use them – and that’s when I noticed the battery was built in to the headset. At first I thought I would have to wait a few hours while the headset charged, but I was pleasantly surprised to find the headset pre-charged and ready to use – very smart move there on the part of Turtle Beach. When you do need to charge them it just a case of connected them via USB. Battery wise Turtle Beach say up to 15 hours of use, and I have to say they are pretty spot on with that time!

When you press the power button on the side of the headset you hear a voice telling you the headset is “powering on” and also one for “powering off”.

The transmitter itself doesn’t have a separate power supply, it is powered by one of the USB ports on the console you are connecting to, so while you will use a USB port, you won’t need to run around trying to find yet another power socket to use. Again, it’s the little things that really make a difference.

The headset itself is lightweight and very comfortable to wear – the headband is both padded and made of a breathable material to help if you get too sweaty, and the ear cups are both padded and large enough to fit round most ears.

The boom mic isn’t attached straight out of the box – attaching it is as simple as just pushing it into the mic port on the headset. It is also moveable so that you can get it into a perfect position for you. I found it more comfortable to just remove the mic when I was playing games that didn’t require me to speak.

The quality of the mic is extremely good, and I found that my voice was being heard loud and clear. One thing I really liked was when the game became noisier, for example in the middle of a raging gun battle, the chat volume was increased automatically.

The sound quality is fantastic, especially when combined with some of the modes and presets. I have also tried various wireless headsets in the past with a varying degree of success, usually because of interference, but in the case of these I had no problems at all – this is due to dual-band wireless scanning for clear channels.

There are even options for enabling surround sound and different surround angles to make your experience even more immersive.

There are three different modes that are enabled by pressing the mode button on the headset. These modes are Game mode, which is optimised for competitive gameplay, Movie mode and Music mode, both of which speak for themselves. Changing the mode depending on what you are you listening to really makes a difference.

As well as the three different modes, there are also different presets. The first set of presets are for Games, and these presets include bass boost, action enhancers (which amplify intense sounds from weapons and explosions) and even a preset called Footstep Focus which focuses on the sound of enemy footsteps approaching. Each person will have a different preset they prefer depending on what they are playing and there own individual play style, and again changing a preset is as simple as pressing a button on the headset.

The other set of presets are focussed on Chat, with settings that include amplifying voice chat and various voice changing and morphing options.

The presets reference guide also mentions downloading Call of Duty: Ghosts presets and using tools to customise your own presets, but at the time of review, these were not yet available, but they will be when both the headset and Ghosts are released.

If you want the best wireless headset around, and if you are a Call of Duty fan and want that edge over other players, then you should seriously consider adding the The Call of Duty Ghosts Ear Force Phantom headset to your arsenal.

CDW-Rating-Banner-black-5

The Call of Duty Ghosts Ear Force Phantom headset retails for £249.99 and will be available from November 5th and you can learn more from the Turtle Beach website.

Lenovo Announces the Yoga Tablet with 18 Hours of Battery Life

Lenovo has debuted its first multimode Yoga Tablet at a livestream launch event with Ashton Kutcher, the company’s newest product engineer. Known for pioneering innovative multimode devices like the Yoga convertible laptop, Lenovo now brings people a new way to get the most out of their tablet experience.

The game-changing Yoga Tablet features three unique modes, giving consumers a better way to use a tablet. With hold, tilt and stand modes, the tablet adapts to the way people use it instead of forcing people to adapt to the technology. Additionally the Yoga Tablet has an amazing up to 18 hours of battery life1 to truly fit users’ ultra mobile lifestyles.

lenovo Yoga Tablet

“Watching and discovering that people frequently use tablets in three main ways allowed us to break the mold on the current ‘sea of sameness’ designs, giving them a better way to read, browse, watch and interact with content,” said Liu Jun, senior vice president and president, Lenovo Business Group, Lenovo. “As consumers’ continue to demand innovative multimode designs we’re thrilled to have Ashton Kutcher on board with us to help further develop the immersive and complementary hardware and rich content experience.”

Yoga Tablet: Three Modes And Longer Battery Life Give Tablets A Better Way

One size does not fit all, especially when it comes to tablets. Lenovo designers and engineers identified three challenges tablet users face: fatigue when holding and using the tablet; no self-supporting mechanism when laid on a flat surface; and an inadequate viewing angle when set on a table. These scenarios inspired Lenovo to break the mold on the “sea of sameness” design and to create Yoga Tablet’s unique modes.

lenovo Yoga Tablet 2

With its exclusive cylindrical handle, hold mode is designed to fit an individual’s hand, so the Yoga Tablet is easier to hold and offers more control over the device whereas other tablets require two hands. Hold mode makes reading, checking social media and browsing the web easy and parallels how people hold magazines when reading.

To convert the Yoga Tablet into stand mode, simply rotate the side cylinder 90° so that the tablet stand deploys, allowing the tablet to stand by itself on a desk or table. Users can change the viewing angle to fit what’s comfortable for them from 110° to 135°. Stand mode makes it easy for users to comfortably watch movies, place video calls and interact with the ten-finger touchscreen without having to rely on add-on accessories.

Users can lay the Yoga Tablet down in tilt mode to type directly on the tablet, play games and just surf the Internet with a better viewing angle. To further enhance the rich content and multimode tablet experience, users can enable the tablet’s auto-detection software that automatically brings up frequently used apps in hold and stand modes.

The Yoga Tablet’s multimode design not only provides a better usability experience, it offers dramatically longer battery life of up to 18 hours, which is significantly more than the amount of typical tablets. Its cylindrical handle packs in powerful, dual batteries and unlike most tablets, it uses batteries typically found in laptops. The Yoga Tablet can even charge other devices such as smartphones via its USB on-the-go. The 10 inch and 8 inch models run on MT8125 for Wi-Fi models and MT8389 Quad Core processors for 3G models with 16 or 32 GB capacity and feature Android 4.2. Also equipped with Dolby audio, Yoga Tablet’s front-facing speakers create a powerful surround sound experience through the device speakers and with headphones.

Extremely mobile, both models are featherweights weighing in at 605 grams for the 10-in model and 400 grams for the 8-in model. They feature high definition 1280 x 800 displays, a 5 MP auto focus rear camera plus an additional front camera, a micro SD expansion slot, allowing up to 64 GB of total storage, Wi-Fi and optional 3G in select countries and a micro USB connection and Dolby DS1 for rich audio. Lenovo offers an optional Bluetooth keyboard for the 10-in model that functions as a cover and even wakes up the tablet when it’s removed and puts the tablet to sleep when it’s attached.  Users can also opt for a WD100 dongle in select countries to stream video content from the tablet wirelessly to a TV. Lenovo also offers a portfolio of services solutions for the Yoga Tablet including warranty extensions, upgrades and premium technical support.
