Review: MARVEL’s Spider-Man

The moment Sony announced that an exclusive modern take on Spider-Man was coming to PS4 in 2018 I was already excited and a little nervous for it. With the Arkham series for now at least, finished there have been little comic book games other than the Injustice series who have stepped up to deliver that super-hero experience. But when you have Insomniac Games developing your Spider-Man title the hope and expectations were huge. Happily, and without hesitation I can say that MARVEL’s Spider-Man not only learned valuable lessons from the work of Rocksteady Studios the with Arkham series, but they have delivered for me the close to perfect video game for our friendly neighbourhood wall crawler.

What Insomniac Games has managed to pull off with this game is quite simply outstanding from the gameplay to the story and just every little detail that were clearly and painstakingly worked on to deliver the ultimate Spider-Man experience. It should also be pointed out that this is very much Insomniac’s take on the Spider-Verse and the many characters and villains that Spidey has to interact with. What I really appreciated most was how this is a Spider-Man who has been a superhero for years, he is experienced in what he does and instead of being bogged down by attempting to retell the origin story which every single MARVEL comic book fan knows, we leap right into the action as we see Peter Parker awoken by a police alert on his phone about the raid about to happen to take down The Kingpin Wilson Fisk. By starting out with a quick look at Peter Parker’s normal start is just a great way to introduce players very quickly to his world, as he grabs some toast, picks up his mask that he has been tinkering with right before he puts on the classic Spider-Man suit we all know just as he leaps from his apartment window and starts to web sling towards the Fisk Tower to join the Police raid.

The moment the game so smoothly transitions from the opening cutscene into actual gameplay is just sublime and to have the player take control just as Spidey begins to web sling was just genius as it is perhaps the most iconic thing players are looking to do in the game. What is so impressive about the web slinging is just how immersive it alone is in the game as you fluidly web sling through buildings and famous landmarks in New York and it just instantly makes you feel about as Spider-Man as you can at that point. The sheer feeling of momentum is the real magic behind the web slinging with such speed and you swoop through buildings helped along by fabulous sound effects and music such as the noise of the traffic if you swing low enough to just the musical score when you are swinging above the rooftops and skyscrapers.

In fact, the whole opening thirty minutes of prologue action is perhaps one of the finest tutorial sections to any game in recent years as its so beautiful woven into the story itself that it almost does not feel like a tutorial as all the fundamentals and basics to the gameplay from the combat, to traversing as Spidey to how QTE moments. Throughout the fighting and especially when taking down Fisk down you get a really great insight into Peter Parker and the writing for his dialogue has nailed his witty comebacks and humour throughout the rest of the game. It is such a superb and fun opening to the game that sets the scene for everything else to come.

One of the biggest surprises I felt came in the form of just how much freedom players have right from the very start in terms of just going off and doing your own thing at your own pace. Main story missions are highlighted on the map and on-screen hub but at no time is the player pressured into racing to start it. Instead the whole of New York is open for the player to explore and the city feels like a city as it is a huge playground to be in. The city itself is broken up into different sections and all have their own side objectives to complete throughout the entire story campaign and the side objectives are so well designed as well. Right away after completing the prologue I spent the next six hours completing all the available side objectives such as collecting all Peter’s backpacks that dotted all over New York and helping to stop crimes in progress from muggings and kidnappings to armed robberies. The abundance of side things to do is a great way to learn and discover the city but such attention has been put into the design of the city that it very much the MARVEL’s New York City as you will discover as you complete the landmark photographs activities and start noticing some rather famous MARVEL universe locations within the game. Just as with the story I am choosing not to spoil as little as possible but trust that looking at every item in the backpacks you find and the locations you are asked to photograph will literally blow your mind as a MARVEL Comics fan.

Along with the web-slinging, Spidey’s other powers really come into play so brilliantly with the combat which before I finally got my hands-on release day, was something I was a little uncertain about. The best way to really describe it would be his powers are very much a big and natural part of his combat which is then enhanced further by the web-gadgets which are unlocked and upgraded during campaign progress. We are talking web trip mines which will instantly stick an enemy to a wall or other enemy to impact webbing that can stick an enemy to a wall and web bombs which will web up all enemies in range. The ability to use Spider sense as well to dodge attacks and gunfire just becomes so instinctive and is animated so well that everything you do in combat when being attacked by multiple enemies is thrilling. Combining his web gadgets with his powers never becomes repetitive and though you upgrade gadgets more through out the campaign, no fight will feel too easy as enemies become stronger and tougher as well.

The sheer amount of content in the game in and around the main story itself is quite frankly staggering and it is a testament to Insomniac Games that their base game has so much for players to enjoy and sink their teeth into from the main story to side objectives to the collectibles and even the secret stuff. Everything you do is about having the best superhero and Spider-man gaming experience you can have. Even the trophies are designed to reward you for just playing the game and where other games would force players to get perfect scores in challenges which can be infuriating and progression halting but it is very possible to earn the Platinum trophy by the time you finish the main story if you take the time to do everything available as you go along. Now this does not mean trophies are just handed to you and you will have to put some real effort into get them but the sensation that this game just wants you to have the best time you have is why is works so incredibly well.

Just knowing that the plan is to release three more pieces of story content in the form of ‘The City That Never Sleeps’ expansion pass has riles some people but having put over thirty hours into this game already and still finding more secrets to uncover and things to do the base game post platinum trophy and 100% the game has ben returning to it just for fun means any extra content especially content that is being reduced over the next few months is all completely worth it in my eyes and is something look forward too with new missions, costumes and no doubt more secrets to find. Speaking of costumes other than the three pre-order costumes, all others in the game are unlocked via gameplay which is a rare and very old school way of rewarding players for playing the game as well as the serious fan choices in costumes to wear depending on which you prefer. Personally, I love the new look suit with the white Spider but you can have an abundance of choice from costumes taken from the comics to the full range of the current MCU Spider-Man costumes with the Iron Spider from Avengers: Infinity War as well as the Spider-Man: Home Coming suit and even his homemade one from the same film. I cannot stress enough just how satisfying everything about this game is from the point of being a gamer, a MARVEL Comic book and as a Spider-Man nerd.

Now I do feel that there is a need to get the elephant in the room out the way which are the comparisons to the above mentioned Arkham series. Quite frankly for me the Arkham series is the benchmark for all action adventure-based video games based on a comic book character and as it is the benchmark it will be natural to not only compare all other games to the series but also to see its own systems and gameplay inspire similar ones in other games, hell even the Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor/War games based their combat systems on the successful one in Arkham,  so when comparing Spider-Man to Arkham, it is not an injustice nor an insult to do so or to comment when indeed MARVEL’s Spider-Man manages to improve on what may feel like a familiar gameplay style or system. But the way in which Insomniac Games has made this their own version of Spider-Man is a credit to their hard work and passion because knowing the Spidey-verse as well as I do, I not only applaud them for what they did so far but knowing what they have planned to come as well as the potential going forward makes so very much excited to see what they can do next and they should be allowed to do everything they feel they can following this game.

MARVEL’s Spider-Man is close to flawless for me in so many ways and it has easily surpassed all expectations I had going into this title. I lost myself in the New York City the game invited me to explore and as a comic book nerd every take on all the characters I know so well from Aunt May to even the Rhino felt new and fresh and not some carbon copy from a comic book story I have read. The way Insomniac Games approached this is so clearly from a place of love and passion for Spider-Man and MARVEL worlds that you come away from a session with the game with that feeling of admiration for what they have accomplished here. The very fact I am still gushing about how good this game is having completed it with Platinum Trophy obtained and I am still returning to spend time as Spider-Man in this game really is a testament of how if you pardon the pun, amazing this Spider-Man game is.

Nostalgia for great Spider-Man games of the past combined with the shadow of the success in the Arkham Series placed a lot of pressure on the game to deliver not to mention the high expectations of fans. This game nails everything fans wanted and did so by giving everything players could want in such a game and even then, still managed to go above and beyond and provide extra things. Superb voice actors bring a new and invigorating take to well known characters in a story that works hard into bringing players into its world that the moments when you switch from Peter Parker to another character never feels like an intrusion.

This truly is the best Spider-Man game for the webslinger and I am already chomping at the bit to see what comes next for it just six days since release. If you are still on the fence about this game, and sales figures and chart places across different countries suggest that is a rare thing right now, but do yourself a favour and buy this game. This year for PlayStation exclusives has just been off the chain with God of War, Ni No Kuni 2 and Yakuza 6 all battling for my own person Game of the Year, Spider-Man has webbed all of them up and truly pipped them right now.

Not even James Jonah Jameson himself could argue against how vital it is to have this friendly neighbourhood hero in your console right now.

A Closer Look

The Orbi Pro Router

The Orbi Pro Satellite

Setting up Orbi

Once you have connected up the Orbi router it’s time to work through the setting process. Connected to the Orbi WiFi network and follow the onscreen process.

You can choose to add a satellite at this point in the process, but I waited until later.

You can then upgrade any firmware.

And that’s it – the router is set up and ready to use.

Using the Orbi

Configuring the Orbi and making any changes are handled either through the Orbi app or through your browser. Below shows the browser version, as you can see it is very easy to see what your options are and to select anything you want to see more of.

You can make changes to your Internet setup:

Change Wireless settings:

For either Wireless network:

You can easily see what is connected, with a signifiant amount of detail.

If you want to enable Guest access you can do so:

There are also a number of advanced options to choose from and view:

Placing the Orbi Satellite

Once you have your Orbi router and network configured just how you want it the next step is to place your satellite, or satellites where you want them. Once you have them physically located where you want them it’s just a case of clicking on Add Orbi Satellite from the menu and following the on-screen instructions.

Once the process is complete you will be able to see them listed on the Attached Devices page, as you can see below. So in this example the satellite is connected to the router using 5G and has a status of Good.

Then all you need to do is connect up your devices to your Orbi network and away you go.

Final Thoughts

You can tell the difference between the satellite and the router by the top colour. The router is blue and the satellites are grey.

Setting up the router is relatively straightforward and fairly quick – just follow each of the steps and you should be up and running in no time.

One of the steps during the setup is a firmware check – make sure that you upgrade to the latest version of the firmware otherwise you might run into some problems as Netgear had a few issues recently that took a while to get resolved. Thankfully the latest firmware does resolve this issue and the my Orbi network has been stable since then.

You can choose to have your satellite or satellites connect to the router, or each other via WiFi – which depending on your walls and room layouts might work perfectly well, or if you have a wired connection near where you want the satellites you should connect the satellites to it. This then connects each satellite to the router using the Ethernet backhaul process which ensures you get the maximum possible speed from each satellite otherwise you will be limited to whatever speed the satellites will get when connecting either to the router or to each other. I noticed a significant speed and reliability increase when connecting the satellites to the router via Ethernet.

Then all you have to do is make any configuration settings you want and have your devices connect to the Orbi network and that’s it. Each satellite, along with the router also has Ethernet ports on the back so if you have devices that need a wired connection you can easily utilise those.

There are a lot of different configuration settings you can make – so do take the time to go through them all before you start connecting your devices as the web front end provides a lot of useful information as well.

You can place the router and the satellites on any service or you can use the included wall or ceiling mounts to make it look more professional – this is a great addition as the mounts fit the devices perfectly and blends in with them.

The overall coverage you get with the Orbi is really great – and walking around where you do have coverage with your device provides a seamless constant connection. Speed wise I found the connection to be excellent when the satellites were connected to the router via Ethernet, and between very good and good when connected via Wi-Fi, although to be fair the was because of my particular setup, so make sure you do your own testing, but if you can use Ethernet for the satellite to router connections you won’t be disappointed.

The Orbi Pro kit as reviewed here (SRK60) retails for around £399 and each additional satellite will cost you around £279.

If you don’t need some of the business type functions then you should definitely take a look at the non Pro version of the Orbi system which is just as good but without some of the additional business features and wall mounts!

If you need a Wi-Fi solution for your business or home then you want something that is going to be easy to set up, easy to maintain, and works well – that’s exactly what the Orbi Pro does.

You can learn more from the Orbi website.

Preview: Twin Mirror

Dontnod Entertainment might be better known for coming up with the popular Life is Strange game, but it has also released other unique games, such as the aptly named Remember Me (character trying to regain her memories) game. It seems that the developer is very fond of games about memories, since the recently announced Twin Mirror is also about a man trying to jog his memory.

Preview: 11 – 11: Memories Retold

Every once in a while, a game such as 11 – 11: Memories Retold comes along that makes you wonder just what is going on. Even its unique painted style visuals makes one wonder how developer Aardman came up with such an idea.

Huawei has unveiled new research which reveals that the nation’s ‘twilight workers’ contribute an estimated £487 billion annually to the UK economy.

Conducted to celebrate the release of the Huawei P20 Pro Twilight Edition, the study of more than 2,000 UK workers found that a quarter (25%) of us now work outside of the traditional 9 – 5.

Looking across the UK, a number of ‘twilight hubs’ have emerged, with Norwich (34%) topping the list of cities whose residents work whilst the rest of the nation sleeps, followed closely by London and Manchester (both 31%), and Liverpool and Cardiff respectively (both 30%).

“Exploring the lives of those who work in the twilight hours has really opened our eyes to how much really goes on between sunset and sunrise,” said Justin Costello, Head of Marketing for Huawei UK & Ireland. “With the launch of the Huawei P20 Pro Twilight Edition, we wanted to look at those who exclusively work in the ‘twilight hours’ and showcase these previously unheard stories. The P20 Pro Twilight Edition is the perfect companion for those who lead their lives by night, and with our industry-leading AI-powered technology, capturing incredibly clear low-light images during the twilight hours is now easier than ever.”

Celebrating the unsung heroes of Britain’s bustling twilight economy, Huawei has released a new film documenting the stories of those who work from dusk until dawn, providing a behind-the-scenes glimpse at what some of Britain’s most talented twilight workers get up to when the rest of us are busy sleeping.

Review: Strange Brigade

Strange Brigade took me by surprise when I happened upon its preview demo stand during EGX Rezzed earlier this year and it was a welcome one which made me really look forward to the release. It looked to offer some fun co-op action and provide a new take on what is now a fixed component of team-based shooters in building the action around horde mode gameplay with a Rebellion style and twist that really appealed to me. Now it was time to see what the full game has to offer

As a huge fan of the Sniper Elite series I was curious to see how Rebellion would bring Strange Brigade to life as the focus seems to have shifted away from dramatic sniping battles and crazy over the top X-Ray style kill cams. Strange Brigade is a big move away with its focus on squad-based gameplay but also the very tongue in cheek fourth wall breaking humour that I had not expected to be such a big part of the game play through out.

The Strange Brigade are a team of specialists who have been put together to search the world for supernatural relics and items and stand as the last line of defence on behalf of the British Empire. Set in the 1930’s our brigade is alerted to a new threat. 4000 years ago the Witch Queen Seteki was imprisoned in a nameless tomb and all records of her removed from Egyptian history but now something is stirring and our heroes must work together in order to keep her evil from destroying the world. Throw in a very old school adventure TV show presentation and some colourful characters to play as and you have the makings of a something a little different from the regular squad-based shooter.

Before I get to the gameplay I really do have to give special mention to the best thing in the game, the Narrator. This guy brings all the comedy and one liners and is constantly in the ears of players throughout the gameplay. He is as quintessentially British as you could possibly get and he really, really does not like cats. He provides the advice and intelligence or each mission and he will tell you off for not pulling your weight and I do mean telling you off. During my first time playing I put the controller down to grab a drink and suddenly I hear myself being told off in the game for not moving then when I had to pause the game I was told off again. I really appreciate that level of self-awareness which at no time goes too far to break the immersion in the game or too heavy handed that it feels as though it is making fun of the fact it is breaking the fourth wall. The Narrator really is the heart of the game and carries it for me outside of the gameplay.

That gameplay is also rather fun if not heavy on really offering too much of a challenge for players. The brigade is sent into different locations to hunt down Seteki whilst battling the evil forces her spirit has reanimated around the relics and collectibles which the team can search for and collect. Each level involves large maps which contain puzzles to solve to help navigate that level and progress further into it. At times the levels can actually feel far too big with places to explore that rarely provide anything more than a few collectibles or a random fight encounter. This feeling especially hits you as the player if you are playing solo, which the game is perfectly playable as but you will always have that feeling that the map has been designed for a full four player team.

I did enjoy the puzzle solving though like combat it is never really taxing with most of them simple or requiring finding the right code combination for certain doors but it did offer other things to do than just the shooting. The best factor is in how the gameplay adapts to the number of players so if you are playing solo you can do everything solo but if playing with two or more friends then the puzzles adapt so for example if a floor puzzle requires a solo player to step on the correct floor tiles in the right order will adapt so that the same puzzle will need all the players in the team to help solve that puzzle. This level of adaptation is rare in such games with solo play only being feasible to a certain point before it either becomes unplayable or just not fun but Strange Brigade welcomes solo play but encourages and rewards for co-op play without penalising the solo players out there, which is very refreshing.

When it come to the combat the best way to really think of it is a light comparison to Call of Duty Zombies in that when fights happen, a large number of enemies will come for you to take out. Enemies come in different types from regular cannon fodder to more specialised ones. Levels have built in traps which can help take out enemy numbers. Weapons can also be upgraded to have different ammunition bonuses such as added damage values or elemental power like fire or electricity. Like CoD Zombies you can spend some of the gold you collect through the level to access special weapon crates which will give you a random special weapon which will only last till its own ammunition runs out. Each character has their own unique abilities in the form of their amulets, these can be charged with the energy emitted from killing enemies till it fills up and can unleash a special power move which varies depending on the character but others can be purchased throughout the game and equipped. New guns can also be purchased and unlocked and loadouts can be changed at various checkpoint camps in the levels and also before you begin a new mission.

Visually I really like the aesthetics of Strange Brigade from the individual characters to the enemies and levels. They all fit really well together but it would have been nice to see some variation of the traps and puzzles in the levels which end up all pretty much the same. Animation can be a little janky at times and noticed some glitches at times but nothing overall game breaking. The only real problem I had came with the hit detection on some of the guns which can be more than a little off at times and grenades can have a very hit and miss ration to them.

Strange Brigade is certainly fun but by keeping everything rather simple and less challenging it can be seen a pleasant but casual experience for friends. New content has been regular in the two weeks since launch with more to come in the season pass although I do question the pricing of the pass which is close to the same price you can find the main game for at this point. There is certainly enough to enjoy and more so with friends but even if just as a solo experience it still offers a fun time.

Qualcomm launches Snapdragon Wear 3100 smartwatch platform

1

Qualcomm has today launched the next generation Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 Platform for smartwatches. The platform is based on a new ultra-low power system architecture designed to deliver a rich interactive mode, new personalized experiences, and extended battery life. The official launch, at an event in San Francisco, was supported by Google, who discussed the evolution of the Wear OS by Google software platform. The launch also included the announcement of the first Snapdragon Wear 3100 customers.

Snapdragon Wear 3100 Platform Redefines the System Architecture
Snapdragon Wear 3100 is based on a new ultra-low power hierarchical system architecture approach. In this architecture, the high-performance quad core A7 processors, the highly efficient integrated DSP, and a new ultra-low power co-processor work in conjunction with each other to help customers re-imagine new smartwatch experiences while supporting extended battery life. The new capabilities are designed to allow consumers to enjoy the beauty of a fashion watch with the power of a smartwatch, the battery life of a sports watch with the richness of a smartwatch, and the utility of an analog watch with the flexibility of a smartwatch.

“Qualcomm Technologies has played a critical role in the evolution of the smartwatch segment and our customers are currently shipping more than 100 Wear OS by Google smartwatches with 25 brands globally based on our existing platforms,” said Anthony Murray, senior vice president and general manager, voice, music and wearables, Qualcomm Technologies International, Ltd. “With the Snapdragon Wear 3100 Platform, we envisioned a new ultra-low power system architecture and in collaboration with the latest from the Wear OS by Google team, to help deliver a rich interactive mode, bring in new personalized experiences and support extended battery life for tomorrow’s smartwatches. We are delighted to announce Fossil Group, Louis Vuitton, and Montblanc as our first Snapdragon Wear 3100 customers.”

The new co-processor, the Qualcomm® QCC1110, has been designed from the ground up and is at the heart of the Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform. It is incredibly small at ~21mm2, is optimized for ultra-low power operation, and acts as a powerful companion to the main processor, re-defining audio, display, and sensor experiences for next generation smartwatches. The co-processor also integrates a deep learning engine for custom workloads, such as keyword detection, and is extensible over time.

Additionally, the Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform includes a new wearable power management sub-system (PMW3100) to support lower power and higher integration, brings in a new DSP framework to support next generation sensor processing in an open execution environment, and implements a new dual display architecture to support the hierarchical approach. The 4G LTE modem, proven in mobile applications, and which has already shipped over one billion units, is paired with new high-performance Gallium Arsenide power amplifiers, which helps to increase power efficiency in smartwatches.

Snapdragon Wear 3100 Based Smartwatches Aim to Enrich the User Experience
The Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform, in conjunction with the latest from Wear OS by Google, is designed to deliver a rich interactive mode, new personalized experiences, and support for extended battery life.

  1. (a) Rich Interactive Mode
Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform serves as a strong, proven foundation for rich interactions by helping to deliver high performance, superior connectivity, smart sensing, and compelling features. Qualcomm Technologies is collaborating closely with the Wear OS by Google team to utilize and enhance the capabilities of the Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform and support increasingly rich, fluid experiences designed for the wrist.“Together with Qualcomm Technologies and the ecosystem, Wear OS by Google has enabled a vibrant set of wearable devices, offering consumers with great choice and diversity,” said Dennis Troper, director of product management, Wear OS by Google. “We’re excited to see Qualcomm Technologies’ new Snapdragon Wear 3100, their continued investment in the wearable space, and we look forward to the ecosystem bringing the next generation of smartwatch technology to the industry.”
  2. (b) New Personalized Experiences
Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform, based on the new ultra-low power system architecture, is being used to help bring new personalized experiences to next generation Wear OS by Google based smartwatches. Three such personalized experiences include the Enhanced Ambient Mode, Dedicated Sports Experiences, and Traditional Watch Mode. The Enhanced Ambient Mode helps the smartwatch to meet consumer desires for a fashion watch by supporting a smooth second hand, up to 16 colors, live complications and improved brightness. The Dedicated Sports Experiences is designed to allow active users to go for an ultra-marathon, swim long distances, bike for miles, or hike the mountains with GPS and heart rate turned on for the duration. The Traditional Watch Mode is designed to make it possible for consumers to continue to enjoy their beautiful watch for extended periods of time. Each one of these personalized experiences are supported by offloading the display and sensor processing from the A7 processors to the ultra-low power co-processor.
  3. (c) Support for Extended Battery Life
Snapdragon Wear 3100 Platform is designed to help reduce power usage and bring increased flexibility for consumers to experience the benefits of extended battery life. The new platform is designed to help reduce power usage in areas such as low power modes, GPS/location batching, per minute/second clock updates, sensors processing, MP3 playback, and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth voice queries. This results in typical battery life day of use improvements ranging from 4 to 12 hours compared to the previous Snapdragon Wear 2100 platform, depending on display type, battery capacity, and device configurations. The new Personalized Sports Experiences keep GPS and heart rate monitoring on for the duration of the activities and is designed to deliver up to 15 hours battery life (calculated based on typical 450mAh sports watch battery). The Traditional Watch Mode, great for traveling, supports an impressive week-long battery life to the smartwatch by switching to this mode from the Wear OS by Google experience and is designed to allow consumers to enjoy basic watch functions for an extended period.
