Tranquil Launch Series 2 SQA-5H Windows Home Server Powered by Intel D510 CPU

Windows Home Server news here at CES has been pretty thin on the ground, with only LaCie announcing their forthcoming Windows Home Server product. There wasn’t even any mention of Windows Home Server in the CES keynote yesterday.

So it is great to see that today Tranquil PC have announced the launch of their new SQA-5H Windows Home Server which is powered by the new Intel D510 CPU.

We did a review of the Series 1 model last year which you can read by clicking here.

We hope to have one for review shortly, so watch this space.

Here at CES in Las Vegas, the night before the fun really starts, there is always a keynote speech by Microsoft. It starts at 6.30pm (so in about 30 minutes time) and if you want to watch it live you can watch a webcast.

Here is what Microsoft say about the keynote:

Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer of Microsoft, and Robbie Bach, president of the Entertainment & Devices Division, deliver the pre-show keynote address in Las Vegas to kick off the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Coverage begins on Jan. 6, 2010, at approximately 6:30 p.m. PST with the live, streaming keynote.

So, if you want to watch the live stream (or the recording if you miss the live event), you can do so by clicking here.

Also, a few of the guys – Ian Dixon, Terry Walsh, Garry Whittiker and Dave McCabe are actually there right now, in the front row would you believe! Well, they did queue up for about 4 hours to get in, so well done guys. I couldn’t go with them as I had a few meetings to go to.

D-Link Pebble Media Player Unveiled

2

Seems D-Link are busy bunnies this week here at CES. Not content with announcing their new Home Monitoring Solution, they have announced a new media player, called the Pebble.

D-link Pebble

As you know, we here at Using Windows Home Server love media players, so we are quite excited about this new one as well.

I will be looking closely at this during the week and will report back.

For now, here is the press release:

CES News Round Up – Day 1 (Sort of)

5

CES doesn’t officially start until Thursday 7th January, but today (Tuesday) and tomorrow there are various events taking place for the press.

I attended a couple of events today, and so I thought I would post a brief run down on some of the things I saw (and some of these things will be covered in greater depth in the next few days when time permits):

ASUS Briefing

At the ASUS briefing this afternoon, Johnny Shih, the Chairman of ASUS talked about a number of new products, including a new gamer laptop, the G73 (that contains the Intel Core i7-720QM chip), the new U53 laptop made from Bamboo and the NX90, which has been designed with Bang and Olufsen, which frankly looks fantastic!

ASUS ROG G73Jh Gaming Notebook ASUS NX90 Bang & Olufsen ICEpower Notebook

He also talked about some new concepts known as Waveface, including a wearable smartphone (that looks like a bracelet), a personal tablet and some home entertainment devices called Casa, all providing the “right information at the right time”.

More information on these over the next few days.

CES Unveiled

Before the start of CES, the press are invited to a gathering of a number of exhibitors to give them a bit of a sneak preview – and there is food and drink, which always gets people there.

There were a number of really interesting things on show, too many to go into now (I’m feeling rather jet lagged still), but I did get to see the D-Link Boxee up close and personal, and all I can say is that I want one more than ever!

There was also a cool hover drone from Parrot that looked like it was straight out of Terminator, plus some very cool e-book readers, to name but a few.

ar_drone-duel-with-indoor-hulls

LaCie were also there but they didn’t have their new Windows Home Server with them – for that we will have to wait until Thursday!

If the main event is anything like Unveiled, then we are in for some great gadgets.

And it was great to catch up Garry Whittaker, who I haven’t seen since the UK Media Center and Windows Home Server User Group meeting last year (thanks again for the Pepsi Garry) 🙂

So, I’m going to try and get some sleep now, but stay tuned as there is lots to report already and there is still a full day before the event actually opens, and believe me tomorrow is going to be a long, and busy day!

LaCie Reveals New Server Technology For Small Businesses with Windows Home Server

Just got this press release which I thought would be of interest to all you Windows Home Server fans 🙂

More information will be forthcoming later this week so keep watching – I may even have something later tonight!

CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW, LAS VEGAS (January 5, 2010) – Today LaCie demonstrates a new network storage server based on the Microsoft® Windows Home Server platform. The product will be shown for the first time at the CES.

This server leverages the success of LaCie’s award winning 5big Network, which features five user-replaceable drives, Gigabit Ethernet, and data protection support for data integrity. The technology demonstration shows that by combining Microsoft and LaCie technologies on a single platform, small business users can enjoy a seamless interface to automatically back up computers to a single server. The server secures their backup both locally and remotely by automatically copying their critical data to the cloud, using LaCie’s Wuala technology.

“LaCie’s network server offers an exciting design and provides plenty of storage options with terabytes of capacity and the ability to back up data from local computers and to cloud-based services,” said Leslie McGuire, Director of Windows Server Marketing at Microsoft. “We’re pleased to have LaCie join us as a Windows Home Server partner.”

“Our aim with this technology demonstration is to show that by teaming with Microsoft and through our Wuala cloud storage technology, we can provide an enterprise-grade, data protection solution with both local backup and off-site replication in one low-cost, compact system,” said Erwan Girard, Solutions Business Unit Manager. “By leveraging the groundbreaking Wuala cloud technology, which ensures the highest speed in data upload and download, our server will provide truly usable cloud-based data backup and restore to accommodate the large amounts of data generated by small businesses.”

Additional product details will be available once it is officially announcement in the first quarter of 2010.

CES 2010 is almost here

4

Well I am sitting here at 4.30am in Las Vegas wide awake!

CES

I flew in a couple of days ago and CES is due to start on Thursday, although there are a number of pre-launch events, press conferences and meetings planned before then.

Should be seeing a lot of friends here as well, like Ian Dixon, Terry Walsh, our very own Tim Daleo and David McCabe to name but a few.

And of course I will be reporting on anything new, exciting and interesting that may come up.

The press releases are already coming in thick and fast so I will post about the more interesting ones.

Is there anything specific anyone wants to know about? Leave a comment and we will see what we can find out.

D-Link Unveils Home Monitoring Solutions

As you know, here on Using Windows Home Server, we have often looked at home automation systems (and by we, I mean Tim) and also various home security systems and cameras.

With CES now upon us, new product information is coming thick and fast, and this press release just hit our inbox, so I thought I would share it with you:

D-LINK TAKES HOME MONITORING, ENERGY MANAGEMENT TO NEW LEVEL

New Products Include D-Link® Home and Energy Monitoring Kits;3G Door Phone Allows Mobile Phone Remote Viewing

dlink monitor front

LAS VEGAS, CES Booth 36232, South Hall, LVCC, Jan. 05, 2010 – D-Link, the end-to-end networking solutions provider for consumers and business, today announced a trio of products designed to make the digital home more secure and less power hungry with minimal impact on the family budget.

The D-Link® Home Monitoring Starter Kit is an affordable, easy-to-use and very innovative "Connected Home Monitor" system that provides homeowners and renters with new levels of security for their property and loved ones. Designed for quick and easy installation by the user, the system connects via broadband router in the home, and can then be remotely monitored and controlled through a personalized web portal account at mydlink.com. Alerts from wireless sensors around the home are instantly relayed by text, email and voice-call to the consumer and their designated contacts.

Featuring a sleek, unobtrusive design, the D-Link Home Monitoring Starter Kit offers enhanced features found in more costly security systems, and uses Internet Protocol (IP) technology to offer an improved range of services and functionality in homes without traditional phone lines (POTS). The system can be easily expanded with infrared motion detection, door/window contacts, keypad, personalized key fobs, fire, carbon monoxide, and water leak detectors — all offered as additional accessories. The system can use these sensors to inform parents when their kids get home safely from school, and a home video option is available with D-Link IP cameras which can capture and record events with remote access to the images available through the website or via mobile phones.

Whether the user is traveling, at work, on vacation or at the neighborhood shopping mall, this solution can provide new levels of protection with the mydlink™ platform monitoring the property 24 hours a day, seven days a week It can even protect people in the home, with messaging to relatives and caretakers if someone is not out of bed and moving around the property by a specified time in the morning!

The kit’s Control Unit is simply connected via Ethernet cable to a broadband router and reports all alarm and other activity information directly to the mydlink platform. A range of in-home sensors report wirelessly to the Control Unit, and the user can add up to 20 additional sensors. The whole system can be self-installed in just 30 minutes as all sensors supplied with the standard kit are pre-registered with default settings.

The Home Monitor can be expanded with the D-Link Home Energy Monitoring Starter Kit. It is one of the first products that lets consumers measure energy consumption of all electrical appliances in the home, turning the Home Monitor into the ultimate smart energy "Green Machine". It actually changes the way homeowners or renters deal with the age-old challenge of how to keep their home energy consumption to a minimum. It also provides practical tools for power management. When linked to the Home Monitoring Starter kit, consumers can use the mydlink portal to program devices to power-down when the home is empty, helping reduce carbon emissions and reduce utility bills by saving electricity.

The kit is equipped with two power-usage sensor adapters (additional sensors may be purchased separately) that plug into the home’s wall sockets near where the electrical appliances are located. By plugging the appliances directly into the kit’s sensor adapters, users can automatically download energy consumption data to their personal mydlink.com webpage where they have access to real-time power usage levels; daily, weekly and monthly breakdowns; cost conversions and graphical analysis. In addition, the product allows utility companies to offer users incentives on fee schedules based on their history of energy conservation.

The D-Link 3G Door Phone, another security innovation from D-Link, is the newest idea for adding another level of surveillance for the home. It acts like – and is powered the same as – an ordinary doorbell. But it is not ordinary. It is the first doorbell of its kind to allow homeowners to get a full view of visitors to their property from wherever they are – at home or away – using their 3G mobile phones. A built-in fixed focus .1 megapixel CMOS camera captures the images of visitors and streams the information to the PC or 3G mobile device, an LED indicator lets the homeowner know that the device is working, and an illuminated button allows easy visibility when it is dark outside.

Price and Availability

All three products, the D-Link Home Monitoring Starter Kit with a MSRP of $149.99, the D-Link Home Energy Monitoring Starter Kit at $99.99 MSRP, and the D-Link 3G Door Phone priced at $199.99 MSRP are expected to be available in the second quarter of this year through the company’s vast network of retail and etail outlets, and at D-Link’s online store, http://www.dlinkshop.com. Additional details for free and paid-subscription services for the D-Link Home Monitoring Starter Kit will be available when the product ships.

So these do look very interesting, so expect more details and a review later in the year.
