HP Start Selling and Supporting Drobo Products

A few days ago we announced the newly updated Drobo S, now today there is an announcement that Drobo has a new channel partner – HP.

16-11-2010 14-32-18

There will be 200 HP call center people trained on Drobo, so that really does go to show HP’s commitment here.

So that is a very interesting move on the part of HP, considering they have competing products in the MedisSmart and DataVault range.

Now We Know – WD AV-25 Hard Drives

Western Digital offers a line of 2.5” drives made specifically for HTPCs, PVRs, surveillance video and digital signs. These drives use a 3 Gb/s interface, 32 MB cache and range in size from 160GB to 500GB. If you are looking for a 2.5” drive for your HTPC then the WD AV-25 line is for you.

WD AV-25

.

Western Digital WD AV-25 Hard Drives

The AV-25 drives are cool, quiet and draw less than 2 WATTS during operation! They also sport a whopping 1 million hours MTBF!

image

WD AV-25 Specifications

The AV-25 series has some very respectable specs for a 2.5” drive. This drive would be a great addition to a small form factor HTPC. These drives have the same latency as Scorpio Black drives and twice the cache!

WD AV-25

Purchase and Warranty

The drives come with a long warranty period.

WD AV-25

.

I bought my 500GB WD AV-25 from Newegg for $60. My specific model is:

Western Digital AV-25 WD5000BUDT 500GB 5400 RPM 32MB Cache 2.5″ SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal AV Hard Drive

100_4783

.Newegg sells four different models so check them out!

.

Drive Installation / Replacement

The WD AV-25 drive is just like any other 2.5” drive. Four screws and two cable connections was all it took to replace the drive in my HTPC. I use mine as the video drive where my WMC stores all of the recorded shows before it moves them to my WHS.

WD AV-25

..

The drive acoustics are less than 25 dB but I still mounted mine with rubber grommets to the metal case. Your drive may be quiet but the vibrations on the case can ruin the quietness of your HTPC.

WD AV-25

..

Check out these drives next time you are going to perform an upgrade or build a new HTPC.

Now We Know,

Tim

Review of the Vidabox CubeCase Mini-ITX Chassis

Vidabox, makers of those high end Media Center machines, have recently released a Mini-ITX case called the CubeCase, and if you are planning on building your own Media Center or Windows Home Server Vail machine, then you should take a look at this.

IMG_3069

Here is what Vidabox say about the CubeCase:

VidaBox has done it again – CubeCase is the perfect chassis for your next DIY home server or mini Media Center! Unlike other typical chassis, CubeCase has been engineered from scratch by VidaBox to deliver the best possible features, field-serviceability, and cooling performance that today’s advanced builders demand. As a culmination of our years of building tons of servers, CubeCase is the ONLY Mini-ITX chassis that packs so many features into a small, stylish case, such as:

Tons of HDD space:
We challenge you to find another mini-ITX case this small that has 3 HDD bays, a full sized optical drive bay, AND a full-sized expansion slot! (If you find one, let us know! We couldn’t find one to buy, which is why we designed and built our own!)
(2) fully field-servicable Hard Drives:
Opening up the case after your initial build is alot of work, even knowing you’ll need to upgrade your storage at some point. The VidaBox CubeCase makes this easy with its dual-field servicable HDD drive bays, so you can easily plug in additional hard drives as you please!
Keep other part costs down:
Full size optical drives are important to keep costs down. Many short-height cases “cheat” and use slimline drives to keep more HDD space inside – but have you seen how much a slimeline Blu-ray drive is vs. a full size one? VidaBox CubeCase lets you take advantage of sub-$50 full sized Blu-ray drives!
Full size expansion port
Conventional small form factor cases generally means you have to sacrifice powerful graphics or performance – but this is not so with the VidaBox CubeCase! Add in your favorite expansion/add-on cards with CubeCase’s cleverly positioned expansion port for the best of both worlds with this small and powerful case design!!
The Power Supply (PSU) IS included
To keep sizes small, VidaBox CubeCase includes a 300W SFX power supply that powers your entire system! It also includes plugs for power-hungry, dedicated graphics cards as well so you can use this case for a server or a powerful, mini-form factor Media Center!
Efficient Heat/thermal transfer:
With its reduced size, heat removal is extremely important in these types of cases. A large 120mm fan on the front pulls in clean, fresh air, and the rear build-in PSU exhausts the heated air out the back for cool, long term performance.
Quiet performance – minimal fan noise:
We strategically placed the air intake fan right by the front area, and in concert with natural convection through the cubeCase’s side openings plus the PSU in the back, this allows you to enjoy adequate airflow while minimizing noise. For even quieter performance, One can always replace this fan with a quieter one, or just run it without a fan if only 1 HDD was installed instead.

What’s In The Box?

The box is very well packaged and actually shows the case on the outside rather than the usual plain packaging. My box was a little banged up but that was the courier and not Vidaboxes fault.

Taking A Look At The CubeCase

The case looks stunning, there really isn’t any other word to describe it.

There is a front fan along with the drive bay.

    IMG_3070

The whole of the front of the case opens outwards giving access to the 2 removal drive bays.

    IMG_3072

Just a click on the drive bay button pops open the latch and enables you to slide out the bay.

    IMG_3074

Adding a hard drive is simple – you just put it in place and then screw it in, then just slide the bay back into the case – very very simple!

    IMG_3073

Both sides have vents to help with the air flow.

Drobo S DAS Device Now with USB 3.0

    8

The Drobo S DAS device from Data Robotics has been around for a little while, but now there is a new USB 3.0 version.

    16-11-2010 14-32-1816-11-2010 14-32-39

    16-11-2010 14-33-0516-11-2010 14-34-36

Here is what Data Robotics say about the new USB 3.0 version of the Drobo S:

Say hello to the world’s most advanced USB 3.0 array. In addition to blazing fast transfer speeds for creative professionals and small businesses, the all-new Drobo S features USB 3.0 technology that delivers the most expandable, future-proof solution available today. Drobo S offers an unbeatable combination of automated protection, instant and perpetual expansion, and high-performance making it ideal for all of your primary and backup storage needs.

Built on award-winning BeyondRAIDTM technology with single- or dual-drive redundancy, Drobo S protects your data without any user interaction, even in the event of multiple drive failures. It can hold up to five hot-swappable drives, for on-the-fly drive capacity expansion with zero downtime.

Your Personal Speed Demon: USB 3.0, eSATA, FireWire 800

Have a need for speed? With the new USB 3.0 interface on the Drobo S, data transfer is up to 50% faster than FireWire 800. USB 3.0 offers backward compatibility with all existing USB 2.0 systems, and the Drobo S features a triple interface with eSATA and FireWire 800 to ensure you’ll have a high-performance connection for virtually any system.

World’s Most Expandable USB 3.0 Array

The new Drobo S is the most expandable USB 3.0 product available today, with “industry first” support for multiple storage volumes that provide capacity up to 32TB and beyond. Only BeyondRAID allows you to instantly expand your capacity by simply adding a drive or replacing the smallest drive with a larger one, even when all five drive bays are full. The unique ability to mix and match drive capacities, brands, and speeds ensures you will be able to take advantage of larger drives as they become available.

    Protection from Two Drive Failures

Enable the dual-drive redundancy option to protect your data from failure of up to two hard drives. It’s all done with a single click, and without ever losing access to your data. Running out of space? Switch back to single-drive redundancy at any time. Unlike moving between traditional RAID 5 and RAID 6, there’s no need to reformat or migrate data off of Drobo S, potentially saving you hours or days of downtime.

    Self-Healing Technology

With the self-healing technology now incorporated into Drobo S, your data is safer than ever. Even when sitting idle, Drobo S will continually examine the blocks and sectors on every drive, flagging questionable areas. This preemptive “scrubbing” helps ensure your data is being written only to the healthy areas of your drives, and that your data is always safe. Even if a drive fails, Drobo S keeps your data in the safest state possible, utilizing the available space on the remaining healthy drives.

    Windows, Mac, Linux

Drobo S connects to Windows, Mac, and Linux2 systems and supports NTFS, HFS+, EXT3, and FAT32 file formats. Everyone can take advantage of simple, powerful, complete BeyondRAID data protection.

You can learn more about the Drobo S from the Data Robotics website.

I think that over the next few months we will be seeing more and more USB 3.0 devices hitting the streets.

Icy Dock Introduce the MB973SP-B 3 In 2 SATA Backplane

    3

It seems this week Icy Dock have a few new products, one of which is a 3 in 2 SATA backplane for adding 3 x 3.5” SATA hard drives into a case’s 2 available 5.25” bays. It’s called the MB973SP-B.

    16-11-2010 10-42-4416-11-2010 10-43-01

    16-11-2010 10-43-3516-11-2010 10-43-19

Here is what Icy Dock has to say about the MB973SP-B:

Introducing the new face of Icy Dock screw-less technology, the MB973SP-B 3-in-2 SATA Backplane. This product allows the user to install 3 x 3.5” SATA hard drives into a computer case’s 2 available 5.25” device bays. Using our world renowned screw-less technology, no screws or tools are required to insert or eject the drives making hot swapping a completely hassle free experience.

The front of the device includes childproof power buttons for each drive which require the button to be pressed slightly deeper than normal to ensure that a drive is not accidentally turned off by bumping into it or rubbing against it. These power buttons also act as an LED indicator showing drive power and activity. Similarly, each drive door has a multi-locking latch mechanism to prevent a door from being opened easily, making it an ideal solution for systems where IT and non-IT personnel have access. Also on the front are USB and eSATA ports to quickly and easily connect external storage peripherals, especially useful for cases that do not have front/top port access.

On the rear of the MB973SP-B is a monster 80mm cooling fan to pull cool air from the front ventilation slots, over the drives, and exhaust the warm air out through the rear ventilation slots. The fan also features an “on-demand” power system, so that the fan is only powered on if a drive’s power is on.

So even if all 3 slots are filled, the fan will only spin if one of the drives is powered on. And if the included fan is not enough, it can be upgraded to use most aftermarket 80mm case fans that use a 2 or 3 pin connector, giving the user a wide range of choices according to their preferences. To further the user’s customization, a 3 speed fan control is built in letting the user choose between high, low, or auto. The auto setting uses our Smart Cooling Technology to adjust fan speed according to the cooling requirements of the drives. An internal SATA cable and USB header connector are also built into the rear for easy connection to the systems motherboard or add-on card.

    Feature:

    * Fits 3 x 3.5” SATA HDD into 2 x 5.25” Device Bays
    * Screw-less, tool-less design for genuine plug &play and hot swap use
    * Compatible with SATA 6 Gb/sec
    * Stylish aluminum construction for durability and heat dissipation
    * 80mm cooling fan for maximum air flow
    * On-demand power system – Fan power only when a drive is powered on
    * Fan is replaceable with aftermarket fans that use 2-pin or 3-pin connectors
    * 3 speed fan control including Smart Cooling Technology providing temperature
    * Front and rear ventilation slots
    * Front side USB and eSATA ports for convenient external storage connections
    * Individual power switches and LEDs for each drive
    * Child-proof power buttons to avoid accidental power shut down
    * Multi-locking door latches to prevent accidental drive ejection
    * Internal SATA cable and USB header cable built into rear of device

You can learn more on the Icy Dock product page.

Icy Dock Introduce the MB662USEB-2S Dual Raid Enclosure

Icy Dock have just introduced their new dual raid enclosure, called the MB662USEB-2S, which is compatible with both Windows and Macs.

    15-11-2010 20-58-2715-11-2010 20-58-44

    15-11-2010 20-59-0015-11-2010 20-59-11

Here is what Icy Dock says about the MB662USEB-2S:

Icy Dock is proud to introduce its upgrade version of the dual bay RAID enclosure that set the standard for professionals, the MB662USEB-2S. This product combines the feature sets of the current MB662 Series into the ultimate RAID device for media professionals and individuals looking for performance, backups and storage expansion.

Similar to the current models, the MB662USEB-2S still utilizes an aluminum construction so that it is light weight for portability, and has the necessary material for optimal heat dissipation and durability. To help with temperature management, the cooling fan has been upgraded to an ultra quiet Sunon MagLev 40mm fan, and still features a speed control to allow the user flexibility according to his or her sound or cooling preferences.

The main addition to this new version is the quad interface design, allowing for USB 2.0, eSATA, FireWire 800, and FireWire 400, giving the user access to the best performance whether the data is needed on a Mac, Windows, and Linux system. Also, using an updated RAID controller, this unit can now accept 2TB drives in each slot to use in all 3 RAID modes, and thanks to a new concatenated JBOD mode, the user can have a combined storage volume without the risk for total data loss. The data is written across a single drive, and when it becomes full, it moves to the next drive, so if a drive fails, only the data on that drive will be lost. This is perfect for media players and NAS routers where a single combined volume is ideal. And as always, RAID 0 and RAID 1 are built in to offer blazing fast performance or maximum data redundancy.

    Feature:

    * Support 2TB+ in each slot for all 3 RAID modes.
    * MB662 Series fits 2 x 3.5” SATA I/II hard drives for maximum storage.
    * Plug & Play USB 2.0 + eSATA + FireWire800 combo with OXFORD936DS chipset.
    * FireWire 400 capability via FW800 to FW400 converter cable, supplied in the box.
    * Built-in hardware RAID controller allows Three different RAID configurations:
    RAID 0 (FAST), RAID 1 (SAFE), & JBOD (Concatenation/Spanned)
    * No additional software and hardware required for RAID capabilities.
    * User friendly Screw-less design just plug in the hard drive and play.
    * 40 mm Sunon cooling fan with adjustable speed control.

    * Multi-drive exchangeability & maintenance capabilities.
    * Built with Solid Aluminum Construction for body.
    * Built in security slot for security cable kit.
    * Compatible for both Windows and Mac.

You can learn more on the Icy Dock website.

Installing the Zune Software on Windows Home Server Code Name Vail

James over at the Tenniswood blog had a problem trying to install the Zune software on his Windows Home Server Code Name Vail, until he came across a work around.

    Screen-shot-2010-11-11-at-09_29

    Here is what James said:

I came across a problem installing the Zune Software on my home server, as it doesn’t support server operating systems like Windows Home Server VAIL. After hunting around I finally pick up this tip for routing around the microsoft restrictions imposed by the installer app.

    1. Download the software.
    2. Login to the computer with the local administrator account.
    3. Change the .exe extension to .zip, then upzip the file.
    4. Browse to the \packages folder.
    5. Right-Click on Zune-x64.msi and click Install
    6. Follow the prompts like a regular install of the software.

    Nice one James!
