Using Microsoft Kinect to Control Boxee and XBMC with KinEmote

We have posted a few stories about people using the Microsoft Kinect device to control all sorts of thing away from the Xbox, but this is the first one we have posted that might be of real interest to a lot of people – and its called KinEmote. So how long I wonder until a Media Center version?

KinEmote

KinEmote is an easy-to-use application that allows Windows users to navigate the menus of Boxee and XBMC media portals using nothing but hand gestures that are captured by Microsoft’s Kinect or any other OpenNI compliant camera.

John Simons and Joel Griffin Dodd release ‘KinEmote’ remote control software for MicroSoft Windows and Kinect.

KinEmote is an easy-to-use application that allows Windows users to navigate the menus of Boxee and XBMC media portals using nothing but hand gestures that are captured by MicroSoft’s Kinect camera.

“Many developers are doing wonderful things with the Kinect camera,” says Griffin Dodd, “While many of these projects are extremely impressive, they haven’t really provided the casual user with something they can enjoy on a daily basis. That’s why we developed KinEmote, a practical application that anyone can just install and use. Of course we also wanted to give people something fun to play with for Christmas”.

KinEmote is built around OpenNI and NITE Middleware provided by PrimeSense Inc. “I’m really impressed that PrimeSense stepped up and released open source software for anyone to develop around.” says Simons, “They have inspired developers like myself to try something new in the hope of giving back to the community as a whole. Projects like XBMC are wonderful examples of the power of open source, I’m glad we can support Boxee & XBMC in a new way by providing practical tools to leverage the power of the awesome Kinect hardware.”

You can watch a video of it in action below:

Merry Christmas To Everyone

6

Tim and I just wanted to take this opportunity to wish all our readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

UWHS Xmas 2010

This year has certainly been an interesting one – ok, the majority of that being the last month or so what with the announcement that Drive Extender has been removed from Vail and that HP have dropped out of the Windows Home Server market.

We are often asked if we think that this is the end for Windows Home Server. And I think, and hope, that the answer is NO. At the moment it is a tough sell for someone with a working V1 Windows Home Server to upgrade to Vail (as it stands today), but new users, who many not want or need that functionality that Drive Extender brought to the mix might not care.

Only time will tell – and you can bet that here at UWHS we will be covering it!

If you haven’t yet read it, take a look at Tim’s Christmas post, it’s brilliant. Yes, it’s a repeat, but isn’t that what Christmas is all about? Smile

So what will 2011 have in store for UWHS? Well, Tim and I are toying with a number of new ideas for the site, including a face lift and a possible site name change! I know!!! Don’t worry drinking game fans, we will of course transfer over all drinks to work with whatever we change the name of the site to, if we change it.

You might ask yourself why change the name? Well, to be honest, the site has grown considerably and we cover a lot more than just Windows Home Server, so we figured maybe it was time for a change. Don’t worry though, Windows Home Server is still top of our agenda, no matter what we do.

And we will of course be asking you, our readers, for your comments, feedback, suggestions and help. In fact, if you have any suggestions feel free to contact us – you never know, we might include them and you might win a prize!

So everyone have a safe and joyful Christmas and thank you for making UWHS what it is.

tWHSas the Friday night before Christmas Again

A little fable for your enjoyment…

Happy Holidays

Equipment Needed:

  • Eggnog (Captain Morgan’s optional)
  • Sense of Humor (Available at your local Walgreens or CVS)

And so it…

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house,

Not a creature was stirring, not even a Microsoft Wireless 6000 Mouse;

The computers were sleeping on the network with care,

In hopes that Windows Home Server Backup soon would be there.

The children were nestled all sung in their beds,

While visions of Windows Media Center danced in their heads;

And the wife with her netbook, and mine removed from my lap,

Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

Happy Holidays

When inside the office there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from the bed to hear a clicking hard drive platter;

Away to the laptop I flew like a flash,

Remote Desktop the server, to diagnose the crash.

Admin and password and the trusty Console,

Gave the hope that this sound, away it would go;

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

But a glowing red error and file conflicts listed here.

Happy Holidays

With an outdated driver and firmware SD1A

I knew in a moment it must be the Seagate;

More rapid than eagles the conflict errors they came,

It hummed and it clicked while I called it bad names.

Now, sh&#head, now f*&kstain, now d*$kwad and a$$*ole,

On restart, on error log, on to disk manager I go;

To the side of the server, to the bay of the drive,

If I do not stop cursing I will wake up my wife.

Happy Holidays

As shiet that hits fans would then start to fly,

I shut down the server and unplugged the drive;

So out to the garage, the slippers and I flew,

To a drawer full of old IDE drives, I hope a SATA one too.

And then, in a twinkling, I saw in the drawer,

An old My Book World Edition that I had dropped on the floor;

As I drew in my head, and was turning around,

To the work bench I went with the drive I had found.

Happy Holidays

It was made in all white, from head to rubber feet,

And the sides were slightly scratched from being dropped on concrete;

A bundle of power cords were attached to the back,

Crap, this might not work, as I heard plastic crack.

My eyes – ah who cares, garage damn cold and I so weary

My cheeks were like roses, my nose like a cherry;

A little drool from my mouth was about to ice over,

Onto the beard of my chin, well it is a goatee, a summer leftover.

Happy Holidays

So the Craftsman screwdriver was jammed, tight in plastic teeth,

The cover would not budge, I would have to get underneath;

But then I remembered, there had to be a trick,

And it shook when I opened it, with just one simple click.

Inside was the 500GB SATA, a trusty WD drive,

And I laughed when I thought it could be brought back alive;

A shake and a turn and a twist of a screw head,

Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

Happy Holidays

I spoke not a word, and went straight back to the case,

And removed the old drive, this one in its place;

Replacing the cables and side cover I arose;

And giving a nod, Power On, here it goes.

As she sprang to life once again, the drive gave me a whistle,

And away flew the error messages, like the down of a thistle;

And the wife heard me exclaim, as I turned off the light,

Drive Extender for all, and to all a good-night!

Happy Holidays To Everyone!

Welcome to the Christmas edition of the show and this week Garry, Andrew and I are joined by Bjorn Morris from Cybersmart systems. Bjorn is installing iPads as part of this Windows Media Center custom installs and he expains how the iPad has moved home automation away from the TV screen to the mobile device.

The Home Server Show 117 Out Now

Dave and the guys over at the Home Server Show have just released show number 117, and its a little different this week because Skype was down.

home_server_show_small

Here is what Dave has to say about this weeks show:

Christmas without Skype!  We recorded this episode a little differently this time and you will certainly hear the difference.  Skype was down so Jim and John, with the ustreamers help, cobbled up a quick solution and off we went!  It’s still a great show but I apologize for the audio.  We talk about Jim’s Drobo post and what is coming next and our featured guest is Christian Johnson.  Christian shares his latest Add-In with us and it’s upcoming release date.

As usual you can listen to the show here.

Something Funny for the Holidays

0

As it is almost Christmas (where has this year gone), I thought it might be amusing to share this with everyone. Enjoy!

Many, many years ago, the Two Ronnies did a very funny sketch involved hose and fork handles (those of you reading this who remember it will know what I am talking about).

Now for Christmas there is an updated version, and for anyone who likes technology, you will get a kick out of this! And thank you to the BBC!

Enjoy – and Merry Christmas!

Hands On Review of the Griffin Stylus for the Apple iPad and iPhone

If you use an Apple iPad or iPhone for any length then your fingers might get a little sore. If that’s the case you could do with using a stylus – and Griffin has one just for you!

IMG_3245

Griffin’s Stylus is a balanced pointer with a soft rubber tip custom designed to mimic your finger. The omni-directional tip adapts to any writing style and doesn’t care whether you’re left-handed or right-handed. Keeps your touchscreen free of fingerprints and smudges as it gives increased control over any touchscreen operation. Perfect for sketching, drawing, gaming and photography apps, or any use where you need a finer degree of control than your finger can offer. Stylus includes an integrated clip that attaches to a pocket in your bag or a pencil loop in your iPad case.

Features
  • High-sensitivity, omni-directional point won’t scratch or smudge your touchscreen
  • Great for right- and left-handed writers
  • Integrated clip attaches to strap, pocket or a pencil loop in your iPad case
  • Use with any app for greater comfort and control

What’s In The Box?

The box is very small, and just contains the stylus – but then what more do you really need?

IMG_3243 IMG_3244

The stylus itself is very small and lightweight – as you can see it about the same length as an iPhone 4. Its length is 4.3” and its weight is just 0.4 oz.

IMG_3246

Final Thoughts

I really like this stylus – I found it very easy to use and I didn’t need to apply very much pressure at all when using it. I used it on both an iPad and an iPhone 4 and I have to say it felt a little bit strange going back to using my finger after using the stylus.

If you use either of these devices for any length of time then this stylus is a must have, and at less than $20 it’s a bargain. I actually bought mine in Tesco.

You can learn more from the Griffin website.
