My only negative comment at this point is that the quality wasn’t great, but at least I could watch something I missed on my iPad.

Automating Windows Server Solutions Add-In Package Builds to Support In-Place Upgrades

My friend and fellow WHS MVP Sam Wood from Tentacle Software has just published a very long and detailed article on Automating Windows Server Solutions Add-In Package Builds to Support In-Place Upgrades. If you are a developer, or thinking of developing add-ins for WHS 2011, this is a must read.

image_thumb_6

This is how Sam starts the article:

The Windows Server Solutions SDK gives us some great new functionality for deploying Add-In packages:

  • A proper upgrade process
  • Signing
  • Client installers that can be automatically applied to any joined PCs
  • EULA support
  • Localization support

But, because there’s no such thing as a free lunch, the new functions come with added complexity. As I’ve discussed previously, in order for you Add-In to support in-place upgrades there are a bunch of properties that need to be changed whenever you build a new version of your Add-In:

  1. Package Version in AddIn.xml
  2. ServerBinary File Version in AddIn.xml
  3. Product Version in your installer project (<product>.wxs if you’re using WiX)
  4. Assembly File Version and Assembly Version in AssemblyInfo.cs for any changed assemblies

It’s really easy to forget one of those and break the upgrade process. So, how do we take the pain away?

What follows is my solution for build automation with WSSX files. This is only what works for me, and there are certainly other ways to accomplish the same thing, so feel free to offer your methods in the comments below.

This is going to be a long one so go grab a coffee!

StableBit DrivePool for Windows Home Server Build 1919 Now Available

It was only yesterday that there was an update, and today the latest beta version of the Windows Home Server Drive Extender replacement StableBit DrivePool build 1919 has just been released.

600px-Stablebit_drivepool_screen_thu[2]

  • Combine all your hard drives into one big storage pool (except the system drive with the OS).
  • Add and remove drives from the pool at any time without re-partitioning or manually moving folders.
  • Create duplicated folders on the storage drive pool that are protected against single drive failure. If a drive fails on which a duplicated file was stored, the contents of that file will remain readable even without the drive.
  • All your data is stored in standard NTFS files. You can always access your files even if the Windows Home Server completely crashes or this add-in can’t be used.

The changes in this version are:

1.0.0.1919 (restart required if upgrade) ———-

* [D] Fix for error 0x800705AA (insufficient resources) when writing a file.

* Fixed race condition in code responsible for force closing access to open files. (used when removing a drive and other places).

  • Average 165 MB/sec Writing, 195 MB/sec Reading1
  • Scale up to 72TB with Synology DX12112
  • VMware / Citrix / Hyper-V Compliance
  • 2 LAN with Failover and Link Aggregation Support
  • Fit to Business Environment
  • Rich Business Applications

30-06-2011 11-24-1930-06-2011 11-24-2930-06-2011 11-24-3730-06-2011 11-24-4530-06-2011 11-24-54

Here is some more information from Synology:

High Performance, High Data Availability

With the Link Aggregation enabled, Synology DS2411+ delivers an average 165 MB/sec writing speed under RAID 5 configuration in a Windows environment, and 195 MB/sec reading. The 2 LAN with failover support and hot-swappable drives will ensure continual service uptime should the drives need replacement or the unexpected LAN failure. Businesses need a strong foundation to face mission-critical tasks, so the Synology DS2411+ delivers high-performance with high data availability ensuring access when it’s needed.

Fit to Business Environment

Windows ADS integration allows the Synology DS2411+ to quickly and easily fit in an existing business network environment with no need to recreate users’ accounts on the Synology DS2411+. The User Home feature minimizes the administrator’s effort in creating a private shared folder for a large amount of users.

Windows ACL support on DS2411+ provides much finer-grained access control and efficient privilege settings, allowing IT staffs to set up privileges to files and folders on DS2411+ through their familiar Windows user interface. The privileges set on Windows ACL will be applied to all access entries, including AFP, FTP, File Station, NFS and WebDAV. The secure privilege offers IT staff peace of mind, no worries about any loopholes.

iSCSI and Virtualization Ready

With the iSCSI support in DiskStation Manager (DSM), the Synology DS2411+ provides a seamless storage solution for virtualization servers, such as VMware, Hyper-V, and Citrix. It is the ideal alternative to SAN solution for businesses. Affordable and cost-effective, iSCSI allows SMB users to consolidate storage into data center storage arrays while providing hosts with the illusion of locally-attached disks.

Robust & Affordable Scalability Up to 72 TB

When the storage capacity of the Synology DS2411+ is nearing its limits, it can easily be expanded by the Synology DX12113. The Synology DX1211 securely connects to the Synology DS2411+ via an Infiniband cable that carries 12 Gb/s SATA signal to ensure maximum throughput. The Synology DX1211 can directly expand the existing storage on the Synology DS2411+ to a maximum 72 TB capacity.

Full-featured Business Applications

The Synology DS2411+ runs on the renowned operating system, Synology DiskStation Manager, offering comprehensive applications and features designed specifically for businesses. Comprehensive network protocol support assures seamless file sharing across Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms.

Internet file access is simplified by the encrypted FTP server and the web-based file explorer, Synology File Station. HTTPS, firewall, and IP auto-block support ensure file sharing over the Internet is protected at a high security level.

A wealth of additional features allows the Synology DS2411+ to replace several pieces of network hardware. Synology Web Station with support for PHP/MySQL content allows for the hosting of up to 30 websites on a single Synology DS2411+. Synology Surveillance Station offers a centralized interface to safeguard the office environments by deploying IP cameras throughout the network. The built-in Mail Server turns a Synology DS2411+ into a mail server with only few steps of installation and the USB printer sharing capability minimizes businesses’ printing cost by sharing printing resources throughout the office.

Energy Efficient Design

Synology DiskStations are designed and developed with energy efficiency in mind. Compared with the average PC counterparts, Synology DiskStations consume a relatively low amount of power and have the hard drives hibernate when not in use.

All Synology products are produced with RoHS compliant parts and packed with recyclable packing materials. Synology acknowledges the responsibility as a global citizen to continually work to reduce the environmental impact of every product produced.
