Tranquil Announce their MonStor SSi Servers

Do you have a large storage need? If the answer is yes, how does up to 160TB sound to you? If you like the sound of that, or are just curious, check out the Tranquil MonStor SSi Server range.

image

This new range uses Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials.

Here is what Tranquil say:

2TB, 5TB, 10TB or more? After supplying storage servers for many years, we’re always amazed how much data our customers want to store – > 20TB, > 40TB or more!!

Doing that easily and safely previously could only be done at high cost, or with multiple untidy boxes.

With MonStor SSi systems (due late August 2011) all that will change.

Adobe Edge – Motion and Interaction Design for HTML5

Today saw Adobe release an early preview of it’s new motion and interaction design tool for HTML5, called Adobe Edge.

edge_557x200

Motion and Interaction Design for HTML5

Adobe® Edge is a new web motion and interaction design tool that allows designers to bring animated content to websites, using web standards like HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS3.

Edge will be updated regularly to add new functionality, stay ahead of evolving web standards, and incorporate user feedback to provide the best functionality and experience possible. This is an early look at Edge with more capabilities to come.

Here is what Adobe said this morning:

Adobe Releases Early Preview of New HTML5 Web Motion and Interaction Design Tool

Company Invites Community Into Development Process to Shape Final Product

London. — Aug. 1, 2011 Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced the first public preview release of Adobe® Edge, a new HTML5 web motion and interaction design tool that allows web designers to bring animation, similar to that created in Flash® Professional, to websites using standards likes HTML, JavaScript and CSS. Because of rapid changes around HTML5, the company is adopting an open development methodology for Adobe Edge and is releasing the software on the Adobe Labs site much earlier than normal in the development process – before it even reaches beta – in order to allow user feedback to help shape the final product.

While in public preview, Adobe Edge will be a no-charge download that web designers are encouraged to explore and provide feedback on, to help shape future preview releases. To download the software, visit http://www.labs.adobe.com/uk

Adobe Edge, first shown at Adobe MAX 2010, is ideal for designers who want an efficient way to leverage Web standards like HTML to create Web content with motion and transitions. Adobe Edge is being designed as a fast and lightweight professional-grade tool that complements Adobe’s existing Web tools, such as Adobe Dreamweaver® CS5.5, Adobe Flash Professional CS5.5 and Adobe Flash Builder® 4.5 software.

“Over the last year Adobe has delivered on several significant HTML5 milestones including contributions to jQuery, submitting code to WebKit, and enhanced HTML5 output in Creative Suite® 5.5,” said Paul Gubbay, vice president of Design and Web Engineering, Adobe. “Now, with Adobe Edge, we’re taking our HTML5 tooling to a whole new level and look forward to getting some really useful feedback from the community over the next few months, as we refine the product.”

The Adobe Edge preview works natively with HTML. It enables users to add motion to existing HTML documents without hampering design integrity of CSS-based layouts, and it also enables users to easily create visually rich content from scratch, using familiar drawing tools that produce HTML elements styled with CSS3. Users can import standard Web graphics assets such as SVG, PNG, JPG and GIF files and style them using CSS3. The design stage utilises WebKit to enable design, preview and manipulation of content with incredible fidelity. The innovative timeline feature is both familiar for creative professionals and breaks new ground in animation productivity to enable users to define and customise motion applied to HTML elements with extreme precision. Content created with Edge is designed to work on modern browsers including those on Android, BlackBerry Playbook™, iOS , HP webOS and other smartphone mobile devices as well as Firefox™, Google Chrome™, Safari™ and Internet Explorer 9™.

This Adobe Edge public preview is available today on Adobe Labs as a no-charge download for anyone wanting to explore adding motion and animation to their HTML workflow or HTML animation to their skill set. Creative professionals are encouraged to dive into the public preview and provide their feedback at www.labs.adobe.com. The Adobe Edge preview is expected to be updated regularly as new functionality is added.

This summer Adobe is sponsoring the Expressive Web Tour HTML5 Camps in cities that include San Francisco, Tokyo, New York City and London to continue providing further support to people interested in HTML5.

In addition, Adobe has launched a new online resource showcasing some of the newest and most expressive HTML5 and CSS3 features being added to the modern Web. The new site, which was released today in beta, was created using new HTML5 and CSS3 features.

About Adobe’s HTML5 Innovations

Adobe Edge is the latest development in the company’s HTML5 and Web standards strategy which also includes commitment to innovate open source platforms like Webkit, contributing to Web frameworks like jQuery and extending existing tools like Adobe Dreamweaver and Flash to bring the next generation of Web standards to Web designers and developers.

Pricing and Availability

Adobe Edge is immediately available worldwide for Mac and Windows platforms via a free download on Adobe Labs, www.labs.adobe.com. For more information including system requirements, visit www.adobe.com/go/edgepreview.

CloudBerry Backup: Introducing Block Level Backup for large files – BETA

CloudBerry Labs have just introduced a new block level backup for large files beta for it’s CloudBerry S3 Backup program.

Here is what they said:

CloudBerry S3 Backup is a powerful Windows program that automates backup and restore processes to Amazon S3 cloud storage.

As always we are adding features to make it easier for our customers to use the functionality and the Block Level Backup has always been one of the sought after features. With the CloudBerry Backup release 2.3 we are adding the functionality that will back up only the modified blocks of the files to the cloud storage making the overall backup process faster and more efficient. Block Level Backup is useful if you want to copy large files such as SQL Server Backup files, MS Exchange Database, Outlook PST files and virtual machine images.

To use Block Level Backup you should choose the Simple Mode in the Backup Wizard. Also, check Use differential copy checkbox.

image001

The beauty of the CloudBerry Backup implementation is that you can access the files with any other tools and CloudBerry Backup is the only client program available on the market that doesn’t require any additional server software to process the modified blocks.

Limitation: there is one important limitation though. You can only use block level backup feature for the files > 5 GB. This is the current limitation of Amazon S3 copy API. Once this limitation is removed on the Amazon side CloudBerry Backup will automatically support smaller files.

Note: Block Level Backup currently in BETA and we don’t recommend using it for production purposes yet.

Note: If you use block level backup encryption and versioning functionality is not available. In the future we are also going to add the block level functionality to the advanced mode.

As always we would be happy to hear your feedback and you are welcome to post a comment.

What’s next

we are currently working on adding the block level functionality to the advanced mode that will not have a file size limitation and this functionality is expected to come out by the end of August 2011.

Note: this post applies to CloudBerry Backup 2.3 and later.

Tranquil Release MonStor Storage Manager Add-in for Windows Home Server 2011

Today saw the release of the first Storage Manager add-in for Windows Home Server 2011 – the Tranquil PC MonStor add-in.

MonStor, the Storage Management Add In for Windows Home Server 2011 and Windows Storage Server Server 2008 R2 Essentials, based on DriveBender.

Here is what Tranquil said:

After a short delay on the release of MonStor, Tranquil PC are really pleased to see the product is now available.

The Drive Extender (DE), part of the original Windows Home Server, was a huge step forward in the IT world.  Being able to use mismatched HDDs in a ‘pool’ and then being able to protect (duplicate) data across multiple disks was simple brilliant.  There were a few downsides, and the worst being the difficulties (trust) in getting data back in the event of system failure (files and folders on removed data HDDs could be ‘seen’ on other PCs – but often these files were ‘ghosts’ of the file – which could have been on another disk somewhere).

But Microsoft, in their wisdom (or not), decided to remove DE from WHS2011 and WSS2008R2 Essentials (a 25 user version of WHS2011).  This was seen as a major problem, and many said the last nail in the coffin of Microsoft’s Home Server OS.

After reviewing the need / expectation requirements of our customers, Tranquil knew that any Home Server of the future would have to have an equally simple, effective, reliable and perhaps ‘better’ storage manager.  After reviewing the options available decided to work closely with Division-M to deliver such a solution.

Since that decision Tranquil engineers have been working closely with Division-M to optimise the WHS2011 Add In, on the Leo HS4 and Leo SS4 Servers.  There have been many ups as well as downs, as the software / service was put through it’s paces.

It had to be simple, effective, reliable, scalable and most importantly recoverable after a catastrophic system failure.  During 1000’s of hours of testing, and 1000’s of TBs of data transfers any undesirable issues were discovered and fixed.

MonStor now is ready, with recognition to Division-M and Tranquil engineers – a very big thank you.

The very simple ability to create a storage pool, with mismatch capacity hard disks, including 3TB disks, is really amazing.  The fast and effective way that MonStor balances the data across disks is equally impressive.

Monstor – supplied with all Leo HS4, Leo SS4, T2iWHS, SQA-5H and T7 2011 Servers.

MonStor costs £29.95 and is shipping now.

Advanced Admin Console 2011 Release Candidate Now Available

It’s been a few months since we last talked about the beta for Advanced Admin Console 2011. Well today the release candidate has been made available.

AAC_2011_RC

Here is the update:

The Advanced Admin Console Beta 2 has been out since March. Several thousand people have downloaded and used it since then and have given valuable feedback on its features and reported some minor bugs.

As a result, the Release Candidate (Version 0.9.5) includes a number of fixes, changes and some new functionality (see changelog below). Most importantly, I’ve decided to no longer offer AAC 2011 entirely for free.

I’ve been working on the Advanced Admin Console and my other first-generation Windows Home Server AddIns since December 2007. During the last year I have spent countless hours on developing AAC 2011 from scratch to make it one of the most popular and useful AddIns for the 2nd generation of Windows Home and Small Business Servers. I hope you’ll understand my decision to charge for the new version in order to compensate for my work.

Licensing changes

AAC 2011 will remain free for use on Windows Home Server 2011 and Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials if it’s not domain joined. However, on Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials and domain-joined Windows Storage Server 2008 Essentials (=business users) the latest version of AAC 2011 can only be used until December 1, 2011. After that date, business users must either purchase a license (pricing to be announced) or uninstall the AddIn. On Windows Home Server 2011 and non-domain-joined Windows Storage Server 2008 R2, AAC 2011 will work until after that date but switch to reduced functionality mode. In reduced functionality mode the Favorites Tab is disabled which means you can no longer access custom links and shortcuts. By purchasing a license you can keep using the full functionality of AAC 2011 on these platforms as well.

Summary of licensing changes

To sum it up, in regards to licensing the latest version of AAC 2011 includes the following changes:

  • Users are categorized in two groups: Home and Business. Users of Windows Home Server 2011 and non-domain-joined Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials are regarded as home users. Users of Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials and domain-joined Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials are regarded as business users.
  • AAC 2011 has a trial period of 30 days (extended to December 1, 2011 for the Release Candidate). During the trial period the full functionality can be used on all platforms.
  • When the trial period expires, AAC 2011 will switch to reduced functionality mode for home users and cease to function for business users. In reduced functionality mode the Favorites Tab is no longer available.
  • Home and business users can purchase a license to use the full functionality of AAC 2011 for an unlimited time.
  • Pricing is to be announced shortly.
Changelog for release 0.9.5:
  • FIXED: When running the Dashboard from a client PC resizing the Dashboard window may result in improper drawing of the AAC portion of the Dashboard window.
  • FIXED: Update notification didn’t work for some users.
  • FIXED: An exception occurred when a favorite was created via the web page context menu.
  • CHANGED: User interface polished (Removal of MS Office style context menus, other minor changes).
  • ADDED: IE ESC notification can now be disabled.
  • ADDED: Open, Open in new window and Properties now available for folder in Favorite Tree.
  • ADDED: Support for Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials.
  • ADDED: German localization.
  • ADDED: About dialog.
  • ADDED: Licensing system, Activation wizard.

Home Server Status for Windows Home Server 2011 Version 1.04 Released

Do you miss some of the information you used to see in WHS V1? Well Jerry Wade has written an app that brings that information to WHS 2011 and it’s just been updated to version 1.04.

Home-Server-Status_thumb_thumb

This is how Jerry describes this app:

It wasn’t long ago I told my friend, John, about my wonderful WHSv1. He decided to create his own box and use WHS 2011. However, he noticed that the icon did not give him the same information as mine such as, connectivity and backup in progress (eg: blue icon). After pondering over this, I decided to put my limited programming skills to work and develop a home server status application. So, without further hesitation, world, humbly meet: Home Server Status v1.0.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • .NET Framework 4
  • WHS 2011 Connector
  • Windows 7 32/64-bit machine. (Why only Windows 7? Well, it offered the features I wanted to see such as, the overlay icons and taskbar pinning.)

There is one minor issue when pinning Home Server Status to the taskbar: When you pin the icon to your taskbar, you will notice that the icon changes to the default. Just go back into settings and reselect the icon again or simply press close/update. This is not a problem with HSS, but with the way Microsoft creates their pinned icons and how I chose to handle them.

screen1_thumb_thumb screen2_thumb_thumb

This is what is included in version 1.04:

Change log –

1. Rewrote the entire connectivity and backup checkers. I am now using an even better multi-threading routine than before. This makes the application very responsive and just plain faster.

2. Icons added, by user request, to the context menu when using WHSv1 classic tray icons.

3. Once again, I have changed the settings interface. I was looking for something and just hadn’t found the right spot yet.

screen1

4. The installer is a little better, detects previous version, will uninstall previous for you, and allow you to start application at end.

5. I replaced in-app settings with registry settings. I got tired of being told this is my first time running the application. However, you will get this message when running v1.04 for the first time, and not after that.

Now it is time to start focusing on new features. I will be adding:

Backup Progress – Something that is actually a little more difficult since Microsoft chose to remove the facility all-together. I must say, I really miss my WHSv1!!

Looking at adding the ability to add your own Jumplist / Context menu items, for those who wish to add a little more to there menu.
