Windows Phone 7 Mango – Released to Manufacturing

Yesterday Microsoft released the next version of its Windows Phone 7 OS, codename Mango, to manufacturing.

At a recent Microsoft event, I saw Mango in action, and I have to say I was very impressed. Up until now I have been quite happy with my Apple iPhone 4, but having seen Mango in operation, I really liked what I saw.

So now that it has been RTM’d, when can you expect to see it? Well, that is another story all together. It is up to the carriers when they push it out to customers, so no specific dates yet, just watch this space.

I wanted to drop into the Windows Phone Blog briefly to update you on an important milestone. Earlier this morning, the Windows Phone development team officially signed off on the release to manufacturing (RTM) build of “Mango” – the latest version of the Windows Phone operating system. This marks the point in the development process where we hand code to our handset and mobile operator partners to optimize Mango for their specific phone and network configurations. Here on the Windows Phone team, we now turn to preparing for the update process. The Mango update for current Windows Phone handsets will be ready this fall, and of course will come pre-installed on new Windows Phones.

In May, we officially took the wraps off of Mango, a release including hundreds of new features that create a smarter and easier approach to communications and apps, while delivering the best web experience. My favorites?

· Our unique new email Conversation View which helps me to efficiently participate in long email discussions with my friends and co-workers.

· Threads that bring together my text, IM, and Facebook chat all into one conversation.

· App Multitasking, enabling me to efficiently work on my email, listen to music, and then pop in and out of Words By Post games when it is my turn. Mango also connects apps to search results and deepens integration within the Hubs like Music and Video and Pictures.

Drive Bender Beta 4 Release v1.1.6.1 Out Now

Today saw the third update in three days to Beta 4 of Drive Bender for Windows Home Server 2011 released, taking it to version v1.1.6.1.

Here is what is included in the beta 4 update:

Release v1.1.6.1 – beta (2011-07-27)
– Bug fix: Mount points could attempt to load before the required Windows services have completed starting. Prior to v1.1.6.1 this could cause the service to become unresponsive.
– Update: The pool no longer validates duplication when adding a drive (the exception here is if going from one drive in the pool to two). This improves the speed of adding a drive to the pool, and ensure that adding multiple drives does not cause continuies pool validation.
– Big fix: A number of interface fixes.

StableBit DrivePool for Windows Home Server Build 2939 Now Available

Today the latest beta version of the Windows Home Server Drive Extender replacement StableBit DrivePool build 2939 has just been released.

Combine all your hard drives into one big storage pool (except the system drive with the OS).
Add and remove drives from the pool at any time without re-partitioning or manually moving folders.
Create duplicated folders on the storage drive pool that are protected against single drive failure. If a drive fails on which a duplicated file was stored, the contents of that file will remain readable even without the drive.
All your data is stored in standard NTFS files. You can always access your files even if the Windows Home Server completely crashes or this add-in can’t be used.

Today Microsoft announced a new wireless headset and a media remote for the Xbox 360.

Xbox 360 Wireless Headset with Bluetooth

The device is compatible with Bluetooth devices such as mobile phones and PCs in addition to being able to connect to Xbox 360 through the console’s standard radio frequencies. The Xbox 360 Wireless Headset with Bluetooth will be available for $59.99 (U.S. ERP) and will be available in stores worldwide beginning early November 2011.

Xbox 360 Media Remote

Media playback controls include play/pause, skip forward, fast forward, skip back, fast back, and display to control DVD, CD, or streamed media. The TV controls include power on/off, volume up/down, mute and TV input. The Xbox 360 Media Remote’s menu navigation controls include A, B, X, Y buttons, D-pad navigation, back and select. Live TV, if provided on the Xbox 360 by your TV service provider, can also be controlled with the Xbox 360 Media Remote. This Xbox 360 Media Remote will be available worldwide for $19.99 (U.S. ERP) and will be in stores in early November 2011.

Today saw another update to Beta 4 of Drive Bender for Windows Home Server 2011 released, taking it to version v1.1.6.0.

Here is what is included in the beta 4 update:

Release v1.1.6.0 – beta (2011-07-26)
– Bug fix: Under very heavy load, 0 byte files could appear if validation was running at the same time (these would appear on the same physical drive as the duplicate file).
– Bug fix: Drive conversion was not loading the mount point correctly if a reboot was required during conversion.
– Bug fix: Fixed a number of issues with file tracking (used to determine opened / in use files). Under some circumstances this could cause a service crash.

OneNote Mobile for the Apple iPhone Now Available in the UK

Back in January we told you about OneNote being released for the iPhone. At the time it was only available for US iPhone owners. Until today…..

Today, Microsoft announces the availability of OneNote Mobile for iPhone 1.2 in UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. The popular Office 2010 program which lets people create notes using text, photos and audio clips and sync those notes with a free online version of OneNote, is now available as a free app for iPhone users.

The app, which has been available in the US since January 2011 is highly ranked in both the free app and productivity categories. Today sees a new version launching in several countries around the globe with improved functionality such as the ability to search across recent notebooks, an image capture feature and access to shared notebooks.

OneNote, the digital scrapbook which is held dear by millions of students, professionals and those looking to organise their life in a more fun and efficient way, will be available as a free iPhone app for a period of time.

Windows Phone users already enjoy a deeply integrated Office 2010 experience, as every Windows Phone comes with an Office Hub, which OneNote is an integral part of. With access to Office, OneNote and SharePoint Workspace all in one place, users can easily read, edit and share documents. With the additional power of Outlook Mobile, users stay productive and up to date while on the go.

Following the forthcoming Windows Phone OS update, codename ‘Mango’ this Fall 2011, Windows Phone users will also be able to author, edit, and collaborate with colleagues across a variety of cloud services including SkyDrive and Office365.

· Choose the notebooks that sync to your phone and appear on the Home screen – you’ll find this useful when you have SkyDrive notebooks that you don’t want to sync or view from your phone

· Set image size for photos you insert – choose smaller image sizes for faster syncing or larger sizes for higher fidelity images

· A new colour scheme that gives the app a lighter look and feel
