How to install RISC OS onto the Raspberry Pi

If you have ever wanted to install RISC OS onto your Raspberry Pi, Martin Hansen has a guide to help you do it!

CDW---Unboxing-the-Raspberry-Pi-009_[1]

This is how his great guide starts:

In this article I’m going to explain how the Raspberry Pi can be made to run RISC OS. In a few months time it will be possible to buy an SD card with RISC OS already written on it. Once this is available, you’ll be able to simply slot the SD card into the Pi, switch on, and the set up will boot into the RISC OS desktop. From there you can run software, or write your own. This article is about getting to that point under your own steam. As such it embraces the Raspberry Pi philosophy of not being afraid to get “hands-on” and being DIY minded.

Here is how to write RISC OS onto an SD card.

In addition to the Pi you will need;
• Micro USB Power Supply (DC 5 Volts, 1 Amp output)
• Class 4 SD card of 4 GB
• USB mouse & keyboard
• HDMI monitor & connecting cable
I bought the Maplin N19HX power supply for £14.99, and an (Intenso) SDHC memory card for £3.99. I already had suitable keyboard, mouse, and monitor with cable. Class 6 SD cards are suitable but problems have been reported with class 10. Power supplies rated less than 1 amp (1000 mA) are a source of problems.

StableBit DrivePool for Windows Home Server 2011 Beta 1.0.2.6326 released

There has been another beta build from CoveCube! StableBit DrivePool development marches on – now its version 1.0.2.6326.

600px-Stablebit_drivepool_screen_thu16

Here is how CoveCube describes this application:

  • Combine all your hard drives into one big storage pool (except the system drive with the OS).
  • Add and remove drives from the pool at any time without re-partitioning or manually moving folders.
  • Create duplicated folders on the storage drive pool that are protected against single drive failure. If a drive fails on which a duplicated file was stored, the contents of that file will remain readable even without the drive.
  • All your data is stored in standard NTFS files. You can always access your files even if the Windows Home Server completely crashes or this add-in can’t be used.

This beta version’s change log:

1.1.0.6326

* Final release build.

* Major new items since last release (1.0.1): – Improved read striping algorithm. – Network I/O prioritization for smoother streaming video. – Fast drive removal (option) for setups with many duplicated folders. – Improved balancing algorithm which will actively keep drives from getting full. – Many CoveFS changes / fixes, including an overhauled buffering and an updated locking model.

Fractal Design unveil the new Define R4 case

1

Fractal Design have today unveiled their new case, the Define R4.

FD-CA-DEF-R4-BL_1 FD-CA-DEF-R4-BL_3

The Fractal Design Define R4 is the latest in the Define Series of computer cases offering minimalistic and stunning Scandinavian design fused with maximum sound reduction, configurability and functionality.

The Define R4 side and front door panels are fitted with dense, sound-absorbing material making it a benchmark for noise reduction. Moreover, the Define R4 accommodates up to 8 HDDs, all modern graphics card sizes, and multiple ventilation options – including two standard Silent Series R2 hydraulic bearing fans – to keep internal components at optimal temperatures.

For ultimate functionality, the Define R4 features a front interface with USB 3.0 and an integrated three-speed fan controller behind the front panel door.

  • High density noise-reducing material for an optimal silent case – To achieve a high level of noise reduction, material with mass should be incorporated which is what we strive to achieve with the dense bitumen used on the side panels.
  • Patent pending ModuVent design allowing the user to choose between optimal silence or maximum airflow
  • Top HDD cage (5 trays total) can be rotated 90° or removed for additional airflow or to accommodate long graphic cards up to 430mm in length
  • Three-speed fan controller is strategically integrated in the front panel and supports up to 3 fans
  • Two Silent Series R2 fans included, featuring hydraulic bearings contributing to a longer life expectancy – Silent Series R2 retail fans will now come standard in all cases
  • Wider case body that allows for improved cable routing behind the motherboard – now 26mm wide
  • New tool-less front fan holder makes switching front fans a breeze
  • Two SSDs can be mounted on the back of the motherboard plate

Chromium for Raspberry Pi beta now available

Hexxah has released a beta of Chromium for the Raspberry Pi – go get it now!

CDW---Unboxing-the-Raspberry-Pi-009_[1]

This is what was posted on the Hexxah blog:

I’m happy to announce that Chromium binaries are now available for you to download and try out. These will ONLY work on Raspbian images, if you’re running Squeeze or anything that isn’t hardfp, don’t even think about it.

Whilst it’s not required, using the 224MB memory split, overclocking your Pi and using a fast USB stick or SD card for your root filesystem will improve your browsing experience. I’ve had the RaspberryPi.org blog frontpage load in as little as 5 seconds by combining all three of these. With that said, let’s get started.

If you’re closer to Europe than the US, type this into a shell: bash <(curl -sL http://goo.gl/5vuJI)
If you’re closer to the US than Europe, type this into a shell: bash <(curl -sL http://goo.gl/go5yx)

Let that command run for a while. It’ll download about 35MB and probably take a while to do it’s thing. Once it’s finished, you can launch Chromium by typing:

chrome –disable-ipv6

Make sure you specify the –disable-ipv6 flag, else your pages will take longer to load than they should (yes, this is probably a bug). This is somewhat of an experiment as the post title suggests, and your input in improving the experience is welcomed. Currently, builds are manual, but if they prove popular and useful, I’ll automate them and produce nightly builds.

TomTom helping drivers to avoid London travel disruptions during the Olympics

0

Sat Nav firm TomTom is extending the functionality of its Map Share service to help drivers in and around London to avoid travel disruptions over the next few weeks.

tomtom

The company has created a map task force to process map changes related to temporary road closures, changes in traffic flow and additional turn restrictions as they happen across the capital.

TomTom will make these dynamic map changes available to its customers via Map Share on a daily basis, free of charge.

TomTom has worked closely with key stakeholders to capture and share the road changes.  Their map experts predict that July 28th is likely to be the most disrupted travel day, when more than 9000 road changes in London will be introduced between Westminster and Guildford*.

The next most congested day is likely to be August 1st when more than 3000 changes will be made.

Other severely disrupted days with a large number of road closures will include the 5th and 12th of August.

The sat nav company has a team of more than 20 people working on preparing and testing the additional daily map changes.  They will continuously process all road changes in and around London throughout the sporting season.

After 6pm every single day, sat nav users will be able to download the following day’s road changes to their navigation device and reset any changes no longer required from the previous day.

“We released our latest map update in May which included structural road changes in London and surrounding areas and points of interest relevant to the summer,” says Tom Brown, TomTom’s  UK Country Manager.  “Now we are going one step further.  We want to ensure that our customers drive with the most up to date map available, taking into account the dynamic road changes resulting from upcoming events in the capital.  Our aim is to do all we can to give London drivers the best navigation experience possible.”

I think this is a really good idea for anyone who is likely to be driving in or around London during the Olympics!

home_server_show_small_thumb_thumb

Here’s what Dave has to say about this weeks show:

It’s another Windows Home Server post-mortem but there are no tears; only celebration. Well, maybe not that happy but we are looking more in depth at Windows Server 2012 Essentials. The more it’s torn apart the more comfortable it gets. We talk about domains, workgroups, Storage Spaces, RAID, SSD, and TechNet. The one question we have however, is this a product for the home or not? Listen in and find out.
