Dying Light: Nightmare Row prequel novel out soon

0

Today Techland has announced that Dying Light: Nightmare Row, a prequel novel set to tie-in with the studio’s upcoming parkour zombie game.

The novel will apparently explore the city of Harran before the outbreak hits, and is written by Raymond Bendon, the man responsible for writing the official follow-up James Bond novels commissioned by the Ian Fleming Estate.

dying-light-book-cover

“Writing the origin story for DYING LIGHT was an exciting adventure for me,” says Benson. “I’d always wanted to try my hand at a zombie-genre tale and this gave me the perfect opportunity. The folks at Techland created a rich and intriguingly bleak setting for the game, so that gave me a wonderful and creepy world in which to play around.  All fans of zombie fiction, gamers and readers alike, are in for a real treat.”

Dying Light: Nightmare Row tells the terrifying story of Mel Wyatt, an 18-year-old American athlete who participated in the Harran 2015 Global Athletic Games two weeks earlier. As one of many Americans stranded in Harran as a result of the outbreak, Mel has been surviving with her little brother, Paul, in an isolated hotel – their parents were killed on the first day of the Infected attacks on the stadium. Thus begins a tense and ticking time bomb thriller of survival.

Dying Light is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the PC, on the 27th January in the Americas, 28th January in Asia, Australia and New Zealand, and 30th January in Europe.

Bang Man! is now out for iOS

Bang Man! the insanely difficult, minimalist platform game which has been keeping Android users entertained since release just before Christmas is now available in the App Store, for free and the Android version is out aswell

capture4

The game sees players attempt to defend Earth from an infinite wave of alien scumbags, high above the planet. Players must use ammo dropped from above to destroy each alien – but every time they fire their gun, they will recoil by the number shown on the box they collected. Avoid aliens whilst without falling off the platform – one wrong move and it’s instant game over.

Once the mechanic clicks, Bang Man! proves deliciously compulsive – the instant restart offering some compensation for the (many) times players will die. The key to success is speed – aliens will speed up if not despatched quickly, so players must act immediately or face an even more difficult challenge as they compete to top the global leaderboard of ‘Best Bangers’.

capture2

Pocket Gamer described the Android release as a “ludicrously tough, super fast platform blaster” and that “it all gels together brilliantly to create a stripped back, intensely clever shooter that’s far, far more than the sum of its parts.” It awarded the game an 8/10 score, bestowing it a Silver Award.

“I’ve been really enjoying the battles taking place at the top of the global leaderboard and I’m absolutely thrilled that iOS owners can now join in,” says Simon Byron, developer of Bang Man! “It’s tough, and certainly not for everyone – but those that it clicks will often begin playing for a few minutes, only to lose hours.”

Bang Man! has been designed and developed by Simon Byron, with graphics by Chris O’Toole and music by Mat Stevens. It is free to download and play, with one in-app purchase disabling the adverts.

The seat part is actually folded together.

The base is heavy and sturdy, so place it on the floor or another stable surface.

Fit the lever mechanism to the base of the chair.

Then fit the arms to the side – this can be a little fiddly so be patient.

After you have then slotted the chair into the base just add the final piece which is the headrest and they you are pretty much ready to go!

A Closer Look

On the side of the chair is a control panel that has the power connector, a headphone socket, an input for connecting either a games console, a tv, dvd, blu-ray player or other receiver, or a handheld device such as an iPod, iPad or mp3 player. There is also a Multi Player connector for connecting up to a second Xenta gaming chair. There is also the on/off power button and both volume and bass buttons.

Final Thoughts

If you are a serious gamer then you want a serious gaming chair, and the Xenta Pedastal Gaming Chair is just that! It looks like a luxury leather business chair and is rather comfortable for sitting back in for extending gaming sessions. The arm rests are in a good position too!

As we mentioned, the chair comes very well packed and everything you need to put the chair together is included in the box. It took us about 30 minutes to put it all together properly as fitting the arms proved a little fiddly. Once put together though the chair is very stable. You can adjust the chair as needed to you particular requirements – I personally found that I didn’t really need the headrest so I just took it back off – it was only held on with velcro so it wasn’t a big deal to do it.

Connecting the power to the chair was easy – just make sure you give yourself enough room as you don’t want to start swivelling in the chair and pull out the power in the middle of a hectic battle!

Connecting up a console, or other device was also very simple with it just being a case of connecting up the right cables to the input on the chair, and in the case of the PS3 making a settings change, but don’t worry the documentation tells you everything you need to know about the settings change and also about connecting up various devices.

Once all that was done and the game was running I found the sound to be very good – the speakers are either side of the top of the chair so you get a good listening experience. You can easily adjust both the volume and the bass by reaching down with your hand (you don’t even have to get out of the seat if you don’t want to). It also works well with headphones for those late night gaming sessions were you need to keep the noise levels to a minimum.

There is also the option to connect to another chair for multi player fun, however as we only had one chair we couldn’t test that out.

All in all we really liked the chair, it was easy to put together, was comfortable and produced a good sound.

The Xenta Pedastal Gaming Chair is available for for £149.99 from Ebuyer.

Review: Vax Air Cordless

One gadget we all need around the house is a vacuum cleaner, and Vax recently introduced their new Air Cordless – and here is our review.

The Air Cordless gives you the freedom to vacuum without limits, obstacles or boundaries.

Cleaning the Air Cordless

There are two elements that can be easily removed and cleaned on the Air Cordless.

The first is the filter in the dirt container. You just lift off the dirt container and twist off the top to gain access to the filter. You can then remove it and wash it under some water and then re-fit it.

CDW Review - Vax Air Cordless - 10

You can also easily remove the brushbar and clean it. Certainly I had to do that a couple of times when things got wrapped around it, but it was a very simple and quick process.

CDW Review - Vax Air Cordless - 15

Final Thoughts

Now I will be honest, I am not a fan of cleaning and hoovering, but then how many of us actually are? One thing I really find a pain is having to keep finding plug sockets to plug in the cleaner, then lifting up cables and then doing that strange dance around the room trying to not go over the cables and then having to find another power socket and doing it all over again. So when I heard that the Air Cordless was well cordless I wanted to see how much of a difference it would make to me, and believe me it made a huge difference.

The battery lasts for about 50 minutes of use, so for most people that will be enough to clean everything. One really good thing is that Vax included a second battery so that can be left charging whilst you are using the Air Cordless and if you do run out of battery power you just swap over the batteries and carry on. The downside is that you have no excuse for stopping as you will always have power!

Cleaning the Air Cordless was a breeze, and described earlier, and emptying out the container just involved the press of a button.

Using the Air Cordless was also very simple indeed – it moves fairly effortlessly across both carpet and flooring (you can select to switch the brushbar on or off depending on the surface you are cleaning). It also works fantastically on corners and on stairs. The extension tube is very easy to use and has quite a reach to it!

The Vax Air Cordless is available now for £299.99 and frankly it’s worth every penny, unfortunately I have no excuse anymore not to do the cleaner – so thanks Vax!

Review: Singstar: Ultimate Party

Singstar, the franchise which has brought both equal love and disdain to fans not only of homebrew karaoke, but the more OCD oriented PS3 users who dislike the unnecessary clutter of their XMB. Either way, after spanning the previous two generations of Sony consoles, Singstar finally makes its debut onto the PS4, but can it still retain its party mantra, or will it shuffle awkwardly in the corner?

299143_scr2_a
If it weren’t for the scores, you wouldn’t be able to tell who the better singer was due to the frustratingly quiet mics

Even hardcore gamers need to let their hair down at some point, and what better way to do so, than by popping on some classic tracks and waking the neighbours with your caterwauling? Back on the PS2? No problem, just slip a disc in and let the sing-along commence. PS3 users can instead choose from their amassed library, built up through the years. PS4 party goers on the other hand aren’t in for the greatest surprise, as due to some ‘licensing issues’ you’ll not be able to import the majority of your previously purchased songs online. To further add insult to injury, there is of course no way to simply pop your old discs in and import them from there either.

The ‘Ultimate Party’ track list, which can easily be found nestling amongst the ‘overly happy go lucky trendy people’ pictures, consists of 30 tracks from your (probably not so) favourite artists. If you’re below the age of twenty, you’ll likely find the song selection to your tastes; already singing along to your favourites on the car journey home. But if you’re of the age that doesn’t have to ask who Lionel Richie is, then once more, you could well be in for a little disappointment. Anyone initially excited via the inclusion of the increasingly popular ‘Let it Go’ will also be a little disheartened to learn that it is in fact Demi Levato’s cover version. A fact I know for certain will upset a friend in possession of an unerringly strong East Midlands accent.

Nevertheless, if you can live with procuring a selection of your favourite songs, for £1.15 a chuck, there is a free version of the game on the store that, for obvious reasons, won’t come with any included tracks. You’ll be able to re-download some of your collection onto the PS4, their availability permitting of course and only up to ten at a time meaning those of you that have hundreds of purchased songs could be in for a wait. Considering the promotion of playing with an inordinately large group of zany friends, the removal of some of the series’ better game modes is a rather peculiar choice. Gone are Duets, Medleys, Pass the Mic and for some reason even the difficulty settings, leaving a barren, if not well presented selection of options to sorrowfully sift through.

singstar
Look at this cringe worthy snapshot of fun…

Of some saving grace however, are the microphone compatibilities. Not only can you still use your older peripherals that clog up the closets, but now the party can continue on if you get a few surprise guests too. A free app for smartphones (vigorously advertised by the Sony department) and available for both android and iOS, can turn it into a makeshift mic. Whilst it’s not going to replicate the weight and feel of a real microphone, it can be a handy way to ensure the majority of people can participate. A small issue, assumedly dependent upon which model of smartphone you use and your connection strength, is that there can often be a delay in speech recognition. Not a game breaking amount, but enough to be often irritable.

If there’s one thing a good knees up needs, it’s enticing people to get up and make fools of themselves due to their vocal incompetency. For some, this can often mean ‘just the right amount of alcohol’, for others, turning down their microphone volume can also be a winning solution. Fortunately for those of a shy disposition, and unfortunately for everyone else, the mic volume is inordinately quiet. To a point where try as you might, you’ll actually find it difficult to hear yourself never mind your friends.

gaming-singstar-ultimate-party-screenshot-02
Zany fun loving group of best friends not pictured

As ever in the franchise, presentation is lavishly applied to each and every area of the game and can often be its strongest suit. Menus are both slick and accessible along with the general game screen balancing the ratio between being informative whilst also looking good. Inevitably the newer tracks offer a greater visual experience due to some higher qualities, but the oldies still look and feel great too. Sound quality is as good as to be expected with all the tracks coming in at a high clarity too.

Making the move to the PlayStation 4 was certainly going to happen, but it could have been handled better, particularly with peoples previously purchased content. It’s still the classic Singstar experience you’ll know and love, but unfortunately the nifty new additions such as being able to use your smartphone as a mic certainly can’t make up for the bewildering game mode omissions. It’s not quite an ‘Ultimate Party’ either when you have to get everyone to download an app. Especially before asking them to ‘bear with you’ whilst you feebly try to download your meagre selection of music. Simply put, there are more options, more game modes and more importantly, a greater and far wider selection of songs on the older PS3 version. Even if you are new to the franchise, I’d still recommend you stick with the last gens iteration, it’ll be a better party all round.
