Review: Rebel Galaxy

0

Rebel Galaxy seems to have warped in out of nowhere and quickly made a strong impression. Open world sci-fi ship combat with a frontier style starts right from the main menu. Rebel Galaxy is a chance to explore the galaxy in a huge ship and float around blowing up other ships in your quest for loot.

Gameplay revolves around accepting quests from various characters or groups and flying around the galaxy completing them. More often than not the quests involve arriving at a destination and either blowing everything up, stealing things or bribing people to leave you alone. Characters and quests are largely forgettable even early in the game. Soon I was accepting quests without much thought and following markers without much knowledge of what I was doing or who I was doing it for.

Luckily combat and exploration are a joy. The naval combat style means that engagements don’t become the usual endless chase and confusion but rather a strategy of which weapons to activate and when to use shields. There’s nothing quite like meeting another ship side by side and letting the broadsides do their thing. Your broadsides will be your main interaction during combat. They can be fired with a simple press of a button or you can hold fire down and aim a concentrated blast to do considerably more damage. Secondary weapons can be fired by holding down or pressing another button depending on what you have equipped. And finally your turrets will acquire targets automatically unless you control them manually. It’s incredibly satisfying when engaging that you feel you have the force of a full ship at your control. Smaller enemies have the ability to roam in a 3D space as your turrets target them which gives combat a 3 dimensional feel despite the naval combat.

1

The rest of your time will be spent upgrading your ship with new or improved parts and eventually buying new ships. There are a considerable amount of upgrades for you to acquire for your shields, weapons, engines, hull strength and more. Progression is constant and the next upgrade is never far away but the final upgrade is going to take some time to earn.

The galaxy you are set free in to explore is impressively diverse which keeps things interesting. Everything you do in Rebel Galaxy involves going somewhere, having a fight and finding your way to a space station to upgrade systems. Thankfully I never got bored of any one of these tasks. Gameplay is the key to Rebel Galaxy and combat in particular is where it excels. Controlling ships during battles is never a problem, firing the right weapons when you want is easy and generally every control is perfectly designed. It is an absolute joy to manoeuvre and engage in Rebel Galaxy.

2

The cowboys and aliens atmosphere is well crafted from the style of the characters to the pounding rhythms of the dark country soundtrack that beats beneath. Even the main menu is a cinematic engagement between ships. There’s a distinctly Firefly feel to the whole thing and even the characters are often roguish crooks rather than evil villains. An exaggerated and colourful art style complement the themes extremely well. It serves the feel of Rebel Galaxy well and keeps the action feeling high paced and exciting.

It’s a shame to have largely meaningless characters and quests that often don’t need reading but exploration and combat offers huge fun. There is a trading system at work too but it’s a pain to use and not as profitable as making money in other ways. Control of the ship is amazing and the control scheme allows combat to flow. Rebel Galaxy is what it is and isn’t afraid of it. Good open-world combat and plenty of upgrades with a cool soundtrack. Rebel Galaxy is well worth a visit.

Mosasaurus from Jurassic World is unleashed in London

Anyone passing London’s South Bank was in for a prehistoric shock this morning when a life-sized mosasaurus apparently burst from the River Thames.

In a literally ground-breaking stunt to mark the release of Jurassic World on Blu-ray and DVD, a seven metre high structure was unveiled at Observation Point at sunrise, apparently bursting through the bank near the Oxo Tower and gobbling a great white shark for breakfast.

The life-sized mosasaurus from Jurassic World was today unveiled on London’s South Bank in a literally ground-breaking stunt to mark today’s Blu-ray and DVD release of the monster hit film. Featuring Jurassic World Producer Frank Marshall

The installation is based on a mosasaurus, one of the hero creatures from Jurassic World, which shattered box office records globally taking in more than $1.6 billion to become the third highest grossing film in history.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruWYu7_k5xU&feature=youtu.be

Jurassic World’s producer Frank Marshall attended the unveiling of the installation: “It’s incredible to see the mosasaurus come to life here in London. This huge water-leviathan played a crucial part in the film so we’re thrilled to be able to unveil it to the British public today. It is the biggest creature brought to life on screen in all the Jurassic films and the detail in which it has been created here today is just jaw-dropping.”

The mosasaurus was an immense seagoing lizard measuring 18 metres in length, and weighing 5,000 kilograms when it ruled the Cretaceous sea.  It used its fearsome array of teeth to catch fish, birds and other marine reptiles – even great white sharks.  Its closest living relatives are the komodo dragon and monitor lizard.

The sculpture, which has been two months in the making, was created in Cardiff by Wild Creations, who were also behind the velociraptors that appeared at Waterloo Station in June. With the whole structure standing at seven metres tall, five metres wide and seven metres deep, this is perhaps their most ambitious installation yet.

Matt Wild, owner of Wild Creations, said: “We’re honoured to unveil the mosasaurus in London today and couldn’t be happier with how it’s come out.

“The raptors had such an incredible response back in June and when we got the call to go bigger for the Blu-ray and DVD release we were more than happy to rise to the challenge.  The mosasaurus was first sculpted in three quarters of a tonne of clay then moulded in fibre glass, before being airbrushed to finish.  We installed it overnight in order to unveil it this morning at sunrise.”

Shattering records globally, Jurassic World crushed the opening-weekend box-office, scoring the highest domestic, international and worldwide openings of all time.  The film has taken in more than $1.6 billion globally to become the third-highest grossing film in history.  Now fans can experience the thrill and awe when Jurassic World arrives on Digital HD, 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD from 19th October.

Ken Cosgrove (Aaron Staton – Ray DonovanAugust Rush) has taken over his father-in-law’s position at Dow Chemical, subsequently turning the tables on Roger (John Slattery –Ant-ManThe Adjustment Bureau) and Pete (Vincent Kartheiser – In Time, Alpha Dog), much to their surprise. Sally (Kiernan Shipka – The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) is at college and slowly becoming disillusioned with her parents, but after receiving distressing news from two people very close to her, she decides to follow another path…

With 15 Primetime Emmy Awards, four Golden Globes, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two BAFTAs to the series’ name, and having been cited as one of the top ten television shows of all time by the Writers Guild of America, there’s no doubt as to the legacy Mad Men leaves behind. Final Thoughts

As someone who grew up playing on the ZX Spectrum in the early 80’s, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the Recreated ZX Spectrum. It looks and feels exactly like the Spectrum I had over 30 years ago, even down to the rubber keys!

Setting up the Spectrum was easy – you just pop some batteries in, pair to the device you want to use and that’s it. The battery lasts for a considerable amount of time and there is also a USB cable provided too!

I did want to use it as a Bluetooth keyboard, so I had to go through the whole process of unlocking it – I’m still not 100% sure why it couldn’t have come unlocked, although the instructions to unlock it are very clear.

The games are exactly as I remembered them, although without the very long loading times and the fear that right at the end of the loading sequence something would go wrong because the tape may have been a little chewed. I still laugh today when I hear people complaining about loading times on the latest AAA console game. Believe me, they have never had it so good!

All in all the Recreated ZX Spectrum is a great piece of kit, you can play all your favourite Spectrum games on it, and even use it as a keyboard.

Elite also plan on improving and adding to the Spectrum features with software and firmware updates which will be as simple as visiting a website to install.

My only negative point is the cost, at £99.95 it’s rather expensive for a Bluetooth keyboard and if you want to play all the games you either have to pay for them separately in the app or have a constant Internet connection to play them for free. If that doesn’t bother you then the Recreated ZX Spectrum is a great additional to your collection.

You can learn more and order the Recreated ZX Spectrum from the Elite website.

Review: Seagate Game Drive for Xbox

if you want to expand the storage of your Xbox One or Xbox 360, you might want to read our review of the Seagate Game Drive for Xbox.

CDW Review - Seagate Game Drive for Xbox - 10

With today’s game installs averaging 35-50GB, space on the console to support a robust library of Xbox games becomes highly valued. With the Seagate Game Drive for Xbox, you will no longer need to delete games to make more room on the console’s library. The Seagate Game Drive for Xbox is a USB 3.0 connected drive with a green top-case and black body, embossed with both the Xbox and Seagate logos. The compact and portable Game Drive for Xbox enables the capability to take your catalogue of downloaded games and achievements for continued game play on any Xbox One or Xbox 360 console.

Final Thoughts

The drive itself is green, Xbox green to be precise and has the Xbox logo stamped on the top of the box. So unlike the WD My Passport X for Xbox One which we reviewed a few months ago, this one is a completely official and branded drive (not that it really makes a difference to the drive, we are just saying).

As with any external drive you want to use with your Xbox One, you just plug it in and the Xbox immediately recognises it and asks if you want it formatted and named. A few moments later the drive is ready to use – it really is that simple and quick.

Moving games from your internal Xbox drive to the Game Drive is simple, with the Xbox taking care of everything for you.

You can also connect it up to your Xbox 360 as well, although the performance is not quite as fast as the Xbox 360 uses USB 2.0 compared to USB 3.0 on the Xbox One.

I found the drive performed really well and seemed very quick to use, along with being pretty much silent.

The drive itself is a rebranded Seagate drive so if you were not bothered about the outer plastic being green and having the Xbox logo stamped on it then you could get the same drive a little bit cheaper, but I think it looks pretty cool sitting there next to my Xbox, so I’m happy!

If you want to expand your Xbox One (or Xbox 360) storage, and let’s be honest, you will want to, and more importantly need it, then the Seagate Game Drive for Xbox is a great addition – you won’t be disappointed.

The Seagate Game Drive for Xbox retails at £95.99, and you can learn more from the Seagate website.
