Review: AC Odyssey ‘Legacy of the First Blade’ Episode 3

The third and final episode of the first story expansion for Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey has released and following the controversial ending to Episode 2 which saw whomever you choose to play as, either Alexios or Kassandra, having a baby with the child of Darius, wielder of the first hidden blade and master Assassin. For me, this felt like a very natural story moment based on how I played the first two episodes however it was not the case for many others who felt that play choice such as the decision to have same sex encounters in the main campaign story, felt this development was forced upon them. A patch did address this making it more of a function of continuing the bloodline rather than anything romantic and that change also flows into the final episode with different dialogue options. I was very interested to see where this aspect as well as Darius’s feud with the Order came to a conclusion.

This is by far the shortest of the three episodes and it really serves more for a narrative conclusion then anything really gameplay wise. It opens by bringing you back to your ‘family’ with dialogue choices to either support the choice to willingly have a child romantically or as a matter of simple continuation of the Alexios/Kassandra bloodline. So, for the dialogue choices, you can either be stand offish and cold or fully in romance mode which for my Alexios just felt very natural to be kind and gentle with Neema about their child, I mean she is very understanding to allow Alexios to simply go off doing his Misthios thing. The opening for me was a lovely reminder of the family life Alexios always wanted and relished to have with his baby son, the woman he loves and Darius there to remind us of the dangers The Order still threaten on the world.

For my Alexios, life is pretty good and he is happy which is very unusual for an Assassin’s Creed hero to actually have that balance, the last Assassin to have it was Ezio Auditore Da Firenze, who at the end of Revelations, puts down his hidden blade and Assassin life in order to have a life and family of his own. So, to have this final episode open with what is pretty much a happy start with all things looking very lovely for Alexios is quite nice. But this is of course Assassin’s Creed, and nice usually doesn’t stay so for long. In one of the most emotive scenes as a fan of the series, following a personal moment with my Alexios and Darius as they look to a possible happy future for their family, they see that their village is in flames, fearing what has happened to Neemas and the baby, Alexios races through the village to find them. We discover that the Order of Dominion is responsible, targeting Alexios for his actions against them and the price paid is a high one, as the baby is stolen and depending on if you play as Alexios/Kassandra, will mean the death of Darius’s last child in the fighting.

What follows is pretty much the bare essentials of this expansion story, with Alexios/Kassandra and Darius now hunting down the remaining members of the Order of Dominion for revenge but mainly to retrieve and rescue the baby. Darius and Alexios/Kassandra are now at odds, with the player feeling the guilt of failing to protect Darius’s child and in losing the baby. Now depending on whether or not you chose to be more romantic about the relationship or stand offish, you will still be called upon to seek vengeance upon the Order. This does bring the expansion story full circle as we learned in the last episode that the Order is being headed by Amorges, former ally and best friend to Darius, who turned against him following Darius assassinating Xerxes the first. Amorges has been in the background all through the expansion, with his forces still hunting down Darius many years after the death of Xerxes, bringing them in contact with the Eagle Bearer who in the main campaign, destroyed the Cult of Kosmos. But now it is perhaps the most personal of reasons to try and tear down Amorges.

The action is fine but again, its very routine for this episode as again the player must complete a few story missions whilst looking for clues to unveil the remaining members of the Order of Dominion as Alexios/Kassandra kill their way to get to Amorges. I did like the animosity between Darius and The Eagle Bearer with both blaming the other whilst clearly suffering the guilt of their own actions being responsible for the less and stealing of the baby. But the problem is that at this point, hunting down Cultists is rather old hat and offers nothing really new. Even the attempt to add in some naval combat falls a little flat as its just so short which is perhaps why for me at least, this final episode is very much focused on the story itself, which acts as bookends to the action with the opening setting up the final battle whilst the ending, which I will not spoil, serves to connect Odyssey to Origins in a clever and surprising way with a nice pay off in a post story mission for players.

All I all Legacy of the First Blade is very much a good example of how DLC can work for the Assassin’s Creed series going forward with story expansions told in an episodic way which actually suits the new RPG Action adventure style of the series now. I do feel that this was a test of various systems to craft how story expansions will be delivered and I am looking forward to the next expansion in ‘Fate of Atlantis’ a very interesting part of the main campaign that should be fun to revisit and see more of. The episodes could do with having more content that reflects the main story even though the main campaign does have multiple endings, the fact that in here how the campaign ended for me based on my decisions felt unimportant and ignored with the fact that my Alexios now has a child and yet no attempts to find my family and share that joy just made it feel a little flat at times.

As the first story expansion this does a lot of world building, by introducing the very first user of the Hidden Blade it adds more lore to the game, and I really enjoyed seeing how The Order is very much alive and well and can easily establish how it will eventually become The Templar Order fans will know from the series. There are nice little teases to the Assassin’s just how Origins did and with perhaps the biggest plot hole of the main campaign looking to be addressed and expanded on in the next expansion DLC, AC Odyssey is doing a fine job holding its own during a year that will not have a new full Assassin’s Creed title released.

I am certainly looking forward to seeing what adventures my Alexios is to have next, in the meantime, I think a cheeky New Game Plus run with Kassandra is next for me with this game until the next expansion launches.

A Closer Look

Final Thoughts

The main selling point of this new bag is that it is both a laptop bag and a backup rolled into one. I know that you could argue that other laptop bags could always have stored your non laptop related stuff in the bag, but this bag goes that one step further and actually gives you pockets and other things to make that easier.

Tucked inside the back of the bag is a hook that can easily be moved into position so that you can hang your bag from a locker rail. You can then open up the bag fully so that you can access the contents, which makes life a lot easier. You can store your clothes, laptop, phone, chargers, wash kit, a lots of other things too.

There’s even a special shoe compartment so that you can keep your shoes separate from the rest of your stuff.

Each of the compartments have a little logo on them so you can easily tell what they are for. For example, the shoe compartment has a little shoe (kind of obvious) and one for your wash kit (as you can see in the pictures above). There’s even a dirty laundry bag included – how useful is that!!! Nice one Targus!

The laptop part of the back is specially lined to add an additional layer of protection for your laptop, not only from the outside world but from whatever you might be carrying in the bag.

The bag is very comfortable to wear for extended periods of time too, and can easily be adjusted to give you the maximum amount of comfort.

The Work + Play Fitness 15.6″ Laptop Backpack from Targus is available now priced around £64.99 and comes in either Black/Yellow or Grey.

If you are looking for a really good quality backpack that can carry more than just your laptop, then you really should take a closer look at the Work + Play Fitness 15.6″ Laptop Backpack from Targus because I think you might have just found exactly what you are looking for.

Review: Captain MARVEL

The final piece in the master tapestry that is the current MCU has at last been unveiled as Captain MARVEL releases today internationally in cinemas. It is also quite hard to fathom how in ten years of the MCU, that it took 20 films before a female hero focused film was released, but who better than Carol Danvers to lead into a new era. I have been both intrigued but also concerned by the sheer number of trailers for the film, intrigued by the story they were hinting at but also at just how much of the big action scenes had been shown in the trailers, but it was time to how the final piece of the puzzle slots into place leading into Avengers: End Game.

I will start by saying there is a wonderful tribute to the late Stan Lee at the start of the film which is very touching and heartfelt and a moment where myself and many others in the screen took a moment to think about Stan, it is very strange to know that for at least this and Avengers: End Game will have Stan Lee Cameos, and they have even more meaning and presence now that he has passed, and this was a lovely way to pay their respects to him. Tasteful and delicately done which alongside one of his final MCU cameo’s, will keep Stan in the hearts and minds of fans as they watch.

Captain MARVEL has a lot on its shoulders just ahead of End Game’s release next month following how Infinity War ended with Nick Fury’s final act of using an old tech Pager to seemingly message an unknown hero for help with the Captain MARVEL logo appearing on screen just as Fury turns to dust following the Snap. So even before the film begins, there is huge pressure to introduce and set up this hero who Fury considers is the Earths’ last resort once Thanos had won but also never felt was required as aliens came through wormholes in New York and a rogue AI being dropped an entire city from the sky.

So, with the bar set pretty high already, it was finally time to meet Carol Danvers, which took a good hour or so into the film before you do so as we first meet Vers, member of Starforce, a Kree Special forces unit, waking up before going to train with her mentor and team leader Yon-Rogg. Vers is sassy, quick to use sarcasm but headstrong and determined as seen in her combat training with Yon-Rogg. It is also clear that Vers has powers beyond the Kree strength and fighting skills which Yon-Rogg is making very clear that she must focus harder to control but to also work on her own skills and to not rely on this power. We are also introduced to the supreme leader of the Kree Nation, The Great Intelligence, and during a session where Vers is having a talk in Virtual Reality with The Great intelligence, we can see that Vers is troubled by strange memories she does not understand, when again she is told about the potential of her power but to focus on controlling her emotions.

Her team is then sent on a dangerous mission to recover a Kree agent before their deadliest enemy, the Skrull can intervene. The Kree and Skrull have been at war for centuries, with the Skrull having the natural ability to shape shift into any person they see. But the mission is a trap, and the Skrull are able to capture Vers and submit her to mind probes by a Skrull commander named Talos which causes her to begin to remember more of the strange memories as Talos pushes towards a particular memory they need information from. Managing to escape, she crash-lands here on Earth, through the roof of a BlockBusters video store in the 1990s which is when the film really takes off.

One of the things I took away from Captain MARVEL is just how much of it is a celebration of everything that has come before in the MCU as being set in the 90s means it is a story that happens before Tony Stark builds the Iron Man suit and Fury begins the Avengers Initiative. In as much as this is an origin story for Captain MARVEL herself, it is also at the same time an origin story almost for a very young Nicholas Joseph Fury, Agent of SHIELD who is first to respond to the report of something strange break in at the BlockBuster store. After 20 films, it is really nice to see Samuel Jackson finally given the chance to have far more screen time and dialogue on screen, and the effects used to de age him for this role works really well, not so much for Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, who in the 90s is a new agent with SHIELD and partnered with Fury. I also liked how they did not try to overdo the nostalgia of being back in the 90s, instead using clever and genuinely funny moments to highlight the difference of back then and today which older members of the audience will get right away. The soundtrack is very much of the 90s and the film will quite often take every opportunity to drop a 90s tune in, not at the same level that Guardians of the Galaxy cleverly used its own soundtrack but it still has a nice touch to the setting.

I also really liked Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, the interactions with Nick Fury came across really warm and funny in the film, even before Carol regains her memories. She brings a warmth and human side to what essentially is the most powerful character in the MCU next to Thanos which is also where the film fell down a little for me. I got the feeling that this was about showing how powerful Captain MARVEL can be and in doing so, the pace at which Carol Danvers is introduced finally, is sadly short lived. But it is thanks to the brilliant performance of Lashana Lynch as Maria, Carol’s best friend and former Air Force test pilot who is as strong and skilled as Carol and helps Carol remember her life before the events that led to her gaining her powers. Next stand out performance has to go to Ben Mendelsohn as Talos who goes all out bringing him to life and has some of the best moments in the film which was a nice surprise for his character and the Skrulls, which could be intriguing as the next phase of the MCU carries on after End Game.

The demonstration of Captain MARVEL’s powers in the final act was spoiled sadly as it was used in so many of the trailers before release but you do get the sense of the real power that she has, which as I said earlier, really feels like the reason behind the timing of this film coming out just before Avengers: End Game. This certainly sets up enough for the audience to know what impact having Captain MARVEL in End Game could have, and definitely what a MCU will look like after End Game and with the twenty years or more game between this film and current MCU timeline, there is still room to continue the story of Carol Danvers in one or two films at least to continue to build on her story depending on how she is used in End Game, which one of the two post credit scenes gives a nice little tease to.

Captain MARVEL is a very fun film to watch, it is celebratory of the current MCU which gives fans a look at a very different Nick Fury and a world before the time of Avengers and evil villains. Even getting to see Ronan the Accuser before the events in Guardians of the Galaxy was a great way to bring back this underused character and hopefully a chance for him to return in Captain MARVEL sequels. It is all very routine MARVEL though, there is nothing ground-breaking or overly memorable but it does get the balance of origin story, action and comedy right, with special mention going to Goose the cat for being well….Goose the cat. This is a MCU film that definitely knows that it has done enough to introduce Captain MARVEL as a character at a time when the MCU is about to change completely however End Game ends but it has so much more story to tell in sequels, wich is no doubt the actual plan for her going forward.

This is a great popcorn film and for me, after the darkness of Infinity War and the uncertain End Game, this is a much needed bit of fun with good action, sensible comedy and a chance to connect some dots from the early years and loose threads from other MCU films but opening up more cosmic stories now that there is a chance to learn more about the Kree and the introduction of the Skrulls. Could they have done more, yes they could have but again, with End Game looming and the merger of Fox bringing the X-Men, Deadpool and Fantastic Four licenses back under MARVEL’s control through Disney, the next phase of the MCU is going to be huge and with Captain MARVEL now established as a potential main character for the next phase, this was the sensible way to go.

Go see it and enjoy it for what it is, it is a great first look at the future of the MCU!

Captain Marvel features select scenes specially formatted for IMAX theatres with an expanded aspect ratio, which means audiences get to see up to 26% more picture than standard theatres, only in IMAX.

Mixcder announces the new Mixcder E9 ANC headphones

Mixcder has announced the launch of the latest headphone in the range, the E9. The next generation headphones feature the latest advancement in ANC technology to deliver superior noise-cancelling performance and audio quality. The foldable headphones have the premium, soft foam pads expected of Mixcder but now with upgraded technological advancement and improved sound. The Mixcder E9 headphones are available now for £59.99/$69.99 from Amazon UK and Amazon.com.

With the launch of the E9, Mixcder has increased the length of time music can be enjoyed thanks to its 30-hour battery promise without using ANC and 24 hours with. Hybrid ANC technology uses an active noise cancellation system that works in a wider frequency range in the low to midrange frequencies than most ANC designs and provides an improved degree of noise cancellation. The ANC continues to work when using the included audio cable and can play for around 40 hours. If ANC is switched off, the headphones require no battery and can be used continuously.

The E9 also delivers improved isolation for better noise cancellation outside the active range. When an incoming noise is detected by the headphones, a digital signal processor (DSP) analyses the sound waves and creates inverse waves to cancel out the ambient sound. Simple to activate, users simply switch on the ANC button on the left ear pad to shut out from the world and relax with their music or film without being disrupted by noisy neighbours on a train or plane.

Ideal for frequent flyers, the new aeroplane adaptor function allows the user to immerse themselves in music without the disturbance and noise levels experienced on a plane. Also, for ease of use, the buttons have been made bigger than on the E8 to manage volume, change music and the microphone allows for wireless control and hands-free phone calls.

Lighter than its predecessors, weighing in at just 255g, the E9 has been designed to accompany users wherever they go. The ear cups fold and rotate, making them perfect for travel and commuting as the headphones can be flattened down for easy packing within the included durable carry case. The soft foam and protein leather ensure a comfortable experience whenever users want to drown out the soundtrack of modern life.

The E9 is equipped with 40mm drivers for a powerful, wideband frequency response from 20Hz-20,000Hz with impactful bass, a rich and detailed midrange and clear, extended treble. The CSR Bluetooth and drivers balance sound perfect, especially in low frequency offering a crisp sound at up to 94 decibels. It delivers real clarity of sound, particularly with low frequency and deep bass which is powerful and punchy. E9 listeners are able to immerse themselves in their music or film with no disruption from external noise and enjoy every nuance of their favourite song.

The Mixcder E9 Active Noise Cancelling Wireless Bluetooth Headphones are available for £54.99/$69.99 from Amazon UK, Amazon.com and Mixcder.

Review: Devil May Cry 5

The Devil May Cry series has always had a special place in my gamer’s heart and is a big reason why I have always gravitated towards ‘Hack n Slash’ games throughout the years. The combat has always been superb and Dante was such an amazing main character. When it came to Devil May Cry 4, I actually liked Nero as a character who helped refresh the series for series fans but also attracted a new audience. When Devil May Cry 5 was announced and it was confirmed that director Hideaki Itsuno and his team were getting the band back together it had already sold me, but following the Xbox One demo I was certainly chomping at the bit to jump back into the series.

We return to a world where demons have not been seen for years when suddenly a new invasion begins and we find Nero has now set up his own Demon fighting agency, operating out of a van and assisted by Nico. The surprise is that somehow Nero no longer has his demon right arm and instead is now relying on cybernetic arms which also serves as an aid in battle, all of which are designed and built by Nico herself. Strange demon attacks are happening all over the world and Nero heads to Red Grave City, the centre of all the demonic activity where he discovers the blood-sucking demon tree Qliphoth and find Dante fighting a powerful demon that actually defeats Dante. Vowing to get revenge and to find out what is going on, Nero is set on the path by a mysterious man called V.

The first thing I have to say is that Devil May Cry 5 is one gorgeous visual feast on the eyes, this is one of the best-looking games right now on any console and that is even before the enhancements for the Xbox One X and the PS4 Pro. Every character model has the most insane level of details on them especially on V, who I will speak more about a little further on, but the intricate design of his tattoos is off the charts. Then you throw in the environments with a clear inspiration for Red Grave City taken from London and then all the demonic you face and every single encounter and cut-scene just leaps out of your TV or screen. It is astonishing to see how far this series has come to this point with just the right level of gaming technology to really showcase the Devil May Cry Series as it is in this game.

Once you get over just how stunning the visuals and art style are, the combat itself yet again elevates it to another level as through the story you get to play as three characters, Nero, Dante and the mysterious V. Nero of course has his weapons with the Red Queen sword, his Blue Rose hand cannon but the addition of the Devil Breaker now makes up for the loss of his demonic powers since losing his demon arm. Each Devil Breaker has a unique ability from a standard use with B button to a charged-up move. The variety of the Devil Breakers will really make a difference in the combo chains you can put together, and as they can break from over use or damage from enemies, it is rather handy then that you can find new Devil Breakers around the area you are playing in or to setup your own loadout before starting a new mission by purchasing Devil Breakers from Nico. I fully advise experimenting with how each Devil Breaker works as you practice your combo and fighting style with Nero and also, some of the stranger looking ones can be the most useful.

Dante himself has his own weapons such as his Rebellion Sword and Balrog melee gear as well as his Ebony and Ivory pistols and Coyote Shotgun. Instead of a Devil Breaker, Dante has four fighting styles that the player can switch to using the D-Pad such as Trickster, Royal Guard, Gunslinger and my personal favourite Swordmaster. By selecting one of the styles, they become the move you use with B button, just as you would as Nero to use the Devil Breaker so that the combat system remains intact. Dante also has his demon form which can be triggered once the devil trigger system builds up enough from either defeating enemies or collecting white orbs. This form increases Dante’s damage until the meter us used up.

By far though the most interesting and visually stunning playable character to use is V. This mysterious character has a very unique combat system that completely took me by surprise. V has three demon pets that fight for him, Griffon the talking demon Eagle assigned to X, Shadow the demonic panther assigned to Y and Nightmare, the giant golem like demon who can be summoned once the Demon Trigger has three bars and is assigned to B. Each pet works independently but also at the same time by using their controller buttons so the player is really at times in control of four characters on Screen because the demon pets can only hurt enemies, in order to fully defeat them, V himself must deliver the final blow. This is the hardest character to master as you constantly have to track the pets and who they are fighting with the easiest method is to use V to lock on to a target and which will focus the pets on that target as well. Each pet has a health bar and should they take too much damage they will return to an orb state until they recover, taking them out of the fight. V can help by staying close to them in the fight but as V is generally rather weak as he can pretty much only dodge attacks until he is able to deliver the final blow, puts him in harm’s way.

The level of detail that goes into V is breath-taking with the animation alone of each of these pets who will also aid him outside of combat such as using Griffon to help with jumping and Shadow will become an almost shadowy demonic skateboard for V when he sprints for long enough. The coolest thing however is that the pets are actually the tattoos that are on V’s body, so when they are not in use, they will return to V’s body and when they are called on you can see the tattoos leaving him as the pet becomes real with V’s hair turning white once Nightmare is Summoned. He is by far the most intriguing character to play as and in the story itself as it unfolds. The attention to detail in the animation from cutscenes to being out of but especially in combat is pure eye candy and you can really see and appreciate how hard the team have worked to bring this game to life. The game engine is so solid that at no time did I experience any slow down even in the most chaotic of battles fighting a multitude of enemies and having all three of V’s demon pets on screen kicking some ass.

The combat system is extremely complex for all three playable heroes with V standing out the most. The amount of focus it takes to really pull of the high-grade stylish fight scores and even as an experienced hack n slash player, this game truly offers the greatest challenge in adapting to a character fight style. The system is so deep as you try to find one that suits you and there is so much information to take in from every battle from the different enemies you face to what style and weapons you use to tackle them. All three playable heroes are so different that learning and trying to master anyone of them is going to take time and this game is so much fun and so bombastic to experience that I want to spend a lot of time trying to be the best with each one with V standing out the most.

As complicated as the fighting system is however, it also allows for inexperienced players to manage it just fine with the option for auto assist given at the very start and rudimentary combo options available so players will never feel completely lost in the combat system but always aware that they are capable of being better. I find this such a refreshing approach to this genre, by allowing you to play the game but know you can try and do better if you can or choose to but can also just enjoy the story and the characters as they, allows a really joyful time with Devil May Cry 5 because the story can have incredibly serious and dark moments but can also be absolutely silly at the same time such as when you are able to use a telephone call box to call in Nico and her van in order to refresh your kit or purchase new skills midway through a mission, and the animation of how Nico manages to get her van to you is just nuts at times but so much fun to see on screen, and I just love Nico as a character. Nico does not just offer Nero new Devil Breaker arms, but through her shop players can spend red orbs to upgrade and purchase new skills for each character and their weapons unlocking new combo moves and character skills. What I liked about this is that the game is very generous in giving you red orbs so buying new skills for each character is easy and as the orbs and items such as Golden orbs which can revive you if you fall in a fight, carry over to each character means you are always able to give new skills to characters throughout the story campaign.

I am having such a good time with Devil May Cry 5 that for fans of the series this is potentially the most iconic chapter yet for the series and one that will offer so much satisfaction from the story to the combat systems to learn. I have deliberately avoided talking about the story because it needs to be played without any spoilers other than how it begins. Switching between the characters keeps you on your toes but I also like that at times, the player can choose who they want to play as for a mission giving this game genuine replay value because even though the overall story remains the same for all three, each one will have a different experience during their portion of the story delivered as you play as them. This is also just so damn metal when the fighting starts and the incredible soundtrack just kicks in and just you fell every second of the battle as a visceral thing till it ends. A nice touch is the ‘Cameo’ system which despite the game being single player only it does connect online and by doing so connects to other players of the game so that with it switched on, you can see the ghost image of another player, playing the same mission as you and you can compete to see who does better and the game will even ask you if you want to rate that other players performance at the end of the mission. This can be turned off but its always interesting to see how their ‘ghost’ performs.

Devil May Cry 5 just embodies everything I love about gaming and the hack n slash genre, it can be so over the top but delivers the story so well featuring every character from the series. It is just so highly polished and serves as a celebration of everything that makes this series so iconic. There is a snappy and quick pace to the action but enough room to develop your own style with even more space to learn to do better every time you jump into the game. Fans of the series will get so much from the tiny extra details put in the story for the characters and new comers to it will see just way this is a series worthy of  being in your collection.

Chester-Le-Street Community Centre Association has been awarded a £1,000 donation from Vodafone UK. The charity collected the Vodafone Community Connection Award last week after the store team in Chester-Le-Street chose the deserving cause.

Launched in 2014, Vodafone’s Community Connection Awards have already made a difference to more than 170 local communities across the UK. Selected by local Vodafone staff and aimed at supporting local causes with a £1,000 donation, the awards have been used to help fund everything from new equipment for soup kitchens and day centres for the elderly to helping people with disabilities take part in sporting activities.

Chester-Le-Street Community Centre Association offers a variety of activities and classes for local residents, including yoga, a bowls club and the charity’s own north east concert band. A section of the centre, based on Newcastle Road, has suffered from consistent flooding. The £1,000 award will help fund a new sump pump to automatically pump out any flooded water to the nearest drain, ensuring the centre is always accessible.

Julie Dryden-Smith, Centre Manager at Chester-Le-Street Community Centre Association said, “We wish to express our gratitude at being awarded the £1,000 Vodafone Community Connection Award. Over the last couple of years, the building has suffered from flooding whenever we’ve experienced bad weather and this money will help us solve that issue. Again, thank you for this amazing award!”

Paula Newton, Vodafone Store Manager in Chester-Le-Street said, “We were thrilled when we had a chance to select Chester-Le-Street Community Centre Association as our award winner. It’s a self-funded charity that caters for a wide range of age groups and we know it makes a difference to our customers here in Chester-Le-Street.”

Review: Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 the year that the notch dies

2019 is set to be the year the notch dies, with the lack of a notch means the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3’s display occupies almost all of the front of the phone. In fact, it has an impressive 94% screen-to-body ratio and all the bezels are as slim as I’ve seen on any phone.
The bottom bezel is slightly thicker than the others but not distracting so.
Indeed, in conjunction with the phone’s glossy ceramic body and muted, yet attractive colours, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is a striking thing to both touch and look at.

The superficially at least, the workings of the sliding mechanism have had little impact on the overall design and function of the phone. The Mi Mix 3 is, perhaps, slightly thicker than your average flagship phone, but not significantly so. It’s quite heavy at 218g, but with a screen this big you’re always going to expect a little heft.

Otherwise, it looks and behaves just like any regular Android smart phone. Volume and power buttons reside on the right-hand edge of the phone, there’s a shortcut “AI” button on the left for launching Google Assistant and on the bottom edge are a pair of speaker grilles and a USB charging port.

The rear plays host to a small, circular fingerprint reader and it’s also worth noting that the phone supports wireless fast charging at 10W, Mi Mix 3 does include a charger in the box.
So far, it’s all good stuff, but there are some potential stumbling blocks. First, there’s no 3.5mm headphone jack, which is fine if you always use Bluetooth but not so much if your favourite headphones are wired. Second, the battery at 3,200mAh in capacity is on the small side for a phone this big.
Finally, although the phone comes with Android 9 Pie out of the box, this is running with Xiaomi’s Mi OS (MIUI) on top.
Specifications
6.39in Super AMOLED, 1,080 x 2,340 (403ppi),
19.5:9 display
Octa-core 2.8GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor
6GB RAM
128 storage (UFS 2.1)
Dual rear cameras: 12MP f/1.8; 12MP f/2.4 (2x telephoto); OIS; slow-motion 1080p video at up to 960fps
Dual front cameras: 24MP; 2MP (depth of field only)
3,200mAh battery; 10W wireless charging (charger included)
Android 9 Pie
Colours: Onyx Black, Sapphire Blue
Price: £499.99 (ebuyer), Xiaomi)
The phone’s camera setup looks good, though. On the rear, the Mi Mix 3 has a pair of 12-megapixel snappers set up for telephoto photography. One of these has an aperture of f/1.8, while the other offers a 2x zoom and has an aperture of f/2.4.

At the front, there’s also a dual camera array, although it works in a slightly different way. The primary camera delivers 24-megapixel images but the secondary 2-megapixel camera is used only for depth of field mapping.

Camera Samples
Pictures were taken in the Beautiful city of Barcelona, at this year MWC 2019

For

  • Tiny amounts of bezel thanks to the slider design
  • Large screen and great AMOLED quality
  • Dual rear cameras produce decent results
  • Solid battery considering the capacity
  • Distinctive design

Against

  • Selfie camera is poor quality
  • Heavy and a little thick design
  • Software not always the fastest going

With battery life on the Mi Mix 3 will last you the average 9 to 5 job for the day, it may not last that much longer With the slider design gets a bit clogged with gunk, the front-facing camera is poor (surprisingly so, considering it’s one of the main features), the MIUI software isn’t quite as eloquent as some established Android rivals, and the lack of an in-screen fingerprint scanner is a disappointment.
