News: Goat Simulator 3

0

I love it when the development team is as crazy as the games they create. Coffee Stain North is the crew behind the highly anticipated Goat Simulator 3. This fun-loving and eclectic group of like-minded individuals has a wicked sense of humour and an unrivalled passion for the gaming industry. I was fortunate enough to get hands-on with the game and harass the team for a considerable amount of time. As such, we discussed a plethora of subjects, laughed, talked, and laughed some more. However, you don’t want to know that. Instead, you want to know about the wonderful goaty game.

Due to be released on November 17th, 2022, this is exclusive to the Epic Store and next Gen titles only. This will be disappointing news for fans of Steam or those on older consoles. However, no longer will the devs be restricted by dated tech, and the heavy investment from Epic has pushed them towards the finish line.

So many goats, so little time.
Which goat will you pick?

What’s new in Goat Simulator 3?

Everyone loved the high-energy madness of the original. However, this time around, the goat is a little slower. Now, this doesn’t reduce the insanity. Instead, it enhances the experience as it’s more manageable. This aside, there are many major changes afoot. The first is a whopping world to explore! You now have a map that is 18 times larger than the first and measures approximately 1.1 million square goatage. I was assured that this was the correct term of measurement, though I’m still a little dubious.

On top of this, there are some incredible custom options. Through crazy goat shenanigans, exploration, and progression, you will unlock skins and earn tokens. This can be spent on more cosmetic gear to make the goat of your dreams. If this doesn’t tickle your fancy, you can now grind rails and wires like Tony Hawks, or steal cars like some goat mobster from Grand Theft Auto. These mechanics were introduced to help traverse the monstrous 1.1 million square goatage map. (Wait a minute, is that even a thing?) This was a phenomenal choice as it retains the goaty charm without relying on jetpacks, teleporters or other unnecessary nonsense*. (* Disclaimer, other unnecessary nonsense is likely to be included.)

Finally, multiplayer goat action!

You screamed, you shouted, and you cried! Thankfully, the devs aren’t monsters, mainly, and they listened. The result? Multiplayer goat action! With the ability to invite three like-minded goat friends to your world, you can complete quests, enter mini-games, and be goat assholes together. There is one caveat, however, and that is no random player may enter your goat paradise. Yes, you read that correctly. Goat Simulator 3 doesn’t allow promiscuous meetings with random goat enthusiasts. Therefore, you’ll have to convince your friends to buy a copy of the game or King of the Hill, The Floor is Lava, and the 5 other mini-games will never be experienced.

Be at peace with the hippies in Goat Simulator 3.
What were they smoking?

Goat Simulator 3 is so crazy that it is a must-have title.

I rarely consider niche games as must-have experiences. Normally, they try too hard and they lose their way. However, Goat Simulator 3 is different. It stamps its personality on every element and you know what you’ll get. At times, it is ruthless, unfair, and infuriating. Yet you’ll still laugh, as it’s undeniably insane, immature, and childish. I adored my limited time with it and can’t wait to cover it fully in the near future. I know that the action and story will be full of surprises, but one thing that is guaranteed is that it’ll be a toy box of fun with minimal restrictions. If this takes your fancy, preorders can be found here; Epic Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Why not prepare to get your goat on by looking up more information here?

Review: Unknown Number

I rarely encounter innovative gaming experiences. With many titles following tried and tested mechanics, there is a distinct lack of originality. Recently, the most eye-opening games have been A Way Out and It Takes Two. These games tested how we worked together and pushed their player base to think outside the box. As such, whenever I find a developer who tries to be innovative, I sit up and take notice. Unknown Number: A First Person Talker does just that with its incredibly unique core mechanics. What’s more, it has an enthralling story and some excellent acting all wrapped up in a simple approach.

Developed and published by Godolphin Games, this is a voice-controlled adventure puzzle title. Furthermore, there are some minor story branches that impact how the game plays out. Alongside this, you’ll experience an uneasy plot that twists and turns and leaves you feeling uncomfortable. Developer Thomas Keane has taken influence from some unusual and experimental titles. With an eclectic blend of themes, he points to Her Story, Kind Words (Lo Fi Chill Beats to Write to), and Before your Eyes as a source of inspiration. However, it is fair to say that his creation stands alone in both its presentation and its core mechanics.

Unknown Number will confuse you with some tricky puzzles.
Do you know Morse code?

Unknown Number grabs your attention immediately.

When a game is pushing the envelope, I worry that it’ll lose its way. Somehow, Unknown Number retains its creepy charm while immediately grabbing your attention. With an almost episodic approach, you tackle the story in bite-sized chunks, and this was phenomenal. With so much going on and plenty of cryptic puzzles to solve, it could have been overbearing. However, the slow-paced delivery, combined with the energetic and dramatic plot, ensures that you are never out of your depth.

You are an innocent bystander who inadvertently becomes embroiled in a dangerous plot to take down an oil giant. An innocuous phone call uncovers a secret plan to steal valuable assets from a company known as Sligoil. However, the party behind the call soon realise that you were not their intended recipient. Yet, desperate for help, they drag you into their seedy affair in order to solve puzzles and open each of the 7 vaults that stand in their way. Without you, Ethan Hammer and Amanda Reid will fail in their mission. Accordingly, you must decide whether to join forces with these eco-warrior criminals or abide by the Met police’s advice and give up your newfound friends. Whatever you decide, the consequences will be deep-seated and the ramifications will rumble on for years.

The board at Sligoil are greedy and sly.
How long until this board turn on you?

Action, puzzles, and a mobile phone.

The story sounds incredibly exciting, but the mechanics are slow, methodical, and deliberate. As such, the narration and the problem-solving wonderfully juxtapose each other. Accordingly, it takes a bit of getting used to, especially when the shit hits the fan. Unknown Number’s key principle revolves around its voice-controlled experience. During every puzzle and most phone calls, you are expected to answer clearly and concisely. Now, this is a fantastic twist on normal puzzle titles. Instead of giving you mountains of time to resolve the issue, you must think fast and deliver a solution to keep the protagonists alive.

You are expected to move guards by hacking into a PA system, crack unusual codes to unlock doors, solve chemical formulas, relay Morse code, and much, much more. Alongside this, you must decipher a range of mind-boggling cryptic clues as a timer ticks down and orders are barked over the phone. Consequently, there is an uncomfortable pressure that pushes you during every chapter. Now, this isn’t a complaint, as it works perfectly with the drama and the flow of the story.

Alongside this, your imagination runs wild as you only hear selected portions of audio. Subsequently, you must fill in the blanks and interpret many segments of the story. This was particularly great, especially when the police phone calls cast shadows over the legitimacy of what you are trying to achieve. Consequently, the plot is a mystery right up until the finale, and this makes it gripping, exciting, and tough to put down.

I loved hacking the PA to open the vaults.
Move the guards and open the vaults.

Grab a notepad and speak clearly.

There are many brilliant elements, but two areas that may frustrate you are note-taking and the lack of an alternative input method. In order to complete Unknown Number, you must have a pen and paper handy. This shouldn’t be a problem, and in fact, I enjoyed the note-taking and problem-solving moments. However, a lack of an in-game journal or notebook was a mistake. It would have been helpful to be able to pin key information on the main screen and it would have saved paper at the same time.

The second issue won’t impact everyone, and I know the game’s USP is its voice-controlled approach. Yet, gamers who have no microphone, or those who have speech impairments, cannot play this amazing title. Therefore, I would like to see an alternative input method incorporated as a backup. If this was included, it would make it a more versatile game that manages to retain its dark and creepy charms.

Unknown Number is incredibly atmospheric.

I was amazed that a simple graphical approach could be so atmospheric. Most of the action focuses on a rudimentary touch screen phone and an animated robotic logo. Alongside this, there is a dated and charming internet search browser that’ll remind you of the 90s. Furthermore, the environment has a futuristic edge thanks to the rich colour palette and cold imagery. During each chapter, you are introduced to different backdrops that help to set the scene. This straightforward visual trigger changes the dynamic of each segment while adding variety throughout.

Though the visuals were great, the audio was better, still. The blend of incredible sound effects, cold and callous automated messages, and brilliant acting sucks you into this dangerous world. Furthermore, you soon empathise with Ethan and Amanda as their passion and drive outweigh their criminal approach. I adored the everyday sound effects and danger associated with every alarm, warning message, and oppressive voicemail.

Follow directions to get to your destination safely.
Use the map to navigate the rig.

Tick, tick, tick goes the timer.

When much of the action focuses on time-critical tasks, you’ll be focused on the ticking timer. Fortunately, this simple element was easy to understand and a cinch to follow. Further to this, the other basic controls worked well and were responsive. As long as you were patient with each cryptic clue, the delivery of a solution was neither difficult nor was it taxing to execute.

Unfortunately, Unknown Number isn’t the longest game I’ve played. But what you experience is enjoyable, touching, and memorable. On top of this, its £11.99 price point is great value when you consider the unique core mechanic. To complete the game and experience everything on offer, you’ll need to invest approximately 4 to 5 hours. As such, there is ample gameplay for the price.

Unknown Number is an innovative title.

Unknown Number immediately grabbed my attention! Its amazing voice-controlled mechanics are so unusual that I admired the developer’s original mindset and bravery. This unique approach must be applauded, and it needs to be tried to be appreciated. However, I shouldn’t overlook the incredible puzzles and awe-inspiring audio that deliver the amazing and touching plot. Accordingly, this is one indie title that sets the bar extremely high. Undoubtedly I fell for its charms and therefore I can easily recommend you to buy it here! Will you be able to solve every problem and help out your new friends? Note down the clues, crack the puzzles, and decide which side you are on.

At this time, venmo search by phone number helps many people to get information about unknown numbers.

News: Peaky Blinders – The King’s Ransom VR

0

I’m of an age that remembers the dawn of VR gaming. Consequently, my mindset has been tarnished by janky and sick-inducing experiences. Even recently, the market hadn’t evolved enough to convince me to change my mind. However, a 15 to 20-minute demo at EGX 2022 of Peaky Blinders – The King’s Ransom VR has opened my eyes.

Developed and published by Maze Theory. This is an interactive and immersive gaming experience. It takes you on a wild adventure through some incredible locations as you delve into the Peaky Blinders world. Fans of the series with cherish the chance to step inside the grim mobster environment. Yet, if you’ve never watched the TV series, it matters not. Why? Well, the developers have created a unique tale that sits somewhere between series 4 and 5. As such, no prior knowledge is required.

What is so good about Peaky Blinders – The King’s Ransom VR?

Powered by an Oculus headset, this game should have been limited in what it could do. Instead, the developers created a masterful world with some fantastic locations to explore. Without spoiling it for you, you’ll be dumbstruck by the levels of detail and the oppressive nature of your surroundings.

On top of this, there’s a chance to interact with some key characters. This was phenomenal, as it added a little spice to the fantastic story. Also, why wouldn’t you want to converse with and impress Tommy Shelby?

Game mechanics.

The story and environment were mighty impressive, but the game mechanics were mind-blowing. The accuracy of your actions and the fluid nature of the combat elements transport you inside the game. Then there are the minor details which add to the quality. Your gloved hands and pistol are both era-specific and look fantastic. Alongside this, there are many time-consuming events to become engrossed in.

This aside, the team wants their player base to explore the seedy and nasty world. Consequently, they’ve hidden collectables and Easter eggs in each scene. What’s more, there are items that can only be accessed after you’ve returned to a specific location. This highlights the desire to enhance longevity and increase the replay value.

Peaky Blinders – The King’s Ransom VR should be on your radar.

Though I’ve alluded to some key areas, there is much, much more to see and do in this game. Subsequently, Peaky Blinders – The King’s Ransom VR is one title that should be on your radar. Yes, fans of the series will relate to the action more than others, but this doesn’t detract from its brilliance. I, for one, can’t wait to see how it evolves in the coming months. Final Thoughts

Setting up the Pad 8 was simple, switch it on, follow the usual steps of picking your country and wi-fi network and then just wait. The whole process took less than 5 minutes. Once the installation has finished there is an optional configuration you can go through, or if you are familiar with Android you can just go ahead and set the Pad 8 just how you would like it.

A quick check also revealed a new Magic UI update, which completed very quickly. The Magic UI is based on Android 12 so any existing Android user will be very familiar with the UI.

The Pad 8 is quite thin and the screen is larger, however the quality isn’t the best we’ve ever seen.

The front and rear cameras work well, but again they are not the highest quality on the market – both front and rear are 5MP cameras), but again, you get what you pay for and they work well enough.

Battery life is good – we managed to get around 10 or so hours of use out of it, more if we turned down the brightness, but for most people 10 hours is probably more than enough.

There is no 3.5mm headphone socket on the Pad 8, if you want to use headphones then they have to be Bluetooth. Setting up Bluetooth headphones was easy enough though.

The sound is really good on the Pad 8 – there are 8 speakers that work very well.

Overall the Pad 8 feels a little underpowered, although depending on what you want to use it for, its a good price for a good tablet.

The HONOR Pad 8 is available now in Blue Hour priced around £269.99.

The Nano Facial Steamer is very easy to use – just fill the water tank and switch on. Wait about a minute or so for the steam to start coming out then move your face over the steam.

The steamer will continue to produce steam for about 15 minutes when the tank is full, and the steam will gradually decrease as the water level decreases. The optimal usage time is between 5 and 10 minutes 2 or 3 times a week.

The steamer has a handle to make it easier to carry but also a mirrored surface so you can see your face.

Review: Gamesir X2 Pro

I’ve tried and tested many mobile gaming accessories. Consequently, I have a fair amount of expertise in this field. However, every day is a school day and I find new and exciting products all the time. The latest one to hit my desk is the Gamesir X2 Pro. This officially licensed Xbox accessory is up there with the best on offer.

Nacon, Backbone, Riot, and Razer all make phenomenal goods. Accordingly, it is tough for me to pick a market leader. In fact, recently, I covered another great Gamesir controller, the Gamesir X3. I loved its cooling fan, its comfortable set-up, and its style. Yet, I think the Gamesir X2 Pro offers a little more than its counterpart.

Thanks to its additional mappable buttons, free Game Pass code, and responsive controls, it makes mobile gaming an absolute pleasure. On top of this, it has pass-through charging as standard and feels and acts like an official Microsoft accessory. As such, if you love to game on the move, this could be the device for you.

Will you choose the black or white Gamesir X2 Pro?
Black or white?

What’s in the box of the Gamesir X2 Pro?

  • The external packaging is robust and colourful and screams Xbox. It is adorned with every key selling point. Furthermore, it is fully recyclable, and that’s great to see.
  • The Gamesir X2 Pro is housed within a textile carry case. This handy case is hard-wearing, water resistant, and looks stylish. The device is made from blackened plastic and has a sturdy expandable mobile phone holder. There is a USB-C connection port, and the buttons are consistent with traditional gaming controllers.
  • Additional bits. You may wish to change the feel of the analogue sticks. Well, you can with the concave and convex thumbstick caps. Simply slide them on and enjoy your new style.
  • User manual and stickers. Understand the fundamentals with the basic user guide. Alongside this, you can show your love of Gamesir with a colourful logo sticker.

Technical aspects.

One of my favourite qualities about the Gamesir X2 Pro is its custom options. With easy-to-map rear buttons, you can play like a pro. However, if this doesn’t take your fancy, you can remap the main buttons using the handy and free-to-download Gamesir app.

This fantastic application connects automatically to your controller and identifies a range of games available. What’s more, it shows which service they belong to, and how you can play them. Moreover, with your permission, it’ll automatically boot your gaming-specific apps to act as an entertainment hub for your phone.

Build quality.

Whenever you are gaming for extended periods, you need a comfortable device. Luckily, the textured grips and lightweight nature do just that. Consequently, it is no different from gaming with a traditional controller. On top of this, the additional thumbstick caps allow you to personalise your experience. Though this is a minor thing, I appreciated the flexibility and extra comfort.

Like its peers, The Gamesir X2 Pro can house most mobile phones. With a range of 110 to 179mm, many models are compatible. The same can be said for the pass-through charging facility. This fantastic piece of tech keeps you gaming and your mobile device charged. I adore any controller that includes this option and scowl when it is missing.

The Gamesir X2 Pro is compatible with many games.
It is compatible with many games.

Robust and responsive.

The device feels robust, and I liked the smooth and reassuring mobile clip. Alongside this, it has a handy one-press capture button as well as other elements we’ve all come accustomed to. As such, it is a familiar beast to use and excellent for anyone who loves to post their gaming victories.

Finally, gaming is all about the finer details. Fortunately, the Gamesir X2 Pro has a low latency connection as well as responsive inputs. Because of its Hall Effect analogue triggers, you’ll experience buttery smooth movement and unprecedented control. Moreover, the Alps 3D analogue sticks are precise and help you to compete with the best. This is then supported by the Kalih Microswitch bumpers. With a minute actuation distance of 0.6mm you’ll enjoy responsive and tactile feedback. In short, it gives you an elite setup at a fraction of the cost.

Use the Gamesir app to customise your Gamesir X2 Pro.
Use the app to customise the controller.

Is the Gamesir X2 Pro worth it?

The market is saturated with mobile gaming accessories. This torrent of devices will not stop as long as cloud gaming expands. Subsequently, picking the right device is hard. I’ve recommended many great peripherals and I stand by my words. However, I love an officially endorsed device. I find those words to be reassuring, and that’s a massive plus point.

Yet, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the product will be worth it. But, luckily, the Gamesir X2 Pro absolutely is. Thanks to its amazing build quality, easy-to-use app, pass-through charging, and user-friendly approach, I can’t fault it. Furthermore, it is also cost-effective, and it has a handy carry case to keep it safe. It is for these reasons that I recommend you buy it here!

(More information on Gamesir can be found here!)

The Gamesir X2 Pro is awarded the Movies Games and Tech Gold award.

News: House Flipper 2

0

EGX 2022 had some amazing booths and standout games. One that fascinated me was House Flipper 2 and their upcoming DLC. The original House Flipper was released over 4 years ago and was developed by a small team from Frozen District. Today, this group has expanded, and this gives them more scope to enhance their products and create more in-depth titles. Consequently, the franchise has improved vastly, and the levels of realism and eye for detail make for an enjoyable and relaxing experience.

House Flipper DLC

Many DLC packages have been released. Subsequently, a new addition to the base game isn’t a surprise. However, what shocked me was how much fun I had playing it. The Farm DLC incorporates many farming elements while retaining the original “Flipping” charm. During the demo, players are asked to clean a barn, remove rubbish, and clean the windows. Yet, there is a chance to operate a flamethrower, cut some grass, sow some crops, and get hands-on with animals.

I cherished the moment I got to ride a horse and chuckled when I soaked some cows and burnt some chickens. Now, neither of these acts hurt the animals in question, but boy, oh boy, did it make my sides hurt. Accordingly, the additional content isn’t simply an extension of the original mechanics. No, instead, it wants to create a whole new experience that complements everything we know and love. If you fancy expanding your House Flipper experience, then more information regarding the Farm DLC can be found here

House Flipper 2

A lot can change in 4 years, and House Flipper 2 demonstrates this perfectly. The much bigger, stronger, and hungrier team has put their hearts and soul into this new endeavour. Accordingly, fans of the original will see some massive improvements, a community-based approach, as well as a subliminal story that enhances the experience. Alongside this, some wonderful new mechanics improve your DIY tasks. 3 notable changes from the demo were the demolition method, painting technique, and rubbish collection. However, undoubtedly there will be more added in the coming months that’ll alter the gameplay further still.

On top of this, there is a creative sandbox mode to enjoy as well as plenty of sub-areas and multiple houses to improve. The developers are keen to make this a laid-back and fun title that appeals to existing fans and new players alike. From what I saw, I believe they are on the right path. With more information to come, I can’t wait to see where the team takes it.

If you fancy modernising your DIY experience, then why not look here for more details?

House Flipper DLC and House Flipper 2 are out next year.

I conclude with some sad news. Annoyingly, I like everyone else, will have to wait until 2023 to get my hands on a copy. Now, this may not seem too long away, but I can’t wait to get started. The one positive, though, is that it allows the team more time to add further content and polish the final product.

Watch this space, as I’ll cover both the Farm DLC and House Flipper 2 as soon as I can. In the meantime, more information can be found on Frozen District and PlayWay S.A.

Review: ROCCAT Kone XP Air

People usually scoff when they hear the words, “Gaming Peripherals”. If you don’t game, or you have never tried them, they look to be expensive and unnecessary. However, having used many high-end accessories, I can state they are game-changing and mind-blowing. One of my favourite brands is ROCCAT, and I love them because of their excellent design, their build quality, and the out-of-this-world RGB lighting. Fortunately, their latest toy, the ROCCAT Kone XP Air, outperforms any of its predecessors, and it has a funky docking station included.

The incredibly light and versatile mouse is great for everyday use, as well as being an awesome gaming tool. Thanks to its programmable inputs, monstrous battery life, ergonomic design, and 19k dpi optical sensor, this is a market-leading product. What’s more, its responsive nature will help you to beat every elite gamer you face. However, I know the marketplace is saturated, so will the ROCCAT Kone XP Air stand out amongst its peers?

A stunning peripheral for every gaming rig.

What’s in the box of the ROCCAT Kone XP Air?

  • The sturdy cardboard packaging highlights the key selling points of this phenomenal gaming mouse. Inside, however, I was disappointed to see plastic being used to protect the contents. It’s a minor thing, but I’d prefer ROCCAT to be more mindful of the environment.
  • The ROCCAT Kone XP Air. This beautifully lightweight mouse is comfortable to hold and looks fantastic. It comes in a choice of black or white, and I reviewed the black version. Unlike its predecessors, this mouse moves away from the honeycomb RGB lighting grids. But, it has 5 key lighting areas that can be customised to your liking.
  • Rapid charge docking station. A small but powerful docking station for your mouse. Never run out of juice and keep your mouse safe by docking it in this stylish and secure charging station.
  • PhantomFlex Charging cable. Use this USB-A to USB-C cable to run the mouse hardwired, or to charge the docking station.
  • User guide. With many programmable inputs, it is advised that you read this helpful user manual.

Technical aspects.

Having a stylish mouse is all well and good. But what you want is a comfortable, well-built, and responsive device that sets you apart from the crowd. Luckily, the ROCCAT Kone XP Air does just that, and using it will change the way you game, forever more.

The combination of the Owl-Eye 19k DPI optical sensor and the Titan Optical Switches makes this a super accurate and lighting-fast mouse. This uber-fast experience stands out whenever you play FPS titles or attempt any sporting game. Because of its flawless movement, your mouse will feel like an extension of your body. As such, you will excel in any competitive environment and will feel comfortable gaming against the best the industry offers. Alongside this, the quality is assured thanks to the 100 million click life cycle guarantee. Yes, you read that right, 100 million clicks make this a robust and hard-wearing mouse.

So, we know it is rapid as hell, but what about connectivity? Well, ROCCAT has spoilt us with 3 options to choose from. You may forgo the wireless method and use the PhantomFlex cable instead. This method is great if you are lacking battery life, or don’t fancy moving into the 21st century. The other 2 options are 2.4Ghz Stellar Wireless via a USB adapter or Bluetooth wireless with a low latency guarantee. I tested every option available and found the difference to be negligible. As such, I’d recommend wireless gaming for a sleek and professional touch.

If you go wireless, you may worry about the battery life of your device. Well, worry not, as the ROCCAT Kone XP Air has a phenomenal 100-hour + battery. Alongside this, the excellent RGB docking station has a rapid charging facility that’ll keep you in the game. Not only is this a handy accessory, but it complements the RGB aesthetic of the device.

Sync your devices with the Aimo-related technology.

Wonderful and useful aesthetics.

Not only does the ROCCAT Kone XP Air look spectacular, but it is also amazing for MMO titles because of its 29 programmable inputs. On top of this, there is a 4D wheel and an easy shift[+]TM duplicator. Now, this latter statement may confuse the hell out of you, but this is a simple but effective layer of technology. Effectively, this mouse allows you to map other key inputs or macros to your device. Consequently, you can outgun, out manoeuvre and outperform the best gamers at the click of a button.

As well as the extra buttons, ROCCAT has focussed on a wonderfully ergonomic design that feels comfortable in your hand. This is incredibly important when gaming for extended sessions. However, of equal importance is the PTFE gliding plates that allow the mouse to glide effortlessly. These buttery smooth pads reduce friction and ensure your experience is accurate and precise.

Finally, the ROCCAT Kone XP Air syncs with any AIMO-related technology you own. This creates a truly spectacular lighting display that is eye-opening and professional to look at. What’s more, the translucent shell enables each of the 5 RGB colour zones to be customised and easily seen.

Every RGB setup needs this mouse.

Is the ROCCAT Kone XP Air worth it?

I asked whether this would stand out amongst its peers! The answer, it absolutely destroys its rivals. Thanks to its incredible design quality, programmable inputs, vivid RGB, optical sensors, amazing battery life, and quick charging facility, this is head and shoulders above its counterparts.

Alongside all of this, you have to admire its 100 million click guarantee, the Owl-Eye 19k DPI sensor, and its ergonomic approach. If you love FPS, racing, or MMO titles, then this mouse will make all the difference. I adored the ROCCAT Kone XP Air, and I recommend you buy it here!

(More information on ROCCAT can be found here!)

Review: Apex 9 TKL

When looking at a gaming keyboard, there are many names that jump out. However, not many are as renowned as SteelSeries. This high-end brand is known for its game-changing approach and market-leading technology. Consequently, when I was offered products from the new Apex 9 range, I couldn’t resist. Today, I’m looking at the larger of the two, as I pull apart (literally at some point), the Apex 9 TKL.

Everything about this keyboard screams quality. From the metal finish to the excellent customisable RGB lighting, this looks fantastic. What’s more, its actuation points are razor thin, and this makes for a responsive and accurate time. Alongside this, swappable switches (sold separately) make this keyboard your own. So, what are we waiting for? Let’s jump right in and see what it’s like.

The Apex 9 TKL is vivid and striking.
Ohhh it’s so bright.

What’s in the box of the Apex 9 TKL?

  • The compact and stylish packaging. This robust box keeps its contents well protected. Furthermore, it highlights key selling points and is 100% recyclable.
  • The Apex 9 TKL. This stunning and hard-wearing device will look amazing next to any gaming rig. Thanks to its small design, it is the perfect accompaniment for a tighter workspace.
  • Keycap puller. Hidden underneath the keyboard body, this simple device is essential. If you wish to alter your keys, this tool is a must.
  • A USB-A to USB-C cable. This handy cable is a good length and well built.
  • User manual. A basic guide that highlights the fundamentals.

Technical aspects.

If you are shopping for a standard keyboard, you simply want comfort. However, the gaming scene demands much more. Luckily, the Apex 9 TKL delivers a lightning-fast device that looks great, feels amazing, and is built to last. What’s more, its compact design works wonders in tight spaces.

Response time is an absolute must in competitive gaming. As such, you want minimal actuation points for maximum control. With a range of 1mm for light press users and 1.5mm for ultra accuracy, your keystrokes have never felt better. Alongside this, the Apex range offers 33% faster actuation in comparison to other optical keyboards. Accordingly, you experience a 0.2ms response time with zero debounce. Now, this may not sound a lot, but when every second counts, this makes a world of difference.

The Apex 9 TKL happens to be the fastest keyboard I’ve ever used. In fact, it was so quick that I had to adjust my approach. This wasn’t a problem, but it was surprising how much difference it made. Even when typing, I noticed the difference between my ROCCAT Vulcan TKL Pro. Now, I love that keyboard, but this one may just have gazumped it.

Change your switches to personalise your keyboard.
Easy to lift keys.

Quality design.

Usability to one side, we gamers are a fickle bunch. Consequently, we want something that feels great and looks even better. Fortunately, the Apex 9 TKL has an eye-opening RGB set-up that stands out from the crowd. With many preset programs, you can adjust the style at the touch of a button. This is also true of the ability to adjust the brightness and a toggle switch to alter in-game audio. In short, everything can be changed on the fly and this makes it a phenomenal gaming companion.

We all know that keyboards take a battering. Whenever you play a game, you get a little excited. Subsequently, your peripherals often bear the brunt of your rage. Fortunately, though, the aircraft-grade aluminium case is robust and hard-wearing. Furthermore, it feels fantastic and looks incredible. Alongside this, the OptiPoint switches are rated for a whopping 100 million keystrokes! That’s unbelievably high and assures you that this is built to last.

On top of this, there are 3 resting positions to choose from. You may lay the keyboard flat, use the mini feet for slight elevation, or raise it higher with the final option. Whatever you choose, it is comfortable on your wrists for extended gaming sessions.

Finally, the switches are swappable to make the Apex 9 TKL your own. With the choice of three available, you are in total control. Tactile, clicky, and linear can be easily swapped out using the handy keycap puller. Be aware, however, that these must be sourced separately.

Make your life easier with the SteelSeries GG app.
The SteelSeries GG app.

SteelSeries GG and macros.

I was happy with the preset lighting, but you may wish to create your own. If you do, you can download the SteelSeries GG engine to map your keyboard. This intuitive software is free to download and is a go-to for every SteelSeries product. What’s more, it is easy to understand, simple to use, and will make your device personal for you.

Yet, what I loved more was the ability to record macros. By using the SteelSeries function button, you can set your macros to enhance your gaming experience. This is a fantastic addition for anyone that plays MMO titles and it complemented my presets from my ROCCAT gaming mouse. Consequently, in a competitive situation, I was one step ahead, and this is great for pro gamers and amateurs alike.

Is the Apex 9 TKL worth it?

There are many amazing keyboards on the market. Luckily, I’ve used most of them and the Apex range is among the best. Because of its excellent build quality, low actuation points, OptiPoint switches, phenomenal build quality, and custom options, this is a market leader.

The Apex 9 TKL’s responsive nature and build quality blew my mind. I was genuinely shocked by the difference it made when playing competitively. Furthermore, its stunning RGB display and excellent software make all the difference. Subsequently, I easily recommend that you buy it here

News: EGX 2022 round-up.

After last year’s EGX, I had high hopes that EGX 2022 would smash its predecessor out of the park. Fortunately, it didn’t disappoint as the crowds were excited and the publishers and developers put on a great show. With live talks, panel discussions, competitions, UK firsts, and an incredible and eclectic blend of indie titles to play, I was spoiled for choice. However, there were a few stars in the show that I can’t help but write about. Now, I was happy to see Sonic Frontiers, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, and the COD Modern Warfare 2 beta, but these weren’t standout performers. Instead, I admired 7 exhibits for a range of reasons. I adored Unknown Number: A First Person Talker, Hamster Playground, Peaky Blinders – The King’s Ransom VR, House Flipper 2, Goat Simulator 3, Potion Permit, and finally the Steam Deck. Therefore, without further ado, let’s start the EGX 2022 round-up.

EGX 2022 round-up.

Unknown Number: A First Person Talker.

It’s rare that I find a game with a unique and unusual core mechanic. However, Unknown Number: A First Person Talker has just that. Because of its innovative voice-controlled elements, you’ll experience a game like no other. The game’s narrative explores a range of phone calls that you must answer to progress. With a blend of puzzles, mini-games, and creepy undertones, it’ll make you feel uneasy and test your mind and patience. If you fancy trying something new and a little bizarre, then click here for more information!

Hamster Playground.

I don’t usually go for cute Tamagotchi-style games. Yet, Hamster Playground caught my eye. Its vivid colour palette, customisable pets, and upgradable cages will entertain and keep you busy. Furthermore, there are challenging mini-games to enjoy, races to complete, and the opportunity to compete in multiplayer action. This weird blend of Tamagotchi pet management and The Sims’ upgradable environments makes this a remarkably simple title that is strangely moreish. If you want a pet hamster, or 5, and don’t want the real-life stress, I suggest investigating the game here!

Peaky Blinders – The King’s Ransom VR.

Peaky Blinders – The King’s Ransom VR. This was one game I was thoroughly looking forward to. Being a Peaky Blinders fan, I couldn’t way to explore familiar locations while rubbing shoulders with some well-known characters. But what I couldn’t predict was how much it would blow my mind. Designed for use with an Oculus headset, this incredibly absorbing and all-consuming title is both exciting and immersive. What’s more, it is full of hidden Easter eggs; it has a semi-linear story to follow and has oodles of collectables. Moreover, you are free to explore each location as you wish. This was phenomenal, as the more you look, the finer the world appears.

Alongside this, the combat mechanics are fantastic, the controls are smooth and intuitive, and the story is “approved” by Steve Knight. Accordingly, it retains all of its dank charms and grimy undertones and also has wonderful audio. Set between series 4 and 5, it loosely links in with some key moments, but any prior knowledge isn’t necessary. This was great for newcomers to the series, or those gamers who consider themselves casual fans. As such, you’ll love unleashing a torrent of bullets as you destroy your foes, complete each task, and step one step closer to the truth. If this has sparked your interest, more information can be found here!

House Flipper 2.

Who doesn’t love a great simulation title? These amazing and ultra-realistic games are time-consuming, enjoyable, and a little addictive. Furthermore, House Flipper 2 retains some of the key mechanics from the first instalment with some much-needed and well-oiled new elements. With a new rubbish collection method, a more accurate painting system, and some interesting ways to destroy each property, it feels smoother and more user-friendly. On top of this, there is a subliminal story to enjoy, a varied and more rewarding contract system, and an architectural sandbox option. The latter is key, as it allows its player base to enjoy the game while getting their creative juices flowing. If you wish to make a quick buck and test your DIY skills, then look no further!

Goat Simulator 3.

If you’ve never heard of Goat Simulator, you’ve probably been living under a rock. But, if you have, you’ll know that it is a zany and whacky affair that makes you laugh while teasing you relentlessly. Well, now is the time to rejoice as Goat Simulator 3 has a release date! Due to hit next-gen consoles and PC via the Epic Store on November 17th 2022. This ridiculously crazy sequel will make your sides hurt as you tackle goat-related shenanigans and a range of tasty and clever jokes.

The developers have worked hard to retain much of the original charm, but they have also listened to their fanbase. With some massive improvements to graphics, a phenomenal soundscape, excellent controls, amazing custom options, a brilliant story comprising an interesting progression ark, and most importantly, up to 4 players multiplayer action, this is sure to grab your attention. Alongside this, you can now drive cars, grind rails, take part in multiplayer mini-games, explore 1.1 million square goatage of land, and much, much more. Consequently, if you enjoyed the first instalment, you won’t want to miss this. More information about the game can be found here!

Potion Permit.

What happens when you cross Harvest Moon with Stardew Valley? You get Potion Permit! This is PQube’s latest title that blends some heartfelt storytelling with interesting adventure mechanics. You control a young chemist who is called upon to save the mayor’s daughter. However, the rest of the townsfolk are wary of your arrival and you are given the cold shoulder. Accordingly, you must help each individual to build a relationship of trust.

With an array of colourful characters, interesting locations, and potions to brew, this game will keep you busy. Furthermore, there are some interesting puzzle mechanics that will keep you on your toes while adding a degree of difficulty. Fortunately, the developers are keen to keep their players interested, so you can improve your facilities and heal a never-ending list of patients. Subsequently, once the main story is over, you can play it casually to your heart’s content. If this seems like something you’d like, then take a look here!

Steam Deck.

Finally, I can end my EGX 2022 round-up with the phenomenal Steam Deck. This amazing piece of kit has been sold out repeatedly and is still hard to come by. Yet, if you can get your hands on one, you will be extremely happy. With an amazing build quality, crystal clear screen, and a comfortable weight to handle, this is an exceptional mobile gaming device. Moreover, it is compatible with a ridiculously large library of games, has an incredible battery life, and can be docked for a home gaming experience. My only complaint would be the low speaker volume, but this is a minor thing if you game with headphones. If you want to find out more, look no further!

That concludes my EGX 2022 round-up.

Now, my snippet of games reflects my gaming preferences, and there are plenty of other amazing titles to see. Over the coming days, I’m sure the hordes of people entering the Excel Centre will find their favourites, and the developers and publishers will finish the event with a newfound fan base. Many of the titles I’ve mentioned will be reviewed and investigated over the coming weeks, so keep your eyes peeled. If you come to London for the show, enjoy the madness, be kind to your fellow gamers and the exhibitors, and revel in a job well done by the team behind EGX.

EGX 2022 – Hands-On with Sonic Frontiers!

0

Well, it’s here, EGX 2022 is upon us! If you aren’t familiar with the convention, check out this post, which breaks it down for you!

One of the first things I checked out was Sonic Frontiers, showcasing a demo of the yet-to-be-released next-gen game. Sonic Frontiers is a Sonic platformer like nothing we’ve seen before in the franchise. Promising an open-world platforming experience you take Sonic on an amazing adventure across five overworld islands. In search of the Chaos emeralds, Sonic is stranded on a mysterious island and must use the power of the ancients to stop mysterious new foes.

In Sonic Frontiers you get unparalleled high-speed freedom as you roam the world encountering enemies, puzzles, and bosses alike. You can also teleport yourself to Cyber Space where your reflexes will be pushed to the next level as you race your way through more traditional 3D platforming experiences. The combination of open world and signature platformer is bound to entice new players to the franchise. Not to mention those of us who still remember the originals.

Sonic Frontiers Trailer

My Experience Playing Sonic Frontiers

Taking my seat in the demo booth I booted up and was straight into a cutscene setting up the story. The visuals were fantastic as were the music and voice acting. I won’t go into any story details to avoid spoilers, but I am intrigued to find out more!

Once the short cutscene was over I arrived in a beautiful forest landscape and took control of Sonic in a free-roam capacity. All the moves were there – spinning, speed boosting, jumping, attacking as they should be and there are plenty of interactions on the map to perform cool tricks, gain insane levels of speed and collect those gold rings. The controls felt natural, and I didn’t have any issues remembering what does what. What I particularly thought was very well implemented was the tutorial elements. As you progress or rather roam, you encounter new scenarios, and you’ll jump out of the game world to practice a move before putting it to the test. This is a nice feature, especially when new combos are introduced.

By far, hands down, this game is stunning to look at. Like seriously stunning. The visual artwork is a wonder. I already know I want to play the full game on a next-gen console or on a high-end gaming PC. I’m not sure at the time of writing if the game will be Steam Deck approved… but if so, PC may just personally win out for me for that additional option of portability.

Upon completing some puzzles, fighting some monsters, and a mini-boss you unlock a portal to Cyber Space, and this is where things got high-octane. I was already impressed with the visual spectacle of the blue blur performing loop-the-loops, but I wasn’t necessarily prepared for the speed of Cyber Space levels. These feel like traditional Sonic but with much more impressive visuals. I’m glad to say I just about held in there leaping from rails, jumping over things, and generally trying to get all the coins!

Final Thoughts on Sonic Frontiers

If you love Sonic, I just can’t see you being disappointed by this game at all. If you’re in the market for a fast-paced, part open-world, part traditional 3D action platformer – this could be the game for you. One thing is certain, I can’t wait to get my hands on the final game! Also, have I mentioned it’s beautiful?

Review: Train Life – A railway simulator

Simulators have never been my genre but Train life- A railway simulator might be the game to change that. For those who don’t know what simulators are, it is a genre of games centered around placing players in various roles that require players to act out the role that they are put in with various levels of details. There are a ton of simulation games that range from flight simulation to things such as mowing lawns. Train Life has players in charge of their own delivery company while also traversing the land in their own train.

The story is light since players will take the role of a newly licensed conductor. The tutorial takes players through a practice exam that goes over everything from starting the train to adjusting the many settings presented. After players finish up the tutorial, they can take on different jobs from different companies so that they are able to upgrade their company. Money is also spent on the upkeep for the train, so players really must make sure they are careful during the ride to minimalize any costs. Players are able to stop to fuel up the train as well as pay for any repairs caused by things such as pulling the emergency break for last minute stops.

Train Life lets players control the train from two different perspectives. Players can have a view outside of the train where they can turn the camera around the see the other carts attached to their train. This is probably the best way to start so that players can gauge how long it takes their train to come to a complete stop as well as look at any terrain changes coming along the tracks. If players aren’t careful, they may not stop in time when going down a hill and might run into another train or pass their destination. Once players get accustomed to how the train process works, they can move into a 1st person view and get a look up close at everything going on.

When players are the sky view camera setting, they can handle a lot of the controls on the keyboard with various gauges to help with the navigation. There are indicators for how fast the train is going as well as if the train has its emergency break on. In 1st person mode, players can still control the train with the keyboard but can also interact with all sorts of levers and switches from the inside of the train. There is even an in-game radio that offers a multitude of stations that players can listen to, and I would be lying if I said that the talk show channel was boring.

Train life- A railway simulator is a beautiful game as well with all the scenery as players pass by. The trains offer a lot of detail from both the inside as well as the outside and I found myself being pulled further into the simulation as I passed by signs telling me I was going too fast or during moments when I realized that the train needed some fuel. This is definitely a fun game for those looking to get into the genre but is also good for those who have a lot of experience in the genre.

Review: Beacon Pines

Occasionally, games come along and bowl you over. It can be their wonderful plot, charismatic protagonists, or intriguing gameplay that knocks you for six. Fortunately for me, Beacon Pines has all these things and more. I was touched by its excellent story, laughed at its humorous script, and enjoyed its whimsical blend of characters. Furthermore, it’s coming to Xbox Game Pass, so that’s a bonus as well.

Developed by Hiding Spot and published by Fellow Traveller, this is a story-rich adventure title. What’s more, it has a visual novel edge and you control the flow of the gameplay. With a shifting story and many subplots to follow, it could be confusing. However, instead, it flows beautifully from one moment to the next as you unfold a deep-seated and sinister plot.

Beacon Pines has many suspenseful moments.
I sense danger!

Beacon Pines is a story within a story.

You play the role of both reader and protagonist. The action revolves around a mysterious book that comprises an ever-changing story. Consequently, the plot ebbs and flows depending on the choices you make and the relationships that form. You control Luka, an anthropomorphic deer who is sadly orphaned. However, he doesn’t let this bring him down, as he always sees the best in his surroundings. He has a close-knit friendship circle and when the group notice things going wrong; they decide to investigate. Accordingly, they make some life-changing discoveries that impact their existence. Will they make the right choices, or will you return to alter each scene?

Beacon Pines is more than this basic concept, however. The action is gripping and dramatic because of the innocence of the heroes and the amazing narrative. At every key point, a soft but interesting narrator jumps in to explain the scene. The wonderful timing sucks you into the moment and enhances the immersive nature of the story. Moreover, the varied delivery of each line helps to build empathy. Alternatively, you’ll despise the pantomime villain and their followers as the story unfolds, and the deception becomes clearer.

This was delivered perfectly while removing the repetitive elements of the gameplay. With multiple visits to the same scene, it could become tiresome. Yet, it never did as the story changes depending on the “charm” you select. This intriguing mechanic is central to Beacon Pines‘ plot while expanding the minor exploration elements.

Which charm will you select?
It’s time to ponder.

Charms and being nosy.

As you explore the stunning and quaint hamlet of Beacon Pines, you’ll discover secret charms. These magical collectables embody a moment-altering word. Whether it was anger, fight, sly, chill, or more, they have a vast impact on specific scenes. For example, Luka and a new friend are cornered by the local bullies. With two choices available, you can fight or tickle your way out of it. Yet, whichever you choose impacts their relationships and the life of each child. Therefore, you must select wisely if you wish to find the perfect ending.

So, where are all these charms? Now, this is part of Beacon Pines’ brilliance. By exploring your surroundings and interacting with the locals, you experience a rich sense of belonging while happily seeing every hidden location. On top of this, you’ll uncover snippets of information that lead to eureka moments. It was incredible how wonderfully intricate each minor element was.

Beacon Pines is awash with charismatic colours.

The world of Beacon Pines is a lush blend of rich colours and wintry tundra. The small hamlet is easy to explore and comprises many intricate buildings and some lovely environments. Alongside this, there are some fantastic character models and some brilliant still imagery. However, the pièce de résistance is the 3D book. The animation of the pages and the watercolour pictures add magic and mystery to this touching game. I loved the fantasy and scientific edge that added a shroud of mystery throughout.

The visuals are matched by the excellent audio. With touching and emotive music, you’ll be absorbed by the slow pace and the many twists and turns. However, not everything is rosy as each of the character’s dialogue is mimicked by irritating sound effects. This was absolutely unnecessary and soon become tiresome. Consequently, it undermines the finish and is somewhat grating. Had the developers chosen a different approach, the audio would have been much better.

Luka is everyone's friend.
Everyone loves Luka.

Occasionally cumbersome controls.

With some tight spaces to explore, the controls are occasionally cumbersome. Accordingly, you’ll collide with furniture and will be halted in your tracks. Now, this wasn’t game-breaking, but it was annoying nonetheless. Other than this issue, the controls are well laid out, easy to follow, and simple to master. Flitting between story branches was simple, and selecting each charm was straightforward. Furthermore, finding any interactive object was easy thanks to handy labels. Thankfully, though, the charms weren’t so obvious and this added a layer of difficulty to proceedings.

With many subplots to explore and plenty of charms to find, this has longevity and replay value. However, once you’ve seen every possibility, there is no reason to return. Yet, the developers have set it up nicely for a sequel, so I can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Beacon Pines is fantastic.

I loved Beacon Pines from beginning to end. The wonderful characters, excellent narration, and fun and twisted story were captivating. If you then add that it’s available on Game Pass, then you have nothing to lose. I adored it and I recommend you buy it here! Can you uncover the truth, or will the correct words elude you?
