However, if you love to hot-swap your keys or customise your peripherals, you may become frustrated. Yet, this shouldn’t be a deal breaker as the keycap profile and responsive switches will impress the toughest of critics.

Technical aspects.

I adore it when a company creates its switches. Now, this may not float everyone’s boat, but the Holy Panda X Switches sound cool, and they deliver pinpoint accuracy. These tactile switches are complemented by the Phantom Stabilisers and this is a marriage made in heaven. Not only does it create an impressive typing experience, but they sound great and feel pleasant to use. Consequently, they are fantastic during marathon gaming sessions or if you are typing a work email.

Alongside this, the MT3 Dwarvish keycap profile has a pleasant curvature that hugs the tips of your fingers. As such, I enjoyed playing every game and typing documents with improved accuracy and comfort. Additionally, the travel distance and response rate of the switches make this an ideal gaming keyboard. 

Build quality.

Where the DROP LOTR Dwarvish keyboard excels is its incredible build quality. However, I want to address one issue before I continue. The supplied USB-C cable doesn’t match this product’s chunky and impressive nature. I’d have expected a robust and colour-matched coiled cable. Instead, you are provided with a suitable but disappointing lightweight alternative. As such, I will change the cable to improve the overall aesthetic.

This problem to one side, you will be blown away by every other aspect. The solid case is heavy and impressive. Moreover, the colour palette matches the theme and transports you to a fantasy world. Additionally, the OSHETART artwork is stunning and the immense Dwarvish runes are complemented by the dark grey anodised aluminium case.

On top of this, the Holy Panda X Switches deliver a glorious clicking sound that is noisy and reassuringly loud. Consequently, if you adore a solid unit that feels great and sounds incredible, this is the keyboard for you.

Is the DROP LOTR Dwarvish keyboard worth it?

The gaming keyboard market is saturated. Subsequently, getting the right one is no easy task. Technical aspects.

Gaming keyboards have to do a lot to appease their audience. Not only do they have to look great, but they have to be responsive and comfortable. On top of this, there are an array of switches to consider and keycap profiles to choose from. As such, getting the right one for your needs is easier said than done. However, the MOD 007 PC keyboard will ensure that many gamers will grin from ear to ear.

The AKKO magnetic switches are linear whilst delivering a small 4 mm travel distance. Alongside this, they can be customised to improve response rates and usability. With the help of the AKKO software, you can use the Rapid Trigger option. As the magnetic switches have no trigger point, you can lightly tap a key repeatedly to create a fast-paced stream of non-stop inputs. This was a phenomenal option if you love FPS or rhythm-based titles.

However, that is not all! Alongside the RT option, you can incorporate Dynamic Keystrokes (DKS). This challenging-to-understand concept allows you to map 4 inputs to one single keystroke. As such, depending on how heavily you push the key, you’ll activate a different command. Now, this may seem confusing, yet in practice, it is easy to follow. Consequently, once you get used to it, you’ll improve your speed and accuracy.

Hot swap.

If the included magnetic switches don’t take your fancy, you can swap them for regular magnetic switches or 3-pin mechanical switches. However, I urge you to stick with the provided options as they are unbelievably smooth. The included switches have adopted a Hall Effect sensor and this ensures you’ll enjoy faster and more precise keystrokes.

Build quality.

Everything about the MOD 007 PC Keyboard screams “Look at me!”. This awesome peripheral is well-built and stunning to look at. Thanks to the durable PBT materials, the vibrant colours and characters will not fade with time. On top of this, the mechanical switches are robust and will take a pounding before they fail. Moreover, the Gasket Mount material ensures that the typing experience is softer and less harsh than some of its mechanical counterparts.

You may be wondering about RGB lighting. Well, luckily, this keyboard has south-facing RGB backlighting. This was an excellent choice as the keyboard is vibrant enough without an obnoxious light show. Furthermore, if you wish to increase or decrease the brightness you can do so with the chunky control knob. Additionally, this will reduce or increase the volume of music as well.

Finally, the OEM keycaps were comfortable to use. When you complement these with the gasket mount material and the mechanical switches, you have a relaxed and comfortable typing experience.

Is the MOD 007 PC Keyboard worth it?

I adored every element of the MOD 007 PC Keyboard. Not only was it enjoyable to use, but the RT and DKS functionality made it stand out from its peers. Moreover, the magnetic switches are responsive and the build quality is phenomenal. I also loved the ability to hot-swap to a mechanical alternative if you so wished. Preview: Silence of the Siren

Silence of the Siren is an Alpha title that aims to hit Early Access in 2024. The demo version is limited, but I can see the strong potential on offer. Moreover, the art style, excellent UI, and impressive depth kept me coming back for more. However, due to my restricted access, I am only able to give you a highlight of my time with this title.

This turn-based strategy title was developed and published by Oxymoron Games. Moreover, it comprises some exploration elements and can be enjoyed casually between other titles. At the moment, it is restricted to single-player action. Yet, the team assured me that multiplayer action will be at the core of everything they do. Alongside this, there will be an interesting and rich story as well as fun and challenging skirmish maps.

Which way will you go?

Silence of the Siren parallels humanity.

Unfortunately, humans are greedy and untrustworthy. As such, whenever they see something of worth, they’ll do anything to get their hands on it. Unfortunately, this horrific idea forms the backbone of Silence of the Siren. Accordingly, you’ll experience betrayal, extinction, and never-ending feuds.

The Siren star system has been cut from the rest of the galaxy. As such, the remaining civilisations form a flimsy alliance to preserve their way of life. However, few of the creatures acknowledge these rules and ungodly warfare is the result. Subsequently, you must stay ahead of the game and fight to stay alive.

Plenty of trial and error.

Though this is a demo, the core gameplay is strong and every mechanic is well-considered. Yet, a lack of a tutorial ensured that I was stabbing about in the dark to find a solution. Moreover, much of my time was spent testing new ideas and stumbling my way through. Now, this may seem like a negative, but I liked being left to my own devices. What’s more, when I got things right, the action was rewarding.

The skirmish mode allows you to face off with an AI opponent. Along the way, you’ll discover armies of monsters, buildings to explore, and plenty of resources and collectables. Additionally, you must expand your base, hire new commanders, and convince soldiers to join your ranks. If you can do this, you can make an all-powerful army that can tackle the toughest of opponents.

Combat and exploration.

The exploration element of the gameplay asks you to scour vast spaces. During your expeditions, you’ll stumble across valuable assets that can improve your bank balance or your XP. However, where there is reward, there is risk. Unfortunately, you may discover a powerful army of bugs that want to slice you apart.

The combat aspect of the action focuses on classic turn-based mechanics. As such, you must utilise any special abilities or upgraded units to your advantage. What’s more, you soon learn that your troop’s placement is paramount to your success. Accordingly, you must understand your troops and your opponents’ if you wish to succeed.

Silence of the Siren looks great.

As Silence of the Siren is an Alpha demo, I set my hopes accordingly. As such, I expected it to be laced with bugs and glitches and to crash repeatedly. However, other than some minor issues, I have nothing but high praise for the development team. Alongside this, the game looks great! I adore the top-down perspective and the earthy colour palette. Moreover, the fantasy elements are fascinating and well-considered. On top of this, the UI is easy to navigate and the screen is clutter-free.

The audio is just as good. The haunting soundtrack is dramatic and atmospheric. Additionally, the cruel sound effects are disgustingly brilliant. Therefore, you’ll lose yourself in this oppressive and daunting fantasy world.

A steep learning curve.

It would be remiss of me to ignore the steep learning curve. However, if you love this genre, you know the score. Yet, once you get over the initial hurdles, you’ll love the depth and complexity of each mechanic on offer. Thankfully, once the tutorial element is added to the Early Access build, I believe that this issue will be vastly reduced.

The road map for Silence of the Siren looks promising. With plenty of factions to test out and multiplayer action on the cards, I think this will ooze replay value and longevity. Additionally, there will be a story mode to keep you busy and plenty of units to unlock and upgrade. As such, it’ll be loaded with depth and challenging action.

Silence of the Siren has a promising future.

I loved this game at EGX 2023 and I can’t wait to see how it evolves. In its current build, it was fascinating to play. However, I think it can only get better. The developers are keen to deliver an exceptional experience and by this evidence, 2024 will be a wonderful year for them. Consequently, show them your support and wish list it here!

Why is making video games based on movies and vice-versa so difficult?

Veteran gamers will already be familiar with one of the great frustrations of the games industry. No, we’re not talking about day-one patches because publishers rushed out releases. We’re thinking about another kind of dismay entirely, and that’s when some bright sparks decide to turn our favourite video games into movies.

Right now there seems to be a plethora of such movies hitting our cinema screens. Over the last couple of years, we’ve had several. There was Mortal Kombat and Werewolves Within, followed by Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City in 2021, then Uncharted and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 2022. We’ve also had The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Five Nights at Freddy’s in 2023.

If history is any indication, most of them usually end up being utter pants, not worth the price of admission, often horrifying for true fans of the original games. Don’t believe us? Just take a look at this IMDB list of reviews at https://www.imdb.com/list/ls056636545/

The same thing also happens in reverse, with practically every major cinema blockbuster accompanied by their very own licensed video games, and they too come with their own particular variety of success or failure. Since the first “official” licensed movie to game title was Raiders of the Lost Ark back in 1982, released on the Atari 2600 console, it almost seems commonplace for every major movie feature a game release.

But it would seem that trend is also slowing down, mostly because bigger budget AAA games can take anywhere between two and four years to produce. For a lot of major studios, that’s too long to wait as part of their merchandising revenue cycle. That being said, it does open up the door for smaller games studios to throw their hat in the ring, and we have seen a few more of those lately.
