Upgrade your Windows Home Server with Amahi

If you want to upgrade your Windows Home Server with Amahi, then the How to Geek has a guide for you.

Here is the how the article begins:

Windows Home Server (WHS) is one of the most reliable and feature rich network attached storage devices on the market. However, WHS 2011 removed some key features. If you’re looking for an upgrade without losing features, look no further than Amahi.

A few praised features of Windows Home Server when it launched in 2007 were:

  • Drive extender: allows for multi-disk redundancy and combines multiple drives into a single shared space
  • Remote access: access to the server from on and off your network
  • Add-ins: adds functionality to your WHS without needing to figure out complicated configurations

Windows Home Server 2011 has recently come out but it removes the drive extender feature, requires a 40% faster CPU (1.4 Ghz), and 4 times the RAM (2 GB) as its predecessor. If you’re looking for an upgrade, but don’t want to lose the functionality you have now, the open source project Amahi may be the perfect solution for you.

Amahi is a Linux distribution built on Fedora (an Ubuntu based system is in the works) that makes setting up a home NAS easy. In addition to what other Linux/BSD based NAS distributions give you, Amahi has easy remote access with automatic dynamic DNS updates, drive extender functionality with greyhole, and one click install add-ins via their “don’t call it an App Store” repository.

Final Thoughts

The AluPen comes in six different colours – silver, blue, green, yellow, black and red, so there is no shortage of colours to choose from!

I really liked the AluPen, it was really easy to use and was a lot better than continually using my finger, The inclusion of a carry case was a really good idea and proved very useful when transporting the AluPen so as to keep the tip clean.

If you have an iPad or iPhone, or any other sort of tablet or slate, then you should really consider getting an AluPen – you won’t regret it.

Price wise, the AluPen retails for around £19.99 but you can find it for around £15 online.

Here is what Sony said:

· Highest-resolution Exmor R CMOS Image Sensor yet (16.2 effective megapixel) with Full HD AVCHD movie

  • Clear Image Zoom up to 10x with new ‘By Pixel Super Resolution’ technology
  • Shoot 12 megapixel-level still photos during Full HD movie recording
  • Just 12.2mm** slim with 8.3cm (3.3”) wide OLED touch-screen; compatible with Memory Stick Micro™ (M2) and MicroSD cards
  • Intelligent Sweep Panorama HR mode, 3D Sweep Panorama and 3D Still Image
  • Exciting in-camera artistic treatments with Picture Effect

* Among models with an optical anti-shaking system function as of 20 July, 2011. Based on Sony internal survey.

**Measurement excludes lens cover.

At just 12.2mm thick the new TX55 Cyber-shot™ camera from Sony has an iconic design and is the slimmest Cyber-shot™ yet. Despite its tiny dimensions it’s packed with features that make it incredibly easy to capture the moment with amazing still photos, Full HD video and amazing 3D images.

Enabling its incredible slimness, the TX55 is the first Cyber-shot™ camera that includes a slot to accept Memory Stick Micro™ (M2) and MicroSD/SDHC flash memory cards. Sony offers a choice of ultra-compact, high quality media in capacities up to 16GB (newly introduced M2 Mark2, ideal for AVCHD video shooting) / 8GB (microSDHC). All cards come with free PC software (available via download), File Rescue for quick, easy recovery of deleted or damaged photos and files, and x-Pict Story™ that simplifies creation of dazzling slideshows from your photos.

Packed into the tiny body of the  Cyber-shot™ TX55 is a 16.2 megapixel Exmor R™ CMOS sensor, for unsurpassed image quality in any light conditions. It also boasts new ‘By Pixel Super Resolution’ technology that boosts zoom range to 10x without any loss of quality at the image sensor’s maximum resolution (16.2 million pixels).

For further improvements in all conditions the Superior Auto mode can be activated for both stills and movie shooting, recognising 36 scenes, such as Twilight when the advanced mode takes two shots so the best can be selected.  Or Portrait mode when the camera uses the anti-blink function.

What’s more it features a large 8.3cm/3.3″ Xtra Fine capacitive OLED wide touch screen making framing and reviewing still images and movie clips incredibly easy.

Movies can be captured in Full HD AVCHD as well as 16.2 megapixel still images. It also shoots super-detailed panoramas with 42.9 megapixel resolution, 3D Sweep Panorama and 3D Still Image to enjoy on your 3D TV[1].

Another new introduction is ‘Clear Image Zoom’ that boosts magnification without lowering pixel count in the final image. Exclusive to Sony, ‘By Pixel Super Resolution’ processing further extends the camera’s 5x optical zoom range, allowing full-resolution 16.2 megapixel images with a maximum 10x zoom.

‘By Pixel Super Resolution’ technology also significantly boosts still image quality during movie recording. At the touch of the shutter button, ‘Dual Rec’ grabs up to 10 detail-packed 12 megapixel-level still photos without interrupting Full HD video shooting.

Newly enhanced with additional optical image stabilisation for vertical and horizontal handshake correction, Optical SteadyShot Active Mode*** compensates for handheld camera movements during Full HD video shooting. You’ll enjoy crisper, blur-free movie clips at all zoom settings, even if you’re holding the camera while walking.

Intelligent Sweep Panorama also features HR (High Resolution) mode, letting you capture breath-taking 42.9 megapixel panoramas. Just sweep the camera: then enjoy the results on your connected HD TV, or zoom in with PlayStation3 to reveal the finest details.

3D Still Image captures dramatic 3D photos, simply press the shutter button once: 3D Still Image grabs a pair of frames in quick succession, estimating depth information to create a dramatic three-dimensional still image. Other 3D shooting options include 3D Sweep Panorama and Sweep Multi Angle.

The incorporation of a highly sensitive Exmor R™ CMOS sensor with 16.2 effective megapixels resolution means that whether shooting still images or Full HD video, you’ll be rewarded with incredible image detail and ultra-low picture noise – even in low light conditions.

Making its Cyber-shot™ debut on the TX55, Picture Effect mode broadens everybody’s artistic options with an exciting range of in-camera image treatments. You don’t need special editing software: just press the shutter button. A choice of seven Picture Effect options includes HDR Painting, Rich-tone Monochrome, Miniature, Toy Camera, Partial Colour, Pop Colour and Soft High-key.What’s more the TX55 can  achieve DSLR-like picture quality without fuss. Superior Auto mode recognises a wide range of shooting situations, adjusting exposure and other settings for more professional-looking images with low noise and high dynamic range.

The compact, beautifully styled new Cyber-shot™ TX55 is available from September 2011. The range of MSA[X]GN2 memory Stick Micro™ and SR[X] series MicroSD/SDHC media cards are available now.

Also available is a soft and sleek but padded case LCS-TWH, which comes in a range of colours. To keep the beautiful touchscreen looking slick, try the PCK-L33WCS screen cover, and BC-TRN2 is perfect for fast battery charging.

* Among models with an optical anti-shaking system function as of July 20, 2011. Based on Sony internal survey.

Release v1.1.5.9 – beta (2011-07-25)

– Update: Much improved read / write performance when there is heavy I/O.
– Bug fix: Video streaming (with Smooth Stream disabled) no longer stutters if there is are write operations being performed.
– Update: Client logging information improved.

Sonos and Mac OS X Lion Problem – An Update

3

Earlier this week we reported that Sonos were warning users not to upgrade to Mac OS X Lion because of some issues. Now they have issued an update and an offer of joining a beta test.

play3_angle__thumb

Here is the update from Sonos:

Update to Mac users on OS X 10.7 (Lion) support on Sonos

I’d like to apologize to all of our Mac OS X customers for the incompatibilities between Sonos and the Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) release, and for our delay in communicating this issue. Here’s a little more background on the problem and our plans for resolving it.
What is the Problem?
Music shares on Mac OS X 10.7 cannot be accessed by Sonos. You cannot create new music shares on Lion. If you store your music on your Mac and upgrade your system to Lion, Sonos will no longer be able to access that music. This affects all versions of Sonos software, including our most recent release (3.5).
This only affects music shares. There are no other known incompatibilities between Mac OS X 10.7 and Sonos.
How Did This Happen?
Sonos accesses file shares using the SMB file-sharing protocol. As part of the Lion release, Apple switched their SMB server from the open-source Samba implementation to an internal implementation. Not surprisingly, this had a fair amount of fallout.
Sonos ZonePlayers could not access Lion file shares at all in the initial developer updates. It took a combination of changes in both Lion and the Sonos code, but by June we had worked through the incompatibilities. These changes are in our most recent software release (3.5).
However, there were still issues with setting up the file shares. The method we used with the Samba SMB server no longer worked with Lion. Even worse, the Lion upgrade process does not preserve the shares created by Sonos in earlier versions of Mac OS X. We filed a bug with Apple but they were unable to address the issue prior to launch. We worked through June and July to support the creation of new shares and the restoration of shares from earlier versions. Our goal was to get that code into our 3.5 release. However, there are many different use cases for local music sharing and we were unable to cover them all before our launch.
When Will You Fix the Problem?
We have a candidate solution for the general file sharing problem at this point. We estimate it will take two-to-four weeks to test this, resolve any issues that come up, and release it in a software update.
However, there is still a bug in Lion that we cannot work around. The Lion release does not support sharing drives formatted as FAT32. Apple formats its drives using HFS, not FAT32, but you can buy external drives that are FAT32. For instance, most off-the-shelf memory sticks are formatted as FAT32. This means that, even with our proposed fix, any Sonos customers who have their music on an external FAT32 drive will have to move it to a drive formatted as HFS.
Why Didn’t You Tell Us Until After Lion Shipped?
We dropped the ball here. Once we realized that neither the official Mac OS X 10.7 release nor the Sonos 3.5 release would fix the problem we should have sent an email right away. However, by the time we realized we would be unable to get a fix into Sonos 3.5, we were very close to releasing the software. We thought it would be less confusing to send the email after the 3.5 release. Unfortunately, we learned the evening before our launch that Lion was launching the same day. With all the distractions of our official launch it took us until the next day to get our email out.
What Can I Do in the Meantime?
If you can delay upgrading to Lion, that would be simplest. If you need to upgrade (or if you upgraded before you received our email) one option is to move your music to a different device. If that is not an option and you are interested in being a beta candidate for our new release you can contact Sonos Support at Sonos-BetaApplication@sonos.com.
Again, I apologize for the inconvenience. I can assure you that this is our highest priority.
Sincerely,
Andrew Schulert
VP, Quality

HumuHumu Windows Home Server 2011 – Hands-on Review

Recently we told you about the new Windows Home Server 2011 from HumuHumu. We unboxed it, and we have been using it. So now it’s time for the hands-on review.

UWHS Review : HumuHumu Windows Home Server 2011

Windows Home Server 2011 has been out for a little while now, and since then there have been very few WHS 2011 boxes released. In fact, including the new HumuHumu box, there have only been two others – one from Tranquil and one from Viridian. And all three of these boxes come from UK companies. We still haven’t seen a box from any of the big players, even though there have been announcements from Acer.

Who are HumuHumu?

From their website:

So what is HumuHumu all about. Well, we’re an exciting new company based in Milton Keynes that specialises in Microsoft Windows Home Server 2011 technology. If you’ve looked at the front page and answered “yes” to any of those questions, then you need our product.

Office for Mac 2011 on Lion – Some Issues You May Need to Know

4

If you are now running Lion, and you have Office for Mac 2011, there are a few issues you may need to be aware of.

Office Mac 2011 Logo

Here is what Microsoft have said:

We’ve been getting a lot of questions about running Office for Mac 2011 on Lion, so we’re offering this post to help inform your decision about when to upgrade to Lion.

We’ve been working with Apple from the early days of Lion, and collectively have been able to address many issues leading up to the Lion release. Many of our Office for Mac engineers have been running Lion for months, and are generally having no problems running Office 2011 on it.

There are two large- and several smaller Office for Mac 2011 issues (on Lion) that we want to highlight. First, Communicator for Mac crashes when you send an instant message or start an audio/visual call. We will fix this issue in an upcoming update to Communicator for Mac. (Note that many users may never use Communicator, because it’s a corporate product, and not included with the mainline Office products.)

Second, on Lion, Outlook can’t import mail from Apple Mail. We’re reviewing this and don’t yet have a plan to fix it. However, if your mail is already in Outlook, then this issue won’t affect you.

The smaller Office issues are fairly minor or cosmetic, things like windows that might not align as they did in Snow Leopard, and we will continue to work together with Apple to fix these in our next regular updates.

Office 2008 will also benefit from a couple of updates. While our first priority is Office 2011, we will fully test and take care of any significant issues on 2008 as well.

If you’re thinking about upgrading to Lion soon, be prepared for the Communicator and Outlook issues, and a few other small issues, but rest assured we will have updates available through our Automatic Updates channel in the near future.

And if you’d like the latest info at any time, please check the Office for Mac Knowledge Base for complete details.

Thank you for your questions and keep ‘em coming!

Home Server Status for Windows Home Server 2011 Version 1.01 Released

Do you miss some of the information you used to see in WHS V1? Well Jerry Wade has written an app that brings that information to WHS 2011 and it’s just been updated to version 1.01.

Home-Server-Status_thumb

This is how Jerry describes this app:

It wasn’t long ago I told my friend, John, about my wonderful WHSv1. He decided to create his own box and use WHS 2011. However, he noticed that the icon did not give him the same information as mine such as, connectivity and backup in progress (eg: blue icon). After pondering over this, I decided to put my limited programming skills to work and develop a home server status application. So, without further hesitation, world, humbly meet: Home Server Status v1.0.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • .NET Framework 4
  • WHS 2011 Connector
  • Windows 7 32/64-bit machine. (Why only Windows 7? Well, it offered the features I wanted to see such as, the overlay icons and taskbar pinning.)

There is one minor issue when pinning Home Server Status to the taskbar: When you pin the icon to your taskbar, you will notice that the icon changes to the default. Just go back into settings and reselect the icon again or simply press close/update. This is not a problem with HSS, but with the way Microsoft creates their pinned icons and how I chose to handle them.

screen1_thumb screen2_thumb

This is what is included in version 1.01:

1. I added a better routine for notifications of when a backup is running, completed, and cancelled.

2. I have added status messages to the taskbar icon. When you mouse-over, you get the thumbnail view but with status and a backup button that takes you directly to the backup properties dialog.

3. At user’s request, I have added the ability to double-click the tray icon and go to the dashboard when using classic tray icons.

To use the new version:

1. If one plans to use the installer then they must first UNINSTALL PREVIOUS and then run setup.exe

or

2. Simply replace your existing .exe file in the Win7-32bit C:\Program Files\Home Server Status or Win7-64bit C:\Program Files (x86)\Home Server Status folder.

Amazon’s Christmas Wish List 2011 – Something for Everyone

This week I visited Amazon’s Christmas Wish List 2011 event, where they showed off all the tech, gadgets, toys and other stuff they think will be big this Christmas. Read on to find out what they think you want from Santa this year.

UWHS - Amazon’s Christmas Wish List 2011

There were a number of different areas set up to look like open Amazon cardboard boxes, which was pretty cool. Each area was of a different shopping type, so for example Electronics, Toys & Games, Baby, Jewellery and so on. I’m not going to cover all of the areas, but there will be enough to show you just what to expect in December!

Some of the items on display are already available, and some are coming soon. All will be available for the Christmas period though, so it will be very interesting to see if Amazon got it right. Time will tell…… how many shopping days is it until Christmas?????

Oh, and since returning from the event I have already ordered a few of the items, but I’m not going to say what Smile

UWHS - Amazon’s Christmas Wish List 2011

Obviously this is the area that I was first drawn to. The biggest item Amazon was talking about was the Kindle, obviously! The Kindle is a fantastic device and I personally can recommend to anyone. They had the devices and sleeves on display, and there are literally thousands upon thousands of books (some even free) to choose from. There are two different Kindles – the Wi-Fi version for £111, and the 3G version for £152.

There was also an assortment of software and other electronic devices, such as cameras, photo frames, TVs and Blu-ray players.
