Just how realistic is Sleeping Dogs? We speak to Chris Thrall a former doorman for the Triads in Hong Kong

3

We recently reviewed the Square Enix game Sleeping Dogs, a gritty undercover cop action game where your character goes up against the Triads. We spoke with a former doorman of one of the Traids clubs in Hong Kong to ask his just how realistic the game actually is.

chris_thrall_author_pic_hr_2

Chris Thrall lives in the UK. At eighteen, he joined the Royal Marine Commandos. Following active service in the Northern Ireland Conflict and training in Arctic warfare and survival, he earned his parachutist’s ‘wings’ and went on to serve as part of a high-security detachment on board an aircraft carrier.

In 1995, he left the military and moved to Hong Kong to oversee the Asia-Pacific expansion of a successful network-marketing operation he’d built, part-time, while serving in the Armed Forces.

From there he ended up working for the Triads as a doorman at one of their clubs in Hong Kong, so he certainly has the credentials to comment on the realism and look of the game.

So here is the interview with Chris:

CDW: Hi Chris, thanks for taking the time to speak to us.

CHRIS THRALL: You are very welcome.

CDW: Tell us about your thoughts on Sleeping Dogs and how you first found out about it?

CHRIS THRALL: I first came across the game when I saw someone tweeting about it and so I looked it up on Google and then subsequently YouTube and I was quite blown away because it was like Déjà vu for me from my own experience in Hong Kong. It’s very well put together, obviously these guys have done their research and I was quite impressed.

CDW: You said it reminds you of your time in Hong Kong, tell us a little about that.

CHRIS THRALL: In a nutshell Andrew, I left the marines in this country to go and run a business in Hong Kong which I had started part time while I was in the forces. By the time I had served my notice and moved to Asia my business was flailing and subsequently collapsed, and so I was stuck on the other side of the world, and I took a bizarre series of jobs. As I did that I got addicted to a drug called Crystal Meth and as my life spiralled out of control, I pretty much burnt all the bridges available to me work wise so I ended up taking a job as a nightclub doorman at Club Nemo in the Wan Chai red-light district working for a club that was run by the 14K, one of Hong Kong’s notorious Triad syndicates.

CDW: You have had a lot of experience with the Triads, so does the game get the culture right, or does it either overplay or underplay it?

CHRIS THRALL: Well we have to remember that it is a game, and the idea of a game is to give people an experience they wouldn’t ordinarily get in their own lives unless they want to fly out to Hong Kong like I did and got a bit mad for a year and a half. It’s so uncannily realistic in parts, as I said it’s really déjà vu for me watching it, and the terminology the Triads use and the constant swearing and the issue of respect is something that features heavily in this game and that’s something that’s very true with the Triads.

CDW: Does the game capture a realistic look for Hong Kong from your personal experiences?

CHRIS THRALL: I don’t think it just looks right Andrew, it is so identical that it’s really uncanny. They have even got it down to minute details including how the walls of the buildings look and how rust drips down from the air conditioning units – it’s pretty full on!

CDW: Can you give us some examples of some of the experiences you had out in Hong Kong?

CHRIS THRALL: I love experiences myself, and I like to throw myself into the experience while I am there, and that’s what I did in Hong Kong. I trained myself in the language, I lived with a Chinese family for 8 or 9 months. I started buying marijuana from a group of Triads that hung out in a rundown ghetto in Hong Kong known as Chungking Mansions. When I started reading up on this ancient brotherhood that had existed for the last 500 years or so that had started from a humble philanthropic beginnings fighting against an oppressive Chinese dynasty and hiding out in the marshes – hence the expression “Brothers of the Marsh” I was just fascinated and completely reeled in by it, and to trace that forward and to see how they started from these philanthropic roots and somewhere along the line that had kind of got screwed into all out crime. These guys operate in Hong Kong under the radar of the law or even perhaps controlling the law – I was completely absorbed in it. There I was, working in a nightclub, I was the only westerner that worked for the Chinese, certainly the only one that worked for a Triad gang and I got to see quite a lot of experiences that were pretty beyond belief really.

One thing you see in the game is that there are two rival Triad groups – the Sun On Yee which I am assuming is modelled on the Sun Yee On which is an actual Triad group in Hong Kong and in the first scenes of the game you see them moving in on the territory of another Triad to extort protection money from people, and that’s something that goes on. One night we had a guy, he was a member from another gang, he was an elderly guy, he had come into the club. I don’t know what he was doing but whatever it was he had made the guys in my Triad lose face and my fellow doorman basically picked this guy up, dragged him out to the entrance, right where I was standing and they smashed him down on the ground and they set about kicking him in the head, so hard and fast it was just beyond what you would believe really. As the guy kind of gathered himself up and ran out the door, a list fell out of his pocket, the other Triads I worked with hadn’t seen it so I picked it up and it was a list of racehorses so obviously he had been passing off hookey racehorses in my club and he had suffered the wrath of the 14K because of it.

There was another time when I was minding my own business sat at the bar talking to the barman and the barman just stopped in mid-sentence. He froze and his eyes were locked on the door of our club and as I looked up, all the other Triads had done likewise, they had all put their drinks down. They were stood – it was like something from a film – all stood unmoving. Through the door had come about 20 or so members of the Sun Yee On actually which are based in the mainland town, Kowloon side is their territory in Hong Kong, so for them to be encroaching on another Triad’s territory, well you just don’t do it – it’s all about the issue of face in Hong Kong. I don’t know what had been done but obviously they were out to show a bit of force, and everything in the nightclub just froze and there was a standoff for what was probably only 20-25 seconds and I waiting for someone to start pulling out a chopping blade. Triads use to carry little leather wallets about the size of a pencil case and inside is where they kept their meat cleavers. And so I am stood there thinking “what’s going to happen next?”, and another thing that Triads use is a lot of secret terminology and hand signs. It’s not what they say, but it’s what’s said with their eyes and hands. Someone must have given a secret sign because this Sun Yee On Triad, literally all at the same time spun around and headed like a snake out the door.

CDW: You have also written a book about your experiences called Eating Smoke – tell us a little bit about that.

maverick_house_cover_hr

CHRIS THRALL: My book was number 2 best seller in Hong Kong for 7 months and it debuted in WH Smiths here in the UK Airports at number 6 and stayed there for quite a while.

CDW: What made you put your experiences down in a book?

CHRIS THRALL: Well really because I couldn’t quite believe, I obviously went through quite a lot myself, the drugs, I got very ill, I developed psychosis which is quite a fascinating story in itself, but also I just thought how many westerners had worked for the Hong Kong Triads? I had never heard of any. Who could put down the sorts of stories I am telling you Andrew in a book for others to experience? So one day I just started writing. I’m completely self-taught. I’ve only got GCSE English which I taught myself in the Marines. And I wrote, and I wrote, and I learnt how to edit, how to do punctuation and grammar, narrative and dialogue, and then out of that came the book Eating Smoke.

CDW: Thank you very much for time Chris.

CHRIS THRALL: Thank you Andrew.

Chris’s book is a very interesting read about his journey and experiences, and it’s one worth taking the time to read.

So as you can see, someone who has actually been in the world of the Triad’s believes that the game has the right look and feel, which says to me that the developers at United Front Games got it right!

Review of Square Enix’s new action game Sleeping Dogs

Recently we have been telling you all about Square Enix’s new game Sleeping Dogs – now it’s time for our review.

Sleeping Dogs is a gritty and visceral open-world cop drama set in the vibrant city of Hong Kong.

Developed by United Front Games in collaboration with the renowned Square Enix London Studios.

8368SleepingDogs_Screen_Conversation[2] 8370SleepingDogs_Screen_Hello_thumb1

Sleeping Dogs catapults players into the role of undercover cop Wei Shen, tasked with taking down one of the world’s most fearsome criminal organisations from the inside… the Hong Kong Triads. As players explore the bustling and crowded Hong Kong island, through its neon-lit side streets and sprawling street markets, an incredible story unfolds of loyalty and betrayal, where Wei begins to question his own motives as he is sucked in deeper than he could ever imagine.

8106Punch_Close_JL_01 8531SleepingDogs_Screen_Fish

Offering players an island packed with action, every street corner, market stall, harbour dock or city skyscraper can become an opportunity for intense shoot-outs, adrenaline-fuelled street races and intense, brutal martial arts combat. Featuring one of the most intuitive and imaginative combat systems, Sleeping Dogs empowers players to perform an extensive set of martial arts moves, singlehandedly taking on numerous opponents. Players perform bone-crunching kicks and combos, vicious counters and a cinematic set of environmental takedowns making use of countless real-world items from circular saws to phone booths, incinerators to refrigerator doors.

7355SD_Screenshot_Wei_Market_JL_01 8529SleepingDogs_Screen_Club

Tasks in the game include colleting protection money, fighting various people, shoot-outs, car chases, and much more. I don’t want to give too much away but the game really makes use of the open-world feature. I liked that the game I was playing was different to the game being played either side of me. I chose to steal a car and drive around until I found something I wanted to do, whereas you could do pretty much anything within the confines of the game.

 9125SD_J2_Costume_Screen3

The graphics, music and gameplay were excellent – I really found myself immersed in the game, and be warned, there are some pretty graphic scenes – I even found myself wincing at one point – but I wont say what it was, I will let you find out for yourself.

You can use objects as weapons, for example, in one scene I was fighting a few guys, and I picked one up, put him under a suspended engine and dropped it on him. Not a pleasant way to go!

8741SD_E3_Screen_spotlight 8742SD_E3_Screen_storm

There are a few famous actors and actresses who have leant their voices to the game. These include Tom Wilkinson, Lucy Liu, Edison Chen, Emma Stone, Will Yun Lee, Robin Shou, Terence Yin, Ron Yuan, Irene Tsu, James Lew and Parry Shen. You can learn more about the voice talent here.

7352SD_Screenshot_Wei_Bike_Chase_JL_01 7375SD_Screenshot_Wei_Boat_JL_02

Final Thoughts

I really love this game – the graphics are excellent and the sounds and music really draw you into the gritty dark world the Wei lives in.

I also really liked that it wasn’t just a case of following one path during the game – yes there are certain things you have to do as part of the game, but there are a lot of side missions you can do if you want, or not!

Sleeping Dogs is a single player game, there is no multiplayer option, but to be honest it doesn’t really need one and you can keep playing the game once you have finished it and choose a different path.

There is a really good mix of a number of different elements included in the game, from shooting, hand-to-hand combat, driving (including cars, motorbikes and speed boats) and more, so there certainly something for everyone.

If you like action games, then I cannot recommend Sleeping Dogs enough, this is certainly my game of the year so far!

Sleeping Dogs is available now for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PCs.

In Part One of the ISCSI Setup Series, I showed you how to set up an ISCSI target in QNAP’s TurboNAS 3.7.  In Part Two, I show you how to configure and use that target in Server 2012 Essentials.

Hardware Used

I have a QNAP TS-419 P II NAS unit connected via ethernet to my home network. The QNAP is running TurboNAS 3.7 and is using 8TB of drives in a RAID5 configuration. I also have an HP HPE490t Elite desktop, with a motherboard that supports virtualization. I have activated the virtualization option in the HP’s BIOS. Windows 7 and WIndows 8 Consumer Preview are both loaded in a dual-boot configuration.  Hyper-V is loaded on the Windows 8 OS and Server 2012 Essentials is loaded inside Hyper-V as a virtual machine.

Setup on Server 2012 Essentials

Get the settings charm to come up, right click on Settings and then click on Control Panel.

clip_image00226_thumb1

Choose System and Security.  Click on Administrative Tools.

clip_image00230_thumb1

Choose iSCSI Initiator.

Raspbmc for Raspberry Pi will work with MPEG-2 and VC-1 codecs

We just told you that you can now buy an MPEG-2 and VC-1 licence for the Raspberry Pi, and the developer of Raspbmc has said it will work with Raspbmc.

CDW---The-Beeb--30-Event-037_thumb1_[2]

This is what was just posted:

Will this work out of the box in Raspbmc?

Yes — after your purchase, you will be given line entries for config.txt. When you add this, XBMC’s omxplayer will start playing the codecs that you have paid for.

Does this mean Raspbmc will get PVR support?

Yes — Raspbmc will soon have PVR support

Are additional codecs coming?

I can’t comment on whether they’re coming, but if you check the VLLs, there’s more than meets the eye!

Check out the videos we made with Eben Upton Check out our unboxing of our Raspberry Pi

Have you ordered one? Let us know if you get yours and what you do with it.

MPEG-2 and VC-1 decode, H.264 encode, CEC support now available for the Rapsberry Pi

Good news for those wanting to use their Raspberry Pi’s for media playback, you can now get support for MPEG-2 and VC-1, plus more!

CDW---Unboxing-the-Raspberry-Pi-009_[1]

This is what Liz just posted on the Raspberry Pi blog:

If you’ve been following this website since we launched it last summer, you’ll probably be aware that we had to make some hard decisions about exactly what we could include on the Raspberry Pi if we were to meet our extremely low target price. One of the things that we had to regretfully dismiss as an option was an MPEG-2 decode licence for every unit. Providing that licence would have raised the price of every Raspberry Pi by roughly 10%, and we simply weren’t able to justify that when we held it up against the educational goals of the Foundation. Our initial expectation was that most of you would buy the Raspberry Pi for educational purposes, and that you wouldn’t mind that MPEG-2 wasn’t available. Our bad.

MPEG-2 and VC-1 decode

Thing is, a bunch of you went and bought the Raspberry Pi in February and immediately started using it as your primary media centre. And many, many of you have existing media libraries which are encoded using MPEG-2, and don’t fancy transcoding gigabites of stuff to H.264. You’ve been complaining about that. Vociferously.

We’ve spent some months working out how on earth to square this particular circle. A blanket licence for everybody would cost the Foundation money it simply doesn’t have, and not everybody with a Raspberry Pi would use that licence; an individual licence for an individual user to download and use with an individual machine is a surprisingly finickity thing to engineer. (This is why we’re very grateful to have Dom on board our engineering team, because he’s clever.) But that’s what we’ve done – so from today, you’ll be able to purchase an MPEG-2 decode licence which will be tied to your Raspberry Pi’s unique serial number. This will allow you to play MPEG-2 material from XBMC and omxplayer, which hasn’t been an available feature before now.

To purchase an MPEG-2 licence visit our (relaunched) store. And before you mention it in the comments, yes, stickers, t-shirts and other merchandise will be available, but not until we’ve built up a staff to handle it, which will take up a few months. Eben and I quickly realised earlier this year that if we keep gumming the envelopes and sticking on labels for this stuff ourselves, we will die from papercuts and boredom in very short order – and nothing else will get done because we’ll be very gluey.

We have also made a VC-1 licence available for purchase in the store. This is Microsoft’s video codec, and we don’t expect as many of you to require it as require MPEG-2, but there is a significant volume of material out there in this format which we thought it’d be nice to have the option to view on the Raspberry Pi.

You will receive your key by email within 72 hours of ordering. We haven’t been able to integrate key generation with the store website, so we will be generating them offline and sending them out automatically.

H.264 encode

Alongside MPEG-2 support (which you’ll have to pay for), we’re making H.264 encode available for free. The hardware has always been capable of supporting H.264 encode, but we were under the misapprehension that encode required an additional licence fee, so were waiting until the camera board release (which is still coming later in the year) before spending the money to enable it.

During the course of talking to the MPEG LA about the MPEG-2 licence, we discovered that the existing licence fee that is already baked into the cost of the Raspberry Pi actually covers both encode and decode – I tell you, this stuff is arcane – so we’ve enabled the relevant OpenMAX components by default in the latest firmware. It may take a while for someone to produce an encoder application which uses these components, but once they do you should be able to use the Pi as a standalone transcoder.

Check out what happened at the Q&A session with the Raspberry Pi Foundation

QNAP’s TurboNAS supports ISCSI, meaning that you can point a server at the QNAP’s RAID storage and use it over ethernet as if it is attached to the server.  This is particularly useful in scenarios where you have virtualized the server and want to use storage that is not attached to the virtual box.  Here, I walk you through setting up the ISCSI target on the QNAP and establishing a connection with Server 2012 Essentials Beta set up in a Hyper-V instance on Windows 8 Consumer Preview.  See this article for the Hyper-V setup instructions.  Ready?  Let’s go!

Configuration of the QNAP

We need to do some work to configure the QNAP to act as an ISCSI target.  The steps are activating ISCSI, creating the target, and setting up the server application to use the target.  We’ll cover the first two steps in this article.

First, log into the administrative panel of the QNAP.

Click on Disk Management and then ISCSI. Select Enable iSCSI Target Service. Click Apply.

Click OK as we’ll take care of that setting in a later step.

Click Target Management, OK to start the wizard. Select iSCSI Target with a mapped LUN. Click Next.
