Netatmo Debuts Urban Weather Station for IOS

Netatmo announced their Urban Weather Station for IOS today.  Read on for details.

Web-Med_Box

Netatmo today announced a weather station that works with IOS devices and is designed to give you feedback about the weather and environmental conditions in  your home.  First, some background on Netatmo:

ABOUT NETATMO
Netatmo manufactures the world’s first personal weather station for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
Netatmo was established in 2011 by Frederic Potter and Jean-Pierre Dumolard, both highly successful and experienced entrepreneurs in the technology space with companies such as WITHINGS or CIRPACK. Netatmo strives to bring consumers a better way of life through using connected devices technology for environment monitoring while maintaining a commitment to elegant design. Visit www.netatmo.com for more information.

And now some feedback on the Urban Weather Station:

Personal indoor/outdoor Weather Station and free App lets users monitor the quality of their micro and macro living environments, accurately tracking and monitoring both Weather and Air Quality

PARIS –  August 27 2012Netatmo, a company dedicated to designing products that monitor the weather and environment, unveils its Urban Weather Station, a new device specifically designed for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch that allows users to monitor indoor and outdoor environmental elements including temperature, humidity, air pressure, CO2 levels and more.

The Netatmo Weather Station quantifies personal environments like the home and office, and wirelessly transmits data through Wi-Fi to the Netatmo App, which features an intuitive, easy-to-read interface.

“Air quality and weather conditions are a daily concern for city residents around the globe,” said Fred Potter, CEO, Netatmo. “By integrating Air Quality sensors into an easy-to-use Personal Weather Station, specifically designed for iPhone, iPad & iPod touch, we’re able to help users improve their indoor wellness and adapt their outdoor activities – creating a better way of life for everyone.”

With this Wi-Fi connected Personal Weather Station, Netatmo also aims to create the largest Weather and Air Quality monitoring network ever established.
A key innovation in the station is its ability to evaluate indoor air confinement by measuring CO2 concentration. When C02 reaches an excessive level, the user is alerted directly on his or her iPad, iPhone or iPod touch and can take action like ventilating his or her home.

The Air Quality conditions reported by the Netatmo App also allow users to assess the best times for outdoor physical activity, when to commute versus drive to work and more – all instances where Air Quality is of the utmost importance.
In addition to receiving real-time notifications on Air Quality and Weather conditions, users have access to a lifetime online account, free of any subscriptions, where all station measurements and data are stored. Over time, users can access data history and review it using the Netatmo App.

On a much larger, more impactful scale, Netatmo allows users to contribute to its Urban Weather Program, creating a wider network for weather data monitoring and pooling to help meteorologists, environmental activists, scientists and people living in urban environments gain a better understanding of the city climate landscape.
The data collected from the Netatmo Community could possibly turn into a crucial resource for climate research, helping us all get a stronger connection to the world in which we live.

Other functions of the Urban Weather Station include a detailed seven-day forecast and a light indicator for reading CO2 levels. The Urban Weather Station can even detect sound to make sure average noise levels in the home remain at a healthy balance, a helpful feature for parents looking to protect their family from noise pollution.

The Netatmo Urban Weather Station comes with one indoor and one outdoor module to monitor each living environment.

The shell for both modules, constructed from a single piece of durable aluminum, features a smooth, clean design. The indoor and outdoor modules are powered by the included USB wall Adapter and 4 AAA batteries, respectively, and come packaged with a wall mount kit for outdoor installation.

Netatmo’s Urban Weather Station is now available for $179 at www.netatmo.com. The Netatmo App is available for free on the App Store.

If you are in the market for a weather station and have IOS devices, the $179 price is actually not bad…cruise on over to the Netatmo site and check it out.  For now, enjoy the product pictures!

Two-minute review of Jet Set Willy 360 for the Xbox

Back in the 80’s, my favourite game on the ZX Spectrum was Jet Set Willy. Now it’s been released for the Xbox 360, and here is our two-minute review.

jetsetwilly640x804_l

Last week we told you that it was coming, and yesterday I got my hands on it!

What is Jet Set Willy?

Jet Set Willy is a computer game originally written for the ZX Spectrum home computer. It was published in 1984 by Software Projects and ported to most home computers of the time. The game is a sequel to Manic Miner (1983), and is the second game in the immensely popular Miner Willy Series. It was a significant development in the platform game genre on the home micro. A tired Miner Willy has to tidy up all the items left around his house after a huge party.

With this done his housekeeper Maria will allow him access to his bedroom. Willy’s mansion was bought with the wealth obtained from his adventures in Manic Miner but much of it remains unexplored and it appears to be full of strange creatures, possibly a result of the previous (missing) owner’s experiments. Willy must explore the enormous mansion and its grounds (including a beach and a yacht) to fully tidy up the house so he can get some much-needed sleep. Jet Set Willy is a flip-screen platform game in which the player moves the protagonist, Willy, from room to room in his mansion collecting objects. The game is an early example of a nonlinear title since, unlike the screen-by-screen style of its prequel, the player can explore the mansion at will. Willy is controlled using only left, right and jump. He can climb stairs by walking into them (jumping through them to avoid them) and climb swinging ropes by pushing left or right depending on what direction the rope is swinging. The play area itself consists of 60 screens making up the mansion and its grounds and contains hazards (static killer objects), guardians (killer monsters which move along predetermined paths), various platforms and collectable objects. The collectable items glow to distinguish them from other items in the room. Willy loses a life if he touches an enemy or falls too far, and he is returned to the point at which he entered the room. This may lead to a game-ending situation in which Willy repeatedly falls from a height, losing all lives in succession. Music on the Spectrum version was Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata for the menu and If I Were a Rich Man during the game itself.

Who are Elite Systems Ltd?

From their website:

Incorporated in England in 1984, Elite was originally a leading developer and publisher of ground-breaking games for the Sinclair Spectrum and Commodore 64 home computer systems…

Today Elite is a highly-specialised developer AND publisher of game software products for handheld, mobile and wireless systems; providing mobile network operators and selected other partners around the globe with “the best names in mobile games”.

Final Thoughts

Wow, this really took my back to my childhood, and many MANY hours of playing Jet Set Willy on my trusty 48K ZX Spectrum.

It is a very good port onto the Xbox 360, in fact I would say it’s pretty much perfect. The game even plays inside an old fashioned TV (as you can see from the screen shot above). You control the game using the Xbox controller instead of a keyboard (obviously).

There are various options you can choose when playing the game, such as infinite lives, so no need to “poke” this game! Also, the various bugs from the original Spectrum game that needed “poking” have also been fixed.

I haven’t played JSW for a very long time, but it was like I had only played it yesterday. I found myself getting drawn back into Willy’s world and even remembering sequences to get through certain rooms (now that is scary!).

There is even a little history included in the menu options of the game to tell you all about the various bugs and issues, so it’s worth taking a moment to read them, and like me you will probably say “I remember that!”.

If you are a fan of Jet Set Willy, or if you are just a fan of retro games, then you have to get this game. Right, I’m going back in – I have to collect everything…..

Jet Set Willy 360 is available now from the Xbox Live Marketplace for 240 MS points. There is also a free trial you can download.

The S.T.R.I.K.E.7 has been designed to offer gamers unprecedented control over their gaming environment. through the detachable modular design, unique V.E.N.O.M. touch sensitive colour LCD touchscreen and host of programmable features.

The fully modular design allows gamers to detach sections of the S.T.R.I.K.E.7 keyboard and arrange as they see fit, even allowing the gamer to only use the sections of the keyboard vital to their game of choice.

Designed for the professional or competitive gamer, the S.T.R.I.K.E.7 is ideal for LAN tournaments, allowing gamers to only transport the sections of the keyboard they require. Should the gamer only wish to take the main keyboard section, then they will still have access to the all important ‘cursor key functionality’, thanks to the Fn key, which when held, allows the ‘WASD’ keys (The keys most natural to hand to the majority of gamers) to function as the cursor keys.

At £249.99, the S.T.R.I.K.E.7 isn’t cheap, although I believe a lot of hard-core gamers will be very interested in the various features it has to offer.

Having used it to play a few games it certainly adds to the entertainment. The keyboard felt quite natural to use and the ability to remove items from the keyboard, and even to relocate them to a different position is great.

And there are so many things you could do with the V.E.N.O.M. touch screen, the possibilities are endless.

I look forward to testing this out for a much longer period.

Hands-on preview of THQ’s Company of Heroes 2 at Gamescom 2012

Recently at Gamescon, I got to play two levels on THQ’s forthcoming game Company of Heroes 2, and I was very impressed!

3129COH2_LOGO_FINISH copy

It is 1941 and the beginning of what will become the most brutal conflict of World War II, as Germany launches a full-scale invasion of the frozen tundra of the Soviet Union which would result in over 14 million military casualties. Take command of the iconic Soviet Red Army in brutal frontline warfare to free Mother Russia from the invading Nazis. Your strategic skills and tactical expertise hold the power to tip the very balance of this conflict in the sequel to the critically acclaimed and multi award-winning Company of Heroes. Engage in visceral tactical combat that will define you as a military leader and challenge you to wield the might of the Soviet Empire as you smash your way to Berlin.

7198CompanyofHeroes2_Announcement 7276CompanyofHeroes2_Screenshot_Barrage

As a true sequel to Company of Heroes, this game moves the battle away from the common Western Front focus of World War II and refocuses on some of history’s most brutal and devastating conflicts on the Eastern Front, challenging players to take command of the iconic Red Army and repel the Nazi invaders from the very gates of Moscow.

7277CompanyofHeroes2_Screenshot_Icycrossing 7295CompanyofHeroes2_ColdTech_FragileIce

Company of Heroes 2 utilizes Relic Entertainment’s state of the art proprietary Essence 3.0 Engine to bring new technological advancements to the strategy genre in the form of innovative Dynamic Battle Tactics, increased graphical fidelity and new environmental destruction, ultimately putting the player in control with new Commander Abilities.

7296CompanyofHeroes2_ColdTech_Hypothermia 7297CompanyofHeroes2_ColdTech_KatyushaBarrage

We were among a small group of people who were the first in the world to actually play it, so it was quite an honour.

7298CompanyofHeroes2_ColdTech_Mortar&DeepSnow 7299CompanyofHeroes2_ColdTech_SiberianSnipers

The new rendering engine means that there is both better animation but also means that there is lower system spec requirements.

The game looked really good, and the Alpha code we were playing was only running on DX9, I can’t wait to see it running on DX11 when the game is released! Additional detail will include track deformation in the snow, and lots more!

There is a high level of environment destruction in the game – basically if it exists in the world, it can be destroyed, burnt down, smash a tank through it and more.

7326CompanyofHeroes2_Online_AirSupport 7327CompanyofHeroes2_Online_CityCombat

THQ have taken the time to live record every single weapon used in the game – so no stock audio effects here. They recorded audio of single shots, burst shots, being fire right next to the recorder and even from a mile away, so it really adds an authentic sound to the gameplay.

There are a number of new features in the game, including a line of sight featured called True Sight. In most games, your character has a “bubble” of sight around him and so he can see things, including what’s behind a wall if he walks up to it. With True Sight your view changes dynamically, so for example, if you drive up to a wall and you don’t have any troops the other side of the wall you won’t be able to see what’s beyond it. Also, if you set fire to a building, the smoke could blow in front of your troops stopping you from seeing properly, and you will have to wait until the smoke clears before being able to see what’s there. This makes the gameplay more interesting and means you have to think, and play, more strategically.

There is also a dynamic weather system called ColdTech. As weather played an important roll in the Eastern Front, for example, in the Winter of 1941, the weather reached –41 degrees, which was cold enough to freeze fuel in vehicle fuel lines. Weather is effectively a “third player” in Company of Heroes 2. There are blizzard conditions in the game, and you will have to keep your men warm or they will get colder and colder and eventually get hyperthermia and die. There is also dynamic snow, with the ability to layer on and remove snow as needed for the level. The snow in this game actually has depth – for example running through deeper snow will slow down your troop movement. You can even use snow for cover, and melt or destroy snow to get at your enemies.

There is also ice which has different textures. Vehicles on the ice will actually slip and slide on the ice, and you can even crack or destroy the ice as needed. The heavier the vehicle the more damage is inflicted about the ice. For example, if you drive a tank across some ice, you will actually see the ice cracking around the tank! The more pressure you put on the ice, the more likely it will break, so be careful! Ice can also refreeze – so if it is really cold the river will freeze and the cracked ice will refreeze.

We got to play two missions in the game, lasting about 90 minutes. We got to see two very different maps and thus two different ways of playing the game. The graphics and sounds were fantastic, and the ColdTech weather system really makes it a different game. I figured I could just move a large group of my men across the map and ignore the cold – that was a big mistake – only 2 men actually got to where I sent them, and they were almost dead!

You really do have to think strategically in this game – but not to the detriment of the gameplay. I found the game easy to control once I got the hang of it.

I was really impressed with Company of Heroes 2, and in fact, I wanted to play more. I guess I will just have to wait until nearer the release date, and I can’t wait to see how much difference playing on DX11 will be, because even on DX9 the game looked fantastic.

Company of Heroes 2 is scheduled to be available for PC in early 2013. For more information check www.companyofheroes.com . This is definitely on my must have games list for 2013!
