A Visit to PLAY EXPO in Manchester

Last weekend saw PLAY EXPO return to Manchester for the 3rd time and we were there to take it all in.

This is how PLAY EXPO was described:

“Five themed zones bringing you the best in modern games, classic games, tournaments, Cosplay and Film/ TV. Add in game previews,  special guests and talks, photoshoots, Indie games, card and board games, movie props, YouTubers, celebrity signings and photo-shoots, plus more arcade and pinball than anywhere else in the UK!”

Event City is a large area, and PLAY EXPO filled it’s chosen hall to the brim with lots to see and do. We walked around the show for the day, and here are some of our highlights.

Using the Recreated ZX Spectrum

You can use the Spectrum to play games or as a Bluetooth keyboard, or both!

Playing Spectrum games via the App

There is a Recreated ZX Spectrum app that you can download onto iOS (and Android). The app itself is free, but most of the games need a small fee to unlock them.

The app has a nice swipe feature enabling you quickly and easily work through the games to see what there is to play and then to choose and play.

Playing Spectrum games via the Website

You can also play games via the Recreated ZX Spectrum website. These are free to play but you will need an Internet connection to get it to work. You can scroll through the lists of games and choose one.

Obviously my first choice was Jet Set Willy!

At the time of writing this review there is a problem with sound via the website and so there isn’t any sound on any game. Elite are aware of the problem and are working on it.

Using as a Bluetooth Keyboard

If you want to use the Spectrum as a Bluetooth keyboard you need to go through a series of steps to unlock it, which is done via the app.

Final Thoughts

As someone who grew up playing on the ZX Spectrum in the early 80’s, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the Recreated ZX Spectrum. It looks and feels exactly like the Spectrum I had over 30 years ago, even down to the rubber keys!

Setting up the Spectrum was easy – you just pop some batteries in, pair to the device you want to use and that’s it. The battery lasts for a considerable amount of time and there is also a USB cable provided too!

I did want to use it as a Bluetooth keyboard, so I had to go through the whole process of unlocking it – I’m still not 100% sure why it couldn’t have come unlocked, although the instructions to unlock it are very clear.

The games are exactly as I remembered them, although without the very long loading times and the fear that right at the end of the loading sequence something would go wrong because the tape may have been a little chewed. I still laugh today when I hear people complaining about loading times on the latest AAA console game. Believe me, they have never had it so good!

All in all the Recreated ZX Spectrum is a great piece of kit, you can play all your favourite Spectrum games on it, and even use it as a keyboard.

Elite also plan on improving and adding to the Spectrum features with software and firmware updates which will be as simple as visiting a website to install.

My only negative point is the cost, at £99.95 it’s rather expensive for a Bluetooth keyboard and if you want to play all the games you either have to pay for them separately in the app or have a constant Internet connection to play them for free. If that doesn’t bother you then the Recreated ZX Spectrum is a great additional to your collection.

You can learn more and order the Recreated ZX Spectrum from the Elite website.

Review: Seagate Game Drive for Xbox

if you want to expand the storage of your Xbox One or Xbox 360, you might want to read our review of the Seagate Game Drive for Xbox.

CDW Review - Seagate Game Drive for Xbox - 10

With today’s game installs averaging 35-50GB, space on the console to support a robust library of Xbox games becomes highly valued. With the Seagate Game Drive for Xbox, you will no longer need to delete games to make more room on the console’s library. The Seagate Game Drive for Xbox is a USB 3.0 connected drive with a green top-case and black body, embossed with both the Xbox and Seagate logos. The compact and portable Game Drive for Xbox enables the capability to take your catalogue of downloaded games and achievements for continued game play on any Xbox One or Xbox 360 console.

What’s in the Box?

The box contains the Game Drive, a quick start guide and a USB cable.

Final Thoughts

The drive itself is green, Xbox green to be precise and has the Xbox logo stamped on the top of the box. So unlike the WD My Passport X for Xbox One which we reviewed a few months ago, this one is a completely official and branded drive (not that it really makes a difference to the drive, we are just saying).

As with any external drive you want to use with your Xbox One, you just plug it in and the Xbox immediately recognises it and asks if you want it formatted and named. A few moments later the drive is ready to use – it really is that simple and quick.

Moving games from your internal Xbox drive to the Game Drive is simple, with the Xbox taking care of everything for you.

You can also connect it up to your Xbox 360 as well, although the performance is not quite as fast as the Xbox 360 uses USB 2.0 compared to USB 3.0 on the Xbox One.

I found the drive performed really well and seemed very quick to use, along with being pretty much silent.

The drive itself is a rebranded Seagate drive so if you were not bothered about the outer plastic being green and having the Xbox logo stamped on it then you could get the same drive a little bit cheaper, but I think it looks pretty cool sitting there next to my Xbox, so I’m happy!

If you want to expand your Xbox One (or Xbox 360) storage, and let’s be honest, you will want to, and more importantly need it, then the Seagate Game Drive for Xbox is a great addition – you won’t be disappointed.

The Seagate Game Drive for Xbox retails at £95.99, and you can learn more from the Seagate website.

Larian Studios’ multi-award winning RPG is nearing release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Having revealed the online and offline cooperative features with its Co-Op Trailer, today’s Combat Trailer introduces a new generation to the combat of Divinity: Original Sin – Enhanced Edition. Discover how turn based combat performs effortlessly on game pads thanks to the intuitive control system and UI designed for consoles.  The combat in Divinity: Original Sin – Enhanced Edition, is both torturously tactical, or bright and breezy! It just depends on your play style and the level of difficulty you picked. The Enhanced Edition comes with three new difficulty modes: Honor, Tactician, and Explorer, each offering a new, tailor-made experience honing on different play styles.

Take advantage of crowd control spells such as petrify, charm, and freeze – required in the harder difficulty settings, or simply ignite, enflame, poison, and electrify your way through the world – zapping water under-foot to shock, or engulfing the enemy in flames by igniting a near-by oil barrel.  It’s all about using the skills at your party’s disposal to supplement each of their player defined roles. Although featuring 12 classes (including a new class, the Inquisitor), Divinity: Original Sin – Enhanced Edition is really classless. You can mix and match as you develop your characters, chaining abilities and taking advantage of environmental aspects such as water, ice, oil on the floor, and steam clouds, things like that.

Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition launches on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on 27th October.

Review: Destiny: The Taken King

I’m fairly sure everyone has their own, well-formed opinion of Destiny by now, it must’ve set a record somewhere for being the most hated game you love of all time. With the introduction of the changes made with the year 2.0 update, along with this new expansion, ‘The Taken King’, will Destiny finally reward the grind-iest of grinders, or will you still be left unsatisfied once the king is slain?

The Taken King costs quite a lot of money, this is an inescapable fact that’ll no doubt sway your decision to purchase it in some way or another, the question then being, is it worth it? For the hardcore Destiny fans that’ve been playing since the days of the almighty quest for the Gjallahorn, then yes undoubtedly so. Within The Taken King, you’ll get access to a good few hours of new story content, complete with a semi-coherent, if not slightly predictable plot, several new strikes, enemies, classes, PvP offerings and of course a new raid on top of the many other things the year 2.0 update brought. Amongst all the new content is also the ‘Dreadnaught’ a new hub to freely roam about in, collecting hidden fragments, completing quests and uncovering its many secrets, of which there are plenty I might add.

Dreadnaught_Heroic_01-1
New gun models, gear and locations lurk around every corner

If, like many others, myself included, you loved to play Destiny but couldn’t quite get past the weekly limitations nor the raid shaped wall halting your progression, things are looking up. The looting system has been revamped in that you always feel as though you’re progressing now. Engram drop rates have been significantly increased; due to Master Rahool being significantly less stingy, you can often find better gear from the most unlikely enemies. The new levelling system means that you’ll hit the new cap (level 40) rather quickly just by completing quests and shooting a lot of aliens. The end-game tasks still rely upon your light level, but that number is now an average of all the defensive and offensive pieces of gear you have equipped, meaning that it’s easier to raise; and fortunately meaning that one piece of subpar equipment isn’t going to hinder you too much.

Without attempting the raid, the highest light level you’ll hit will be in the upper 290’s, I can manage to scrape myself up to 297 if I put on all my highest gear, but seeing as the recommended level for the raid is 290, it shouldn’t be too much of an effort to get some decent kit. The new infusion system helps with this too, as you can now dismantle higher rated gear into your favourite legendries or exotics to bring their stats up. It’s great not to be forced into using something you don’t particularly enjoy using and instead make the things you do like, better and more capable.

With The Taken King, a lot of the game feels fresher and more modern. The quest tracker will help point the way to what you next want to accomplish, the streamlining of incredibly specific upgrade items into just a few, is a welcome change, and the addition of weapon foundries (brands) gives each type a unique feel. The latter being especially important due to all the new loot that’s now been incorporated in, new gun models, firing sounds and even optical sights have been added in for more variety.

NPC_Cayde-6_02
Cayde-6 is fantastic due to Mal Reynolds, I mean Nathan Fillion…

Now back in the day, I loved my Suros Regime as much as the next assault rifle dependant guardian, but it never really felt exotic, it was just a good ol’ reliable rough and tumble assault weapon. Here in The Taken King, one of my first exotic drops was the Supercell, and it’s a world apart. When you’re not tryharding your pants off, the Zhalo Supercell is probably some of the most fun I’ve ever had on destiny. A primary assault rifle featuring potentially chaining arc damage, it goes without saying that all I did for the first few hours of getting it, was run about screaming ‘unlimited power’ whenever it occurred. And this is only the start, there are weapons hidden and tucked away that feel genuinely exotic, and indeed worthy of their ‘can only equip one at a time’ limitations.

Along with the new story, strikes and raid come a new-ish enemy faction too. Called the ‘Taken’ they’re at first glance, just a simple palette swap of the games’ regular enemies such as Captains, Goblins, Centurions etc. But they all require different tactics to fight due to their different abilities, Goblins can tether to their allies, sacrificing their offensive capabilities in turn for making their new buddy immune to damage. Captains will often bum rush you whilst firing an ominously slow ball of irritation that’ll temporarily blind you if you get hit by it. Other lower tiered enemies can split themselves multiple times, some can teleport, some go invisible, and the list goes on. Fortunately, there’s also an extra subclass for each character to level up and fulfil their lacking role. Titans can now cause ranged damage with fiery hammers of death, Warlock’s get to chain lightning from their fingertips and Hunter’s get an incredibly useful bow and arrow to supress groups of enemies for their teammates.

Of course, things are rarely perfect and there are still things, both old and new that are unfortunately yet to be fixed. Despite Nathan Fillion bringing a fantastic performance out of Cayde-6 and Nolan North’s efforts with our floaty little ghost friend, the story still feels like an afterthought. This might not be such a problem for some, but with all the lore that Bungie have brought in with the Grimoire cards you earn and discover over the course of the game, you still can’t view them in-game for some reason. If there were a section on the menu where I could read up about whatever event just occurred then I would, I’m not going to open up a web browser or an app on my phone to do that, it’s just not going to happen for me, or a majority of the community for that matter.

Dreadnaught_Heroic_02
Suros still know how to make an assault rifle, don’t worry

Another fault lies with the ever thorny issue of matchmaking for the high level events. I appreciate that the raids themselves require a group of communitive people, but once again, that can often mean leaving the game to find like-minded individuals run by fan sites. Some form of area in the game where people can meet up, specifically for raids, and agree to tackle such a task could work just as well without bringing in matchmaking. At level 297, I can pretty much accomplish most of what the game can throw at me right now. On my own, I’ve managed many a foray into the Court of Oryx, I can brush past the Daily Heroic Story and I’ve completed the inordinately long quest line to get Nightfall tier rewards from the crucible. However they inevitably revolve around winning games, and regardless of what performance I play, that relies upon a good team of random people to succeed. What I’d like to see in the future, is something akin to a raid, but just for singleplayer folks. Something that can grant high tiered rewards, but don’t require you having several friends playing the same game, with the same kind of gear level at the same time, that all want to do the same thing for several hours at a time.

I enjoy Destiny, in fact I’ve always enjoyed it at its core, the superb gunplay, the never-ending hunt for more loot, the rich, deeply buried lore and the community have always been mainstays. The changes and additions made with The Taken King extend it far beyond what it once was, into a pretty complete experience. It is quite steeply priced, and for some reason, the older ‘year one’ activities don’t have upgraded loot drops on completion yet, I do so miss the Prison of Elders for example, but assuming these and some other things can be fixed and updated, the future is strong for Destiny.

FINAL FANTASY XIV Patch 3.1

1

In the wake of the Warrior of Light’s return from Azys Lla, the nation of Ishgard trembled, the faith of her people shaken to its very core.

For a thousand years had they fought and died, certain of the justice of their cause, only to be told that their holy war was born of blood and betrayal. What then, for those brave men and women, thus stripped of their righteousness, but to despair? To deny the truth and decry its speakers? And what then for those whom they defamed but to hope on? To have faith in a brighter tomorrow?

A tomorrow in which man and dragon might live together in harmony─then as distant as the very stars in the heavens…

With advances in the usage of airships and amidst the arrival of the so-called “Great Sky Age,” there are those who ride their own airships through the skies seeking hidden lands and mystery. They are known as “sky pirates.”

There has been a rumour spreading amongst the sky pirates of a ghost ship wandering across the skies – an ark filled with evil power that was created long ago by mages to run from cataclysm.
