ArenaNet, publisher and developer Guild Wars, today launched Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns. The highly anticipated expansion to Guild Wars 2 is now live and available at digital and retail stores across Europe and North America.
The expansion to the PC massively multiplayer online game (MMO) comes less than three months after ArenaNet announced that the core Guild Wars 2 game is available to play for free, a move that has significantly grown the game’s player community. To highlight that growth, ArenaNet also released an infographic today announcing that Guild Wars 2 has reached more than 7 million player accounts globally.
“This has been a memorable year for ArenaNet and our Guild Wars 2 player community,” said Mike O’Brien, co-founder and president of ArenaNet. “We energised our fans in January with the announcement of Heart of Thorns as the first expansion to Guild Wars 2, and we’ve seen steady growth in our player base ever since. Our community is widely recognised as one of the best and friendliest in MMOs many of our veteran players organised in starter zones to welcome new players the weekend we made the core Guild Wars 2 game free. We’re eager to see how our fast growing community continues to flourish, and we hope they’re eager to embrace where their Guild Wars 2 journey takes them next in Heart of Thorns.”
Heart of Thorns continues the Guild Wars 2 journey for players with the next chapter in their Personal Story saga, where armies in the game world led by players go deep into the heart of the Maguuma jungle to take on a sinister elder dragon. It also brings new game modes, features and game play improvements that touch on nearly every aspect of the game. There is an all-new profession called the revenant along with elite specialisations that add new weapons and skills to every existing profession in the game.
There is brand new competitive game content with an all new PvP mode called Stronghold and the massive new Desert Borderlands map for the game’s epic WvW warfare mode. Heart of Thorns also sets a strong foundation for endgame MMO content. Masteries introduce new ways to pursue skills and progress characters. Raids and new Fractal dungeons deliver extremely challenging group content. There are new ways for players to earn Legendary rewards. For competitive players, there are in-game systems and leaderboards such as PvP Leagues and Guild Challenger Leagues that pave the way for players to develop skills to compete at an elite level.
Guitar Hero is back, has today announced the pop culture phenomenon that captured the hearts of 40 million players across the globe is officially available at retail stores nationwide with the completely reinvented Guitar Hero Live. Developed by FreeStyleGames, the studio behind DJ Hero and DJ Hero 2, Guitar Hero Live introduces a radically improved guitar controller, hundreds of songs and two brand new ways to play: GH Live, a first-person point of view where you play in front of a real crowd that reacts to how you perform, and GHTV, the world’s first playable music video network.
The Guitar Hero Live UK launch saw ultimate rock girl Laura Whitmore create an image inspired by iconic rock and roll behaviour as she hurled a TV out of a first-floor window at London’s Truman Brewery. She was joined by fellow celebrity Guitar Hero fan Danny Jones, who also had a go at creating his own rockstar moment before getting to grips with one of the year’s most anticipated games.
“Guitar Hero is one of the most beloved gaming franchises of all time, and now, after years of research and development, it’s back, totally reinvented, and better than ever with Guitar Hero Live,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. “The experience of being up on stage, in first person, playing in front of a live crowd that responds to your performance in real time, will put your heart in your throat. And GHTV, which lets you play along to your favourite music videos will keep the game fresh with a continuous stream of new content. We’ve poured our hearts and souls into Guitar Hero Live and we can’t wait for fans to get their hands on it. It’s going to be awesome.”
Activision and FreeStyleGames are also bringing the Guitar Hero Live experience to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch at launch and Apple TV later this year. The mobile version of the game is available as a bundle with a guitar controller that works across Apple devices, letting fans live out the rockstar experience anytime, anywhere.
Each mode of the game delivers a new take on the music game genre. An unparalleled leap in rockstar realism, GH Live is a live-action experience that delivers the full emotional roller coaster of being on stage, with players performing in a real band, in front of real crowds, who react in real time to how well or poorly you play. Shot live with musicians performing in front of real crowds, GH Live delivers the raw excitement and stage fright that comes with owning the stage in front of thousands of cheering – or jeering – fans.
GHTV is a revolutionary new way to play Guitar Hero. The 24-hour playable music video network lets fans play along to a continually-updated collection of official videos, from the newest releases to favourite hits. GHTV is a living, breathing platform that will launch with hundreds of songs and will continue to grow, with new songs added weekly, serving as an ever-expanding source for music discovery while bringing the party atmosphere back to the living room. In GHTV, fans can play along with different channels of music or choose to play one of hundreds of songs on demand. Fans can win fame playing solo or with their friends in local head-to-head multiplayer, and online against other players trying to master the same song. And simply by plugging in a USB mic, players can sing along to the music in both GH Live and GHTV with lyrics displayed on screen.
GHTV also includes Premium Shows, which highlight premium playable content such as live concert footage, debut music videos in the platform and more. Starting today, fans can experience the GHTV premiere of the Avenged Sevenfold Premium Show, including playable concert footage recorded at the band’s recent headlining performance at England’s venerable Download Festival. Players will also be awarded with a custom Avenged Sevenfold themed note highway and player card. Activision is also giving fans a chance to get in the game by submitting clips of themselves performing Ed Sheeran’s hit song “Sing” through the musical.ly app, with winners being featured in a world premiere music video that will be playable in the game.
Call of Duty: Black Ops III, in Campaign mode, you must navigate the hot spots of a new Cold War to find your missing brothers. Players can play the campaign cooperatively or solo and are now always connected to the intelligence grid and their fellow operatives during battle.
Multiplayer features a new momentum-based chained movement system, allowing players to fluidly move through the environment with finesse, using controlled thrust jumps, slides, and mantling. Black Ops III multiplayer also introduces the new Specialist character system, which allows players to master 9 characters’ battle-hardened weapons and abilities through a challenge-based unlock progression system. No Treyarch title would be complete without its signature Zombies offering. “Shadows of Evil” has its own distinct storyline right out of the box, set in the fictional 1940s Morg City, where four particularly troubled individuals – the femme fatale, the magician, the detective, and the boxer – star in this film-noir inspired horror story.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is scheduled to release on 6th November on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. An Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 version will also be released on that day, although they’ll only offer online multiplayer and zombies game modes.

After regaining their once spectacular form over the last few years, Konami and PES Production’s 2016 entry into the football genre promises to be their best yet. Touting new and improved mechanics, as is custom on a yearly release cycle, can Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 hold off the ever looming FIFA entry?
Recreating the beautiful game has always been the top priority over at the Pro Evo camp, let EA have their licences and flashy menus, with PES, it’s all about the gameplay. And to be fair, it’s never been so good. All the talk regarding the new ‘advanced collision system’ that seems very reminiscent of the usual buzz words and hype surrounding a games release into the wild, is actually true. Amongst many other improvements, you can genuinely feel this coming into play. Darty and nippy wingers will soon run into trouble against stocky defenders they come up against, whilst strong, stout attackers, more realistically, will have a greater advantage when it comes to jostling and winning headers.
New animations add to the realism
The physicality of the game is difficult to pinpoint onto one aspect, instead you’ll feel it in everything you do. Momentum and weight come into play in almost all facets, whether it be attempting a potentially risqué tackle, or just scurrying through sluggish defenders. The AI feels stronger this year too, instead of the nearest opposing player just rushing straight at you and swiping the ball away, they’ll play more conservatively and wait for opportunities to pounce. It can lead to a more thoughtful style of play, giving you time to think and plan your actions, instead of just instantly sprinting out or passing as soon as someone comes near.
One of the largest improvements this year over the previous outing is the sheer responsiveness and fluidity of the controls. This of course helps to tie in excellently with the more physics based approach this time around. It not only makes individual players feel more unique, but also shows off their real life talents too, controlling players like Tevez or Aguero can feel a world apart from others. Of course everything that made last year’s PES so entertaining on the pitch makes a welcome return too, the realistic feel of how counter play can be so devastating to either side means one mistake can easily change the outcome. This is without doubt, the closest you’ll get to the real experience in terms of drama and flair.
A slew of additions help to increase the realism too. Dynamic weather changes and new goalkeeper personalities mean surprises are bound to happen; along with new and updated animations making their appearance, hopefully it’ll be less likely for repetition to set in too quickly. In fact the only thing that’s such a far cry from reality, are the referees’ inattentiveness to players’ flagrant disregard for another’s wellbeing. I mean you can seriously afflict some atrocities on this without the man in black giving two monkeys. It’s an odd choice, but perhaps it’s yet another thing tied into the physics-orientated style of the game.
Dynamic weather can change the pace mid-game
In terms of modes on offer, there are the usual quick matches, tournaments, training and online offerings to peruse. Yet these might not see much action compared to the improved Master League career mode and of course, myClub (PES’s version of FIFA’s Ultimate Team). Master League has, thankfully, had more than just a quick lick of paint applied to it. It not only looks much more modern and streamlined, but also more closely resembles a football management game due to its calendared appearance. It might still not quite measure up to FIFA’s career mode, but little touches here and there make strong cases to give it a try. The game will generally make a large fuss about signing high profile players to your team by triggering press conference cutscenes too, making grabbing that big named star feel just that little bit more special. A nice little touch is that those star signings will generate more income from fans too, such as selling more shirts with their favourite player’s name emblazoned on the rear. The transfer system seems a bit more intuitive and rational than before, but sadly you still can’t negotiate personally with the player.
Pro Evo’s ‘myClub’ could well be quite the time sink for a lot of players too, particularly those who’ve dabbled in FUT. Expanding on last year’s debut, there’ve been some beneficial tweaks and added polish without managing to flip it on its head. You still can’t transfer players for example, but people in your roster can now level up, (slowly) increasing their stats and experience; overall giving it a solid RPG-lite feeling of progression. Players you don’t want, or have no real need for, can be converted into a trainer which will remove them, but in return will give a stat boost to another player you choose. It’s a decent system complete with rarity colours and the hunt for better players driving you forwards; however people who wish to really succeed will undoubtedly have to consider spending extra (real life) currency here.
Honestly don’t even bother appealing for a free kick, it’s not happening
As far as the game’s presentation goes, it can be a bit of a mixed bag. Textures and fidelity on things like clothing and certain players’ faces not only look fantastic, but realistic too, as do the incredible amount of animations in the game. The physical collisions between players and the ball look great and believable, especially when in slow motion where you can see each individual contact point. A lot of the menus have been spruced up to give a more modern (and competing) feel, with the Master League receiving a lot of love too. However, the crowds can look a little too generic at times despite how pronounced their effect can be in terms of sound. The commentary track has its highs and lows too, with inane tap-ins that bear no consequence on the outcome of the game receiving the same excitable admiration as spectacular 89 minute volleys that tie up the game.
On this generation of consoles at least, PES Productions have proved once again that it’s substance over style that should matter most; that the gameplay itself has unquestionably done more than enough to warrant a recommendation. The lack of licences isn’t particularly a deal breaker anymore due to the ability to download custom strips and even managers, and the effort put into modernising the atypical Konami menus is welcomed too. FIFA might still look better in certain areas, but PES feels better where it matters most, on the pitch.
Coming exclusively to Wii U in Europe on 20th November, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash offers brand new fun for court competitors, including the ability to team up with amiibo. Supported amiibo can be your partner in online doubles matches, or join you to battle strong computer-controlled opponents in the offline Knockout Challenge mode. The more matches your amiibo plays, the more experience it’ll gain, becoming a uniquely powerful team-mate as its abilities increase over time.
New faces like Rosalina also hit the courts, along with returning characters like Luigi, Waluigi, Boo and more for tennis with a distinct Mushroom Kingdom twist. On top of standard shots like topspin, lobs, slices and more, the new Ultra Smash move sees characters leap high into the air and smash the ball down to devastating effect. Adept tennis tacticians can also gain the advantage by hitting the right shot while standing in the coloured Chance Areas that occasionally appear, unleashing super-strong smashes or bamboozling slices to flummox adversaries on the other side of the net.
Using a combination of controllers including the Wii U GamePad, Wii Remote, Wii U Pro Controller and Classic Controller Pro, up to four players can get together in supported modes for lively tennis battles. And with a choice of camera angles, there’ll be no more defeats blamed on having to play on the far side of the court – the TV and GamePad screen can each show a different end of the court, so both teams will always have the perfect view.
Gameplay modes offer plenty of opportunities for tennis tomfoolery:
Knockout Challenge: Tense tiebreak matches against increasingly difficult computer-controlled opponents await in this single-player mode. If the going gets too tough, you can call in a supported amiibo as your doubles partner.
Mega Battle: Your character grows to gigantic proportions after grabbing a Mega Mushroom, dominating the court with their increased power and range. When rivals on both sides of the net are giant-sized, anything can happen!
Classic Tennis: For those who prefer their tennis a little more traditional, Classic Tennis offers two variations: Standard mode features Chance Shots and Jump Shots but no Mega Mushrooms, while Simple puts competitors between the tramlines with no Chance Shots or power-ups – a real test of tennis prowess.
Online multiplayer: Go up against distant adversaries from all over the world in competitive ranked play in either Mega Battle or Classic Tennis modes, or quickly jump into more casual matches. Two players on the same console can team up to take on all-comers, or a supported amiibo can join you on as your doubles partner on the online courts.
As a limited launch offer, anyone who purchases Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash from Nintendo eShop in its first four weeks on sale will receive a download code for the Nintendo 64 game Mario Tennis on Wii U Virtual Console. This N64 title not only kick-started Mario’s tennis career, it also introduced the world to Waluigi for the very first time.
Compete to see who’s the top seed in your household, train up a compatible amiibo as a powerful doubles partner and match up against online opponents in Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, coming to Wii U in Europe on November 20th. Two colourful new controller designs – Wii Remote Plus Toad and Wii Remote Plus Bowser – will also be available on the same day.

Today, Ubisoft announced that Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is now becoming available across retailers worldwide on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate will be available to purchase in the UK on Friday, 23rd October.
Set in London during the height of the Industrial Revolution, players will step into the shoes of twin Master Assassins, Jacob and Evie Frye. Fighting to liberate London, Jacob and Evie help define the birth of organised crime in an adventure filled with action, intrigue and brutal combat.
Led by Ubisoft Quebec, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate introduces an array of new weapons and skills. Along with Jacob’s brawn and Evie’s stealth, players use a new arsenal of weapons, including the kukri knife, brass knuckles and cane sword in brutal combat, and utilise the brand new rope launcher to scale buildings in seconds or take enemies by surprise.
With the Season Pass included in the Gold Edition of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, players can delve deeper into London in 1868 and beyond with new missions, including The Last Maharaja, A Long Night, Streets of London with new gear, weapons, outfits, and a permanent XP boost. Players brave enough will visit London in 1888 at the height of the Jack the Ripper killings to take-on the world’s most infamous serial killer in a deadly game of cat and mouse.
Additionally, PlayStation 4 players will be challenged to investigate The Dreadful Crimes, a series of odd murders taking place in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate’s Victorian London. These ten exclusive missions are directly inspired by the Penny Dreadful stories, which were weekly pocket novels very popular amongst the working class in 19th century London that narrated fictitious and sensational crime stories. Players will find clues and question multiple witnesses as they progress through stories based on the works of Victorian detective writers.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate players worldwide will also receive two free outfits in November; Evie’s shocking steampunk-inspired “Dr. Daniel’s Garments” outfit and Jacob’s “The Creature’s Rags” outfit, a patchwork getup reminiscent of Dr. Frankenstein’s infamous Creature to customise their experience in London.
The Windows PC version of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate will be available worldwide on 19th November.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate players can unlock exclusive content for the game via the Ubisoft Club, which launched earlier this week. For players of previous Assassin’s Creed titles, the Club offers the benefit of exclusive outfits from previous Assassin’s Creed protagonists, such as Ezio, Shao Jun, Aveline, Elise and Edward. As they gain experience points and unlock badges, Club members can also redeem Units for six exclusive rewards, such as unique weapons, colour schemes for their wardrobe and the official soundtrack. The Ubisoft Club is free and can be accessed at any time, without ever leaving the game.
There always seems to be a love or hate relationship between people and games that want to tell a story. They’re some of my favourite titles but Life is Strange is here to tell a story and if that’s not what you want it’s not for you. Luckily Life is Strange sticks to its guns throughout and never forgets it’s main goal is to tell a story just to try and please everyone. Through exploration, conversation and the protagonist’s internal dialogue we follow Maxine on her journey – although never call her that, it’s Max.
Max is a pretty cool 18 year old girl attending college trying to make her way as a Photographer. She’s a bit of a nerd and proud of it struggling as many have to navigate through the difficult social experiences of college. There’s a sense of reality to her that makes her feel like a genuine person. She doesn’t pause to look directly at the camera before quoting the latest meme to try and win favour with the audience. Instead she is allowed to develop and grow on her own as we watch as an observer. We see some of Max’s deepest thoughts and feelings and follow her through almost every experience. There isn’t anything to experience in LiS that isn’t through Max’s eyes which builds a strong connection. So much so that during intimate or personal moments I even felt slightly uneasy as if I was spying. There’s a strange awkwardness to those moments that only further build your relationship with Max.
It’s not just Max either, she’s backed up by an incredibly able supporting cast of characters that you get to know through their interactions with Max. Apart from a few NPCs stood by the side of the road there are no characters to interact with that don’t serve at least some purpose. And even those NPCs may have effects that aren’t instantly obvious. It never feels like your talking to a ‘B’ character or someone who doesn’t matter because basically, everyone matters.
The majority of the gameplay takes the form of conversations where, in the game’s own words, every decision counts. Even the smallest of interactions can have some serious consequences and it’s nice that they’re rarely blatantly obvious. With no manual save system you might be thinking there’s going to be a lot of unplugging consoles or PC’s or that LiS is a punishing roguelike but Max has a rather important trick up her sleeve.
There’s something Max can do that most people can’t. She has a limited ability to reverse time which she becomes aware of right at the start of the first episode. Undeniably this would be a significant ability in any game but when every decision counts it becomes vital. You quickly learn to play your way through the different options available to you in a conversation and then reverse and select the best outcome. It sounds like it’s impossible to have significant choices given that you can see the effects and then select the one you want but believe me you will agonise over some decisions. Often knowing the outcomes makes deciding worse and of course the butterfly effect is always a concern.
What’s removed from the game is the question of how to get the outcome you want. There’s none of the ambiguous remarks from Mass Effect 3 to trick you into a mistake. You not only know what each choice does but you can see the effects happen and then change them at will. So LiS therefore concentrates on making each decision important given that you have the tools to choose wisely. But that’s not to say there aren’t a few moments where you’ll need to rely on Max’s relationships and communication skills without being able to rewind but for close to the entire game you will be able to do so at will.
The story itself revolves mainly around Max’s relationships with the people around her combined with he understanding of her abilities. There is a criminal mystery to unravel along with a strange vision that Max keeps experiencing suggesting something major, really major, is about to happen to her home town. It’s an emotional story at times that takes time to develop and knows exactly when to wait and let things set in and when to punch you in the heart with a turning point. More than once I have been close to tears in certain scenes where emotions are high. LiS is definitely capable of shocking you and stirring emotions thanks to a cast of well designed and realistic characters along with a well written story.
The only time I didn’t enjoy myself was during some of the game’s investigation scenes. Between conversations you will inspect objects, find hidden items, use the rewind ability to solve physical puzzles or even just take a look around to see what you can find. But some of the puzzles had me frustrated as I aimlessly wandered around seeking a solution. It never took me that long but once or twice I felt the pace of the story was broken just enough to remove me slightly from the experience especially when you have several areas to search.
The watercolour art style distorts and ripples through every object and character in LiS and it just looks gorgeous. I love games that are stylish and unique and LiS held my attention visually right until the final credits rolled. It’s confident of its good looks and definitely not afraid to show off.
On top of that It’s very musically aware. There is a wonderfully directed scene right at the start were Max plays some music to herself on her phone and blocks out all but the music and her own thoughts allowing you to inspect objects and people silently as the music plays. Most of the music is heartfelt acoustic guitar stuff which would normally drive me mad but it’s well selected and matches the tone of the story and the style of the characters well.
But the voice acting totally overshadows the music, which is a pleasant change from the norm. Characters speak confidently and their emotions are clearly delivered but not exaggerated. Despite every piece of dialogue being great Max shines brightly above the rest. Her internal dialogue in particular sounds like actual thoughts you might have to yourself rather than someone reading from a script. It’s that realism that once again strengthens your relationship with her. Even when dealing with slang or discussing memes and pop culture every line is delivered naturally.
In one word Life Is Strange is beautiful. As a narrative experience it’s the best title I’ve played since Heavy Rain. It’s use of realistic characters really brings the cast to life as they grow patiently and significantly. It can be emotional and has the confidence to brood over time if needs be. The story takes its time alongside their development so that you are deeply invested in all the characters – but especially Max. From the first chapter I was hooked and the story just gets better as it goes. Life is Strange tells a beautiful, melancholy and mysterious story through realistic character interactions and dialogue. It is proof that games are the best way to tell a story. Aside from the occasional pace breaking puzzle every second of Life is Strange was outstanding and the biggest tragedy is that I can only play it through for the first time once.

BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment has today revealed new details about ONE PIECE: Burning Blood! Burning Blood is a dynamic and colourful new fighting game featuring the world’s most famous pirate: Monkey D. Luffy. Engage in massive brawls with Sabo, Ace, Bartolomeo, Ener, Crocodile and Bartolomeo, all featured in the “One Piece” Anime & Manga. There’s also the newly announced Smoker – and you can expect other new characters to join the roster!
ONE PIECE: Burning Blood has several features that add a level of strategy to the fighting in the game. Ever dreamt of Luffy, Sabo and Ace fighting together as one epic team against their enemies? Well players can create a team of 3 characters and swap them out in order to gain a tactical advantage. Certain characters can use special Logia Moves for unique abilities: allowing players to burn through their enemies or even move faster than lightning! Logia Fruits also allow the use of Logia Guard: where some characters are untouchable by physical attacks for limited amount of time. However, the powerful Hakiblow is a solid counter to this guard. Last but not least, as in the original Manga, Devil Fruits will be the source of unique massive Special Attacks and Reinforced Special Attacks!
PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PlayStation Vita players can rejoice as this epic fighting-game will be released in Europe, Middle-East, Africa and Australasia in 2016!
