I downloaded the new game Killzone Mercenary, from Sony Computer Entertainment America (SECA) and Guerilla Games Cambridge, for the PS Vita.  This is hands-down the best first person shooter on the PS Vita.  Let’s dig in!

Game Overview

Here is how PlayStation.com describes the game:

The killer FPS experience on the PlayStation®Vita system

Developed by Guerilla Games Cambridge, Killzone: Mercenary game throws players into a deadly firefight as the ruthless Mercenary faction, taking on paid contracts not only from the dangerous ISA, but the vicious Helghast as well. There is no good. There is no evil. There is only the mission… and the money.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Full Campaign Mode: Play through 9 massive single-player missions, each with additional challenges and special objectives.
  • Breathtaking Graphics: Built on the same Killzone engine used on PlayStation®3 system, Killzone: Mercenary has stunning visuals and the smooth gameplay shows off the PS Vita system like no other game.
  • Robust Multiplayer: Intense combat for up to 8 players keeps the competition fierce.
  • Customize Across Modes: Customize your Merc’s loadout in Campaign and Multiplayer modes with armor, weapons and more. Customizations to your Merc apply to both modes!

Gameplay

You start out as a mercenary on a planet that was colonized by Earth but has been wracked by war and revolution.  The government has hired you to rescue the commander of the military on the planet, who has been taken prisoner and is in danger of being executed.  You must insert into the damaged building where she is being held and get her to safety.  You know the drill: stealth and shoot your way to her and get her out.

The graphics are very good, and the weapons are very usable.  You get cash for each enemy that you kill and for other accomplishments in the game, and you can use that in-game to upgrade weapons and armor.  The shooting mechanics are very good, and you’ll be up and running fairly quickly if you’ve ever played a first person shooter before.

One thing though; I am very used to snapping on targets.  This game does not support that, meaning that you have to manually aim each shot the old-fashioned way.  This is not a big deal; you adjust to the shooting mechanics fairly quickly.

Melee attacks are accomplished by pushing a button that comes up on the touchscreen and then completing a motion that is shown.  It is a little cumbersome at first but it works.  I would have preferred that the developer use the back touch pad for this, but hey you can’t have everything!  Throwing a grenade is accomplished by pushing an on-screen button to equip the grenade and then the right top button to throw.  Aim with the joystick and watch a satisfying explosion.  Profit!  This is pretty well-done on the Vita!  So far, the PS Vita has been missing a really well-done first person shooter.  No more; this is hands-down the best FPS on the platform and blows away the others that I’ve seen.
