WATCHING VIA UPNP
As part of the installation you get a UPNP server which means that you can watch the available channels on any device that supports UPNP such as:
Sony Playstation 3
XBMC MediaCenter, running either on PC or on XBox
Cyberlink PowerDVD
Nero ShowTime
Windows MediaPlayer 12
Western Digital Live! Network player
and others
DVBLink UPNP server does not require any special configuration and starts working immediately after installation.
If you are using Windows7 you can watch TV channels without installing any special software with Windows MediaPlayer 12.
DVBLink channels appear under Recorded TV section in the left hand column:
You then just click on the channel you want and when the window opens, click the Play button and watch away.
One thing you need to remember though is just because something supports UPNP, it doesn’t mean it will actually play the content.
For example, I took my iPad, downloaded Media Link Player Lite for iPad (plus some others as well) and tried to get it to work.
When I fired up the application it found my UPNP server straightaway.
It found the TV Channels.
It even showed the list of available channels and then showed that they couldn’t be played!
So, just remember that if you cant play back on something that you think supports it, it probably is down to the device and not your setup!
WATCHING VIA THE WEB
The DVBLink Web Server enables you to watch TV outside of your home via a Internet browser.
The first thing you need to do is to open the Network Pack Configuration tool again on the server.
You can change the base port that it uses if something else on your network is using port 8080. The DVBLink manual states:
Base port. The server accepts incoming web connections on this port. It also uses up to 4 consecutive ports above the base port for actual streaming. The default base port value is 8080. Important! To be able to connect to your server computer from outside of your home you need to open base port and four consecutive ports on your ADSL modem’s firewall and configure the port forwarding for these ports on your router. Please consult user manual of your network equipment on how to do it.
Oberon over on the DVBLink Forums made a post to help everyone to do this:
A bit of general theory first.
Setting up access from outside for Network Pack is no different from setting up you bit torrent client. So if you have configured the bit torrent client at least once you should recognize the steps. Also you might refer to the router configuration FAQ of bit torrent programs for the details.
To access the computer, running Network Pack, from outside your house you need to connect WAN and LAN networks. It is kind of making a tunnel from the web client to the server computer. There are two essential things that have to be done here:– Firewall configuration
– Port forwardingFirewall configuration.
ADSL modems usually have all external ports closed to protect your home network, except for a number of standard ports – for HTTP access, FTP etc. To open the ports for NetPack access you need to log into your ADSL modem user interface (most/all modems offer http access to them to configure the modem’s properties). Then you have to find Firewall configuration there and open 5 TCP ports: base port and four consecutive (in the default case 8080 – 8084). Modem’s reboot might be necessary to apply the new settings.
Port forwarding
Port forwarding is done on your router. It effectively creates a tunnel from the external network to your internal network. In a nutshell it does the following : it allows incoming requests from the outside network on the port X to be forwarded to the computer with the IP address x.x.x.x.
To configure port forwarding you need to log into the user interface of your router and find “Port forwarding” configuration there. Depending on the type of the router it can also be referred as “Forwarding”, “Application server” etc.
Once found you need to specify the following:
-Name (optional, sometimes not present in the configuration): DVBLink
-Protocol: TCP
-Ports: base port + 4 consecutive (by default 8080-8084)
-To computer: <IP address of your computer that runs Network Pack>
-To port, through port: the actual value depends on the router – leave it blank or enter 8080-8084You may need to reboot the router to apply the changes.
That’s it! Once both steps are finished you should be able to access you DVBLink Server from outside.Important!
We have seen the cases when default port 8080, although working good in internal LAN configuration does not work when accessed from outside. Try setting the base port to another value in this case – something like 10000 and check whether it works.
