You can then set what you want status emails on, and also put in your email address. Tranquil will also receive a copy of your status reports (by default, although you can remove this is you wish) which will help them with any support calls you might have.

I decided to verify the disks and got this status message:

06-02-2010 20-01-34

and this email:

Tranquil PC Safe Server Module

Email report

SSM Serial Number : 70124

HDD Drive Serial Number : S24QJD0SB27980

HDD Slot : 0

Your SSM has issued the following STATUS

Partition started verifying rebuild process.

I could watch the progress of the checks, but be aware this is not a quick process.

After the verification I received the following status message:

06-02-2010 22-19-33

and this email:

Tranquil PC Safe Server Module

Email report

SSM Serial Number : 70124

HDD Drive Serial Number : S24QJD0SB28015

HDD Slot : 1

Your SSM has issued the following STATUS

Partition completed verifying rebuild process.

So overall the software was simple to use and gave me confidence that everything was working as expected.

FINAL THOUGHTS AND CONCLUSION

I really like the SQA-5H-SAFE Windows Home Server from Tranquil. It is small, relatively quiet, and comes with the fantastic SSM.

As it is one of the series 2 Windows Home Servers from Tranquil it has the Atom D510 processor, which so far in the various tasks I performed on the box seemed to hold up no problem.

The box comes in either white or black and also comes with a 3 year warranty (with optional Life Server package).

Price wise, the SQA-5H-SAFE starts at £569 excluding VAT, which makes it an expensive Windows Home Server, but remember, this is because you are getting the SSM as part of the package. If you want to buy the standard SQA-5H WHS, which is exactly the same box but without the SSM, the cost is from £399 (excluding VAT).

Just ask anyone who has ever lost data (and that includes me) if that data was important then you probably would have paid any price to get it back, and this way you can add an additional layer of protection!

So, if you want a new Windows Home Server, powered by the new Atom chip, and you want that extra security from a redundant primary drive, the SQA-5H-SAFE is the one for you.

I’ve been using it as my primary WHS for the last few days and I think its great – I am happy in the knowledge that I am even more protected than I was before!

  1. Good review. I just bought one of these and have high hopes. Initial thoughts:

+no need to leave my pc running for torrents etc

+works nicely with the Xtreamer that came with it

    but

-can't get my laptop to backup to it (keeps telling me to try chkdsk)

-steelvine monitor just refuses to detect the server

-it has a fan! Not too loud but louder than nothing.

    • Hi Mario

What OS is your laptop running?

have you run chkdsk on your laptop?

I had a problem with Steelvine, turned out to be a firewall problem and ports needed to be opened (check the "manual" that came with it).

And yes, it has a fan – the bottom picture on page 1 shows the fan. It needs a fan to protect the disks.

      Andrew
