Review: Table Top Racing for PS Vita

The people behind Table Top Racing provided me a free copy of the game on the PS Vita for review purposes.  Here is my review.

tabletop-racing-screenshot-01-psv-us-21jul14

The people behind Table Top Racing provided me a free copy of the game on the PS Vita for review purposes.  Here is my review.

Table Top Racing is a racing game, similar to Mario Kart, and is available on IOS and Android.  It is also available for the PS Vita and costs $7.99 in the US.  Here is how the game is described by the developer:

Table Top Racing (TTR) is a fast and furious miniaturised combat racing game that pits all manner of crazy cars and automobiles against each other. Welcome to a world of table top race tracks, over-sized obstacles and insane power-ups. TTR might be miniature but don’t be fooled by its size! This little combat racer will knock your giant socks off!

If you’re a Micro Machines or Mario Kart fan – TTR is for you! Challenge yourself to the carnage of 4 player online multiplayer and make your mark on the Global Ranking Boards. Win coins, upgrade vehicles and race in over 30 Special Events.

The Cars are bonkers, the competition fierce and the action relentless. Think you can handle the on-track madness? Well get ready for some white knuckle racing!

Here is a trailer that shows some of the gameplay:

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5ze9mZI7Jw%5D

Now that you know what the game is supposed to be like, let’s dive in.

Gameplay

Table Top Racing is reminiscent of Mario Kart on the Wii U; you race around a course in different vehicles, upgrading them as you earn points, and using weapons to fry opponents and ensure the win.  You start out in an ice cream truck; winning races gets you points that you use to purchase upgrades, such as handling improvements and weapons to use during races. I graduated to a micro-bus in later levels, spending my points winnings on upgraded vehicles and vehicle characteristics: Speed, Grip, Acceleration, Armor and Turbo, as illustrated with this screen shot.

2014-08-27-190019

You must earn upgrades in order to be able to win some of the later races, but  had no issues with the lower levels in playing with what comes with the $7.99 purchase price and what I managed to earn winning races.

The graphics reminded me of playing with Matchbox cars on my parent’s furniture as a kid, and I enjoyed the tracks laid out across kitchen tables.  This game takes full advantage of the PS Vita graphics capability, delivering smooth action frames and detailed environments.

2014-08-27-185058

Since Table Top Racing is a port and is also available on Android and IOS, it does not take advantage of the accelerometer that is available on the PS Vita, and that is a drawback.  However, using buttons and the analog joysticks on the Vita to turn and accelerate was easy and provided fun gameplay, and the rear touchpad can be used to provide a look in the rear view mirror.

Completing a race, Table Top Racing gives you feedback on how you did and how many points you earned.  Depending on the race, you might be asked to win outright, or not to finish last, among other goals…achieving those goals sets you up to win the points that you need to upgrade your vehicle and continue the fun.

2014-08-27-185249

There are 8 race tracks, 17 upgradeable cars, 6 gameplay modes and a fun 4-car online race mode exclusive to the PS Vita.  In fact, the publisher states that this game is best played on the PS Vita due to better graphics performance and the enhanced rear touchpad controls.

Check out these screenshots!

Overall Evaluation

Table Top Racing for PS Vita is a fun port, well worth the $7.99 price.
