First Look: Clandestine

0

When you watch the hero of any 90’s spy thriller they all share one thing in common. They always stand directly in the spotlight and soak up as much of the attention as possible. But what about ‘the guy in the van’. They do at least half the work but never get half the credit. Clandestine looks to set the record straight.

Clandestine is a co-op game by design rather than offering it up as a secondary mode. One member of your partnership plays as the operative and the other as the ‘guy in the van’. If you’re in the van you’ll be tasked with checking cameras to identify enemy locations for your partner, hacking doors to allow your partner to progress or even occasionally using the environment to take out an enemy. This all takes place as if you’re the character sat a computer. So all you see is the interface(s) your character would see.

Meanwhile Sarah (the operative), who has an adequately complex back story, will be sneaking around taking and giving instructions, judo chopping enemies and generally mimicking Sam Fisher; from the original Splinter Cell. For this player the game is completely third person. You’ll be relying entirely on ‘simple’ stealth mechanics using cover and only a few simple gadgets. There’s no ‘stealth cammo’ in Clandestine. Everything you’ll use is basically from the 90’s, or at least movies of the 90’s.

It’s very clear that Clandestine’s stealth is looking back to a time before stealth games became third person action games. For instance there are strict limits on equipment, so you can’t become the walking armoury that Sam Fisher has become. The only guns available to you will be pistols. No rifles at all. You must use proper stealth to complete your objectives. And teamwork.

But by far the most important feature of Clandestine is the possibility of emergent experiences due to the need for cooperation. It’s no good being in the van and not providing your operative with real-time updates. I’ve got visions of counting down to indicate when my friend should sneak behind a patrolling guard. Or panicking to quickly open a door as your operative attempts to avoid detection. Imagine taking fire and having to wait for support with no idea what’s going on, trusting that your partner has your back. These stories and interactions are real. They’re what will make Clandestine a great game.

Clandestine excites me a lot. I miss the old Splinter Cell games. And I’ve never been given the chance to be the person in the earpiece. Clandestine is looking like it will be a great stealth experience but also offer something genuinely new. And that doesn’t happen much these days. Once the game is a little closer to being ready I’m hoping to do a play session with one of the team so stay tuned for that. Clandestine should be in any stealth fans wish list and is due for release exclusively to PC early 2015. Stay tuned for more soon!

Glasgow band picked by author to provide theme to game

0

RedBedlam has announced the licensing of the irresistibly catchy Wanna Make Some Noise by Glasgow band Brooksy and The Sound Collectors as the theme song for its innovative genre-hopping videogame Bedlam.

brooksy

Author Christopher Brookmyre, whose collaboration with RedBedlam has given rise to both the video game and the novel of the same name, spoke about how Wanna Make Some Noise formed part of “the soundtrack in his head” when he was writing the story.

Christopher Brookmyre commented: “I found myself writing this novel about someone trapped in a digital world, desperate to reconnect with reality, and around this time I first heard Wanna Make Some Noise, which encapsulates precisely the same sentiments. It’s a song about how in this age of communication, in some ways, ironically we are more cut off from each other than ever. It served as the perfect theme song for my story .

absolute_cwb1963-cover-_web_

RedBedlam, the developers of the game Bedlam, were looking for a song to use at the end of the game as the credits are rolling. RedBedlam’s Marketing Director Nick Witcher explains:  “We were looking for a catchy, upbeat track to finish the game. Once Chris played us the song, we knew we were onto a winner.

“The licencing of the track is an excellent fit all-round too – I’m a firm believer that gaming can act as a vehicle to bring other forms of culture like music and literature to a whole new audience, and vice-versa. In Bedlam, with a great addition to the soundtrack, we have the ultimate cross-cultural model.”

Brooksy and the Sound Collectors have just released their latest album, Citizen, which features Wanna Make Some Noise. The album is available on iTunes – Brooksy from the band commented; “I wondered if the spoken word will become genetically redundant in many years to come, whereby all forms of communication will become remote. Despite the benefits and wonders of the information age it is sometimes enough to make any rational person want to scream and shout in sheer frustration.”

Brooksy continued “the theme of Bedlam dovetailed with the overriding message of Wanna Make Some Noise and to be endorsed by Chris Brookmyre and Nick Witcher at RedBedlam is a great accolade for any breaking band or individual. “

cZeus is a Maths brain game for Android and iOS

cZeus is a new challenging and rewarding brain training game that successfully increases numeracy skills through entertaining play. The app is free to download for Android and also iOS , the game helps improve memory, logic and attention skills whilst building numeracy confidence through challenging interactive puzzle play.

czeus

cZeus encourages players to use their basic arithmetic skills to fill on-screen grids with numbers using four simple rules to progress to the next level. The game doesn’t require advanced ability in maths to play; a tutorial helps guide players through the early stages with clear step-by-step instructions. The puzzle game gradually increases in difficulty as the player improves, but clues are provided along the way. It might appear tough, but the game is hugely rewarding, and a great all round brain trainer for anyone who wants to brush up on their core maths, logic and attention skills and for those who want more confidence tackling everyday maths problems.

czeus 3

Dr Shohreh Blank, creator of cZeus, believes that, like the body, the brain should be trained and exercised on a regular basis. Dr Blank feels that modern technology such as calculators and mobile phones have had a detrimental effect on mental arithmetic and have promoted a certain laziness. cZeus was designed to help people feel more confident with their numeracy skills, and maintain these skills through playing the game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qqJWSUNHnw

We see today many adults with poor numeracy skills in the western world (worse than some developing countries) and it is no surprise to see our children are also relying on technology to complete basic sums. This is partly because of our cultural attitude towards maths, but mainly due to lack of practice.

Using the cZeus App can change that. It builds confidence and improves numeracy, through a fun and engaging puzzle. We have added some exciting graphics and Greek mythology to further relax the player whilst learning. I would like to see this barrier towards maths come down – it’s cool to play with numbers and it’s just smart to be confident with your numeracy.”

czeus 2

cZeus App has two modes, sprint or marathon providing different challenges to the player. To guide players through the game there are tips on the website with a suite of videos on its rules and how to solve cZeus puzzles more information can be found at http://czeuspuzzles.com/.
