Review: FIFA 16

The biggest compliment we can pay to EA’s FIFA, is that each yearly iteration is as anticipated as the start of the football season itself. With each coming season, comes a new hope; and it begins with the announcement of fixtures. With FIFA, it begins with the announcement of new features and refinement of play modes. So let’s talk about what’s new.

fifa16_xboxone_ps4_gamescom_liverpoolwalkout_lr_wm

Defence

One of the key criticisms of FIFA 15 was that it was a brilliant attacking game, but lacked a little in defence, with players often frustrated by super quick wingers, exploiting space defenders had no chance of covering. It sounds small, but to change the balance of the game to allow defence to play a much bigger role is a risk, but it’s one that’s paid off, big time.

There’s a few refinements and additions that deliver a more realistic game this year, including the ‘swing step’ and ‘reactive AI’. These two elements are simple enough, but together sift the focus from playing fast wingers to a better all-round formation based game.

The ‘swing step’ is essentially a new positional move allowing defenders to pivot or quickly change position so as to now open up large spaces for wingers to exploit. The key thing here, is you’ll notice it happening, but within a matter of games, come to except this as normally, so it has little impact on gameplay, outside of evening the odds.

EA’s waxed lyrical about ‘reactive AI’ in the build up to release, and it’s clear from the start the impact this refinement has on gameplay. As opponents make runs on and off the ball, defenders and midfielders move quickly to track that run, but in this year’s game, another player drops in for cover in the area vacated. This single move makes formations more solid in defence, while still allowing fluidity in attack. Strictly speaking, you shouldn’t really see a formation in real life when attacking – only when defending, and FIFA replicates this brilliantly.

A final tweak to defending, and attack, is interceptions. In the modern game, this is a key part of defending with and without the ball – the further up the field you are, the quicker this leads to exploiting the opposing team – the closer to your goal, the faster you can recycle to maintain control, or break through the midfield for a faster attack.

Attack

So when you take away the biggest way to exploit opponents through speed by fixing the defence, and team defending as a whole with realistic shapes, can you retain the rush of a brilliant attack, or utilise through balls without them becoming the go-to tactic online? EA’s answer is to make the midfield the most important part of the game, and rightly so. It’s with this one, simple adjustment, before you even get into the final third which makes 16 the bet FIFA in years.

fifa16_xboxone_ps4_gamescom_rmvatl_lr_wm

After any Premier league game, you’ll see a bunch of stats, including interceptions, assists, shots on and off target. They’re all important, but one which FIFA hasn’t managed to replicate thus far, as bee the balance of play across each third. Finally, with tweaks to the controls and the new ‘pass with purpose’ feature, the midfield finally gets its moment to shine.

Controlling the ball is all-important in this area of the pitch, because a slight error, or a misplaced pass can directly lead to an overload, or leave you in no position to effectively defend, and having to give away a foul in front of goal. It’s the quickest way to get to the area, too, with through balls becoming less important, leading to a bigger pay-off when they do happen.

A key addition for online matches, as much as offline is no-touch dribbling, effectively freeing you from the ball, allowing feints, swerves and re-positioning of the player around the ball with the right stick. It’s a subtle change, but a welcome one in the possibilities it creates, and the speed at which you’ll continue to move without engaging traditional skill moves. For online matches, this increases this plays into the hands of the pros, but also allows the layman to really impress with their skills. The days of four passes to the opposition box aren’t gone, but mastering no-touch control certainly adds another skill element to traditional tactical play, and one you’ll need to learn to exploit opponents.

These key gameplay features don’t instantly take hold, and the first dozen or so games will feel slower than last year. But stick with it, and these refinements present an iteration of FIFA which allow the engine to excel, creating new types of goals, and intriguing challenges for those who like to go deeper into tactical play. They allow the flow of the game to increase and decrease like real world football, and together, they make FIFA more playable for the long term, encouraging master, rather than showing the goods to the player at the first kick and allowing them to run with it. It’s a laudable design decision, and one I commend.

But what else has changed, been added, or taken away? The biggest, is the addition of women’s football. While you can’t play the WSL, or actual championships, you are given a host of national teams with which to explore the nuances of the women’s game.

fifa16_xboxone_ps4_women_germany_lr

If you’ve watched women’s football before, and I have for about three years, you’ll know it isn’t so much based on strength, nor speed; it’s about the core elements that make football great. Passing, movement, and playing for love, rather than money, which has tainted the male version of the sport. With the women’s offering in FIFA 16, EA has created an even more realistic simulation, and one which can be more satisfying than the men’s, duplicating player attributes, team strengths, and the ‘feel’ of the football more closely than anything FIFA has done before.

While the women aren’t household names, and there aren’t many teams, or indeed leagues, this year’s inclusion of women’s football is a brilliant first step in what I hope will be a standard feature that grows over time, including licenses, tournaments, its own manager mode and single player mode.  The world is at the feet of EA with this game mode, and I hope they take the ball and run with it.

Of course, Ultimate team gets a makeover, this time with Ultimate Team Draft, a mode than allows you to pick formations, and a team from a draw of five players, then playing in a series of four matches. Winning four matches in a row nets you some serious rewards, including packs and coins. It’s simple, but bloody addictive, and we can see this mode becoming popular online, although it’ll be interesting to see how EA iterates on this for FIFA 17.

Two more additions to FIFA 16 take the crown this year, though, and the first of those is training in Manager Mode. Too often you’ll find yourself simulating between matches, or even straight to transfer windows, which are unfortunately unchanged, simply to buy more players, or sell the duds. To be fair to EA, it’s very similar in Football Manager, and the addition of training builds a two-part challenge into every week. Firstly, do you train your players, or just got to the match? It’s time consuming, and you will play the same training drills over time. However, the second challenge is who to train – your first team, or your youth team. Do you invest that time now in your first team, or build for the future?

Even then, you’re limited to six individual drills aimed only at improving the attributes of players. As it stands, training is a great addition to gameplay, but if team training is added in, and if each player in your team had a chemistry rating in manager mode, wouldn’t that make coaching a real possibility for a mode that’s still hugely popular? It’s not there right now, but it’s only a small step from the current design, and I’d love for EA Canada to take it to the next level.

Traditionally, reviewers often compare FIFA to PES, and although PES has had a great year, I’m personally of the opinion that it’s swapped places with FIFA, rather than improve. It’s gone more Arcade, while FIFA has drifted In a new direction. But, it’s drifted that way with purpose. How do you continually try and make the best sports game better? It’s a difficult challenge every year for EA Canada, but it’s one they never shy away from. This year, although the gameplay changes mean the feel of play isn’t instant, the world’s best sports game has gotten better, not from immediate thrills, but through subtle tweaks and additions that mean you’ll still be enjoying FIFA well into the summer. Just as the Premier League is wide open this year, so many believe the race for superiority in football games is too. I’m not one of those people. FIFA is far and away the king of football games. The king is dead. Long live the king.

The Guitar Hero Live UK launch saw ultimate rock girl Laura Whitmore create an image inspired by iconic rock and roll behaviour as she hurled a TV out of a first-floor window at London’s Truman Brewery. She was joined by fellow celebrity Guitar Hero fan Danny Jones, who also had a go at creating his own rockstar moment before getting to grips with one of the year’s most anticipated games.

“Guitar Hero is one of the most beloved gaming franchises of all time, and now, after years of research and development, it’s back, totally reinvented, and better than ever with Guitar Hero Live,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. “The experience of being up on stage, in first person, playing in front of a live crowd that responds to your performance in real time, will put your heart in your throat. Each mode of the game delivers a new take on the music game genre. An unparalleled leap in rockstar realism, GH Live is a live-action experience that delivers the full emotional roller coaster of being on stage, with players performing in a real band, in front of real crowds, who react in real time to how well or poorly you play. Shot live with musicians performing in front of real crowds, GH Live delivers the raw excitement and stage fright that comes with owning the stage in front of thousands of cheering – or jeering – fans.

GHTV is a revolutionary new way to play Guitar Hero. The 24-hour playable music video network lets fans play along to a continually-updated collection of official videos, from the newest releases to favourite hits. GHTV is a living, breathing platform that will launch with hundreds of songs and will continue to grow, with new songs added weekly, serving as an ever-expanding source for music discovery while bringing the party atmosphere back to the living room. In GHTV, fans can play along with different channels of music or choose to play one of hundreds of songs on demand. Fans can win fame playing solo or with their friends in local head-to-head multiplayer, and online against other players trying to master the same song. And simply by plugging in a USB mic, players can sing along to the music in both GH Live and GHTV with lyrics displayed on screen.

GHTV also includes Premium Shows, which highlight premium playable content such as live concert footage, debut music videos in the platform and more. Starting today, fans can experience the GHTV premiere of the Avenged Sevenfold Premium Show, including playable concert footage recorded at the band’s recent headlining performance at England’s venerable Download Festival. Players will also be awarded with a custom Avenged Sevenfold themed note highway and player card. Activision is also giving fans a chance to get in the game by submitting clips of themselves performing Ed Sheeran’s hit song “Sing” through the musical.ly app, with winners being featured in a world premiere music video that will be playable in the game.

Review: Pro Evolution Soccer 2016

After regaining their once spectacular form over the last few years, Konami and PES Production’s 2016 entry into the football genre promises to be their best yet. Touting new and improved mechanics, as is custom on a yearly release cycle, can Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 hold off the ever looming FIFA entry?

Recreating the beautiful game has always been the top priority over at the Pro Evo camp, let EA have their licences and flashy menus, with PES, it’s all about the gameplay. And to be fair, it’s never been so good. All the talk regarding the new ‘advanced collision system’ that seems very reminiscent of the usual buzz words and hype surrounding a games release into the wild, is actually true. Amongst many other improvements, you can genuinely feel this coming into play. Darty and nippy wingers will soon run into trouble against stocky defenders they come up against, whilst strong, stout attackers, more realistically, will have a greater advantage when it comes to jostling and winning headers.

PES2016_Neymar_02
New animations add to the realism

The physicality of the game is difficult to pinpoint onto one aspect, instead you’ll feel it in everything you do. Momentum and weight come into play in almost all facets, whether it be attempting a potentially risqué tackle, or just scurrying through sluggish defenders. The AI feels stronger this year too, instead of the nearest opposing player just rushing straight at you and swiping the ball away, they’ll play more conservatively and wait for opportunities to pounce. It can lead to a more thoughtful style of play, giving you time to think and plan your actions, instead of just instantly sprinting out or passing as soon as someone comes near.

One of the largest improvements this year over the previous outing is the sheer responsiveness and fluidity of the controls. This of course helps to tie in excellently with the more physics based approach this time around. It not only makes individual players feel more unique, but also shows off their real life talents too, controlling players like Tevez or Aguero can feel a world apart from others. Of course everything that made last year’s PES so entertaining on the pitch makes a welcome return too, the realistic feel of how counter play can be so devastating to either side means one mistake can easily change the outcome. This is without doubt, the closest you’ll get to the real experience in terms of drama and flair.

A slew of additions help to increase the realism too. Dynamic weather changes and new goalkeeper personalities mean surprises are bound to happen; along with new and updated animations making their appearance, hopefully it’ll be less likely for repetition to set in too quickly. In fact the only thing that’s such a far cry from reality, are the referees’ inattentiveness to players’ flagrant disregard for another’s wellbeing. I mean you can seriously afflict some atrocities on this without the man in black giving two monkeys. It’s an odd choice, but perhaps it’s yet another thing tied into the physics-orientated style of the game.

PES2016_weather_02
Dynamic weather can change the pace mid-game

In terms of modes on offer, there are the usual quick matches, tournaments, training and online offerings to peruse. Yet these might not see much action compared to the improved Master League career mode and of course, myClub (PES’s version of FIFA’s Ultimate Team). Master League has, thankfully, had more than just a quick lick of paint applied to it. It not only looks much more modern and streamlined, but also more closely resembles a football management game due to its calendared appearance. It might still not quite measure up to FIFA’s career mode, but little touches here and there make strong cases to give it a try. The game will generally make a large fuss about signing high profile players to your team by triggering press conference cutscenes too, making grabbing that big named star feel just that little bit more special. A nice little touch is that those star signings will generate more income from fans too, such as selling more shirts with their favourite player’s name emblazoned on the rear. The transfer system seems a bit more intuitive and rational than before, but sadly you still can’t negotiate personally with the player.

Pro Evo’s ‘myClub’ could well be quite the time sink for a lot of players too, particularly those who’ve dabbled in FUT. Expanding on last year’s debut, there’ve been some beneficial tweaks and added polish without managing to flip it on its head. You still can’t transfer players for example, but people in your roster can now level up, (slowly) increasing their stats and experience; overall giving it a solid RPG-lite feeling of progression. Players you don’t want, or have no real need for, can be converted into a trainer which will remove them, but in return will give a stat boost to another player you choose. It’s a decent system complete with rarity colours and the hunt for better players driving you forwards; however people who wish to really succeed will undoubtedly have to consider spending extra (real life) currency here.

PES2016_weather_01
Honestly don’t even bother appealing for a free kick, it’s not happening

As far as the game’s presentation goes, it can be a bit of a mixed bag. Textures and fidelity on things like clothing and certain players’ faces not only look fantastic, but realistic too, as do the incredible amount of animations in the game. The physical collisions between players and the ball look great and believable, especially when in slow motion where you can see each individual contact point. A lot of the menus have been spruced up to give a more modern (and competing) feel, with the Master League receiving a lot of love too. However, the crowds can look a little too generic at times despite how pronounced their effect can be in terms of sound. The commentary track has its highs and lows too, with inane tap-ins that bear no consequence on the outcome of the game receiving the same excitable admiration as spectacular 89 minute volleys that tie up the game.

On this generation of consoles at least, PES Productions have proved once again that it’s substance over style that should matter most; that the gameplay itself has unquestionably done more than enough to warrant a recommendation. The lack of licences isn’t particularly a deal breaker anymore due to the ability to download custom strips and even managers, and the effort put into modernising the atypical Konami menus is welcomed too. FIFA might still look better in certain areas, but PES feels better where it matters most, on the pitch.

New faces like Rosalina also hit the courts, along with returning characters like Luigi, Waluigi, Boo and more for tennis with a distinct Mushroom Kingdom twist. On top of standard shots like topspin, lobs, slices and more, the new Ultra Smash move sees characters leap high into the air and smash the ball down to devastating effect. Adept tennis tacticians can also gain the advantage by hitting the right shot while standing in the coloured Chance Areas that occasionally appear, unleashing super-strong smashes or bamboozling slices to flummox adversaries on the other side of the net.

Using a combination of controllers including the Wii U GamePad, Wii Remote, Wii U Pro Controller and Classic Controller Pro, up to four players can get together in supported modes for lively tennis battles. And with a choice of camera angles, there’ll be no more defeats blamed on having to play on the far side of the court – the TV and GamePad screen can each show a different end of the court, so both teams will always have the perfect view.

Gameplay modes offer plenty of opportunities for tennis tomfoolery:

  • Knockout Challenge: Tense tiebreak matches against increasingly difficult computer-controlled opponents await in this single-player mode. If the going gets too tough, you can call in a supported amiibo as your doubles partner.
  • Mega Battle: Your character grows to gigantic proportions after grabbing a Mega Mushroom, dominating the court with their increased power and range. When rivals on both sides of the net are giant-sized, anything can happen!
  • Classic Tennis: For those who prefer their tennis a little more traditional, Classic Tennis offers two variations: Standard mode features Chance Shots and Jump Shots but no Mega Mushrooms, while Simple puts competitors between the tramlines with no Chance Shots or power-ups – a real test of tennis prowess.
  • Online multiplayer: Go up against distant adversaries from all over the world in competitive ranked play in either Mega Battle or Classic Tennis modes, or quickly jump into more casual matches. Two players on the same console can team up to take on all-comers, or a supported amiibo can join you on as your doubles partner on the online courts.

As a limited launch offer, anyone who purchases Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash from Nintendo eShop in its first four weeks on sale will receive a download code for the Nintendo 64 game Mario Tennis on Wii U Virtual Console. This N64 title not only kick-started Mario’s tennis career, it also introduced the world to Waluigi for the very first time.

Compete to see who’s the top seed in your household, train up a compatible amiibo as a powerful doubles partner and match up against online opponents in Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, coming to Wii U in Europe on November 20th. Two colourful new controller designs – Wii Remote Plus Toad and Wii Remote Plus Bowser – will also be available on the same day.
