DiRT Rally is out now for PS4,Xbox One and PC

0

Codemasters & Koch Media has today announced that DiRT Rally is now available to buy on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC(DVD).

From today, console players are welcomed into the vibrant DiRT Rally community and invited to join the hundreds of thousands of players on PC who road tested the game over 80 million miles during the game’s Steam Early Access programme. DiRT Rally is the most authentic and thrilling rally game ever made. It perfectly captures that white knuckle feeling of racing on the edge as you hurtle along dangerous roads at breakneck speed, knowing that one crash could irreparably harm your stage time.

DiRT RALLY® logo DK

Every stage tests you differently, as you race on the edge of control across snow, ice, tarmac and dirt and tackle a variety of weather types. As the car suffers attrition and stages string together, your dedicated rally team tries to keep you competitive and each rally becomes a marathon-like test of concentration and skill.

DiRT Rally includes officially licensed FIA World Rallycross content, allowing you to experience the breathless, high-speed thrills of some of the world’s fastest off-road cars as you trade paint with other drivers at some of the series’ best-loved circuits, in both singleplayer and high-intensity multiplayer races.

DiRT Rally also features online league support and daily, weekly and monthly challenges that allow players to test themselves against the best drivers in the world and claim bragging rights as well as in-game currency. From today, console and PC players will be able to enjoy substantial new additions to the game.

New Classic Mini and Super 1600 series will introduce the thrills of rallycross racing from the start of the game and 21 advanced rally driving video guides will help gamers maximise their rallying performance. Players will be able to drive the vintage full gravel surface at Pikes Peak for the first time in the game and three of Colin McRae’s most iconic liveries will enable them to relive the exploits of a legendary rally champion.

The DiRT team have also added seven extra cars to the game:

·        Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak
·        Renault 5 Turbo
·        Renault Alpine A110
·        Opel Corsa Super 1600
·        Peugeot  207 S1600
·        Renault Clio S1600
·        Mini Classic Rallycross

“We’re delighted to be able to welcome PS4 and Xbox One players to the DiRT Rally community” said Paul Coleman, Chief Games Designer “We’ve been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm for the game our fans have shown us ever since we first revealed it and today marks the realisation of our vision to bring the game to as many players as possible. Welcome on board and we hope you enjoy playing as much as we’ve enjoyed making it!” DiRT Rally is now available on Steam, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC(DVD).

Available to buy now is the limited run DiRT Rally Legend Edition, which includes the full length feature documentary Colin McRae: Rally Legend. The film tells the full story of the rally icon that inspired the DiRT series from the man himself and charts his career from the earliest days, through to his domination of the rallying world and his involvement with the famous Codemasters games.

Also included in the console versions of the Legend Edition is the Fully Loaded MINI Pack, which unlocks and fully upgrades the MINI Cooper S from the start of the game, gives an exclusive livery for the car and provides a unique team mechanic with perks. In the UK, the Legend Edition also includes the Fully Loaded Ford Pack, featuring the Ford Escort Mk II, exclusively at GAME while a limited edition SteelBook complete with Driver’s Guide is available for gamers buying DiRT Rally at Sainsbury’s.

Final Thoughts

I was eager to test this set up having previously reviewed HDMI over Powerlines and been impressed. I have also seen other wireless senders that frankly don’t work very well and just aren’t worth bothering with, so with One for All offered me the chance to review this one I figured I would give it a go but I didn’t have very high expectations. And I was wrong!

Both the transmitter and the sender are very small and light, and even have their own stands to make sure they are safe and secure wherever you fit them.

Set up was simple – you just plug in the power and connect the devices via HDMI to the source and the TV you want to watch one. One thing to note, that you will need two HDMI cables as you don’t get any in the box. Not a huge issue but it would have been nice to have had everything you needed in one package rather than having to buy two extra cables.

Within a few moments the transmitter and the receiver will pair and that’s it – simple! I had perfect picture from both an SD and an HD source, and I was very happy!

One thing to note is that One for All say that transmitter and receiver need to be either within 30m line of site or with only one wall between them. When this is the case they work perfectly. The further away you have them though the more the picture will break up, so if you are not within those limits you might want to hold off from buying them. That’s not to say they won’t work, but you won’t get as good an experience. I tried two floors up and still got a fairly good picture but it was a little broken up (but like I said, its not designed to work in that situation).

Also, like any wireless signal, the environment can make a difference.

Overall, if you want to watch TV in another room of your home without the need for cables, and that room is within the parameters mentioned above, then you should really check this one out.

The One for All Wireless HDMI Sender is available now priced at £199.

Review: Atari Vault

0

Anybody ever heard of Atari games? Oh yes you have. Some of the very earliest legacy video games originated from this great company. Well Atari have released the Atari Vault, a massive collection of 100 classics from the 70’s and 80’s. It’s considerably easier to enjoy these retro classics from the comfort of your Steam library. Lets be honest that’s likely to be simpler and cheaper than getting an original Atari machine these days. And the resolution is definitely higher.

2016-01-25_000023

Cracking open the vault you will be met with a surprisingly modern interface with some fancy retro style graphics. You can flick through the original arcade machines and see the old game covers plastered on the sides of the machines. The modern resolution and updated visuals don’t let the retro theme go forgotten however. Brash colours and overstated UI elements are everywhere on the cluttered screen. Authentic to the last. Oh how user interfaces have progressed in 20 years.

One of my favourite inclusions is the gallery which contains all the box art and the arcade machines for you to check out. Flicking through there’s a lot of games I don’t know if I’m honest but when you stumble across one you recognize it’s all worth it. It’s definitely an education for any content that isn’t a nostalgic trip back in time.

The amount of content in the Vault is stunning. Even for the seasoned retro gamer there’s nothing missing. If you know Atari and arcade games they’re all here. The modern interface makes them all easy to search, browse and play. Value is definitely not a problem with the Vault.

2016-01-25_00002

Getting stuck into what is arguably Atari’s signature title, Asteroids, controls are simple to grasp and for the first time in who knows how long I was floating around enjoying Asteroids despite the colossal list of AAA titles sitting alongside the Vault in my Steam Library. Admittedly some of the fun comes from the memory of times gone by but these games are still pretty fun. There’s a reason why they’re still known 40 years or so later.

There’s even support for gamepads which brings the experience closer still to an arcade stick although there is just a little more finesse to the thumbsticks on a Dual Shock or a 360 pad. There’s even a useful band displayed at the bottom of the screen to remind you of the controls and help you out. It’s particularly useful given the non-native platform and controls. Plus the fact that it’s highly unlikely you’ve played the game anytime recently.

2016-01-25_000025

The Atari vault is an excellent way to remind yourself of how old you are. It’s far and away the best retro pack of games I’ve ever come across and represents amazing value. True enough there’s nothing new but the retro design and inclusion of a gallery of the game’s original covers and box art is a nice touch. Even if you’re only vaguely interested in original Atari titles the Vault is well worth buying. If you’re an old school gamer that knows even some of the games all the better. If you want a retro collection in your Steam Library this is it.

Final Thoughts

If you have either an Apple Watch or an iPhone (or both) you will probably want a charging solution that is more than just plugging the cable into the side of your laptop and leaving it to charge.

This is where Just Mobile step in and have a number of solutions to help. There are two different variations of the HoverDock, one for the Watch and one for the iPhone.

Both are small and light and can be easily transported if you want to take them with you, although I would imagine that most people will just leave them in one place and just pop their device on the dock whenever they want to charge it.

The HockDock doesn’t come with a charging cable, so you will need your original cable as well as the dock itself.

Putting the dock together is fairly straightforward, part of the design includes smart cable storage which just means you can wind up the cable with no effort at all.

Once you have the docks set up just the way you want them you will probably not want to remove the cable, so if you are needing to take a cable away with you somewhere and you don’t want to take the HoverDock as well, you might want to invest in another set of cables.

The HoverDock for the Apple Watch also enables you to use the Watch in Night Stand mode which is an added benefit.

If you have a need for a charging dock, then look no further than the HoverDock from Just Mobile, you won’t be disappointed.

Hearts and Minds Feature for Homefront: The Revolution

Playing as freedom fighter Ethan Brady, the ultimate goal in Homefront is to inspire the people to rise up against the brutal military occupation and ignite the revolution.

‘Hearts and Minds’ represents the state of uprising across the oppressed Yellow Zones of occupied Philadelphia, and will increase as the player performs acts of resistance, such as destroying KPA infrastructure.

The open world dynamically transforms around the player as Hearts and Minds increases – a once cowed civilian population will join the player in acts of defiance, and the entire Zone will evolve from a state of lockdown to open revolution on the streets.

Review: Bravely Second: End Layer

0

bravely_second_end_layer

The follow up to Bravely Default see our heroes old and new taking on a new foe. Can the sequel live up to the ground work laid out by its predecessor?

As mentioned earlier, Bravely Second: End Layer is a sequel and here we see our heroes get attacked by the new bad man in town, Kaiser Oblivion. As with all evil guys that show up at the start, our heroes couldn’t even touch him, resulting in their behinds getting handed to them and the kidnapping of Pope Agnes, one of the previous game’s protagonists.

After waking up from a coma induced by the attack, it is now up to our young knight Yew Geneolgia to assemble a team capable of saving Pope Agnes and restore peace once again in the land of Luxendarc.

Now for a game like this a story is needed, however I don’t believe it’ll be the main thing you’ll be invested in as it seems pretty basic. It follows the whole brave knight saving the kidnapped princess routine and therefore comes across pretty bland. During your journey, the game tries to fill in the gaps through something called Party Talk. This is completely optional, but basically what it does is allow you to listen in on conversations the characters would be having that you otherwise would not know about. I so far have not found a use for it and with the not so great voice acting, it became more of a pain after a while, however it could contain useful bits of information that could help you out further down the line. It could also be a way to keep the player constantly engaged during the periods of moving around certain areas.

The narrative may not be a whole lot to get into, but what makes Bravely Second: End layer the real deal is its gameplay which we’ll be getting into next.

When I started playing it felt very old school to me. It just gave off that feeling and to an extent, it has exactly that in its gameplay, topped up with more modern innovation in the RPG arena. For instance it follows the safe formula of turn based combat in which you and your opponent take turns to perform moves on each other similar to a chess match. In this case the person with the strongest attack or most health would come out on top; however there are a few other options that you are given which makes battles such as these more tactical.

One gameplay tactic I found interesting was using Default. This allows you to defend against enemy attacks while also earning something called BP or Brave Points. Brave Points can be used to allow a character to land more attacks during a single turn and can prove useful in finishing an enemy off in one go. You can also give up future turns by using more points than you have, however this comes with the consequence of becoming a sitting duck until it resets itself. I found that using the latter tactic is ok for random encounters, but when it comes to a boss, its best to save those BP up.

Another interesting addition to the battle is Agnes Pendant which allows you to communicate and cooperate with players from other worlds. You can register other players you like to play with as friends, summon them in battle and even share abilities. Of course as you are playing so will the others who own the game, so if you want to keep up to date on their abilities and attacks, you can download that data from the menu.

Items can be bought from the shops using PG or by finding treasure chests scattered around the world. Defeating any monster you encounter will also allow you to earn both of these.

A mix of both 2D and 3D graphics makes for an interesting blend to the game. While I’m not too fond of the static 2D you see when it came to the towns, it did help it stand out against other titles in its genre. To an extent it brought about an almost painted visual which was pleasing to the eye. This effect was deepened even further through the use of the 3D function on the 3DS; now I can’t speak for everyone, but even at full strength I still found it pretty comfortable to play with the visuals given that extra little pop.

Bravely Second: End Layer goes beyond the standard turn based RPG and brings with it new innovations that breathe life in to a continuously used game mechanic. I found the Brave aspect really refreshing as it just opens up a whole other possibility when it comes to strategically planning out your battles and I also liked the idea of the game letting you know what level you should be at when tackling an area or dungeon.

I’m not the biggest RPG fan, but I enjoyed playing this one, however if you are, Bravely Second: End Layer is a must have.
