Book Review: Alien USCM Augmented Reality Training Manual

Growing up I always loved pop up books, it was a simple but elegant way of visually bringing books and stories to life. The modern form of the pop up book comes in the form of Augmented Reality books from Carlton books, which use smart phones or tablets to bring to life literally through that device, sections of that book in an impactful way. Now combine that with the Alien film franchise and you have something that promises to provide a very special experience for fans.

The U.S.C.M. (United States Colonial Marines) Alien Augmented Reality Manual is a guide set in the Alien universe but presented in the form of an information manual for training U.S.C.M. marines to familiarise themselves with the Xenomorph threat. As soon as open the book and find the contents page you will be shown how to download the required app on IOS or Android to use with the book and will have the reader up and running in no time at all. I used my tablet for this as it has a bigger screen and enhanced the app use but my phone worked just as well but I preferred the larger screen.

The manual uses the cinematic film universe and references to the Aliens: Colonial Marines video games to form Case Studies to be read, containing information and pictures from the film which the book presents as if you are a budding Colonial Marine about to head out into the blackness of space to fight the Xenomorph threat. It can be a little corny to read but it is all part of the fun. Not only does it feature the original Alien Trilogy of films but also the more recent Prometheus and Alien: Covenant so it is as up to date as it is possible for this film franchise.

The Case Studies are pretty much what you would expect them to be as they give a short overview of the film featured including where in the universe it all happened and with information related to the events of that film with quotes thrown in for good measure. Depending on which film the case study is based on will also effect the additional information that is included such as how to fight the Alien and at times this can feel a little thrown into the pot for good measure and may not fit the narrative of that particular case study. But that is mainly due this book being presented as a training manual, so in that context and theme it makes sense to include additional writing to explain how you would fight an alien or how to survive an encounter with one or many but for me, it would have made sense to have it as its own case study rather then just added to one for the sake of keeping it all Marine.

Now what makes this book really stand out is indeed the Augmented Reality which I really enjoyed and did fill as something extra when reading this book. As a fan of the films, I did enjoy taking the case studies for what they were and enjoyed going down memory lane revisiting the information from the original films. Now the way this works is pretty simple, some of the case studies will have pictures that can be used with Augmented Reality app on your device. These pictures will be greyed out in the book so the reader will easily identify which ones can be augmented and the app will use the camera on the device which then triggers a video played through your device in the app to play. The really cool thing is how the images become an almost 3D hologram through your device, sitting on top of the page itself of the book, which is very cool especially when you can witness an Alien Egg actually open right before you.

There are also training activities which are really mini games to play via the app with the book such as trying to land a dropship or using a motion tracker to scan and find nearby aliens. The reader will even have the chance to perform a dissection on a face hugger. Some are trickier to play than others but it is a really fun aspect thanks to the Augmented Reality the book offers and does work well.

I do have some issues with just how the book is presented. The above training activities are all located in the middle of the book which personally I feel would have worked better if they had been placed throughout the book and just after a case study or two instead of just placed all together in the centre. Also some of the captions that go with the pictures in the book are either incorrect or just attributed to the wrong character or item which is clumsy at best and noticeable for those really familiar with the lore or die hard fans.

Overall this is a really fun book and a nice collection of information from the all the films which fans can appreciate. The Augmented Reality works tremendously and the app is really easy to install and use and if you can use a tablet even better but a good smart phone will be just fine as well. The activities and mini games provide an extra and fun aspect to the book and the case studies themselves are enhanced whenever the chance to use the AR app on a picture to really bring it to life.

One for fans certainly though for the diehard the main fun will come in the AR content rather than the information which they would already know but for fans who maybe only came to this franchise with Prometheus or Alien: Covenant then this guide is a great way or filling in some of the history and lore to the films.

U.S.C.M. (United States Colonial Marines) Alien Augmented Reality Manual is available from Amazon or directly from Carlton Books.

Vodafone launches world’s largest international future jobs programme

0

Vodafone today announced the launch of a ground-breaking international future jobs programme “What will you be?”  to provide career guidance and access to training content in the digital economy for up to 10 million young people across 18 countries. The Vodafone digital skills and jobs initiative is the largest of its kind in the world.

In parallel, Vodafone also announced plans for a significant increase in the number of young people brought into the company to gain direct experience of the digital workplace. Vodafone will expand its existing graduate, apprenticeship, internship and work experience schemes worldwide to reach a total of up to 100,000 young people by 2022.

The two initiatives were announced as Vodafone published the results of a major international public opinion survey revealing the extent to which young adults aged 18-24 believe they are ill-equipped to participate in the digital economy despite being the first generation to be “born digital”.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that more than 200 million young people are either unemployed or have a job but live in poverty. In many of the countries in which Vodafone operates, youth unemployment is at record levels, from 38% in Italy and 39% in Spain to 47% in Greece and 53% in South Africa. Previous studies have found that a prolonged period of unemployment shortly after a young person leaves education to enter the workforce can have a lifelong negative effect on individual confidence, self-esteem and wellbeing.

Paradoxically, unemployment among young people is rising just as businesses of all types and sizes are struggling to fill a wide range of digital technology roles that are critical for future growth. The European Commission estimates that around 500,000 digital jobs across the European Union will remain unfilled by 2020.

Getting young people into work

Over the last year, Vodafone has worked with specialist psychologists, careers advisers and training providers to develop a smartphone-based service – called the Future Jobs Finder (https://futurejobsfinder.vodafone.com/) – that offers young people a simple but comprehensive gateway to new skills and opportunities for employment in the digital economy.

The first step in the Future Jobs Finder is a series of quick psychometric tests designed to identify each individual’s aptitudes and interests and then map these to the most appropriate job category in the digital economy. In the second step, the individual is directed to specific job opportunities in their chosen location, including opportunities with Vodafone. Users can also access relevant online digital skills training providers, with many of these courses available for free. On completing the tests, users also receive a summary of their skills and interests that can be used on their C.V. or in a job application.

Getting young people into Vodafone

Vodafone has a strong employer brand recognised by young people. In each of the 26 countries in which Vodafone operates, there are well-established graduate, apprenticeship and internship schemes as well as a wide range of work experience opportunities including coding classes for high school girls. Over the next five years, Vodafone will double the number of opportunities offered to under-25s to experience the world of work, reaching a total of 100,000. This represents the largest commitment to training and development of young people since the founding of Vodafone 33 years ago.

Review: Cocoon Smart Home Security System

If you are in the market for a new home security camera, we have our review of the Cocoon Smart Home Security System.

Cocoon’s unique multi-room Subsound technology senses unusual sounds in your home, not just the room you place it in.

It’s Artificial Intelligence detects unwanted activity and learns to better protect your home, alerting you instantly if something unusual happens.

From the moment you turn it on Cocoon starts learning the unique ‘sound signature’ of your home, changing its security over time as your home changes.

This means you can trust it to decide when there’s something you need to know about.

And when it’s just the pet coming in.

Cocoon keeps your home protected and keeps you posted. Around the clock every day.

Who are Cocoon?

From their website:

“Cocoon first launched on the crowdfunding site Indiegogo in November 2014, smashing the campaign target in the first three days. Within a month Cocoon had been pre-sold to customers in over 50 countries, featured in almost every major tech publication and had secured seed funding from Breed Reply Investments.

Since early 2015 our team has grown from the initial 5 founders to a team of more than 30 based in Leeds and London.”

Specifications

What’s in the box?

The box contains the Cocoon, a power supply, ring mount to sit on, manual and a sticker.

A Closer Look

Configuring and Using Cocoon

Once you have plugged in the Cocoon to a power socket you need to configure it. All this is done via an app and your smartphone. Download the app and follow the steps.

Once you have completed all the setup steps, the Cocoon will check for any available updates and will automatically download and install them for you.

And that’s it – you are ready to go! The app will show you a number of items, including today’s activity and give you the option to watch the camera live.

You can also arm the system or sound the siren if you feel the need to.

Here is a video of Cocoon in action:

https://vimeo.com/245399768

Final Thoughts

The Cocoon is very small and lightweight – about the size of a tennis ball. It comes with a small ring base that you sit the Cocoon on to keep it stable. The power supply has a long cable in case you wanted to put the Cocoon away from a plug socket.

Setting up the Cocoon was very simple and quick – all I needed to do was plug it in, download and run the app, switch on location services on my phone and run through all the set up steps. That was it!

You can use the Cocoon in whatever way suite you. You can watch it live, or you can wait until you receive notifications – both of these options work very well.

The camera covers 120 degrees and has 720p HD video and also has night vision. The picture quality is very good and the night vision works very well too and you get good coverage from the wide angled lens. The only thing I would have preferred would have been a 1080p camera instead of the 720p one, but maybe in the next version they will do that?

I liked that I could trigger the siren if I wanted to, rather than having it go off with a false alarm. The siren itself is loud, so you really don’t want it going off unless you need it!

The subsound technology works very well – it takes a little while to learn your environment but once it does it picks up noise when you need it to.

If you forget to arm the Cocoon when you leave the house, don’t worry – it will automatically arm when you phone leaves the house.

All in all the Cocoon is a great little security device and camera, and it works pretty much out of the box. If you are thinking of getting something then you should definitely take a look at the Cocoon.

The Cocoon Smart Home Security System is available now priced £159.00.

You can learn more from the Cocoon website.
