Review: Rift Rangers

When you first boot up Rift Rangers, you’ll be greeted with a man singing the title at you. It instantly transported me back to my childhood, watching the intros to cartoons much too close to the television. I’ve even got the game open in the background as I write this to try and – hopelessly – purge the ear worm. I suspect I shall be mentally screaming ‘Rift Rangers’ for some time.

It sets the tone perfectly, as Rift Rangers is a homage to shows like Power Rangers. Though the rangers here seemed to have glued giant pyramids to their masks, which is an odd choice. This sense of style is paired with a nice core gameplay loop too, even if there really isn’t enough of it.

Rift Rangers - A Ranger capturing a brain surrounded by turrets

Mighty Stompin Rift Rangers

While the theme reminds me of my childhood, the actual game itself reminds me of being slightly older. Specifically, it reminds me of Newgrounds. No bad thing. The key is simplicity. Rift Rangers plonks you into a map, puts twenty minutes on the clock and opens the gates to a horde of enemies. Your little ranger has to survive long enough for the giant robot to come and squish everything. It very quickly gets overwhelming, because when I say horde I mean horde. After about ten minutes, just walking to the other side of the street requires careful dodging.

What’s more, the twist this time around is that we can’t attack directly, outside of dropping the odd timed bomb. Everything else is done by placing down turrets. It took me a little while to get used to it, I admit. I mashed around for the fire button but just kept dropping a little laser turret. I soon got into a groove though, and using the different turrets to set up killzones became a delight. There’s no getting comfy though, as you constantly have to capture ‘brains’, that will buff enemies if you don’t get rid of them. As the time ticks on, it becomes a challenge to carve a hole through the horde to reach them. There’s quite the pool of turrets too and experimenting with how they play off each other is great. Though that one that just puffs air at the baddies doesn’t really do the trick for me.

Refuse To Die!!

I was genuinely surprised by how addictive Rift Rangers is. Every time I thought I was done and went to quit, I found myself wanting to give it another shot. I think it’s because it presents itself so well. There’s the ‘sentai’ genre elements of course. I had to Google that. The term generally refers to superhero teams, which is where the Power Rangers comparison comes in. But aside from that, the simple, clean artstyle means you get to watch hordes crumble as you place your turrets. Upgrading a turret and watching it cut through the horde is immensely satisfying.

The issue with this genre though is repetition. Ultimately, every attempt is going to go along the same lines and Rift Rangers doesn’t do nearly enough to get away from it. There are only two maps for one thing. Admittedly, they play differently but you’ll have explored them both inside of twenty minutes. Only two bosses, as well. It tries to differentiate things by ramping up the difficulty after each run, but all it does is make enemies soak up more hits. There are Roguelite elements too, but these are just flat stat increases and don’t do anything to change up the next run. The only real changes are the skills of each ranger and what turrets you choose – though I often ended up using the same ones.

Rift Rangers - A horde of monsters close in on Blue ranger

Hordes Of Potential

Ultimately, my final feeling towards Rift Rangers is that it’s an excellent baseline. It has that Newgrounds style, where the art is a little janky but still looks good and the gameplay is so simple that it’s impossible not to get sucked in. The issue is that there just isn’t really enough of it. A few new maps would help, for one, and maybe switch up the bosses. Hell, I’d even swap out the roguelite elements for something that functionally changed each run. Maybe a perk system that souped up some turrets while locking you out of others, giving you bonuses for changing up your playstyle.

Still, even as it is, Rift Rangers is good fun to play and at the budget price it’s sitting at, you’ll likely get your money’s worth. I hope that Epic Story Interactive continue to give it some love in the future but if you’re looking for something to kill twenty minutes or so every now and then, you can certainly do worse than Rift Rangers. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be over here singing ‘Rift Rangers’ loudly to myself. Sigh.

A Closer Look

Setting up the NickWatch

You need to install the NickWatch app on your smartphone or tablet. Working through the steps was simple.

Tap on the Connect a NickWatch on the app and follow the steps, which includes scanning a unique QR code that will appear on the NickWatch. Then you have to enter your Subscription activation code to continue. If you don’t yet have one you have to buy one before you can continue.

You then need to enter the details of your child and your relationship, along with which wrist they will wear it on. Then just continue following the steps to complete the setup. At this point I was informed the watch wasn’t up to date but would update automatically overnight.

And that’s it – from there you can check on the status of the NickWatch, including its current location and battery status. You can also set reminders, check phsyical activity and much more, including setting SOS contacts that your child can use to contact you in an emergency.

Final Thoughts

Setting up the watch was fairly straightforward, the only issue was that when you needed to do something on the NickWatch screen itself it could be a little fiddly.

During the initial setup and configuration, the NickWatch checks to see if it is running the latest software. In the case of this review, the watch kept informing me that it was out of date and that it would update itself overnight. This is fine, but it would have been nice to have had the option to update there and there, if for no other reason that to both been running the latest version immediately but also to get rid of the out of date message.

The strap was easy to set up and according to my trusty 6 year old assistant was comfortable to wear.

Everything is customisable from the NickWatch app, so you can decide when you are child can and cannot use it – for example, you can disable functions during school time.

The two-way messaging app is really good for keeping in touch with your child, and them with you, and they can also press a button that sends an SOS message to you if they are worried about something. You can see where they are on app so you always feel that you are in control.

There are games and apps on the phone, including fitness apps and apps that can be used to create content. There is a 2MP camera on the front of the watch that can take pictures and there are even filters your child can add to the pictures. The pictures can then be stored in a cloud based storage account for you to monitor.

The games are a lot of fun and will keep your child amused.

And it’s can also be used to tell the time – so that’s an addition too!

If you are looking for a fun child-friendly smartwatch then you should definitely take a look at the NickWatch!

The NickWatch is available now priced around £119.95, although at the time of the review there was a special offer on for £79.95.

How to futureproof your online gaming business with these 3 trends

0

When you are managing an online gaming business, there is no shortage of challenges to keep on top of. While keeping up with the latest online gaming trends is essential, it’s equally vital to establish your business legally. If you’re based in the Sunshine State, consider this comprehensive guide on how to start an llc in florida, designed to help you structure your online gaming business effectively as you step into the future. You must keep your team productive and pointing in the right direction, your customers happy with the products you offer and the customer service you provide, as well as invest in an effective marketing strategy that attracts new clients to the company. However, there is another key responsibility that often goes overlooked. This is the ability to look towards the future and anticipate emerging trends that could disrupt the gaming industry and change the pecking order.

By getting a head start on understanding what these trends might look like, you will be able to prepare your business to potentially adapt to them and gain a first-mover advantage over your competitors. To help you get started with this process, here are three trends you should take into consideration:

Understand the importance of building your own mobile-first software and web design

One of the most vital elements of an online gaming business is the user experience. If your website, gaming software, or app is difficult to navigate, slow, ugly, and full of glitches, then no one is going to be buying from you or playing your games for very long. While you might argue that this is nothing new and is already the case, the reality is that many businesses get away with poor UX right now.

However, as a gaming business that might completely rely on software, you can’t let it rot. Therefore, you should aim to stay ahead of the curve by making sure every element of your software and website backend is up to scratch, including your microservices.

Harness the Power of Voice Search and Natural Language Processing (NLP)

Another key trend that is likely to gain further traction over the coming years is voice search and natural language processing. In fact, voice search and natural language processing are already transforming the way that society accesses information and interacts with technology. With the rise of voice-activated virtual assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant, your business needs to adapt its online presence to accommodate voice search queries. Optimizing your website or gaming application for voice search involves understanding user intent, utilizing long-tail keywords, and creating content that answers specific questions. What’s more, incorporating NLP capabilities into your online business enables natural language understanding and processing, allowing for more personalized interactions and enhanced customer experiences. By embracing voice search and NLP, you can futureproof your gaming business by staying relevant in the era of conversational interfaces and voice-activated technologies.

Integrate cryptocurrency into your payment channels

Lastly, you should look towards cryptocurrency as a more mainstream form of currency. While no one knows how successful crypto will ultimately become, it is already being embraced as a form of online tokenization, giving consumers a way of transferring value from a fiat currency to another form of online value, such as gaming tokens or NFTs. Therefore, you should get ahead of the curve and consider integrating crypto into your payment channels.

Review: Trust Trezo set

0

I’m a sucker for eco-friendly goods. Consequently, when Trust offered me its Trust Trezo set to review, I couldn’t resist. This fully wireless setup comprises a silent touch mouse and keyboard. As such, this is the perfect product for anyone that desires a silent working environment.

Made from 85% recycled materials and delivered in a sustainable cardboard box. This is as environmentally friendly as they come. Moreover, the spill-resistant feature and black livery ensure that it is robust and professional to look at. On top of this, the plug-and-play setup is simple to master, so you waste none of your precious time.

What’s in the box of the Trust Trezo set?

  • The simple packaging is striking but not overbearing. With basic imagery and key information, it does just enough to capture your attention. Unfortunately, though, it’s somewhat flimsy and mine was damaged in the post. Luckily, the contents are well packaged, so it matters not.
  • The keyboard and mouse and pleasant to look at and noticeably light. What’s more, the mouse has a DPI button to increase cursor speed. Additionally, the keyboard can be adjusted using the 3 phase support legs.
  • A USB extender is provided to optimise your connection.
  • A quick start guide helps you to understand the fundamentals.

Technical aspects.

Though the Trust Trezo set can be used for gaming. It is, however, aimed primarily at the work and education market. As such, I expect this type of device to be comfortable to use, hard-wearing, and easy to set up. Furthermore, a great battery life is a must. Thankfully, the Trust Trezo set ticks each of these boxes.

The full-sized keyboard can be adjusted to suit your needs. Whether you like a lay-flat position, mid-rise, or fully extended, you can adjust the support legs accordingly. This was great as it stays away from the one size fits all mentality. Alongside this, the travel distance for each keystroke was fantastic. The soft-touch keys were responsive but silent to use. Subsequently, you can type away for hours and not disturb your neighbours or work colleagues.

Another fantastic feature was the durable shell. This splash-resistant case was easy to clean and appears robust and hard-wearing. Further still, it is lightweight and the wireless approach ensures a clean workspace. The mouse is afforded the same compliments. This excellent device is designed to be ambidextrous, and this was fantastic! As such, Trust has created an inclusive product.

Finally, the battery life is spectacular. Though I was disappointed to see AA batteries, I was amazed by how long they last. You’ll enjoy up to 48 months of working time with the keyboard and 12 months for the mouse. This was mind-blowingly good and something that I didn’t expect.

Design features.

The Trust Trezo set is predominantly a work tool. However, the excellent media shortcut buttons ensure that it’s not all work and no play. Positioned at the top of the keyboard, you can play your favourite songs or pause media at the touch of a button. This was great, especially when you consider its affordable price point.

The mouse gets in on the action with its DPI adjustable switch. Consequently, if you do wish to game with this set, you can keep up with ease. Moreover, the silent click feature will keep your teammates happy as the clatter of mechanical devices can drive everyone insane.

This refined PC accessory keeps your desk tidy as it has no wires and only one USB dongle. This was phenomenal, as you didn’t have to find multiple ports to connect to each device and it was easy to set up. Simply insert the batteries, plug in the dongle, and switch on the accessories. This is the extent of the plug-and-play approach and you’ll be up and running in no time at all.

Is the Trust Trezo set worth it?

There are more advanced and stylish keyboards available. However, they cost a lot more money and they lack an eco-friendly nature. Furthermore, the Trust Trezo set is unbelievably easy to set up and use. Accordingly, if you want an affordable PC accessory that won’t disturb your kids, partner, neighbours, or work colleagues, then this is the set for you. Additionally, its lack of RGB lighting and other whacky features makes this the perfect professional choice.

Alongside this, you must consider the brilliant build quality, the splash-resistant finish and the inclusive nature of the mouse. As such, I think this is great value for money and something that won’t disappoint you. Subsequently, I liked what I saw and I recommend that you buy it here

Review: Farworld Pioneers

Farworld Pioneers is a game I’ve been watching for a while. Consequently, when it was announced for the Xbox Series X, I was giddy with excitement. If you then add in the incredible multiplayer action and the brilliant Terraria and Rimworld-inspired gameplay, it made me impatient beyond belief. Well, after hours of challenging gameplay and plenty of mishaps and death, I’m now ready to give you my thoughts.

Developed by Igloosoft and published by tinyBuild, this is a survival simulation experience. Moreover, this 2D pixelated adventure title is cruel, unfair, and often rage-inducing. However, it is this tough gameplay that makes it extremely rewarding and undeniably tough to put down. Yes, there are some issues regarding the control system, and the tutorial should have been better, but trial and error is your friend and this mitigates those problems.

Farworld Pioneers lets you create your own story.

Like Rimworld, you are free to create your own destiny! As such, once you crash land on the opening planet, you are free to do as you wish. Therefore, this can be extremely exhilarating, but it is also a little terrifying. With minimal guidance and a list of life-saving tasks to complete, it can be overwhelming. However, if you take your time and move slowly, you will soon get the hang of every element.

Just like in Terraria, you must move through a 2D world filled with resources, enemies, and an ever-changing weather front. Moreover, the strange planet has friendly and hostile inhabitants that can make your life easier or much harder. Furthermore, you must defend your base, kill evil creatures, and keep your colony happy. Accordingly, this is no mean feat, and you must think logically and methodically if you wish to keep on top of it all.

Mining is a key gameplay mechanic.
Get those resources by digging through the world.

So much to see and do.

I was blown away by the sheer volume of content and the complexity of the core mechanics. On top of this, the ever-changing environment and the fear of attack will keep you on your toes. As such, you must create a base that protects you and keeps your people happy and safe. Whether you build above ground and reinforce your walls and doors, or you head underground and carve out a cave, they both have their pros and cons.

What you must get to grips with is the use of your settlers. These helpful individuals can do a vast number of tasks that make your life much easier. They will mine, cut trees, gather resources, farm, and attack unwanted individuals and creatures. Furthermore, they will move resources to stockpiles, complete your research, and plenty of other mindless jobs. Accordingly, you are free to create new structures, explore the world, or tackle some of the end-game bosses.

Fighting and exploration.

Farworld Pioneers is a phenomenal base-builder and people management sim. However, where it excels is the fighting, exploration, and tech aspects. You must battle wave after wave of asshat raiders! These annoying turds stop at nothing to destroy you, your people, and your base. Yet, if you develop your equipment, build some armour, and create a plan, they will be blown away.

Alongside this, you are free to explore however you wish. Furthermore, once you progress enough, you can leave the opening world behind and move to another planet. This end-game experience makes it stand out from its peers. Furthermore, it enhances both the replay value and the longevity. The same can be said for the cruel boss battles. Without giving anything away, these unfair encounters will test your patience and push you to the limits.

Kaboom! Blow up those defences.
Kaboom!

Multiplayer action.

I loved and hated the multiplayer action in equal measure. With up to 32 players in one lobby, it was a troll’s playground! No matter how much you tried, PvP was the go-to option. Accordingly, you’d be blown out of the water before you even got a chance to get established. However, this hardship was equally amusing. Whenever you got one up on your cruel raiding counterparts, it felt unbelievably rewarding.

Alternatively, if you find a lobby that is peaceful and willing to work towards an end goal, it can be spectacularly enjoyable. If every cog in the machine is working together, the research and development aspects fly along. Moreover, your base becomes a monstrous spectacle that is impressive and useful in equal measure.

Farworld Pioneers has some issues.

Unfortunately, this simple 2D pixelated affair doesn’t run all that well. If the gameplay is saving or there are too many assets on the screen, the frame rate drops through the floor. Additionally, the animation can stutter and you get caught in the scenery repeatedly. However, with these massive issues to one side, I liked the varied backdrops and the easy-to-identify resources. What’s more, the UI is great even though there were some minor problems here as well.

The audio fared much better. The dramatic soundtrack works perfectly with the unfolding action. During dangerous encounters, the hard-hitting music creates energy while keeping you on your toes. Alternatively, slower moments are matched with a sombre and relaxing selection of songs. The music is complemented by the basic but workable sound effects. Whether it was the shot of your gun, the clunk of your sword, or the thud of an axe, it worked extremely well.

This base is massive.
Check out that massive base.

Controls are not this game’s forte.

The controls are not good at all. Disappointingly, it feels clunky and cumbersome no matter what you try. What’s more, there are issues with the building menus and selecting your settlers is not that easy. Consequently, it is unnecessarily frustrating and during difficult moments, you will die repeatedly as the controls are not good enough.

If you can put up with the poor control setup, you’ll experience a game full of longevity and replay value. Thanks to the incredible multiplayer mode and the exceptional end-game options, you will keep returning for more. Even though the controls will make you scream, it is remarkably addictive, and I struggled to put it down.

Farworld Pioneers is a popular game,if you’re a fan of this game, you can customize your keychain with its name at KeyChains Co.,simply choose the name of the game and the style you prefer, and you’ll have a personalized keychain that you can carry around with you. This way, you can easily show off your favorite game to others and even use it as a conversation starter. Small accessories like keychains can make a big difference in expressing your personality and interests, so don’t hesitate to get one for yourself today.

Farworld Pioneers could be exceptional.

Despite its shortcomings, I loved my time with Farworld Pioneers. Whether you played using the peaceful mode or you accepted the hardcore challenge, it was fascinating. Yes, it has its shortcomings, but I think that these will be patched out in the near future. Available as part of the Game Pass subscription, this is a title that you shouldn’t miss. However, if you don’t subscribe, it is great value for money as it’ll keep you playing for hours. Accordingly, I loved it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you escape the planet and start again? Work as a team, kill your opponents and thrive where others fail.

Review: Tin Hearts

Tin Hearts will capture your imagination and attention. This beautifully touching endeavour starts as a slow burner. However, it soon becomes a heart-warming and captivating title that is tough to put down and instantly memorable. Thanks to its whimsy, yet loving story, and its fantastic puzzle mechanics, this is a gem of an indie game.

Developed by Rogue Sun Ltd., and published by Wired Productions Ltd, this is a puzzle adventure title. What’s more, it has a phenomenal story, some incredible inventions, and plenty of challenging problems to overcome. As such, it will test your resolve while making you grin from ear to ear.

Tin Hearts demands that you get the toy soldiers to the exit.
Get those toy soldiers to the exit.

Tin Hearts: a story of the brilliance behind the toys.

Tin Hearts’ core gameplay focuses on excellent toys and their mischievous ways. Yet, it is the story of the inventor behind these toys that grabs your attention. This heartfelt tale highlights the sacrifices a parent will make and the love that they feel for their children. Moreover, the stunning setting and the charming plot will make you feel warm inside.

You are Albert J. Butterworth, a genius inventor of the Victorian era. Your creations are the talk of the town, and famous toy companies wish you to join their ranks. However, you build these inventions as a sign of love for your daughter. As such, you are not interested in money or the advances of your peers. Instead, you wish to succeed in making your child happy.

The story is warming and enjoyable to observe. Furthermore, every moment plays out through surreal cutscenes. These dreamy moments highlight the prominent experiences of father and daughter. What’s more, whenever you touch upon a letter or a note, a brilliantly acted piece of narration progresses the story while highlighting any poignant information.

Drip-fed mechanics.

Puzzle titles can become overwhelming and uncomfortable to play. This impacts the story and normally puts people off. Thankfully, Tin Hearts is different! With drip-fed mechanics and special abilities, you learn the fundamentals at a gradual pace. Alongside this, any new elements are coupled up with a simple tutorial. Accordingly, you never feel out of your depth, no matter the size of the puzzle you face.

With 50+ stages that expand and become increasingly convoluted, you must stay alert if you wish to succeed. The aim of the game is simple, however. Albert’s toy soldiers have a life of their own and, by opening their toy box, they become animated. These metal toys walk in a straight line and will only deviate if an obstacle is placed in their path. This key concept forms the backbone of every puzzle. Subsequently, you are expected to place blocks to form new paths and get the toys to the exit.

This sounds simple, right? Well, once you get the hang of it, it is straightforward. But at first, it can be complicated to understand what you must do. You’ll be asked to pick up and move specific blocks with special icons on them. These blocks can only be placed at certain locations, so you can’t go wrong. Yet, things soon get harder when you have unmarked blocks or limited tools at hand. When this happens, you must think logically and adjust each block accordingly.

Grab that train and complete the puzzle.
Move the train and solve the problem.

Special powers.

On top of the path-altering blocks, you learn an array of special powers. Whether you speed up or pause time, move toy trains, adjust the trajectory of each drum, or walk around the room, they add a new layer to the action. These abilities make every puzzle more complicated while demanding that you think outside of the box.

Alongside this, you’ll enjoy some environmental elements that are in keeping with the theme. The naughty Jack in a Box loves to ruin your day. Consequently, if you walk past him, he’ll grab every soldier and you can’t complete the level. Therefore, you’ll have to plan an alternative route if you wish to succeed.

These cheeky elements will drive you mad whilst making you chuckle. Additionally, they demand that you think outside of the box and look for a different solution. This was great, as it tested your ability to be flexible as well as your logical mindset.

Tin Hearts looks fantastic.

The puzzle elements and brilliant inventions were great. Yet, the visuals were much more impressive. I adored the colourful levels and the excellent stage design. Whether you were navigating a tight corridor or hovering above the ground in a hot-air balloon, it was fantastic. Alongside this, the surreal storytelling was touching and tastefully done. If I was to find fault, though, I’d say the handling of the bricks could have been smoother. Occasionally, you’d get stuck under the scenery and this was annoying. Yet, this is a minor thing and doesn’t taint the experience too much.

The audio is equally amazing. Whether it was the pleasant acting, the fun sound effects, or the stunning soundtrack, it all works perfectly. The easy-listening music complements the slow action. Whereas the abrupt sound effects add some drama to an otherwise laid-back audio experience.

Avoid the obstacles and hit the drum.
Navigate the table and leap off the drum.

The controls could have been more intuitive.

I’d imagine that Tin Hearts would work perfectly with a mouse and keyboard. However, the controller layout isn’t as intuitive as I’d have liked. As such, the early levels take some getting used to as you make repeated errors. Yet, once you are familiar with the fundamentals, and you have nailed each new skill, you’ll enjoy the increasingly challenging puzzles that you face.

I was surprised by how much replay value there was. Furthermore, its captivating ways made it tough to put down. Alongside this, many of the levels can be completed in different ways and there are hidden Easter eggs to be found. Subsequently, there are many reasons to return, especially if you wish to return every toy soldier to the study.

Tin Hearts is an instant classic.

Despite my issues with the controls, I have to say that Tin Hearts is an instant classic! The exceptional story and the excellent visuals make this a memorable experience. What’s more, the puzzles aren’t easy and the secrets keep you coming back for more. Don’t forget that the poignant soundtrack is breathtaking and unique. Accordingly, I adore this game and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you save every toy soldier? Make new paths, find the secrets, and learn about Albert and his family.

Gamers Aren’t Thinking Enough About Vision Health — Here’s Why They Should

Source : Pixels.com

While gaming can be a source of entertainment and a fun hobby, it has also been linked to concerns about prolonged screen time and vision problems. The average person spends over 8 hours in front of screens, with more than half taking screen breaks of only 15 minutes or less. The gamers surveyed also reported experiencing various eye-related symptoms, such as eye strain (48%), headaches (36%), dry eyes (35%), and blurred vision (31%). However, only 46% prioritize taking a comprehensive eye exam yearly.

Since these symptoms can affect gamers’ eye health and overall well-being if left unaddressed, this article will tackle the vision-related risks of gaming and ways for gamers to manage these risks and practice better eye care.

How gaming can harm your vision

Gaming can be visually demanding regardless of which device you use to play games. A 2020 study published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health explains that when the eyes are exposed to digital screens for extended periods, they constantly change focus and eventually become fatigued. Even a 60-minute period of uninterrupted screen use can worsen the eye’s ability to focus and adjust. This reduces the pupil’s maximum adaptability, speed, range, and overall reflex, which can develop into blurred vision at close range or worsen pre-existing vision problems like myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism.

Meanwhile, reduced blinking frequency leads to dry eyes, which are considered a symptom of digital eye strain (DES) or computer vision syndrome. Dry eyes are typically associated with other DES symptoms like irritation, burning sensation, discomfort, and photosensitivity. Lastly, non-ergonomic practices like playing on low-illumination screens and sitting with poor posture can exacerbate eye fatigue with other physical symptoms like neck pain, muscle aches, and tension headaches.

How gamers can level up their eye care

Use eyewear with protective features

When you get your annual eye checkup, consider getting eyewear with features that help optimize both your gaming experience and vision health. Many online retailers offer a range of glasses made specifically for gamers in terms of comfort and vision protection. For instance, the top-selling brand Oakley has a selection of headset-compatible frames. These frames can then be paired with Oakley Prizm lens technology for magnification properties and an anti-reflective coating, which help reduce squinting and eye fatigue from high-contrast screens.

If you already wear eyeglasses, you can upgrade your lenses to filter blue light. Since the blue light emitted by digital screens has been found to strain the eyes, eyewear brand Glasses Direct focuses specifically on blue light glasses for gamers. They come with blue light-blocking lenses, a protective lens feature that helps you focus easier, avoid dry eyes, and lower the eyesight damage you get from prolonged screen exposure while gaming.

Take more screen breaks throughout the day

On top of gradually reducing your overall screen time, it’s advisable to incorporate regular breaks into your gaming habits. You can try following the 20-20-20 rule in between matches, which recommends looking away from the screen every 20 minutes and focusing on an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. One of the strategies that can help you enforce this rule is setting an alarm or reminder on the device you’re playing on.

Make sure that your breaks also involve actually getting up and walking away from your screen. Drink a glass of water since hydration is important for eye health. You can also do other things that simply get you moving to avoid straining not just your eyes but your muscles, too. These include walking around the room, stretching your arms and legs, and stepping outside for fresh air.

No matter what games you play or how skilled of a gamer you are, eye care should be a part of your gaming lifestyle. It is better to prevent and/or manage eye-related symptoms while you still can — before they get worse and affect not just your gaming experience but also your overall quality of life.

Tips to Regain Control with Responsible Gambling

0

Gambling is all fun and rewarding until you develop the addiction. In modern society, the easy availability of online platforms has made gambling more attractive. Players enjoy and make money online playing these games. The issue begins when you lose control. There are tons of useful resources and tools to help with gambling addiction.

Ignoring the addiction at the very start is the worst mistake most players make. Gambling is a form of entertainment, and there is nothing wrong with it. Is it bad or good for you? The answer depends upon your approach to gambling. Online gambling is safer than land-based casinos because sites ensure responsible gambling practices, so if you want to play roulette, for example, and you want to make sure you do it safely, finding a good online casino that will help, not hinder you, is the best thing you can do.

Who is a Gambling Addict?

No one would ever agree to be an addict. We all tend to deny when someone points out the issue. Not every gambler or online casino player has a gambling addiction. Anyone who cannot control his urge to gamble beyond his resources is an addict. They keep pushing even after losing lots of their funds.

Without considering the consequences, such people keep wasting their money. Soon, they realize they have lost funds and their emotional control. Even at that stage, gambling addiction can be cured. This is a bad habit that will influence all areas of your life. Gambling addicts will face issues with their personal and professional life. Gamblers are seen losing their jobs and homes due to poor control of their urges.

How to know if someone is an addict?

Video games, movies, or other forms of entertainment can also be addictive. Anything that you overdo will make you an addict. When your mind is always tangled with gambling, your personal life will take a hit. Here are some indicators that might help you to determine if someone has a gambling addiction:

  • Always in need of money
  • Spending significant time at online casinos
  • Having massive debts
  • Does not pay bills on time
  • Seems stressed and frustrated
  • Failing to manage personal relationships and family matters
  • Selling household items for entertainment purposes

There are many other hidden and obvious factors that point out gambling addiction. Instead of isolating these individuals, you need to help them. There are organizations that help gamblers with addiction. Ignoring the signs in you or your loved ones can be a mistake.

What is Responsible Gambling?

Before going into the details of the topic, understanding the basics of responsible gambling is important. Due to increasing gambling problems, authorities decided to take some actions. There is no pact definition of this term. There are different strategies and policies that ensure responsible gambling.

Not only players but the casino operators also have to follow these standards for a safe environment. These practices and policies present gambling as a form of entertainment. Financial gains and rewards are the sub-product of gambling. Viewing online gambling as a way to make money is the worst mistake.

Casinos also need to offer realistic offers. To good offers also unrealistic expectations. There are different casinos that offer 7 euro to new users. Members will rethink their decision before making a deposit. If it was 500 euro, millions of users would jump into gambling without a second thought.

How to Regain Control to get rid of Gambling Addiction?

If things do not go as planned, you don’t need to lose hope. This is a serious issue that can be prevented with some effective steps. Family members, friends, and other members of society should encourage addicts in their efforts. Here are some tips if you want to regain control.

Acknowledge the Damage

Refusing to admit the issue will make the situation even worse for you. The very first step to regaining control is to admit that gambling habits are out of your control. Being honest with you is the only way to be mentally prepared for the next steps.

Set Restrictions

No one can get rid of any addiction overnight. That’s now how things work in real life. The whole process of regaining control will take some time. Now is the time to reduce gambling activities. Playing a few games at online casinos is fine. Once you have hit the limit for the day, quit the site and relax.

Set a Budget

Getting your finance back on track is the most important goal of this entire struggle. Gamblers need to understand bankroll management. Once you have decided a budget for online casino games, stick to it. Never bet more than your set budget.

Take Breaks

Other hobbies can help you to take your mind off gambling. There are countless other activities that can offer entertainment. There is no point in gambling regularly when you are trying to quit it. Other activities will help you to create a balance in your personal and family life.

Don’t Chase Losses

If you have lost money at online casinos, admit it is a cost of entertainment. No one can win all the time. If you keep betting to win back that lost amount, you will keep losing. Skip the game for the day and try a new game with a new mindset the next day.

Help the Gambling Addicts

These addicts are our friends, colleagues, neighbors, and family members. Abandoning them will do no good to them or you. Instead of isolating them, listen to them and try to convince them to quit bad habits. There are different authorities and online resources to make people gambling aware

  • Gam-Anon
  • National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG)
  • Gamblers Anonymous (GA)
  • Gambling Therapy
  • Gambling Help Online (Australia)
  • Gambling Commission (UK)
  • Responsible Gambling Council (RGC)

These official resources will help with the recovery.

Conclusion

These little efforts make a big difference when we need long-term results. Even if you are not comfortable sharing issues with loved ones or family members, there are online communities. Gamblers can seek professional help online. No one will judge you, and instead of worrying about society, pay attention to your personal matters. Playing at legit casinos from the very start can also help to prevent the issues altogether.

Review: Mia and the Dragon Princess

Mia and the Dragon Princess demonstrates how good the FMV genre can be. Furthermore, its dramatic plot and witty moments create a lighthearted and unforgettable experience. As such, this will entertain you from beginning to end. The Quarry, Who Pressed Mute on Uncle Marcus?, and Not for Broadcast were great. However, Mia and the Dragon Princess caught my attention immediately.

Developed by Dead Pixel Productions, Good Gate Media, and Wales Interactive and published by the latter, this is an FMV title. What’s more, it takes you on an action-packed adventure full of betrayal, lies, and secrets. Accordingly, there are many twists and turns as you unravel the mystery of the female protagonist.

Mia and the Dragon Princess tells a silly but captivating story.

I love an absurd plot and thankfully, Mia and the Dragon Princess is as crazy as they come. With interesting characters, strange locations, and a fantasy storyline, you’ll take every poignant moment with a pinch of salt. However, even though the plot is silly, I couldn’t put down this captivating adventure.

You play the part of Mia, a barmaid that is down on her luck. She wants to travel the world, but cannot escape from her surrogate family. Consequently, she feels obliged to help her boss when the going gets tough. Yet, to make matters worse, a mysterious woman stumbles into her life. Unable to speak English, the pair must work together as best they can. Unbeknownst to Mia, Mashanda has a secretive past that is about to catch up with her.

A secret woman with a mysterious background.
She doesn’t trust anyone.

Plenty of decisions, but no QTEs.

Some people hate the voyeuristic nature of this genre. I, on the other hand, adore the cinematic gameplay and the split-second decisions. This title takes that idea to the extreme, as there are plenty of key moments that require your intervention. Moreover, each choice has serious ramifications for yourself and those around you. Yet, if you get things right, you’ll escape your terrible fate and potentially get rich in the process.

Though there are plenty of game-changing decisions, there isn’t a QTE in sight. This approach was extremely bizarre, as many of its peers are laced with challenging moments. Furthermore, this decision will enhance the voyeuristic nature of the game and enrage the haters further still. Despite this missing mechanic, the action is still tense and the dramatic plot thrives as a consequence. What’s more, the short timeframe between question and answer puts you under extreme pressure.

You’ll be asked to help Mashanda or find an escape route. Alternatively, you may try to solve a puzzle or protect a friend from danger. Whatever you decide, you must live with the outcome. Sadly, many of the options lead to devastating results, so be prepared for some uncomfortable and unfair cinematic.

The villain wants to calm things down...allegedly.
Calm yourself down mister!

Mia and the Dragon Princess suffers some hiccups.

FMV titles are often seamless in their presentation. Disappointingly, Mia and the Dragon Princess isn’t as polished. Not only are there some minor continuity issues, but there are also distinct breaks in the cinematic. Whenever you are asked to decide your path, the game takes a lifetime to progress. This was annoying as it broke up the immersive nature of the action.

Besides this issue, I adored the cartoon art style that opens the story. Furthermore, the filming and locations are of a good standard. Subsequently, the developers should be applauded for the varied backdrops and excellent casting.

The cinematic was complemented by excellent audio and decent acting. Though the actors won’t win any awards for their performances, I enjoyed every moment. Moreover, there was a pleasant blend of clichéd characters as well as some genuinely amusing moments. Alongside this, the music enhanced both the atmosphere and the drama and the sound effects were realistic and well-delivered.

The female protagonist is in the middle of a fight.
It is fighting time.

Loads of replay value.

Other than a rapid choice of two answers, you have little else to worry about. As such, the control setup is understandably simple and easy to understand. Yet, the developers have done a great job with their UI. The stripped-back interface is clean, and each option is clearly highlighted before you choose. Accordingly, you won’t make any unnecessary mistakes.

There are so many twists and turns that it can be hard to keep up. Luckily, though, there is a story chart that highlights your previous journey. Therefore, when you revisit the game, you can select a new route without treading over old ground. My only complaint is that there is no way to skip ahead. Subsequently, you may have to watch a core scene multiple times if you want to experience every ending.

Mia and the Dragon Princess is a short but wonderful title.

Mia and the Dragon Princess is one of the shorter FMV games I’ve played. However, this was good, as it never outstays its welcome. Additionally, it mitigates the repetitive nature of the key scenes. On top of this, the captivating story may be absurd, but the interesting dialogue and often cruel decisions keep you playing. Accordingly, I loved this title despite its lack of QTEs and its short playtime. Therefore, I recommend that you buy it here! Can you help a stranger and fulfil your dreams? Be kind, solve the problems, and potentially get rich as a consequence.

Capcom… It’s Time to Bring Back Lost Planet.

0

Back in 2007, I would play my Brother’s Xbox 360 while he was at work. One of the games he had downloaded was a demo for some game called Lost Planet. I played it, and my young mind was blown. Unfortunately, it’s a franchise that has been lost through time. But with Capcom’s recent hot streak combined with having one of the best game engines in the industry, Capcom… It’s time to bring back Lost Planet

Lost Planet is… Lost

Lost Planet was a third-person-shooter published by Capcom with legendary industry talent such as Keiji Inafune attached to the project. In the game you play as Wayne Holden, as you attempt to take down NEVEC and the alien race known as the Akrid, in hopes of freeing the human race and to colonize the planet E.D.N. lll.

When I played the demo back in 2007, and quite frankly, I couldn’t believe that it was real. Up until that point, I mostly played sports games and platformers, and I had never experienced something as real as Lost Planet. As I walked in knee deep snow, my character struggled. The snow itself stuck to his pants. I would go over to the snowy cliff and grapple hook onto the ledge, then proceed to pull myself up.

That demo kind of became a tool for my young imagination as I’d pretend I was some action hero, caught in a monstrous blizzard, having to fight my way out.

It was the kind of game that took your breath away, but yet left so much on the table. Capcom abandoned the franchise after Lost Planet 3 in 2013, but I’m here to say that It’s time for Capcom to Bring the franchise back.

RE Engine & Lost Planet

Since 2017, Capcom has been on an undeniable hot streak. Resident Evil 7 brought the series back to it’s roots while introducing the world to their new engine called RE Engine. Since then, Capcom has launched Devil May Cry 5, Remakes of Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4, Monster Hunter: World, and the more recent Street Fighter 6. All of these games have been met with critical acclaim and right now, Capcom can do no wrong.

With a powerful engine, talented devs, and a surplus of cash, it’s time to bring back some dormant franchises. We’re already seeing Capcom finally give fans a sequel to 2012’s Dragon’s Dogma, which should launch in the next year or two. But in my opinion, the franchise most primed for a reboot is Lost Planet.

There’s just so much potential for that world and lore to be expanded and made more visceral with today’s cutting edge graphics.

My Pitch for a Lost Planet Reboot

Time to flex my creative muscles for a bit. It’s my dream to work in the games industry as a creative director anyway, so let me write an open letter to Capcom myself. Capcom, I’ll direct the Lost Planet Reboot for you, and here’s how I’d do it.

Firstly, It would be a full reboot of the series. New timeline, new characters, new setting. We would stay faithful to some landmarks from the first game of course, like for instance, snow would be a major factor. Secondly, to give Capcom something unique that they don’t already have, this would be an action adventure style game, drawing inspiration from games such as Uncharted from Naughty Dog. You play as a young soldier, who’s apart of a team sent to this icy planet to mine for resources. Unknowingly, your team unearths an ancient alien race, living below the icy earth. Traversal would be a major emphasis using tools such as your grapple hook from the first game.

As you progress in the story, you uncover dark secrets your government kept from you about what this planet used to be, why it was abandoned, and what they didn’t want you finding out, hence the title… Lost Planet.

Closing

Capcom, if you’re reading this, send me a message and we’ll get started on this Lost Planet Reboot : ).

Lost Planet deserves to come back. I believe it’s something different from all of Capcom’s IP and it can be made into so much more than it was before. The potential is there, it just needs to be unlocked.

Review: Stranded: Alien Dawn

Surviving on Earth is a tough ask. However, this is nothing compared to life on an alien planet. Stranded: Alien Dawn replicates this scenario in its full-on and detailed survival simulation mechanics. Moreover, you must work your magic if you are to keep everyone alive and happy. As such, this brutal game will test you throughout.

Developed by Haemimont Games and published by Frontier Developments, this is a survival sim experience. What’s more, there are base-building mechanics, plenty of fights to win, and an array of complex scenarios that must be dealt with. Accordingly, this will keep you on your toes as you attempt to spin many plates at once.

The base has evolved from a small settlement to a large base.
The base is evolving nicely.

Stranded: Alien Dawn has some phenomenal scenarios.

If you’ve played Rimworld, you’ll be familiar with the story layout and the core mechanics. If not, you’ll enjoy a lengthy but well-constructed tutorial that gets you up to speed. Each unique mission demands a different approach. Whether it is a lack of resources, an unhappy band of survivors, or tougher-than-normal aliens, you’ll have to react to the ever-changing gameplay.

You may choose from 2 planets and an array of moons. Each location has its pros and cons, and you must understand the dangers before you build your settlement. Furthermore, each objective begins with a band of uniquely talented survivors. These individuals must work together to understand their surroundings and build a new community. If they can do this, they’ll thrive while fighting off any brutal alien scum.

A rewarding experience.

Like its peers, Stranded: Alien Dawn is a content-packed monster. What’s more, it is an excellent port from PC and will impress the most belligerent of fans. However, you may worry that the depth and sheer scale of gameplay will be overbearing. Well, thankfully, it is not. With a brilliant UI and a well-conceived timer system, you play at your pace.

No matter which scenario you pick, the core gameplay is the same. Effectively, you must manage an array of character stats whilst exploring a massive world. Furthermore, you are expected to create a rudimentary settlement that evolves as you learn new technologies and skills. On top of this, you are responsible for your food, comfort, and heat.

The survivors have researched robotic defences.
Teach those pesky aliens a lesson.

It’s a dangerous world.

If hypothermia, injuries or starvation don’t kill you, then the aliens will. Additionally, an array of environmental events test your survival skills and resolve! At first, you’ll use melee weapons to succeed. However, as you research your surroundings, you learn to upgrade your arsenal, improve your skills, and build automated defences.

Gathering resources or searching for food is equally dangerous. Cuts can become infected, mental health will deteriorate, or those pesky aliens will attack you. Therefore, it is essential to focus on farming and other life-extending resources.

Balancing the day-to-day tasks with game-progressing evolution isn’t as challenging as you’d think. The excellent work priority system and fantastic character skill screen allow you to select the right survivor for each task. Accordingly, as long as you plan ahead, you should have a smooth experience.

Stranded: Alien Dawn looks great.

I didn’t have high expectations regarding the graphics. However, the developers have created an immersive world that is varied and stunning to look at. Moreover, it is nicely detailed and each world and moon has its own characteristics. Alongside this, the brilliant UI and smooth animation enhance the action further still.

A doomed existence requires a melancholy and sombre soundtrack. Luckily, the atmospheric music complements every scenario. Alongside this, the cruel sounds of the aliens and the incredible ever-changing weather were amazing to listen to.

Jump in your hot air balloon and fly above the alien world.
Could you imagine flying above an alien world?

Surprisingly good controls.

PC ports are usually horrendous on console. Trying to fit in every keyboard command can be a tricky task. Luckily, though, the developers have implemented an intelligent UI and controller layout. As such, once you complete the lengthy tutorial, you’ll comfortably battle every hostile alien while building a stunning futuristic settlement.

Stranded: Alien Dawn will keep you playing for hours! Each location has unique characteristics that must be understood and overcome. Additionally, you must balance progression with happiness and comfort. Subsequently, you cannot bum-rush the game and completing each objective isn’t easy. Furthermore, you must consider the constant alien threat.

Stranded: Alien Dawn is a fantastic example of the genre.

This genre is peppered with incredible titles. Luckily, Stranded: Alien Dawn is up there with the best of them. With intuitive controls, a brilliant research tree, amazing environmental events, and aggressive aliens, it ticks many boxes. On top of this, it is entertaining to keep your survivors happy whilst trying to complete every objective. My only complaint is the steep learning curve and the time sink it created. Consequently, this isn’t a casual title, as it requires your full attention. Yet, it is this depth that makes it great and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you begin again and survive a harsh new world? Study your surroundings, gather resources, and stay alive for as long as possible.
