Review: Puzzle Bobble Everybubble!

The Nintendo Switch is home to an ever-growing list of enjoyable multiplayer games. Further adding to that list is the recently released Puzzle Bobble Everybubble! which is developed by Taito and published by United Games Entertainment GmbH. Puzzle Bobble Everybubble! is a fantastic entry in the Puzzle Bobble franchise that features a bright bubbly soundtrack, cutesy graphics, and addicting puzzle gameplay. This title also features a lot of content including a story mode. However, the story mode forces you to listen to the character’s annoying voices throughout the lackluster tale it tries to tell.

Bubbles everywhere

As stated before, Puzzle Bobble Everybubble!’s story is underwhelming. The story follows the tale of Bub, Bob, Peb, and Pab after discovering that the whole of their homeland, Rainbow Island, has been covered in bubbles. Only the aforementioned bubble-blowing dragons will be able to eliminate the bubbles and figure out why the island is covered in bubbles. While I wasn’t expecting a complex narrative, the interactions between characters left much to be desired. Thankfully, the meta jokes and humor in some of the dialogue kept me from being completely bored with the story. Unfortunately, the plot is dull even with its occasional witty humor. While the story may not be the best the rest of the game is simply a treat to experience.

Bubble’s of all different colors

Puzzle Bobble Everybubble! features very enjoyable gameplay with lots of different modes. The basic gameplay is simple. Connect three or more bubbles of the same color to pop them. If you burst bubbles that are holding other bubbles up, those bubbles will fall off and burst as well. While seemingly simple, the gameplay has a lot of depth with its various power-ups, changing the way you think about the levels. You can even save the power-ups for later by having them drop on the ground. All of this combines into a satisfying and addicting gameplay experience. This is enhanced by the various modes on offer, including, Story, Versus, and Puzzle Bobble vs Space Invaders.

Playing Story mode with friends

Story mode

Story mode has you playing through the story of the game, going to different areas to clear all the bubbles. In each area, there are 15 levels, each of them being a mini puzzle. These puzzles may task you with bursting all the bubbles within a time limit or helping the creatures stuck inside the bubbles before the whole puzzle squishes you. While easy at first, these levels can become quite challenging and may take several attempts for even a one-star ranking. Each of the levels has a possible ranking out of three stars, which you can earn based on how quickly you complete each one. By getting three stars on every level in an area you unlock extra stages, giving you the incentive to master each level. Overall, the story mode is a great mode with lots of content to play through and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Versus

Versus mode is where you can go head-to-head locally or online. Similar to Puyo Puyo and Tetris 99 you can send grey bubbles to your opponent’s field by clearing your bubbles. A grey bubble will change to the color bubble it is hit with so you can use the grey bubbles to send a large amount of bubbles to your opponent. Bubbles that fall off also add to the damage sent. You lose by having your bubbles reach the ground. This is a fun mode that I can see myself logging hundreds of hours into. Now all we need is Puyo Puyo Tetris Puzzle Bobble.

Puzzle Bobble Vs Space Invaders

Lastly, we have Puzzle Bobble Vs Space Invaders. In this mode, you move around and dodge enemy lasers while throwing bubbles at the spaceships that are shooting at you. Each spaceship corresponds to a color and just like in the main game, you destroy the spaceships by matching them with three or more of the same color. This mode feels a little lackluster compared to the other two modes, however, it is still just as enjoyable.

Puzzle Bobble VS Space Invaders

Bright, Bubbly, Rainbow Island

Puzzle Bobble Everybubble! has a fantastic presentation, from the menus to the adorable art style and even the bright and bubbly soundtrack. The menus of this game remind me of Kirby Star Allies, with their comic book art style, and they look just as gorgeous. These menus are also very simple to navigate making it quite easy to get to the mode you want to play. All the character designs are also done in such an adorable fashion that it’s hard not to like any of them. Although the character designs are well done, the voices can sometimes become quite annoying. Thankfully the annoying voices are exclusive to the story cutscenes and they are not in the gameplay sections but it shouldn’t be an issue in the first place. Lastly, the soundtrack is well done. The soundtrack changes based on your situation, which is a really neat touch.

The adorable characters go head to head in versus mode

Every Bubble Puzzled Bobble

Puzzle Bobble Everybubble! is a fantastic game that is perfect for newcomers to the Puzzle Bobble series. This title has fun, addicting gameplay, lots of different modes and levels, and is presented beautifully. While it has some flaws such as its annoying voice acting and lackluster story, the game is still enjoyable throughout the runtime. Overall Puzzle Bobble Everybubble! is a fantastic game that you should pick up if you are interested in puzzle games or arcade games.

Review: ESWAP XR PRO Controller Forza Horizon 5 Edition from Thrustmaster

Here is our review of the ESWAP XR PRO Controller Forza Horizon 5 Edition from Thrustmaster.

Experience incredibly immersive racing with the gamepad, thanks to the brand-new RACING WHEEL MODULE. Master your trajectories and drifts, and stay in control on any type of terrain with the module’s 95° rotation angle and non-slip surface.

What’s in the box?

The box contains the controller, instructions, cable, screwdriver, carry bag and racing module.

A Closer Look

Final Thoughts

The first thing you notice about the controller is that it is decked on in Forza Horizon 5 colours, and it looks cool!

The controller is fairly lightweight, although it feels very robust – which it it!

The buttons and sticks feel comfortable to use and are extremely responsive.

The unique selling point for this particular controller is that you can swap the two thumbsticks and the D-pad around. You just pull them out and move them into whichever position on the controller you want. It’s the ultimate in remapping! But it doesn’t end there! This particular controller comes with an extra module – it’s a mini steering wheel! Just pop that into place and you can use it to control the steering of your car! It’s incredibly responsive and it has a 95 degree rotation angle – it feels like you are using a steering wheel with just your thumb! When you have the racing wheel module plugged in (you’ve probably removed the D-pad to use it), the d-pad controls are automatically remapped to four buttons on the underside of the controller. The modular design works really well – and if at some point in the life of your controller you break one of the sticks, you can just buy a replacement rather than having to buy a whole new controller.

Thrustmaster have also included a bag and a small screwdriver to keep everything together and to help you remove the D-pad when the time comes.

There are also a number of buttons on the controller you can use including volume and mic.

The controller itself is wired, so you just plug in the supplied cable and start using it. It’s a shame it’s not wireless, but the cable should be long enough for most people, and you can always buy a longer cable if needed.

You can also use the ThrustmapperX software to adjust the sensitivity and other settings of the controller with ease. You can also use your Xbox to make changes too. The ThrustmapperX software is only available for Windows though, so if you are a Mac user you will have to use your Xbox.

If you are a fan of Forza Horizon 5, or you want to play other racing games, then this controller is a must have! I found that it really helped my driving – it took a little bit to get used to, but once I did I honestly believe it helped me!

The ESWAP XR PRO Controller Forza Horizon 5 Edition from Thrustmaster is available now priced around £179.99.

Review: MOGA XP-Ultra controller

The MOGA XP-Ultra controller has broken the mould! Why? It is the first licensed wireless controller for the Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One. Now, this may not sound like a big deal, but it is. No longer will I have to trail 3 metres of cable to my Xbox if I wish to use an alternative pad. Instead, I’m free to roam my living room with something other than the official Microsoft controller. Consequently, I was immediately impressed.

This unusual-looking pad may not catch your eye straight away. However, once you understand why it looks strange, you won’t mind its design quirks. Thanks to its unique modular design, this controller is versatility personified. Not only can it be connected to any compatible Windows device or Smart TV, but it is also suitable for Cloud Gaming. Accordingly, it is the perfect companion for Xbox Game Pass players. On top of this, the hand grips can be removed to create a compact controller that is perfect for smaller hands. As such, this exciting new product will interest a wide range of gamers.

What’s in the box of The MOGA XP-Ultra controller?

  • The packaging is professional and screams to be opened. With eye-catching imagery and a stunning faux-carbon finish, it looks incredible. Moreover, the contents are well-packaged and every element can be recycled.
  • The MOGA XP-Ultra controller looks amazing but slightly unusual. The modular design takes a bit of getting used to and the button layout is slightly different. Additionally, there are two mappable buttons on the rear. Alongside this, there is a battery indicator to ensure you don’t run out of juice.
  • A mobile phone clip makes this perfect for Cloud Gaming. The reinforced design and spring-loaded clip ensure this is compatible with most modern phones.
  • Get to know the basics with a straightforward guide.
  • A lengthy braided USB-C charing cable.
  • 1 month of Game Pass. Try Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for 1 month at no additional cost.

Technical aspects.

A controller is a controller, right? Wrong! Getting the right device for your setup is essential if you want the best experience. Luckily, PowerA and MOGA do some incredible controllers, but this is by far their best one yet. The ability to use this pad wirelessly is a game-changer. On top of this, the modular design makes it unbelievably versatile and great if you have younger gamers in your house.

Every element of the MOGA XP-Ultra controller was easy to understand and nothing felt alien. Though the button placement was slightly off, a small adjustment was required to get back on track. However, this minor setback was worth the effort. Thankfully, every layer of this pad has been created with gamers in mind. Whether it is the adaptive rumble motors, the high-capacity 2000mAh battery, the impulse triggers, or the compatibility settings, this will impress you.

Alongside this, you’ll be up and running in no time. The wireless connection is completed at the press of a button. After this, it is plain sailing. However, if you wish to use your Bluetooth, a separate button ensures that this is a painless experience as well.

Transformers: Controller in disguise.

I’ve never seen a controller as versatile as this one. Its modular design is so easy to mix up and change that you can move from Xbox to PC to mobile gaming in moments. This smooth and effortless design will impress the most hardened of gamers. If you wish to Cloud Game, you simply connect the mobile phone clip and slide your device into the padded but secure spring-loaded jaws. From here, you connect via Bluetooth and away you go.

Alternatively, you can sit back and enjoy a traditional setup. By pressing the Xbox button, the device will connect to your Xbox and away you go. From here, you use the device like an official controller and there were no input errors or latency issues to report. The same experience was enjoyed when playing on my Smart TV and my laptop. Each time I connected the accessory, I had a trouble-free experience that left me extremely impressed.

The compact design once the grip was removed was unbelievably good. This impressive design choice finally enables younger gamers to have a quality controller with all the bells and whistles. Previously, child-friendly controllers have been somewhat understated and lacking in features. However, The MOGA XP-Ultra controller delivers quality at every turn.

An immersive experience with a competitive edge.

The amazing magnetic impulse triggers and the adaptive rumble motors create an immersive experience. I adored the realistic feedback via each trigger point and every rumble motor. Moreover, the comfortable and tactile grips ensure that this is great for long and short gaming sessions. However, the compact design has no rubberised finish and this may be an unfortunate oversight. It would have been nice to have a form of textured grip by the rear buttons for added comfort.

Talking of the rear buttons, these mappable inputs give you a competitive edge. Like the Elite controller, these buttons can be changed on the fly and this makes a massive difference. Whether you are trying to “no-scope” an enemy or complete a speedrun, these additional inputs make a massive difference.

Is the MOGA XP-Ultra controller worth it?

The official Microsoft controllers have ruled the roost forever. However, the MOGA-XP Ultra controller gives it a run for its money. Thanks to the excellent build quality and its versatility, it is an amazing option. Furthermore, the compact mode is great for younger players and the game clip makes this an awesome Cloud Gaming tool. On top of this, the mappable buttons give you a competitive edge and the impulse triggers make for an immersive experience. Accordingly, I loved this controller and I recommend that you buy it here!

Review: Brotato

Brotato is the type of game that’ll make you scream. This hectic and addictive affair will drive you mad from the moment you switch it on. However, it is this moreish gameplay that makes it so incredible. As such, if you love Vampire Survivors, then I suggest you keep reading.

Developed and published by Blobfish, this is an action rogue-like title. Moreover, this arena-based shooter is fast-paced, aggressive, and tough as hell. On top of this, there are loads of weapons to master, items to purchase, and plenty of potatoes to pick from. Consequently, there are many ways to play it and trial and error will be your best friend.

Brotato has been in Early Access for some time. However, this review coincides with the full game release. Subsequently, the team has added new weapons, characters, items, and bosses to expand your horizons and the challenging gameplay.

Allow the turret to do the work.
Use that turret and mow down the creatures.

What the heck is happening in Brotato?

Unlike Vampire Survivors, Brotato sticks to one arena. Now, you may worry that this is a bad idea. Well, worry not, as it’s utterly fascinating. The refined space creates a manic environment that is filled with projectiles, enemies, and danger. However, as you progress, it is also filled with mines, turrets, drones, and other helpful assets. Accordingly, the unruly nature of the action doesn’t allow you time to think or get bored.

The gameplay loop is easy to understand. You pick from a list of unlocked potato heroes. From here, you are thrust into a deadly arena. You must survive 20 waves of maddening action that progressively get worse. The waves get longer and last no more than 90 seconds. En route, you’ll encounter elite mobs and finally a boss battle. Subsequently, it is no mean feat and finishing the game is not for the faint of heart.

The action was phenomenal, but I was confused by the lack of storytelling. It would have been nice to have an overarching story that defined rivalries or a war between civilisations. However, this wasn’t to be and you are free to create a fitting scenario.

The heroes.

Brotato’s concept remains the same throughout unless you activate the endless mode. Yet, that option is for hardcore gamers and those who are a little sadomasochistic. Where the action alters is your character selection, the weapons you buy, and the items you invest in.

Each potato has a set of skills and strengths and weaknesses. Consequently, there is a hero to match every playstyle. Luckily, any weaknesses can be removed and strengths improved as you level up. By collecting resources, you’ll obtain XP and gold. The XP improves your level and, therefore, your skills. Gold is equally essential, as it is used to buy weapons and items at the start of each wave.

Wave 20 will test your resolve.
Try to avoid the big red creature.

Weapons and items.

Upgrading your hero is the only way you’ll complete the game. As such, levelling up is key, but so are the weapons and items that you buy. Your hero can only wield 6 tools, so choosing the right ones isn’t an easy task. Will you stick to melee weapons but risk close-quarter combat? Or will you arm yourself with lasers, shotguns, and other guns? Whichever you select, they each have pros and cons. Alongside this, there is a tiered weapon system and you can combine equal-tiered weapons to improve your arsenal. Accordingly, there are many tactical layers that must be considered.

To complicate the matter further, the list of items appears endless. These helpful tools change every aspect of the game while strengthening your character. You’ll improve your agility, armour, speed, accuracy, and much more. Alongside this, you can invest in turrets, drones, mines, and so forth. Effectively, the combination of weapons and items creates a super vegetable hero that changes on every playthrough.

Brotato makes potatoes look beautiful.

Vampire Survivors is an exceptional game. Yet, it isn’t that attractive. Yes, I liked its pixelated style, but it won’t be for everyone. Thankfully, Brotato has removed this concern. Not only does it compete with its gameplay, but it looks incredible as well. In fact, the developers have somehow made potatoes look beautiful. Moreover, the varied sprites are great and the refined arena prevents it from becoming overbearing.

The audio, on the other hand, rattles your senses. The aggressive and upbeat soundtrack is punctuated by insane sound effects. The consistent noise gets under your skin and drives you crazy. Yet, this cacophony of noises works perfectly as you slay each creature in sight.

This potato is happy to use its fists.
Who needs a gun when you have your fists?

Verified for Steam Deck

My Steam Deck doesn’t get the use it deserves. Therefore, I’m always on the lookout for verified titles. Fortunately, Brotato works flawlessly and is verified as well. As such, the controls are buttery smooth and easy to understand. Luckily, the same can be said if you play it on your PC. Subsequently, this can be enjoyed by players of all ages and skill sets.

The simple gameplay and moreish action ensure that there is both replay value and longevity. Furthermore, the scaling difficulty settings and the endless game mode make it accessible to many gamers. Additionally, the volume of weapons and items and the strengths and weaknesses of each hero create untold gameplay styles.

Brotato lives up to its potential.

This genre is hot property. Consequently, if a developer gets it right, the game will fly off the shelves. Luckily, Brotato is nearly perfect and, as such, it lives up to its potential. My only complaint is that there isn’t enough information to highlight each key component. Moreover, materials and resources are often confused, and this muddies the water. However, this is a minor complaint, and the game is still phenomenal. Accordingly, I adored it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you defeat every boss? Survive each wave, destroy the elite monsters, and slay that gargantuan creature.

Can The Film Industry Survive The Era of Streaming Services

0

The film industry remains in one piece three years after the COVID-19 pandemic hit. If it can withstand the enormous challenges brought upon by the pandemic, is there an obstacle the film industry cannot hurdle?

The influence of streaming services quickly comes to mind when pondering the future of the cinema sector. In 2023, the global number of digital video viewers is projected to reach 3.5 billion. It tells us that more households are relying on streaming platforms for their entertainment needs.

On top of that, the streaming market is continuing to grow year by year. In 2018, Statista penned the value of the streaming sector at $42.4 billion, which is already a lot. Then its value doubled four years after, as the streaming market was valued at $84.3 billion in 2022.

If you only consider these numbers above, you would think that theater businesses are in such peril. Let’s put that thought away right from the get-go. The film industry is still high up there on safe grounds.

But we’ll get back to the cinema sector in just a minute. Let’s first dive deep into the origins of streaming services and how they have become so popular.

How did streaming services become so popular?

YouTube is undoubtedly the pioneer in the streaming market. It started off as a streaming service right away, unlike the DVD-rental beginnings of Netflix in 1997. After entering its name into public consciousness in 2005, YouTube’s value quickly skyrocketed when it was acquired by Google in 2006.

In what’s considered the best tech deal in history, Google shelled out $1.65 billion to buy YouTube. It wasn’t a ripoff back then, but it’s safe to say that it was a safe bet for Google. YouTube’s value currently stands at $183 billion, an eye-popping growth rate from where it was in 2006.

YouTube’s sudden rise to prominence also happened almost simultaneously with the availability of wireless Internet connection in households. At the time, there were still many people who were using the traditional and slower DSL setup, but the trend was already geared towards the faster Broadband connection. With a growing population gaining convenient access to the Internet, it was perfect timing for YouTube to take off.

With YouTube gaining traction in the market, Netflix and other streaming options followed suit. You’d be surprised to know that there are more than 200 streaming services currently available worldwide, which tells you all you need to know about the competition and potential gains in the video streaming market.

But then the pandemic hit in 2020, and it surely affected the movie industry. Did it have any negative impact on the streaming market?

How did the pandemic affect the movie and streaming sectors?

For self-evident reasons, the theater business took a direct hit during the height of the pandemic. From a $ 42.3 billion revenue in 2019, the theatrical sector only garnered $12 billion in 2020. That’s a $31.3-billion dropoff in the span of a single year, not to mention that other facets of the film industry were also affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The close-quarter nature of work in the industry forced them to work minimal or totally shut down operations. Do you still remember that day when Tom Hanks announced that he and his wife tested positive for COVID-19? They were filming a biopic at that time, but as soon as Hanks made that public announcement, the set was abruptly packed up and shut down.

With the theater businesses and movie productions slowing down, streaming services continued to rise even in the midst of the pandemic. In 2020, the streaming market was still valued at $59.1 billion, which was $27.8-billion higher than the theater market.

It’s safe to say that the streaming market wasn’t at all negatively hit by the pandemic. So all attention points toward how the cinema industry is recovering from this challenge.

A slow but steady recovery for movie theaters

The good news is that the movie industry has taken significant steps in its recovery. From just 1.9 billion tickets sold worldwide in 2020, cinema attendance is steadily increasing in the following years. Around 3.3 billion tickets were sold in 2021, and that even increased to 5.7 billion in 2022.

By 2026, Statista projects cinema admission to reach 7.7 billion tickets, a number that is on par with pre-pandemic numbers. This is a very positive trend, especially for smaller movie theaters that took the brunt of the COVID-19 impact. It will be a very slow march toward recovery, but the important thing is it’s still possible for these theaters to bounce back in the next couple of years.

The film industry can withstand the streaming challenge

If the movie industry continues this trend of recovering from the pandemic hit, there’s no doubt that it could withstand the challenge put up by streaming services. Sure, the numbers for the streaming market are steadily increasing, and who knows when its peaking point will be. But the crucial fact remains that the growth of streaming services has not resulted in huge dropoffs for the theater business.

Not everyone has a state-of-the-art home theater setup, so people will still rely on theaters and cinemas to watch their favorite movies. The unique experience of watching a movie on a 16-foot-wide screen is just too much to pass up for moviegoers.

Film production companies and theater businesses should know how to effectively market a movie because they still have a huge audience base to tap into. A creative, audience-driven movie promotional campaign may exhaust more resources and require more funds, but it could go a long way in turning heads and tapping into organic, word-of-mouth marketing.

As long as this world continues to exist, there will always be movies to produce and promote. In a perfect world, though, there could be avenues for streaming platforms and theaters to work in unison. It’s not too far-fetched to imagine that scenario, especially in an industry that seems to evolve by the day.

Poker Strategies to Help You Dominate the Table

0

Are you ready to dominate the poker table? Anyone can become an expert player with a few strategic shifts and a bit of practice. Poker is not just about luck; it’s also about knowing when to bet, when to fold, and how to read your fellow players. By learning these skills, you can take your game from amateur level to professional in no time. So grab your cards and let’s get started!

1. Manage Your Bankroll

By setting aside a designated amount for poker games, you build a cushion against any potential downturns and avoid succumbing to the pitfalls of irresponsible gambling. Developing a disciplined approach toward bankroll management maximizes your playing capacity and fuels your confidence to make calculated, strategic decisions at the table.

Rest assured, with a solid bankroll management plan and sharpened poker skills, you’ll be well on your way to becoming an unstoppable force.

2. Study the Game

A versatile approach to learning is vital, as each player’s unique style offers invaluable insights. Read strategy guides that outline proven tactics and best practices to maximize your chances of success.

Moreover, watching instructional videos can provide you with a virtual front-row seat to the thought processes of seasoned poker pros, enabling you to glean essential knowledge from their wealth of experience.

Beyond that, also utilize various other training materials, as they’ll help refine your gameplay and advance your skillset to the next level.

Remember, becoming a formidable poker player takes perseverance, but with a confident attitude and these strategic resources in your arsenal, you’ll be well on your way to conquering the table.

3. Take Advantage of Free Poker Games Online

One effective way to master the game while minimizing risk is by using free poker games online. These virtual platforms allow you to become familiar with the rules, hands, and terminology, all without putting your hard-earned money on the line. Not only do you get the opportunity to comprehend the nuances of poker, but you can also experiment with different strategies and play styles to find the perfect approach.

4. Choose Your Table Wisely

Playing poker isn’t merely about finding a table with available seats; it’s about positioning yourself among players with similar skill levels. This tactic allows you to develop and improve your poker skills at a reasonable pace, preventing discouragement or frustration that may come from facing overly skilled opponents. Confidence is key while playing poker, and the right table with well-matched players will ignite that self-assurance, putting you on a more successful trajectory.

5. Adjust Your Strategy According to Your Position

While luck certainly plays a part, another critical aspect of winning is recognizing the importance of your position at the table.

Late-position players are in a prime spot to make aggressive plays, as they know more about their opponents’ hands and play styles. With this vital insight, they can confidently seize the opportunity to raise or even bluff their way to a larger pot.

In contrast, early-position players must exercise greater caution in their moves. Without the luxury of knowing how other players may react, they must be more discreet in their decision-making.

By acknowledging and respecting the significance of your position at the table, you’ll be well on your way to dominating the poker game with a winning strategy.

6. Pay Attention to Your Opponents’ Play Styles

It’s not enough to master your play; you have to pay attention to the other players at the table—precisely, their play styles. Familiarize yourself with players’ various strategies, such as aggressive or passive, tight or loose.

Once you can identify these characteristics in your opponents, you’ll be better equipped to anticipate their moves and devise tailored counter-strategies. This heightened awareness will give you the edge to take control and outmaneuver even the toughest of competition, catapulting you to new heights of poker dominance.

7. Take Breaks

One often overlooked yet highly effective strategy to emerge victorious at the table involves knowing when to disengage from the game temporarily. A brief break can help you clear your mind, recalibrate your thoughts, and regain your composure, ensuring you approach upcoming hands with the sharpest focus and unshakable confidence.

More often than not, taking breaks helps you steadily dominate the table by preventing hasty plays and keeping your mind in top form. So, remember to take breaks regularly—it may just be the deciding factor in your poker triumph!

8. Reflect on Your Games

Try taking a few minutes after each session, when the excitement has faded, to dissect the hands you played carefully. As you recall the pacing, emotions, and decisions, you’ll begin to unravel the intricate tapestry that constitutes your performance.

Acknowledge your victories, but do not stop decoding your missteps, for these lessons will shape you into a more formidable adversary. Staying mindful of the nuances distinguishing a victorious hand from a regretful one will vastly enhance your ability to learn from experience and ultimately triumph.

Conclusion

Poker is a complex, ever-evolving game that requires more than just luck. By equipping yourself with these skills and strategies, you’ll be more than ready to start dominating the tables. So, sign up now at GGPoker, the world’s largest poker room, and get ready to experience the thrill of victory!

Review: Nova Lands

Nova Lands explores the concept of production evolution. Moreover, it mixes it perfectly with island management, farming, and a smattering of exploration. En route, this cute and often calm experience throws in some interesting curveballs. Consequently, you are kept on your toes as unexpected things often occur.

Developed by BEHEMUTT and published by HypeTrain Digital, this is a cute adventure title. What’s more, there are management elements and base building, and combat to master. Accordingly, there is plenty to do as you explore this odd but relaxing blend of genres.

Nova Lands focuses on automation.

Nova Lands has a rudimentary story, but the action focuses on research and automation. Subsequently, there is a reliance on resource “grinding”, levelling up, and a semi-linear progression system. Therefore, it is a bit of a time sink, but its straightforward nature allows you to enjoy it casually if you can put it down.

You are the inhabitant of a strange island, and your task is simple. You must expand your base, upgrade your factories, and unlock new resources. However, the strange happenings and extraterrestrial beings make this anything but ordinary. Consequently, you’ll enjoy a weird blend of Factorio, Forager, and Satisfactory. This weird combination of games shouldn’t work, but it does. As a result, you enjoy wonderful automation and some out-of-this-world evolution.

The hero has tamed a beast to ride around the islands.
Tame the wildlife and get riding.

Stay alert and expand your empire.

The early game focuses on basic resources such as sticks and rocks. However, roll on a few hours and you’ll be producing steel, iron, and copper. From here, you’ll create new buildings such as electrical refineries, solar panels, and coal power plants. Once you hit this stage of evolution, the world is your oyster.

Talking of the world, the map is broken into many different islands. However, accessing each one isn’t simple, as you must build a machine to unlock them. Furthermore, you’ll require certain resources to access them permanently. Now, you may think, what’s the point? Well, each island is key to your expansion. One contains oodles of ore, while another has almost unlimited water plants. Additionally, some hide cruel bosses or interesting surprises.

Bosses and aliens.

I don’t want to give too much away, but you will come across extraterrestrial beings. These out-of-this-world creatures help with base expansion whilst improving the end-game facilities. This was an interesting twist on the normal tropes and something that took me by surprise. Consequently, I applaud the developers for their unusual approach and their expansive gameplay.

Nova Lands has a small roster of bosses and an intriguing upgrade system. The bosses are cruel, large, and difficult to take down. Therefore, you’re going to need to make the most of the upgrade system. Once you unlock the main island, you can upgrade your extractor gun, armour, jetpack, and much more. These brilliant additions make it much easier to explore and it’s undeniably quicker to improve your base.

The bosses are big, angry, and dangerous.
Why are you so angry?

Automation.

Like its peers, Nova Lands has an interesting automation mechanic. You are free to do every task yourself. Yet, the game pushes you towards an automated system. Therefore, you’re best not to fight it, as it improves your gaming experience and allows you to reach the end goal quicker.

With an array of robots at your disposal and plenty of buildings to house and shift goods, you can let the robots take the strain. This was incredible, as it was like poetry in motion. Subsequently, once you understand the fundamentals, you can mine each island for its resources whilst you work towards research goals or each boss encounter.

Nova Lands is sensationally vivid.

I adored the calm and easy-to-follow core concept. However, I cherished the graphics. The vivid colours and adorable sprites bring the game to life. Additionally, the unique island environment ensures it never becomes tiresome. Alongside this, the UI is refined and simple to manage. Accordingly, you can focus on expanding your empire.

A relaxing game needs a serene soundtrack. Thankfully, Nova Lands has plenty of laid-back tracks to enjoy. However, each high-energy moment is complemented by an aggressive tune. This was a great artistic decision that adds a spark to an already interesting title. Furthermore, the excellent sound effects add weight to the sci-fi edge. Accordingly, this is a rounded audio experience that’s enjoyable to listen to.

The map in Nova Lands is massive.
This is the tip of the iceberg.

A technophobe’s dream.

The idea of automation and hundreds of robots could be daunting. Yet, Nova Lands simplifies the matter and therefore, this is a technophobe’s dream. Thanks to the incredible UI, you can easily set your robots to work. Furthermore, the control layout and responsive inputs are excellent during the boss battles. My only complaint is the aiming system. Occasionally, you’ll shoot wild animals in error and all hell breaks loose. It’s a minor thing, but something that should be looked at by the developers.

If you enjoy a colourful time sink, then this is the game for you. You’ll need to invest around 60-70 hours to unlock every layer of technology and visit the end-game segments. Moreover, it is great fun to tweak each element of your automated system. Subsequently, if you so wish, you can spend much longer refining each production line. As such, this oozes longevity. However, once you’ve completed it, I see little reason to start over again.

Nova Lands is a great addition to the genre.

BEHEMUTT has done a great job with Nova Lands. This relaxing and adorable island management sim ticks many boxes. Moreover, it is full of secrets and will keep you entertained throughout. I found it hard to find fault with this great title, but its lack of replay value and slightly clumsy cursor system are my only negatives. Consequently, I adored it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you create an automated factory and unlock every island? Grab your tools, evolve your setup, and see what you can discover.

Review: BlendJet 2 bundle

The BlendJet 2 bundle is a revolutionary way to maintain your healthy routine when on the move. Moreover, this vivid and stylish-looking portable utensil is rugged, hard-wearing, and unbelievably easy to use. On top of this, the bundle ensures that you keep your smoothie cool while being able to drink straight from the blender.

I was amazed by how lightweight the BlendJet 2 blender is! What’s more, the user-friendly setup was impressive. With an embossed measuring guide, you needn’t carry any measuring tools. Consequently, you’ll streamline your setup without losing the functionality. Furthermore, the incredible accessories that make up the BlendJet 2 bundle are straightforward but a game-changer at the same time.

What’s in the box of the BlendJet 2 bundle?

  • The colourful packaging is recyclable and pleasant to the eye. Additionally, the strong cardboard boxes keep the contents safe while highlighting each key selling point.
  • The BlendJet 2 comes in a range of striking colours. For this review, I choose a rich purple finish. The container allows you to blend up to 475 mL of smoothie drinks. Alternatively, you can make guacamole, salsa, or hummus, if you wish. The standard lid is a solid unit with a colour-matching rubberised handle. Moreover, there is a USB-C charging point and an LED push button to activate a range of blending modes.
  • A simple user guide talks you through the fundamentals. What’s more, it tells you how to make the perfect smoothie or shake.
  • The Jetsetter thermal insulated sleeve is a must-have accessory. Keep your drinks cool with this perfectly sized, insulative sleeve.
  • If you wish to drink on the move, then you’ll want to upgrade the lid. The Orbiter Drinking lid allows you to drink from the blender without unsightly spillages.
  • A small USB-C cable is provided to charge the device.

Technical aspects.

I know what you are thinking. “It’s a blender. How complicated can it be?”. Well, in theory, that’s correct! However, in reality, the BlendJet 2 bundle revolutionises the blending market. Not only is this portable blender the perfect accessory for those who like to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but its blending speed is mind-blowing. Thanks to the patented Turbojet technology and the offset 6-point stainless steel blades, you’ll smash through ice, vegetables, and fruit in no time. The result? An unbelievably smooth drink in under 20 seconds.

Alongside the incredibly fast blending speed, the battery life is impressive as well. The quick-charging battery last for around 15 smoothies. Additionally, the quick charge facility allows you to refill the battery in no time at all. Subsequently, you have no concerns that you’ll be out of juice when you are trying to blend some, ummm…. juice.

Usability.

Portable devices are fantastic, but normally, something has to give. Usually, it is the usability that is impacted, and this is a shame. Thankfully, though, the BlendJet 2 bundle is different. Each element of this fantastic package is user-friendly while enhancing the base unit. The Jetsetter thermal insulated sleeve is incredible. Designed to snuggly fit the BlendJet 2 device, it is the perfect companion on hot, sultry days. Moreover, it is a handy tool if you wish to carry the blender without getting weird looks.

The Orbital Drinking Lid is another essential tool that changes everything about this device. Now, you can use the blender without it, but you risk making a mess and removing the lid to drink can be unsightly. However, this excellent lid keeps things tidy and streamlined. The sealed swivel clasp can be moved with ease while allowing you to sip from your beverage. It was a small change that made a big difference to the usability, and one I recommend.

If you’ve ever owned a blender, you know it can be a pain to clean! The blades are tough to reach and fruit gets stuck in the hardest-to-reach places. Luckily, cleaning this is a cinch. First, you can simply fill the device with water and let the blades do the work. Alternatively, you can unscrew the container from the base and clean it with ease. Either way, you won’t worry about tough-to-reach food that would otherwise taint your device.

Blending modes.

This device is perfect for drinks and for making dips. Thanks to the multifunction power button, you can blend at a steady pace, or use a pulse input. This was unexpected, but something that makes the BlendJet 2 bundle even better value for money. Accordingly, if you like to make hummus, guacamole, or other tapas-style dips, then this is the perfect choice.

Another element that impressed me was the lock function. By holding down the power button, you’ll lock the blade system in place. This ensures that you can clean the device with ease as well as drink from it without any mishaps. Thankfully, to make things easier, the LED circle flashes purple whenever the device is locked. This was great, especially when you are transporting your ingredients and you don’t wish to blend them prematurely.

Is the BlendJet 2 bundle worth it?

It isn’t easy to get excited about a blender. Yet, I adore the BlendJet 2 bundle. This incredible portable device is exceptional. Not only is the battery life great, but it can be charged in no time at all. Moreover, the design is eye-catching and the build quality is phenomenal. On top of this, the accessories in the bundle enhance the base product and are worthy of the additional outlay. As such, if you live a healthy lifestyle and wish to make shakes or smoothies on the move, then look no further. Accordingly, I loved this device and I recommend that you buy it here!

The Blendjet 2 bundle has been awarded the Movies Games and Tech Gold award.

Review: SENSEs Midnight

SENSEs Midnight is the latest title of the SENSE anthology. However, you can enjoy this latest endeavour as a standalone title. Alternatively, if you want a rounded experience, I recommend that you pick up the excellent SENSE: A Cyberpunk Ghost Story. Though there are some key changes to its presentation, much of the core gameplay remains the same. As such, it’ll be familiar to fans of this creepy series.

Developed by SUZAKU Games and Eastasiasoft Limited and published by the latter, this is a creepy horror title. Moreover, there are some minor puzzle elements, plenty of ghastly apparitions, and some interesting albeit wasted mechanics. Where this differs from its predecessor, is its 3D finish. What’s more, it is noticeably shorter and this may disappoint some of you.

Solve the puzzles and get out of the park.
Can you find a way out of the park?

SENSEs Midnight tells a creepy tale.

I love anything that is Asian-inspired. The often larger-than-life characters and unbelievably creepy ghost stories have you hooked immediately. Fortunately, SENSEs Midnight has both of these elements and the game thrives as a consequence. Throughout this eerie endeavour, you’ll be expected to explore a sinister park while evading malevolent spirits. Accordingly, it’ll keep you on your toes while chilling you to the bone.

There is a legend known as the Midnight Door. This spooky tale is rarely believed, but this doesn’t stop Kaho. She is a member of the occult club and she uses her trip to Ikebukuro to uncover the secrets of this story. However, unbeknownst to her, she is messing with powers she can’t understand. Subsequently, when she begins the ritual, she opens a doorway that cannot be closed. Cruel ghosts escape and unless she escapes, they’ll take her life.

A straightforward gameplay loop.

Breaking into the park to start the ritual was the easy part. However, getting out alive isn’t so simple. Luckily, though, the gameplay loop is straightforward and refined. Once the ritual begins, you must navigate the eerie paths evading the ghost’s attention. There is one main spook that’ll kill you immediately and an array of other hideous apparitions. If you spot these cruel entities, you have 3 options at your disposal. 1. Run for your life. 2. Hide within an area known as a talisman spot. 3. Use a Magatama to neutralise any threats.

These ideas are great in practice, but in reality, it’s somewhat hectic. Sadly, the map can be a nightmare to explore and the poor camera angle often hinders your advances. Alongside this, the controls are clumsy and they hold you back as well. Moreover, unless you know where to go, you sprint around like a headless chicken. Now, this is amusing and you can evade the spirits with relative ease. Yet, it doesn’t make for a user-friendly experience and the action is impacted because of it.

The camera is a key tool.
Use your camera to find those spooks.

You are not alone.

The developers have incorporated an interesting voyeuristic twist to the narrative. The protagonist may be alone in the park, but her friends are watching from afar. As such, the occult members offer advice and guidance via text messages. This was an unusual take that helped you to solve problems, as well as giving you some in-depth information.

Alongside this, I enjoyed the main gameplay mechanic. Kaho is armed with a special camera. Accordingly, this tool enables you to spot spooks and any other weird apparitions. Therefore, you can capture some interesting images that oddly link to the previous game. This was a nice touch that will sadly be lost on newcomers. Yet, if you are a veteran, you’ll adore every moment.

Bizarrely, the camera cannot be used as a weapon. Instead, you must stand your ground and snap pictures. This wouldn’t be so strange, but the main ghouls are still chasing you. As such, the aspect always feels rushed, and it never fulfils its potential.

SENSEs Midnight doesn’t hit the mark.

I loved the grim setting and the claustrophobic atmosphere. Moreover, the labyrinthine setup was confusing and uncomfortable to navigate. Alongside this, when the camera angles worked, the game had a quirky finish that was interesting to look at. However, when it went awry, it was appalling and hindered the gameplay. Another element I loved was the neon imagery and the mindless graffiti. They gave the action a seedy edge, and it linked in nicely with its predecessor. Unfortunately, though, the rushed gameplay and the never-ending running force you to miss most of these excellent moments. As such, SENSEs Midnight doesn’t hit the mark.

In typical horror fashion, the audio takes the lead role. The suspenseful music and excellent use of silence add to the drama. Additionally, the sound effects were uncomfortably absurd, and this worked perfectly with the theme. My only complaint is the text-based dialogue. It would have been nice to have some voice notes to break things up. Moreover, the texts occasionally go too fast and you may miss key information as a consequence.

SENSEs Midnight is full of weird puzzles.
Hmmmm. What have we got here?

Clumsy controls.

Besides the camera angle, my biggest frustration was the controls. The protagonist moves at 2 speeds; meander or sprint. Neither is suitable for every occasion, but walking is an absolute no, no. Accordingly, you’ll sprint everywhere like a demented chicken. On top of this, you’ll crash into walls, benches and other obstacles repeatedly. This was annoying and only impacted the game whenever you were being chased. Disappointingly, SENSEs Midnight wasn’t as intuitive as its predecessor, and this was frustrating.

The action is undeniably short. Consequently, you’ll have this finished in the blink of an eye. Luckily, though, the price point is relatively low, so this isn’t too worrying. If you can cope with the shortcomings, there are reasons to return. However, once I completed it, I didn’t wish to return.

SENSEs Midnight didn’t float my boat.

Though I enjoyed the theme and the Easter Eggs from its predecessor, I wasn’t impressed. The step up from 2D to 3D wasn’t as spectacular as I’d hoped and it doesn’t maximise its potential. Moreover, the controls and the camera angles let it down. However, I liked the use of text messages and the puzzles were set at the right level. Yes, I would have liked the messages to be slower, but this wasn’t to be. All things considered, this is good for the price and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you survive the ritual? Knock on the door, awaken the spirits, and run for your life.

Review: Everdream Valley

Farming sims seem to be a dime a dozen these days as the “cosy games” genre approaches the stratosphere. From Animal Crossing to Stardew Valley, if you’ve got a hankering to plant some stuff and wait for it to grow whilst milling about putting up various carpentry projects, then it is a beautiful time for you as a gamer.

Personally, I’ve always bounced off these games, despite having dedicated a lot of time to the two games mentioned above. I have no patience, and whilst I can objectively see the appeal of farming sims, I just find them almost too cosy, too slow, and too safe. Where are the antagonists? Other than the inexorable march of time of course. But that’s just me and I promise to be as objective as possible in the following review.

Really selling the experience there Mother

For me, the appeal of a Stardew or an Animal Crossing is three-fold. One, Solid farming/building mechanics that offer a high degree of creativity. Two, a wide variety of activities to take part in so that the inevitable waiting period when crops or growing or whatever isn’t just dead time. And three, simple easy-to-use tools so that playing the game is a smooth experience. All of these things done right create a solid foundation for whatever skin you want to impose on top of them.

The question therefore is, does Everdream Valley meet these requirements?

No, not really.

For a start, Everdream Valley has you fixing up a dilapidated farm that you are abandoned on by your parents (don’t worry, your grandparents are here, this isn’t a neglect simulator), so, at least initially, you are constrained to fixing what’s already there rather than assembling your own creation.

Second, Everdream has a quest system to keep you moving but these tasks are busy work at best and onerous at worst. As a man who appreciates direction in games, I can’t help but feel that this system feels too restrictive.

Thirdly, the mechanics are not fun, you have a stamina bar, why? You slow down to a crawl if you go through slightly tall grass, why? The hitboxes on items are so precise, why? These and many more examples, make Everdream a frustrating experience to get into.

As Luke Skywalker famously said, what a piece of junk!

Now, not everything is bad. Everdream has very cartoony, pleasant to look at environments and characters, the world is quite vast, and the animals are adorable. The soundscape is very relaxing and not at all like the cacophonous racket that is usually found on real-life farms. The music is also very chill and factoring all these things in it is clear what the developers, Mooneaters, are attempting to create.

Which, in all honesty, makes the introduction of the mechanics I mentioned above so baffling. If this is designed to be a relaxing experience, why have a stamina bar? Especially one that, when it runs out, makes you useless until you recover ALL your energy, not just enough to perform whatever action you’re attempting at that time.

One positive I will give this game is that very early on it identifies the need for every man, woman, and child to have a faithful canine companion. For very little effort you are given a puppy and you can select from a surprisingly wide variety of breeds. I chose a Shiba Inu but if you’re inclined in a different direction then Everdream will have a pup for you, and yes you can pet it.

Such happy puppers

Everdream Valley clearly has a wide variety of activities and tasks that you can discover, complete and personalise but the problem isn’t with the game’s scope, rather it’s ability to persuade you to do these things. You can give me a quest telling me to plant as many apple trees as you like but if the process isn’t as simple as a few button presses then I’m out unfortunately.

But as I said, farming sims are never really my bag. There’s a solid game somewhere underneath all the unnecessary additions so if the art style appeals to you and you’re the kind of person who can sink hours into a pet project then maybe Everdream is for you, for me? I’ll go back to watching the timer for Final Fantasy XVI tick down. So long.

Review: LASERPITIUM

LASERPITIUM delivers old-school gameplay with a modern aesthetic. Moreover, this fast-paced adventure has multiple difficulty settings, many custom options, cooperative action, and a handful of ships to master. On top of this, you’ll enjoy an array of enemies and some hard-hitting bosses that need to be destroyed.

Developed by THE REETEAM and Eastasiasoft Limited and published by the latter, this is a 2D side-scrolling shooter. What’s more, it has a crazy sci-fi plot and is unbelievably moreish. With 10 unique stages to overcome and 10 bosses to annihilate, this is a perfectly mindless experience.

Play cooperatively and take down every enemy.
Work together and destroy everything in sight.

LASERPITIUM tells a classic tale.

Sci-fi games tend to stick to well-trodden tropes. As such, you either love or hate the genre. I’m well and truly a lover of all things science fiction and I appreciate the crazy familiarity it offers. However, I understand that aliens and futuristic mumbo jumbo can be tough to swallow. Accordingly, you should take the action and plot with a pinch of salt.

The year is 2357, and the government has signed a peace treaty for the good of mankind. To oversee operations, an artificial computer program known as EVA was created on the planet HELOS. Sadly, the AI caused social unrest, and a rebellion began. Consequently, you are an ace pilot who must crush the government and stop EVA once and for all.

Familiar mechanics.

If you love the genre, much of the action will feel familiar. The 2D side-scrolling approach is smooth and the bi-directional combat is challenging to manage. Moreover, there are swarms of enemies that must be shot down, an array of power-ups and health boosts to pick up, and many tight spaces to avoid. Alongside this, there are collectables to enhance your score. Subsequently, if you wish to top the leaderboard, you must keep your eyes peeled and avoid being hit by your foes.

The action is split into 2 game modes; short and campaign. The first option lets you focus on 5 random levels where you’ll tackle 5 unique bosses. The alternative challenges you to overcome each of the 10 stages. Furthermore, you are free to select the first 5 you’ll face and after that; you are in the lap of the gods. Consequently, the campaign mode is much longer, harder, and more difficult to predict.

LASERPITIUM is full of laser traps and deadly obastacles.
Avoid the laser wall.

Where are the new weapons?

Unlike its peers, LASERPITIUM doesn’t have an arsenal of weapons on offer. Instead, you must pick from 3 ships, each with a unique loadout. This decision will change your play style as the weapons on offer differ vastly. As such, you’ll find your favourite ship and begin your tough adventure.

Though I enjoyed this unusual approach, I missed the ever-changing gameplay of its peers. Therefore, once you understand the pros and cons of each spacecraft, the action somewhat plateaus. This was disappointing, as the fast-paced style should have been dramatic and exciting. However, the rinse-and-repeat gameplay wasn’t as enjoyable as other leading titles.

LASERPITIUM looks great.

The negatives are outweighed by the incredible aesthetics. This modern take on a classic genre was beautifully crafted. With stunning backdrops, excellent animation, and varied sprites, it was great to look at. Alongside this, the bosses are bloody ridiculous and I loved how brutal the swarms of aliens were. Subsequently, other than the lack of new weapons, this was a great example of the genre.

The audio was just as good. The hard-hitting soundtrack is complemented by crude but impressive sound effects. The shrill lasers, explosive bangs, and whining robotics were brilliant to hear. As such, the developers have done an amazing job to modernise this retro genre.

Can you defeat the robot snake?
Bloody robot snake.

Responsive controls.

You are surrounded by enemies and projectiles. Consequently, you need responsive controls to survive. Thankfully, LASERPITIUM delivers an incredible control layout that is easy to understand. With stripped-back controls and a gentle learning curve, you’ll master it in no time at all.

I was also impressed by the longevity and replay value. Though there are only 10 stages to overcome, there are multiple gameplay options and various difficulty settings to test out. On top of this, there is a leaderboard and 3 unique ships to test out. Therefore, there is plenty to do before you can put this to bed.

LASERPITIUM is good, but it missed a trick.

I enjoyed my time with LASERPITIUM. However, the lack of weaponry was a big disappointment. The developers missed a trick and this will upset veterans of the genre. Yet every other element worked exceptionally well. Accordingly, I can easily recommend that you buy it here! Can you save mankind from a demented AI? Lead the rebellion, thwart your enemies, and return a hero.

Review: Dwerve

Why is it so accepted that dwarves must mine too greedily and too deep? That they must have massive beards, hats with horns and drink nothing but mead? Where are all the dwarves that like drinking tea, reading classic literature and work as accountants? Blast you, Tolkein. You and your dwarves spread like a curse to all fantasy media. Dwerve is no exception.

It even references Lord of the Rings in the opening cutscene. Just replace the balrog with a horde of trolls. Still, Dwerve makes a few steps in the right direction. Our protagonist has blue hair, for one, rather than the classic ginger. His beard is also too small to braid. It’s progress. In fact, Dwerve has a lot of good ideas, even though the execution is a little wonky.

Dwerve - Fighting off goblins

Diggy Diggy Hole

Our eponymous dwarven hero, Dwerve, breaks the dwarf mold in quite a few ways, actually. For one, he’s quite friendly towards other races. After his village gets raided by trolls, led by the witch-queen Vandra, he sets off to prevent a war with the elves before venturing into troll-filled tunnels to thwart the invasion. Trolls are classic fantasy too so they’re supposed to turn to stone in the sun and a good part of the plot is spent trying to figure out why they’re just getting a sunburn instead. It’s a fairly standard plot, that lays out a series of macguffins to chase, but is buoyed by strong character writing. Dwerve‘s interactions with other characters help to sell it.

The other way that Dwerve differentiates himself is that he doesn’t use the standard issue dwarven axe. Instead, he attacks by building turrets then running off and crying in the corner. There’s a fairly staggering array of turrets, so let me just lay out the ones I tended to use. First is a melee turret, a set of spinning blades, that kept mobs clustered together and sliced them up. They’d then get shot by arrows by my arrow turret. If anything particularly nasty came along, I’d deploy a tesla coil to repeatedly stun them. If that didn’t work, I’d throw out a zap trap to slow ’em down. This core set of weapons was the result of constant testing and tweaking.

That’s one of the core strengths of the gameplay loop. It encourages a lot of experimentation. You can usually switch up and upgrade turrets before each battle. Coupled with a generous checkpoint system, this gives you a system that encourages mixing and matching turrets to see what works. There are quite a few enemy types too and Dwerve drip-feeds you new turrets constantly. When it works well, there’s a lot of tactical joy. You can only have a limited amount of turrets at a time, so tactics are crucial. Correctly setting up a kill-zone and then watching enemies break upon it is a delight.

Dwerve - Fighting monsters near lava

The Weak Point

The turret system is a great idea. It encourages adaptation and the stream of new enemy types brings in the challenge. That said, ideas are only as good as their execution and Dwerve‘s turrets have a few cracks in them. For one, Dwerve himself is fairly useless. He has a boomerang that can be used when standing still but you’re unlikely to be still for long. Besides, putting down turrets then knocking off for lunch doesn’t sound that fun. Dwerve, being a dwarf, also moves pretty slow, which seems to suggest that we should be taking our cues from the tower defence genre. Put down turrets and watch the enemies roll in.

However, the transfusion of tower defence into action-adventure is not a smooth one. Enemies come in hordes and don’t travel down set paths, for one. New spawners pop in all the time, frequently off the edge of the screen. This increases the likelihood of your turrets getting overwhelmed. Dwerve‘s slow movement speed and the slight delay when placing turrets meant I often got swamped before I could come up with a plan B. The bosses exemplify this issue the most. The worst was a big rabbit that constantly spawned goons while raining down AOE attacks. I very nearly gave up after the tenth time of being swarmed by monsters because Mr. Rabbit had destroyed all my turrets. Getting overrun gives the same feeling as losing at monopoly, only it ends with the player opposite knocking your teeth out.

I probably would’ve quit, if Dwelve hadn’t gone for the charm offensive in all other areas. There’s the writing, as mentioned before, which was enough to keep me emotionally invested. Dwerve keeps things positive while also having good interactions with other characters. It’s helped too by the nice art style. Admittedly, I’ve a weakness for pixel art (which is good given the sheer amount of titles that use it) but this is a great use. Even if Dwerve does look oddly small. It’s strange though, given the beautiful art, that we spend about three-quarters of the game stuck inside caves.

Dwerve - A tesla turret firing underground

Wonky Construction

For the first third of Dwelve I was set to name it as an excellent game. The story was hitting the right notes, the world was charming and the gameplay was exciting. Then the small frustrations began to mount and cling on to things. Everything began to slide towards the tower defence, leaving the action-adventure behind. There’s just too little we can do to recover from destruction. Contrast it to Rift Rangers. In that game, you can escape being overwhelmed by your speed alone. In Dwelve, if your turrets go down then there’s nothing in your action-adventure toolkit that can help you.

That’s why it comes down to good ideas, wonky execution. The range of turrets and the enemies to use them on are is great. If this were your standard tower defence game, I’d probably be all smiles. However, the stitching together of the two genres has not been seamless and that’s where the frustrations creep in. Still, it wasn’t enough to keep me from finishing the game. Dwelve has charm in spades and if you can overlook the creeping frustrations, you’ll still have a good time. Just don’t awaken a Balrog.

Review: Under the Warehouse

Under the Warehouse gives off distinct 80s vibes. This old-school puzzle experience requires a methodical mind and a sensible mindset. Furthermore, the old-school aesthetic and weird ambience are uncomfortable and eerie. However, this all-too-short game never outstays its welcome thanks to the bite-sized problems and helpful clues.

Developed by GoolWorks and Eastasiasoft Limited and published by the latter, this is a creepy puzzle experience. Moreover, there are point-and-click elements, and this surreal adventure is full of mindless characters and an odd sci-fi edge. Accordingly, it is immediately uncomfortable and will make your skin crawl.

The adventure beings with a man in a top hat.
Good day to you sir.

Under the Warehouse tells a strange tale.

I loved the randomness of 80s and 90s point-and-click games. Accordingly, Under the Warehouse piqued my interest. This unusual puzzle title blends classic point-and-click mechanics with a confusing and odd story. On top of this, the challenges are cryptic, and exploring the seedy warehouse is a daunting task.

You control an unnamed hero. This person answers a phone call and his adventure begins. A masked child requires your help in recovering a colourful egg. However, this isn’t an easy task as it’s lost inside a sprawling warehouse. Consequently, if you wish to succeed, you must solve many problems and try to get the workers to talk. Yet, they are a strange bunch that is as confused as you are.

Think outside of the box.

If you love cryptic crosswords and out-of-the-box thinking, then you’ll adore Under the Warehouse. The surreal plot and weird puzzles require you to have an abstract mindset. Furthermore, you require a fine eye for detail as clues are hidden and items are tough to find.

Alongside this, the warehouse is unbelievably odd! There are frozen doors, weird laboratories, and a boss that never talks. Furthermore, people hide in the shadows, and animals block your progress. Accordingly, you’ll frown as you attempt to piece together the madness.

Take the path and meet the frog.
What could that frog want?

Classic mechanics.

Though much of the action is very weird, Under the Warehouse relies on classic mechanics. As such, you’ll be required to combine items to create new objects or clean the ones you hold. Alternatively, you may need to feed a chicken, tease a dog, or melt a frozen lock. This sounds bizarre beyond belief, but if you speak to the workers and listen to the clues, it all makes perfect sense.

This is what is great about this genre. Mostly, the answers are right in front of your face. However, this can be frustrating as well. If you miss a clue, or you don’t understand what is required, you can become lost. As such, I wish this game had a better hint system. Unfortunately, you can aimlessly wander the warehouse if you lose your way. As a result, I can see many people giving up way before they get to the finale.

Under the Warehouse is grey and grim.

There are many ways to demonstrate an oppressive world. Under the Warehouse uses its plain colour palette and simple sprites to great effect. From the off, you know that something isn’t right. Impressively, this feeling gets worse as you explore a grey and grim world. What’s more, the expressionless workers are creepy and emotionless. As such, this adds to the uncomfortable nature of the story.

This strange title has a deliciously sombre soundtrack. What’s more, there is enough variety to keep things interesting. However, the sound effects weren’t that impressive. The footsteps were OTT and there were no background noises. Though this created a hollow and eerie atmosphere, it didn’t match the visuals. Consequently, it was a little jarring and ultimately it didn’t work.

A frozen door with a frozen lock.
Brrrr. How could you melt the lock?

It was pleasant enough to play.

The developers have done a good job with the controls. Once you work out the fundamentals, you’ll easily select and combine items. Yet, the navigation element was a bit cumbersome and the first-person perspective didn’t help the situation. Accordingly, you’d crash into walls, shelves, and other miscellaneous objects repeatedly. This was more comical than annoying, but it should have been much better.

If you are good at solving cryptic puzzles and you get to grips with the warehouse layout, you’ll fly through this game. Unfortunately, Under the Warehouse is painfully short. Furthermore, once you’ve completed it once, I can’t see a reason to return. As such, it sadly lacks replay value and longevity.

Under the Warehouse won’t wow you.

Under the Warehouse is a decent indie title that won’t wow you. Its gameplay, puzzles, and core concept are good, but nothing more. I liked the eerie atmosphere and the weird plot. However, nothing stands out, and this was disappointing. Furthermore, the lack of longevity or replay value was unfortunate. If you are a completionist, this is a great title. Yet, if you want a weird and interesting puzzle adventure game, there are better options out there. Despite these complaints, I enjoyed my short time with it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you find the colourful egg? Enter the warehouse, solve the puzzles, and get the hell out.
