Dell No Longer Selling Netbooks

0

Dell said yesterday that they are no longer selling netbooks – and I’m not in the least surprised.

dell_mini_10_2

In a statement sent to CNET:

“We sold through the Dell Mini some time ago. We’re committed to the highly portable space and have focused on delivering thin + powerful solutions, for which we’ve seen strong success, particularly in our XPS line,” Matthew Hutchison, director of Dell Global Consumer PR, said.

To be honest I can’t say that I am surprised. A couple of years ago Netbooks were all the rage. I even wrote a book about them! The problem was always the lack of processing power. They were ok for checking email and surfing the web, but if you wanted to do much more it was a problem. And now with tablets selling a lot of units and being able to do so much more, no one is really interested in netbooks anymore. Oh, and now you have the ultrabooks as well…….

iTunes Match Launches in the UK

3

Tonight Apple finally launched iTunes Match here in the UK.

match

iTunes Match stores your music library in iCloud so that you can access it from anywhere. It is a subscription based service that you have to pay £21.99 a year for.

Personally it’s not something I am interested in using as I have an iPhone and an iPod which has music on and I pretty much take them wherever I go and I don’t have to pay extra to do so.

Is iTunes Match something you are interested in? Let us know…..

Review of the Lenspen Original – The Industry Standard in Optical Cleaning

2

Lenspen Banner

As a keen photographer here at UWHS, I’m here to review the Lenspen Original Lens Cleaner.

Lenspen Packaging

I’m already an owner and big fan of the Lenspen DigiKlear, so I was expecting the same great quality from the Original, and was not disappointed. Lenspen make several pen-like products (as well as sensor-cleaning kits, air blowers and other tools), with the Original being primarily designed for the cleaning of the larger lens surfaces on DSLR cameras. The smaller lenses of compacts and camera phones are best cleaned with some of the other Lenspens like the MiniPro II and the MicroPro.

Here are Lenspen to explain the product themselves:

If you just watched that video, you’ll now know that the main features of all the Lenspens are their soft natural goathair brushes, flexible cleaning heads, and self-replenishing carbon-based cleaning pads. The carbon means no liquids to spill or dry out, meaning Lenspens last for a finite (but large) number of uses, but have no risk of drying out like liquid-based cleaners.

The Lenspen Original
Lenspen Brush
Lenspen Cleaning Head
Lenspen Removing Dust
Lenspen Removing Marks

The difference between the various pens is the size and shape of the cleaning head and brush. The Original has a large, round and concave head, ideally suited to cleaning large lens surfaces. As in the video, I tested the Original by putting a fingerprint on the front of my Canon 24mm f/1.4L lens. I normally use my DigiKlear for cleaning my lenses, and I found the larger head of the Original made the job easier. The flat DigiKlear needs a little more time as the area in contact with the lens is smaller. The DigiKlear, however is excellent for cleaning the ocular (eyepiece) due to its triangular cleaning head, which allows you to get into the corners. Different tools for different jobs! I’ve also just used the Original to spring-clean my glasses, which have come up sparkling! The Original will clean up all kinds of optical glass, including telescopes, binoculars and weapon scopes. This image shows the difference between the round Original head (right), and the triangular DigiKlear head (left):

Lenspen Heads

My rating for the Lenspen Original: 5/5 – No camera bag should be without one. Highly Recommended

Launching in early 2012, the PlexEasy device has been thoughtfully designed for home or office users who are less familiar with computers, but still need to back-up precious data such as digital photos or music.

The intuitive PlexEasy will integrate a compact 8x DVD writer alongside a built-in SD card reader and USB port which allows users to create direct backups from data that is stored on SD Cards or on digital devices such as tablets, smartphones, hard disks, flash drives, camcorders, and digital cameras –even without a PC connection.

When connecting the source device where the original files to back-up are stored, PlexEasy will even automatically present the logical destination medium to transfer files to. So, with just a simple touch invaluable memories can be stored safely or shared with friends and loved ones. Users can even check the status of their transfers using the integrated LCD screen.

Internet Explorer to Automatically Update from January

Microsoft have today announced that from January Internet Explorer updates will take place automatically.

ie-logo-small

Here is what Microsoft posted on their blog:

Everyone benefits from an up-to-date browser.

Today we are sharing our plan to automatically upgrade Windows customers to the latest version of Internet Explorer available for their PC. This is an important step in helping to move the Web forward. We will start in January for customers in Australia and Brazil who have turned on automatic updating via Windows Update. Similar to our release of IE9 earlier this year, we will take a measured approach, scaling up over time.

As always, when upgrading from one version of Internet Explorer to the next through Windows Update, the user’s home page, search provider, and default browser remains unchanged.

Good for Consumers, Developers and Enterprises

The Web overall is better – and safer – when more people run the most up-to-date browser. Our goal is to make sure that Windows customers have the most up-to-date and safest browsing experience possible, with the best protections against malicious software such as malware.

For consumers, the safety benefits are one of the key reasons that the industry has been moving towards automatic updates as the norm. This is increasingly important since the biggest online threat these days is socially engineered malware, which typically targets outdated software like Web browsers. The latest Microsoft Security Intelligence Report, which is based on data from over 600 million systems in over 100 countries, is good reading to give you a sense of risks that stem from outdated software.

We want to make updating to the best protection possible as fast and simple as we can for Windows customers. IE is how millions of Windows customers connect to the Web, so keeping that part of Windows updated at all times is critical to keeping them safe online. With automatic updates enabled through Windows Update, customers can receive IE9 and future versions of Internet Explorer seamlessly without any “update fatigue” issues.

Wider deployment of the most up-to-date browser benefits the Web in other ways as well. Developers and online businesses can rely on better browsers to deliver richer and more capable Web experiences. We built IE9 with a focus on modern web standards and interoperability so that developers could spend less time coding for specific browsers and spend more time building the next big thing on the Web. More of the Web running an HTML5 capable browser, vs. something built ten years ago, is a great thing for developers and the businesses they support.

Respecting Customer Choice and Control

While the benefits of upgrading are numerous, we recognize that some organizations and individuals may want to opt-out and set their own upgrade pace. One of the things we’re committed to as we move to auto updates is striking the right balance for consumers and enterprises – getting consumers the most up-to-date version of their browser while allowing enterprises to update their browsers on their schedule. The Internet Explorer 8 and Internet Explorer 9 Automatic Update Blocker toolkits prevent automatic upgrades of IE for Windows customers who do not want them. Of course, we firmly believe that IE9 is the most compelling browser for business customers, and we want them to make the decision to upgrade at their convenience.

Similarly, customers who have declined previous installations of IE8 or IE9 through Windows Update will not be automatically updated. Customers have the ability to uninstall updates and continue to receive support for the version of IE that came with their copy of Windows. And similar to organizations, consumers can block the update all together and upgrade on their own. Finally, future versions of IE will provide an option in the product for consumers to opt out of automatic upgrading.

We are excited to help make the Web better by upgrading Windows customers to the latest version of Internet Explorer.

Ryan Gavin
General Manager, Internet Explorer Business and Marketing

There seems to be mixed reaction to the news, with some people thinking it’s a great idea (me included) and others not happy about it.

What do you think?
