Silent Hunter Online 2nd developer diary video released

SilentHunterOnline_S_1_GamesCom

Silent Hunter Online is a free-to-play strategy simulation game from Ubisoft in which you command your own flotilla of submarines.

Silent Hunter Online sees the return of the lovingly and painstakingly recreated array of historically accurate submarines that brought fame to the franchise, and invites players to command them online in new ways. At the heart of the game is “the Battle of the Atlantic”, an innovative and dynamic campaign in which individual successes impact all other players through asynchronous gameplay. For the first time in the Silent Hunter series, players will be able to play every mission in real-time and in co-op, by teaming up online to form a Wolfpack and operating as a single unit towards joint goals and server-wide missions.

Here is the 2nd developer diary to watch:

What do you think? Are you going to play it? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Review: DmC – Devil May Cry

A silver haired man from Capcom hacked, slashed and brooded his way on to our consoles in 2001 and this year he made a return, after a bit of a makeover. Dante has changed the way he looks, but how does the rest of DmC stand up against the Devil May Cry series?

dmc3

One of the most notable things about the Devil May Cry series is the array of weapons at Dante’s disposal and these could be confusing at first. Thankfully DmC slowly introduces these one at time and shows you how to use them and not in a way that screams tutorial in your face. Each time you acquire a new weapon you are taken to a different plane in which to you need to use it to traverse obstacles or fight new enemies. This technique works well, teaching without condescending and slowly combining the various weapons and creating a learning curve.

There was a worry at first that Ninja Theory, a small and fairly young company from Cambridge, wouldn’t be able to create a game that could handle such complex weapons and fight systems, however DmC is doing just fine. With a helping hand from Capcom the game plays as any other before it and the fights are still varied and complex. As you progress the enemies get harder but the ones you already know don’t just lie down at the flash of a sword. The mix of moves, customisation and varying ways to kill enemies really adds to the re-playability of DmC, as well as the famous scoring system which still gives a small thrill when the big S’ flash up on screen.

dmc2

Cut scenes flow effortlessly into gameplay and are plentyful enough to carry the story forward, but not so numerous that the game turns into a film you get to interactive with every so often. The story here certainly has a greater role in the game than the original and although the base story is there, it’s very much like an adaptation. Think along the lines of Shakespeare performed via the media of dance. DmC has a more modern and Western storyline too with the evil demons also being the heads of multinational companies in a conspiracy David Icke would be proud of. However, it works. The story is certainly not on the scale of Ninja Theory’s Enslaved: Odyssey to the West but it is more integral to the game than its previous incarnation’s.

After enjoying the original games it was easy to have reservations about a reboot, many series overhauls have been critically slated. DmC however is different; this works. The bones of the game are still very similar but the flesh creates a whole new animal. This Dante is different though, this time he’s louder with much more of an attitude and some points in the game you aren’t quite sure whether to high-five him or punch him. King of the one-liners and puns he can get a little annoying at times, especially if you get stuck on a section and have to listen to the same corny lines over and over.

dmc1

The negatives of this game are certainly the minor points though and as a whole Ninja Theory have done a really good job on DmC. If you were a fan of the original games, or simply a newcomer, DmC is a definitely one to pick up. Unless you’re offended by changing hair colour, of course.

DmC: Devil May Cry is available now for XBOX 360, PS3 and PC.

The much-delayed Skyrim expansions will be available at  half price during their respective launch weeks.

The release of  ‘Dragonborn’, meanwhile, will be preceded by the 1.8 update, which makes memory  and stability improvements, as well as fixing certain bugs.

Bethesda confirmed PS3 DLC support late last year, after previously admitting that it was  unsure if the expansions would ever launch on a Sony device.

The recently-launched ‘Dragonborn’ DLC is currently available on Xbox 360 for 1600 Microsoft Points  (£15/$20).

The expansion sees players travel to Solstheim, an island  known for its snowy climate and mines, which is located east of  Skyrim.

EE to stream the EE BAFTAs 360° Red Carpet Show live for you to control

Laura Whitmore, today announced as the presenter of the ‘EE BAFTAs 360° Red Carpet Show’ at the EE British Academy Film Awards ceremony, is pictured in the plush surroundings of The Savoy Hotel's Beaufort Bar as she prepares for her role. Laura is wearing a dress by Halston Heritage, shoes by Jimmy Choo and jewellery from Asprey

EE, the title sponsor of the EE British Academy Film Awards and the provider of Britain’s first superfast 4G network, today announced that it will be streaming the ‘EE BAFTAs 360° Red Carpet Show’ live from the ceremony using multi-camera, cutting edge, 360° technology. Film lovers watching the show will be offered the chance to virtually mingle with the stars on the BAFTA Film Awards red carpet in a way they have never been able to before.

Viewers will be able to toggle between each camera in real time, controlling the action by panning up down, left and right in full 360°, putting them in the director’s chair for what is one the film world’s most star studded evenings. A highlights edit of the show will be released on Monday 11 February.

Within the EE Film app for iOs and Android, the 360° video player will use the device’s inbuilt gyroscopic controls to let viewers literally turn themselves and their device to look to their left, right and even behind themselves, as if they are on the red carpet in person.

On facebook.com/EE viewers will be able to experience the stream in full 360°, switch between the four camera streams, as well as interacting and discussing the show in real time.

The ‘EE BAFTA 360° Red Carpet Show’ follows on from the star turn made in 2012 by self-proclaimed “international star, role model and diva,” Miss Piggy who anchored an online show for sister brand Orange, interviewing the likes of Daniel Radcliffe, Michael Fassbender, Jessica Chastain, Gary Oldman and Octavia Spencer amongst many more, before EE took over title sponsorship for the 2013 ceremony.

Presenter Laura Whitmore will be anchoring the show from Camera One, directly outside the Royal Opera House, where she will be interviewing leading stars of the film world, including nominated actors, actresses and directors from the year’s biggest blockbusters including Life of Pi, Lincoln, Argo, Django Unchained, Skyfall and Les Misérables.

Three to offer Ultrafast services as standard with no price premium

1

Three UK today made a public commitment to offer Ultrafast services as a standard feature on all its smartphone price plans.

3-three-logo-580-75

LTE, otherwise known as 4G, will be added to Three’s Ultrafast network later this year. Unlike some other UK mobile operators, it will be available across all existing and new price plans without customers needing to pay a premium fee to ‘upgrade’.

Three’s Ultrafast network, currently supported by DC-HSDPA technology, already covers 55% of the UK population with an initial focus on 50 towns and cities. It will reach 80% population coverage by the end of March and in the second half of this year it will incorporate 1800Mhz spectrum already acquired by Three to add even more coverage and capacity.

Any customer with an Ultrafast ready device can already enjoy great speeds on Three’s Ultrafast network without paying a premium or needing to swap SIM cards or price plans. LTE will be available as standard with all customers’ price plans when the roll-out begins later this year.

Customers with Ultrafast ready devices, including the Apple iPhone 5, Nokia Lumia 920, Sony Xperia Z, Apple iPad mini and Apple iPad with Retina display, can already enjoy Three’s Ultrafast network and will also be able to use the 1800Mhz spectrum when it is added later this year. Device choice is growing rapidly with new Ultrafast ready LTE versions of the Samsung Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II being launched on Three within the next month, and the BlackBerry Z10 launching mid-February.

The prequel to the best-selling God of War franchise, God of War: Ascension explores the more human side of Kratos as he struggles with the pain of losing everything he has ever loved.

Sony Computer Entertainment has collaborated with Imaginary Forces, the creative minds behind some of the epic cut-scenes that gamers will see in God of War: Ascension, and the game’s developer Santa Monica Studio, to bring Kratos and his family to life, paying careful attention to remain true to the game itself.

Hands-on with The Dark Knight Rises FX HD app for iOS

1

With the recent release of The Dark Knight Rises on Blu-ray, there is also an app you can download that unlocks exclusive content from the disc – we take a look at it.

CDW The Dark Knight Rises FX HD - 1

This is how the app is described:

Become one of Gotham’s Most Wanted, put yourself in the Camo Tumbler and add the Tumbler to your own personal video! Share with friends via Facebook, Twitter, etc.

CDW The Dark Knight Rises FX HD - 2

Put the Camo Tumbler in your video
– Shoot your own video and have the Camo Tumbler to drive through it. Share your video with friends!

Photo Opps
– Put yourself in the Camo Tumbler in a photo
– Place yourself in The Dark Knight Rises “RISE” poster

Gotham City’s Most Wanted
– Place the mask from Batman, Bane or Catwoman mask onto your photo and share with friends

And more!

You can use the app without syncing it to your Blu-ray disc, but you won’t get the exclusive content, but if you don’t have a Blu-ray player that is connected to your network then you should still try the app.

CDW The Dark Knight Rises FX HD - 10

Syncing is very simple – just select the Second Screen menu option and wait.

CDW The Dark Knight Rises FX HD - 5

Once you are in the app you have a number of different options to choose from, including looking at the characters and locations in the film, a number of featurettes you can watch, and even a scene explorer – the choice is yours.

CDW The Dark Knight Rises FX HD - 11

You can select any of the main characters to learn more about them and see exclusive behind the scenes content – personally I like Selina, I wonder why?

CDW The Dark Knight Rises FX HD - 3 CDW The Dark Knight Rises FX HD - 4

The featurettes are really interesting too.

CDW The Dark Knight Rises FX HD - 7

One of the really cool features is the ability to either sync the app to the movies or sync the movie to the app. What this does is enable you to jump straight to a scene in the film if you are looking at it on the app, or look at it in the app if you are watching it in the film, all at the press of a button. The film automatically pauses and continues so that you don’t miss anything.

CDW The Dark Knight Rises FX HD - 6

You can examine lots of the vehicles and gadgets from the film too.

CDW The Dark Knight Rises FX HD - 8

And learn a lot about the behind-the-scenes activities.

CDW The Dark Knight Rises FX HD - 9

And you can even make a video that includes a Camo Tumbler from the film.

CDW The Dark Knight Rises FX HD - 12

This is quite fun, so you should give it a try – here the tumbler is about to drive over my carpet.

CDW The Dark Knight Rises FX HD - 13

You can also use the camera on your iPad or iPhone to take a picture of yourself wearing one of the masks if you fancy yourself the next Batman or Catwoman.

Overall I was very impressed with the app, especially because it was free. Yes, once you have gone through all the videos, taken some pictures and made a video with the tumbler you have pretty much done everything, but there is a lot to do with around 130 syncable events to got though. I can easily see a lot more movies coming with Second Screen abilities in the future, and I look forward to them.

Just make sure you have actually watched the film first before playing with the app – you don’t wait any spoilers now do you?

Download the app from the Apple App Store for free
